Last night, my friends and I threw a huge birthday bash for our friend's 21st birthday. It started off with extensive drinking and continued with a 250 pound man breaking the basketball hoop on an alley-oop. Throughout the night, people mockingly acted as if he were Demarcus Cousins. When asked where he wanted to be drafted, he said he "wants to be a Sacramento King with his boy Tyreke Evans." While I was very drunk, it led to my theory as to why Demarcus Cousins will be a Sacramento King next season. The following theory consists of two aspects: a) Why Demarcus Cousins will be available at the 5th overall pick and b) Why Geoff Petrie will select Cousins with the 5th overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft.
a) Demarcus Cousins will be available at the 5th overall pick, because it seems as if Cousins has been trying to diminish his draft stock so he will be available at the number 5 pick. Let's step inside the head of Cousins for a second: What team has the most to offer for his young career? What about Igoudala's 76ers? Or maybe fellow big man Brook Lopez's Nets? How about Kevin Love and Big Al's T-Wolves? The answer would lie with Tyreke Evan's Sacramento Kings. The Kings would be the best fit for him and his career. Why else would he not try to downplay his attitude during interviews? Why would he show up to the combine with such a high body fat percentage? Why would he refuse to lift weights unless he wanted to fall to his team of choice?
b) Every year, it seems Geoff Petrie rewards his players by drafting or signing family members, friends, or former teammates. In 2005, Geoff Petrie signed Mike Bibby's Brother-in-law, Eddie House. In 2007, Geoff Petrie awarded Ron Artest's brother, Daniel Artest, with a spot on the summer league and practice roster. With the 38th pick in the 2009 NBA draft, Geoff Petrie selected Jon Brockman, Spencer Hawes' former teammate and friend, who was projected to go undrafted. Before the draft lottery, Tyreke Evans claimed that he wanted the Kings to select Demarcus Cousins. Tyreke Evans is the face of this franchise, and the Maloofs and Petrie will do whatever it takes to keep our Rookie of the Year happy. This may seem outlandish, but it made sense last night and I thought I would share it with you guys to see what you think.
