[T]he Kings have been talking to several teams about moving down in the draft. The Kings are looking for veterans and have been shopping Andres Nocioni and Francisco Garcia to see if they can get any takers.

My thoughts

We’ve talked about how Geoff Petrie doesn’t tend to trade down. If the player he wants is there, he takes him. But what if there’s a free agent he covets more? Most of the scenarios we’ve explored have centered around trading down to accumulate picks. This would be entirely different.

Whose to say that Cousins value was helped by the workout?

I mean, Tyreke Evans was said to do poorly in the 3 player workout he did with Flynn & Curry, and as it turned out he had the most value out of that workout.

What gets said today is not necessarily what means squat tomorrow.

true about Tyreke but technically just the fact that people think it was a plus for Cousins

would in fact enhance his value at the moment regardless of the truth. I don’t see this whole trading down like a smokescreen. IMO it sounds more like they pumped up his value but in fact don’t really want him but are happy to trade down to get rid of contracts and get the other guy they really wanted.

I wasn't excited about last year's draft either

But looking back, we might have one of the best 1-and-2 guard draft classes, ever. Okay, I haven’t done the research, and the jury’s still out on last year’s players, but c’mon… Harden, Flynn, Collison, Curry, DeRozan, Jennings, Holiday, Beaubois, Matthews, and Mr. “20-5-5” Tyreke Evans (have you checked his ID?).

Admittedly, it IS hard to get excited with all of this year’s prospects, but there’s bound to be at least a handful of good ones. College-level name recognition doesn’t matter much 5 years into a professional career.

On the trade, some people will look at Hedo's salary and balk.

He’s owed $42M over 4 yrs if he doesn’t opt out of the ETO in the 4th season. But, we’re dumping $30M and getting DeRosen who could be a very good backcourt mate to Evans, assuming one of them learns how to hit the 3 pter.

Again I wouldn’t do it unless Cousins & Favors were gone and Whiteside was going to be a good center in GP’s eyes. I’m just not sold on Monroe or any of the other bigs. Whiteside has size, length, athleticism, but he’s still a project. And, a couple of years away from Starting.

So wait

You don’t want to trade for Prince, who is expiring in ’11, but you do want to trade for Hedo?

HT you confuse me.

by nbrans on Jun 14, 2010 5:01 PM PDT up reply actions

We both agree we wouldn't do either of these trades if Cousins or Favors is available at 5, Right?

I don’t like the Prince trade as much because I didn’t like the idea of trading down just to dump Cisco especially if Noc agrees to a buy out. And the money we save if Noc does agree to a buy out, is the last 2 years of Cisco’s contract. But, even that isn’t that much if we have to go out and trade or sign someone for the SG spot this season.

If your not looking for cap space and you think Hedo can help the team with his game and experience, he’s only going to cost $12M over 4 years more than Noc & Cisco and you get DeRosen and Toronto’s pick. That’s 3 players that can help right away, versus Prince and #7.

If I were Petrie I wouldn't do the deal if Cousins were at 5

Favors I’m not so sold on. But then again, I’m not Petrie. Also I just gave Pookey an aneurysm.

I also don’t think much of DeRozen and don’t see how he’d really be a very good fit with Tyreke at all – another guy who can’t shoot from outside. That isn’t much of a sweetener in my opinion.

So basically I look at this as: would you rather have Prince and the #7 or Hedo and the #13?

And that’s such a no brainer to me it’s like a negative brainer. Prince is the better player at this point, he’s younger, and he an infinitely better contract. Hedo could kill your cap for years.

by nbrans on Jun 14, 2010 5:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Neither is a perfect deal.

If Hedo starts for the next 4 years, we can move Donte or Omri for another piece of the puzzle. DeRosen is still young, and he has the size to force other teams to play their PG on Evans. I don’t know who’s available a #7 that’s that better than who will be around at #13, at least as far a Bigs go. 2nd tier bigs are still a crap shoot.

One thought, if Favor and Cousins are gone at 5, and we trade down to #7 wouldn’t Detroit be likely to take Monroe? And, if they did who would be worth taking at #7 to help in our frontcourt?

DeRozan

if you’re going to trade, you want a guy like DeRozan back who has real upside -

might not be the shooter (yet) that Wes Johnson is, but he was widely viewed to be the best athlete in last year’s draft, and will likely improve lots in Yr 2, 3 … and the 2 is his natural position

Turkoglu is NOT the answer that Prince would be at the 3 because he can’t defend and he handles the ball too much, at too high a cost …

I really like the possibility of a Reke/Cisco backcourt. It’s too bad we couldn’t really see it in action last season. If there’s a good deal for Cisco, we can go ahead and ship him out, but I don’t see him as bad as albatross as Noce.

Agree

I think he’ll take DMC if he is there at 5. If not, the trade down makes sense for everything you mention. A “project big” could be there later (Whiteside?) or more likely a suitable partner for Reke in the back court if DeRozan is not part of the equation in the trade down.

by bozotunes on Jun 14, 2010 2:24 PM PDT up reply actions

And, how many times has GP not traded down from the top 5?

I don’t think past history will play any part in GP decision. But, I will say that if Cousins and Favor are gone by #5, and GP isn’t sold on Monroe, then I wouldn’t be surprised if he trades the pick for a vet or trades down to get multiple pieces.

True

And this is an offseason quite unlike any others, due to the huge power plays going on with the big free agents and having so many teams chasing them – plus the looming CBA. A team like the Kings (who have a significant amount of space) should be getting a lot of attention from teams trying to move up or down in the draft.

Tayshaun Prince was part of one rumor

It had Nocioni and #5 going to Detroit and the Kings getting Prince and #7. If they trade down they obviously aren’t in love with Cousins.

by Mark Olberding on Jun 14, 2010 2:24 PM PDT reply actions

This deal would make sense if they want to go with Monroe but Golden State’s draft situation is still too shaky. Who knows they may end up picking Monroe with the sixth pick.

by nick1153 on Jun 14, 2010 2:34 PM PDT up reply actions

I guess an actual trade down signifies Petrie has no interest in Cousins. This trade down has been the rumor for the last 24 hours. Reynolds did allude to the Kings liking a player on no one’s radar during that radio interview.

by bignerd on Jun 14, 2010 2:24 PM PDT reply actions

Babbit and Hayward are coming to town

to workout the day before the draft. It wouldn’t be out of the question for Petrie to fall in love with a special shooter like Babbit or a player like Hayward. Those 2 working out shows he may trade down or surprise us at #5 with a player not on the radar.

So, this would seem to suggest that Petrie is not looking to move up.

If he is interested in Cousins and/or Favors, he is willing to take his chances that one of them will be there at the five. If neither is there, then he moves onto plan B to trade the 5 spot and make his pick later.

again, there is no reason to move up

Cousins or Favors could be there at 5, and Turner & Johnson aren’t that great a fit …. and if GP isn’t sold on Favors/Cousins, that’s why you move down

by Watty4ever on Jun 15, 2010 9:26 AM PDT up reply actions

Cousins is the only player at the 5th pick I would be excited about

So if he(& Favors) is gone I wouldn’t mind trading down & picking Whiteside or Monroe.

Here is my problem. We have a ton of cap space already is getting rid of Garcia really necessary? Is he really killing our cap? GP gave him his current contract probably figuring he would be a fringe starter or 6th man. Maybe he averages about 12-14 pts per game & plays solid D. Isn’t that what he does?

Another problem I have is there isn’t one available veteran player that I know of on the trade block I would be excited about more than Cousins. Hedo would be a disaster. Okafor, Chandler, Iguodala, Mo Williams? No thanks. So what veteran who is available is really worth the # 5 pick? Are we trying to pull a Boston move & trade our young talent for vets? Only problem is are there really any players available as good as KG & Ray Allen were? Maybe GP makes a strong push for Amare?

I love beating dead horses.

… I said Lee duplicates what we already have with Landry, it doesn’t mean I think Landry is not good. And, yes, I watched all 28 games Landry played for the Kings.

That said, I think “beast” is a bit of a stretch.

About dumping contracts, the more money the Kings can save the better the franchise is going to be. The team is still struggling to sell the arena, the owners took a big hit with the economy dip and neither Noc & Garcia are apart of the long term plans. A penny saved today is another penny they have to invest in the future when prospects are looking brighter.

It's 75% of the salary cap

It was $43 million this last year.

According to Sham, we’re sitting at $33 for this summer, before signing our picks. Those should only add up to be about $5 million combined, so we’re going to have to spend on something this summer.

by LPKingsFan on Jun 14, 2010 3:46 PM PDT up reply actions

I wouldn't be so worried about this.

The 5th pick + the 33rd pick and whatever else the Kings do will get them over the line.

It’s a fun scenario to imagine, but I agree, there’s not a KG-esque guy out there. And Prince and Hedo are not Ray Allen. It’s been said that the Maloofs are buds with Amare, but does Amare like them enough to come here over re-upping with Phoenix or heading to NYC or Miami?

Moving Down...

I think the #5 + Noc+ Hawes for Prince + #7 works cap-wise. This all but guarantees Cousins is off the board, and firmly plants Prince as the starting small forward for the upcoming season (his last under contract). If the Kings covet a guy who can be picked at the #7 spot, this move saves them long-term money and gives them a quality starter at the small forward position. This likely also allows them to move Donte or Omri in another deal. I don’t LOVE this deal, but I find it more palatable than the proposed Toronto deal IF Petrie loves a guy that will slip to #7. I’d still prefer they roll with dice with Cousins.

by IamPurple on Jun 14, 2010 2:42 PM PDT reply actions

Why not just due Donte or Omri in that deal then instead of Hawes? That way you have a trade piece in Hawes rather then tryign to trade out donte or Omri.

Why it’s easy to believe is Chad doesn’t have talk to the Kings to confirm. The Kings could just be floating the idea out there and a contacted GM could have spilled the beans to Chad Ford.

And from what I've heard.....

…it seems that the Kings would probably be more interested in Favors than Cousins. I’m not really sure what a big skilled offensive big man does for the Kings other than make them better offensively. I think Favors brings something defensively the Kings have never had in the Sacramento era and the Kings brass is very aware of that.

Like I’ve said, the question is whether the Kings can trade up and are willing to do so. I’m hoping they do, but holding my breath on such. I don’t expect anything to happen until June 24th, and Philly may want DMC but not want to pick him 2nd. If they can shed Brand and pick up an extra 1st, I’m sure they will consider trading the rights to Favors if they aren’t wowed by Turner or Johnson.

No, you could very well be correct

I remember the weeks leading up to the draft last season – there was so much confusion about the Kings intentions. For a while there, it appeared Jrue Holliday was going to be the pick. But grabbing him at #4 seemed asinine, so you start thinking about trading down, etc. Then it was Flynn, then maybe Evans, all the while Rubio was a no-brainer if he fell in the draft.

I think this season, with all the other variables (cap space, CBA coming up, the LeBron/Wade/Bosh sweepstakes), there are even more wrinkles to the potential outcome here. So your guess is as good as anyone else’s.

Is that Petrie is in the catbird seat IMO. He has the #5 pick, he’s got an abundance of cap room, and he’s extremely patient by nature.

We get closer to draft time, and he should have some leverage over the teams who are desperate to either move up/down in the draft or clear cap space.

What about something like this?

You guys get a good shooting guard that would probably be a great fit for Tyreke, and the 7th pick, and the Pistons get a vet, a young guy, and the 5th pick. I guess they would draft Cousins, and then you guys could get Whiteside, Monroe, or somebody else.

Why would the Kings let Dumars off the hook for one of the worst signings in resent history?

Not to be mean but when Ben Gordon left the 55 million dollar extension offer on the table from Chicago, he screwed himself. No one, including the Bulls, was ready to come within 15 million of the offer Dumars threw up there. Gordon is a nice player at 6 mill a year but he is an undersized 2 who signed a 5yr/58 million dollar contract. That my friend is what you call an albatross.

I have always liked Dumars but he lost his mind last season and set your franchise back half a decade.

I don’t buy that he costs the Kings 2 spots int he draft though. For the Kings to take Hedo, it would be more of a breaking up of a contract like Noc and Garcia for him which isn’t horrible when you consider that it would also cost the 13th pick as well for Toronto.

THe great thing about Petrie is...

…if you’ve heard the rumor, there’s a 90% chance it’s already dead and won’t happen. The only deal I can remember being ‘leaked’ and actually occurring was the Peja for Artest deal. Bibby pretty much happened. Martin just happened. Miller/Salmons just happened. These trades weren’t out there when they happened. Typically when there is a rumor surrounding the Kings it’s smokescreen and/or already dead.

No

Some of us saw the Brad Miller signing months in advance. The drafting of Reke was predicted in the Bee, and I think DX and even Ford’s last mocks before the draft. And I’m pretty sure both the Martin and Miller/Salmons trades were at least leaked early before they were announced, even if it was the same day.

Excellent is a bit far

but if he can stay healthy I think he can be more than capable. He can hit the long ball, can hit the clutch shot, run the point for stretches, and plays with the most passion on the team. His production when Speed was out a couple years ago leads me to believe his skills and spark off the bench definitely have a place on this team, especially when compared to the relative cost.

At this point

You’d like to see him stay healthy both to see what he could do and to get your money’s worth. But I’m not sure how that factors into the club’s overall approach. I think they have to be cautious and not expect a lot, and that might cause them to deal him rather than hope for good things.

Haha those are ridiculous

The Bucks and Hornets get totally ripped off. The Bucks would never trade the 15th pick for Nocioni (a decent role player at best) and a 2nd rounder, and the Hornets would never trade a potential all star point guard and the 11th pick for Hawes (a soft big man), Garcia (can’t stay on the court), and the 15th pick. These are total homer trade ideas.

It's unlikely MIL takes on Noc and his $13M contract and moves down into the 2nd round.

Mil isn't over the salary cap even if Redd and Salmons don't opt out

And, Redd is an expiring contract, and more valuable than Noc at the trade deadline. No there is no one on the Bucks that they need to move for Noc that’s worth moving down in the draft.

Won't happen...

Trade #1 – Buck’s will not drop to #33 to get Noc’s contract and give up the #15 and Gad…Could happen but Buck’s lose on this trade.

Trade #2 – I’d do it because we’d take Collison anyday of the week for Noc’s contract but Peja will make too much and the Kings will not want to bring Peja back (too old).

i say

trade Garcia to NO so that we can buyout Noc. and i would prefer taking Peja over Okafor since his contract will expire 2011

by jumpboi on Jun 14, 2010 7:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Your just going to keep throwing this shit up until something sticks aren't you?

NOH are in deep salary trouble, and they would gladly look for help. So while, Cisco is owed more than Peja, NOH might be willing to do the trade because it saves them dollars this year. But, the Kings don’t need Peja, and have no reason to take on his contract and eat into their cap space this year. And, yes the Kings would save $3M off of Cisco’s contract but Cisco at $17M over 3 years is better than Peja at $14M over one year.

As for Okafor, he’s one of the top centers in the league and well worth his contract. If the Kings can’t get a center in the draft, Okafor would be a good 2nd option and well worth the money. more so than Peja and his contract.

Maybe you should read the post of the more experience posters on this site before you continue on your current course. There are a lot of things involve in good trades and you have much to learn, grasshopper. Read other trades, read the responses and ask questions, it’s the best way to learn.

what we should do is sign chandler and draft johnson and warren/terrrico

are linup would be set.
i can see it now tyreke jukes, drives into the lane kicks it out to johnson
and he hits it, over and over again.
and try to mold warren/terrico into our OTHER como guard of the future

Chris Paul isn’t playing in Sac so I don’t want Chandler here, CP3 made Chandler who he was but now playing with the Cats, he isn’t much but nothing.

I actually think there might be a kernel of truth in this.

Not that GP is actually interested to trade down, but as a GM, wouldn’t you put it out there that you might be interested just to see what bites? It’s a fishing expedition.

Bold Prediction: Whoever we pick 5th this year will have a better NBA season than whoever was picked 5th last year.

by elfboy_ on Jun 14, 2010 7:38 PM PDT reply actions

Could be

Given the fact we whored out all the info about how good Cousins was in the tryout and now all of a sudden seeing if anyone is interested in the 5th pick.

Or it could just be “Eh let’s see what’s out there.”

I just don’t get the whole “smokescreen” thing. I don’t think anyone is that much of an evil genius, somehow increasing a player’s value but finding someway to make sure nobody takes him at the same time.

Man, I'm confused

Smokescreen, conspiracies, Osama Bin Laden, the World Cup, Scarlett Joahnsson is hot!, we’re absolutely going insane. Best time of the year

And to add even more fuel to the fire. Jerry was on with Douchebag and Yes-Man today and he went ouot of his way to say the Kings will pick the best player available at 5 OR trade the pick for a better player. He mentioned this at least a couple times so the trade rumors may have some legs.

Then again, every possibility should always be on the table. Damn, I feel for the game too. Let’s continue to especulate

Can't see why Petrie wants to move Garcia so desperately

He was injured last year by his freak accident. I still think he makes a pretty solid starting SG or back-up PG/SG.

is Sims

I said it in some other thread, but I'll repeat it.

If Garcia is starting on your team, and your team is in the National Basketball Association, your team is picking top 5 in the lottery.

Garcia would be a great 6th man on a contender, but he’s just in the way of more talented youngsters in Sacramento. He’s also overpaid.

The only way

we trade down is if we pick up a solid C and a way out of the Noc contract. We can score the ball we just need an inside presence…..

I would have to say.....

That if the Kings pass on DMC at #5 it would be a huge mistake for a team that is in need of not only talent, but star potential as well.

by Mr.Noisewater on Jun 14, 2010 11:18 PM PDT reply actions

DMC at #5

Many are now on the DMC at 5 bandwagon -

but will he be there? And is GP on the wagon?

If not, trading down makes a lot of sense b/c I don’t see the difference between 6 and 10 or 13 (esp. if GP wants Whiteside)

by Watty4ever on Jun 15, 2010 9:29 AM PDT reply actions

If the Kings pass on DMC,

that may just give him the fire and chip on the shoulder to actually keep his weight under control and fulfill all of his potential for another team, kill the Kings every time he faces them in the future AND making the Kings look like idiots for passing on him.

Just the Kings?

Not the other 4 teams that passed on him?

Seriously, the least of our worries is a pissed off Cousins coming back to haunt us. We’ve got Kevin Martin for that already.

you're right...

probably not just t the Kings, I would throw the T’wolves in that too, maybe the Nets if he outperforms Favors at their predraft workout. But, I wouldn’t throw in the the wizards and 76ers into that. But, if he were to drop out of the top 5… just saying that would be extra motivation.

What I hope happens is that he outperforms Favors, and drops to us and that motivation of not being picked 3 or 4 motivates him OR Favors drops to us at 5 (which I doubt).

by andy sims on Jun 15, 2010 1:42 PM PDT up reply actions

why a smokescreen?

The best (only) way to move Noc and Cisco is by packaging them with something that other teams actually want, like the #5 pick. GP would not be doing his job if he wasn’t pimpin’ DMC, Favors and whoever else might be there at 5 to INCREASE interest in the #5 pick from around the league.

More interest = better price. And the other part of his job is to figure out if the team gets better by stayin’ put at 5 and adding 1 player, or dropping down, dumping contracts and adding 2 or more players at lower draft spot.
