PrintI've noticed a trend, probably since the middle of last season, although it may pre-date that time, where people respond to a post in a thread with "This."
I'm no intarwebs expert, but I have a vague recollection that people used to inspire a lot of rage by typing "I agree!" after any manner of commentary. While stupid and pointless, I will at least concede that it is actually a sentence.
"This" is lazy. "This" is pointless. "This" is not adding to the conversation.
Just a few extra words, elaborating or adding a new thought, or slightly different take would be so much more useful. Why don't you just rec something if you feel that it represents your exact sentiments? Clearly, the person who posted it is your soulmate, and you would marry them and have a million babies if your genitals hadn't withered away from spending so much time on the intarwebs.
The beauty of this site, and others like it, is the dialogue that it inspires, the different ways of seeing the same data, and the occasional gratuitous boob shot. I don't mind it if you have nothing to add, I just don't see why you insist on adding it. I'd just love it if you tried a little bit harder.
Effort, mark my words, will not only save SacTown Royalty, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA.

He is an online gamer and has been to other sites but had never seen this particular word used in this particular way. I replied, I think it means that I agree but I’m not sure. How many times do you write something and there is a whole list of people giving you props but not hitting the Rec button. The reason you recommend something is so others will read it. The easiest way to see good posts in a long thread is to turn the post green. Seems pretty simple here people.

I like saying “this” as a way of saying I agree. But I also have the inability to just leave it at that and find it painfully necessary to explain why I agree and make further points. I know I’ve replied with just the word “this,” on several occasions, but I usually prefer not to.

I’m getting the feeling that a lot of people view this as a message board, ala *****fans.com (leaving that blank for the protection of those that have never been there). I see that with the comments and especially some of the FanPosts going on here. Comments are for people to actively discuss things. I don’t care if someone says “this” or “rec’d” but it makes more sense not to clutter the comment feed with that when you can click a button that does the same thing.
Also, people need to quit writing FanPosts that could be a comment elsewhere. My goal any time I write a FanPost is for it to be rec’d enough to be put in the Recommended FanPosts list. My goal is for the quality to be on par with the featured writers on this site. Writing something that’s 75 words that’s basically a comment on another post is pointless. I haven’t written a FanPost that hasn’t been given the 5 recs. I take my time writing them, and am selective about what I write about. I’ve only written a few, but that’s because I prefer quality over quantity

I totally agree that people should post substantive and thoughtful discourse oriented towards the edification of those equally inclined and that the sum of these particularly volumnous portrayals of taking extant and tangential information and molding into the Picasso of posts much be crucial and inherent quality for all those that submit their thoughts, of course, in elegantly verbose prose.
Or you could just post “Meh” or “This” or whatever the hell you want. I don’t think this warrants any emotional investment on my part (Translated: I don’t give a crap).

"This" and "rec'd" are not equal to me.
I write “this” if I simply agree with the person’s idea/statement/opinion enough to want to let them know.
I click “rec’d” if it qualifies as a “this” AND it’s also something creative, exceptionally interesting, hilarious, or such something uniquely wonderful.
That’s why I feel the need to occasionally write “this” or “I agree!” rather than simply clicking rec’d.

I said “get serious” took a bunch of crap and this year the guy is back with this trade. We send the Griz Noc and the 5 pick for Thabeet and Conley. Yeah right! Cousins/Johnson/Monroe for Thabeet. Then the X-Files being, looking like some kind of blue-green Jackie Chan with Isabella Rossellini lips and breath that reeked of vanilla Chig Champa,
did a slow-mo Matrix descent out of the butt end of the banana vessel and hovered above my bug-eyes, my gaping jaw, and my sweaty L. Ron Hubbard upper lip and all I could think was: "I hope Uncle Martin here doesn't notice that I pissed my f***in' pants."
