Playing Devil's advocate

What if in reality they have their mind made up about Cousins and aren’t working him out so Sacramento with think he’ll drop to 5? Thus, from Sac’s p.o.v. no need to trade up if Cousins is their number 2 guy and Favors seems too expensive to make a play for.

by sac_faithful on Jun 13, 2010 3:29 PM PDT up reply actions

You really think they are that worried about us trading with the 76ers?

So worried that they somehow got to one of Givony’s sources and made him convince Givony they were drafting Johnson just in case the Kings were thinking about trading up to get Cousins so that they will then think they will definitely get Cousins at 5 so then the Wolves can draft Cousins at 4 because no way could Phili or the Nets trade with another team who wants Cousins?

Besides if the Kings trade up with Phili it would likely be for Favors and the Wolves could still have a good chance at getting Cousins. This is a very complicated and unnecessary Bond villian type move that gives Kahn (and all other human beings) way too much credit. Nobody is that evil smart to pull off something like that and know how it would play out. Way too many variables.

As I've said before

It’s far greater a possibility that Cousins drops to 5. If that’s the guy the Kings really really want SD, they can pick him at 5. It’s really that simple.

If the Kings want Favors, they’re going to likely to have trade up to 2 to get him.

Because they would have to give up some serious salary cap room if they trade with Phili

and I highly doubt they would for someone who they can’t quite trust. Don’t get me wrong, if he’s available at 5 that’s great but no way they are taking on extra salary for him. I would be absolutely stunned if they did that. I can’t even think of the equivalent (and no, passing on Rubio isn’t even close to the same)

Sounds idiotic to me.

Why would they take a chance of the Kings wanting Johnson and pass on the trade. For $200K per year?

Trading down to someone else makes some sense, but it would have to be a deal to move someone or to pick up other talent. But, it’s unlikely Johnson lasts past #6. And, they don’t need any more draft picks this year, they probably won’t be able to sign or play most of them already.

Fans always want to see their team maximize the leverage they have to enhance their overall talent/assets. The problem is, I have a hard time seeing anyone outside of Detroit willing to move up at an acceptable pricetag, and even then I don’t know if they do it.

by Smills9133 on Jun 13, 2010 6:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Doesn't surprise me

Kahn is scared of DMC. It is all about job security. And the safe pick. He is fearful to mess up another draft or he gets fired.

I made this comment a few weeks ago:

The more Wes Johnson impresses, the more likely he goes ahead of DMC. If I am David Kahn, and have already taken heat for last years draft, I know I cannot afford to efff up a second draft in a row, or my days are numbered. He is already being second-guessed for drafting two PGs ahead of Jennings and Curry, one underachieved (Flynn), and one who doesn’t want to play in Minnesota (Rubio).

Minnesota can go one of two ways if they do not trade up, and pick Evan Turner. The safe pick is Wes Johnson. Kahn will likely get immediate payoff on the court, and buys his rebuild, which he naively terms a 3 year plan to contender status, more time. Do not underestimate self-preservation and the desire to retain his job.

The risky pick is DMC, which has a higher potential reward, but could backfire and blow up in Kahn’s face. If he picks Wes Johnson, he will be easy to sell to the fan base, and he collects a paycheck for another day. If he picks DMC, he will have to sweat it out, and likely balance his roster with a trade of Love or AJ.

If I had to guess, I would say Kahn swaps picks with 76ers or Nets, sacrifices the #16 or #25 pick to do so (no way they take Brand), and picks Evan Turner. If a deal cannot be had, he will play it safe and take Wes Johnson.

Barring trades, I think there is 50-50 chance or better that DMC goes #2 to Philly. If I am the 76ers, I would take Cousins over Favors. But I think either choice is a good one. I think they will pass on Evan Turner.

Top 5 Best Guess:
(1) Wizards – Wall
(2) 76ers – DMC
(3) Nets – Turner
(4) Minny – Johnson
(5) Kings – Favors

Also, Kahn is not capable of smoke screening. He is not that smart.

I believe that could happen

and you make a good point about Kahn not wanting to take any more chances. If Cousins fails he still might survive but if Rubio comes over the following year and busts, Kahn would be out of basketball permanently.

The 76ers are the key to the draft. If they take Cousins it will go down exactly like you said. If on the other hand they take Turner. Then it’s much harder to predict.

Nets will be trying to fill the PF spot with one of the Max FA’s, so it looks like they might pass on Cousins & Favors. And, while the question of whether or not Cousins or Favors falls to #5 is interesting, whether or not GP picks them will be more interesting.

I'm a horrible person

But when I hear Evan Turner speak, he sounds to me like he’s partially deaf.

I did a Google search for “evan turner sounds like” and these were the main three results:

1. Kermit the Frog
2. Meatwad
3. An alien

Looks like I’m not the only horrible person on Earth.

I think Cousins is the safe pick for Minnesota

Everyone has him pegged as the #4 player in a four player draft. Taking Johnson means going against the conventional wisdom like he did last year and opening up an entire can of worms of criticism.

If I’m Kahn and I’m worried about my image as a GM I take Cousins. If I’m Kahn and I act as I normally do, then I select Wes Johnson. Which is what I inevitably think Kahn will do.

I one of the biggest proponents of adding Greg Monroe to our roster...

…with that said, even I wouldn’t pass on Cousins in favor of Monroe. Although, I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibilities for Petrie. But at the end of the day, I fully expect Geoff to pick DMC at #5.

Yahoo! confirms Draft Express Tweet
John Grieg, the agent for Cousins, won’t send his client to workout for the Minnesota Timberwolves, sources say, because he believes the Wolves have decided to draft Syracuse small forward Wesley Johnson.

And on yesterday’s workout:

Cousins had an excellent workout with the Sacramento Kings, grading out as the best shooter to visit Sacramento in the predraft process. He hit 78 percent of his shots in the workout, including a lot of pick-and-pop attempts.

Favors graded out as the far better athlete, but the Kings, who have the No. 5 pick in the draft, believed Cousins was a more advanced player. He showed Sacramento officials more range than they thought he had, consistently hitting the 17-foot jumper. The Kings are considering several players, but Cousins could be difficult to pass over.

What a dumb organization.

Remember when the Clippers had selected Blake Griffin even before the lottery and didn’t work out anyone else?

Not saying he won’t become a great player, but that’s no way to maximize the value of your draft pick.

the sound of truth rings clear

though in his defense, Griffin was the best pick to make, no reason to pretend.

There's really no reason for Minnesota to pick a big

With Jefferson and Love already in the fold. That’s not their problem. Johnson would be a nice fit.

Re: Petrie, he needs a beast down low, not another power forward who can hit 17-foot jumpers. I think his draft board looks like this:

1. Favors
2. Johnson
3. Xavier Henry

He may be able to trade down to get Henry while netting another late lottery pick.

"I know we certainly gave up a lot to get him, but we do have other players on the perimeter who we can plug in. We haven’t had anybody who we feel is a go-to guy in the post. So we gave up a lot to get a lot, and we’re real excited about adding Carl." - Paul Westphal

wouldn't this criteria put cousins on the list
Re: Petrie, he needs a beast down low, not another power forward who can hit 17-foot jumpers.

Johnson is not a beast down low. Henry is not a beast down low.

Umm... I thought we were officially referring to Voison as the Chick Replacing Amick at the Paper? or CRAP, for short.

Favors is the beast

If he can’t get Favors, Petrie will take the best 1, 2 or 3 available. Petrie probably feels the other bigs wouldn’t be an upgrade on the guys he already has, so he will go the best player available route.

he might go Johnson

But if he is committed to getting a “beast” I think he goes Whiteside. He can develop behind our current roster and still probably take away Hawes’ minutes this season. Whiteside and JT on the block would be sick. In fact I think any defensive minded big allows any one of our other bigs to focus on their strengths, respectively. Landry would definitely benefit, and I would expect a return to Houston type numbers, not that he is that far off from them anyway—could just be due to changing teams, different talent, etc.

ummm...

Cousins is a beast down low. He weighs 290 and has a developed back to the basket game. He’s also a good rebounder
