ESPN (Insider) Rumors Update
Kings coming around on Cousins?
10:42AM ET
UPDATE: This likely doesn't have strong bearing on the Kings' eventual choice, but it does deserve a quick mention.
From Gery Woelfel of the Journal Times: "Sacramento Rookie of the Year Tyreke Evans has let it be known to Kings officials that he wouldn't mind the team drafting Kentucky forward DeMarcus Cousins with the fifth overall pick."
---
As we've noted previously, DeMarcus Cousins projects as the best player in this year's draft, according to ESPN's John Hollinger as well as some teams' front offices.
But there are questions about his demeanor and attitude, and it's made some teams a bit wary of him, despite his immense talents.
In his latest mock draft, ESPN's Chad Ford has the Kings selecting Georgetown's Greg Monroe with their No. 5 pick as they're likely going to draft a big to fill a need up front.
But according to sources speaking to Ford, Cousins was incredibly impressive in a recent workout for the Kings.
So are the Kings now seriously considering Cousins instead?
Ford writes on the NBA Draft Blog on Monday that it appears the team is now split between the two:
ESPN's Chad Ford
Cousins impressive in workout, but Monroe, trade could still happen
"Sources say [Kings GM Geoff] Petrie has been high on Monroe all year and before the Cousins workout, felt that Monroe was the safer pick. However, Cousins' size and superior talent have put him seriously in the mix at No. 5. Cousins had a phenomenal workout in Sacramento on Saturday according to multiple sources. He took around 200 shots, all of which the Kings logged, and he hit 78 percent of them -- the best clip they've had in the 40 players who've come into town. Cousins also is getting into better shape. He's down to 13 percent body fat from the 16.4 percent number he logged in Chicago. He still needs to drop another 10 pounds, but he's getting there. At this point it looks like the team is split between two players. But now Cousins has two legs up on Monroe. Not only did Cousins have a better season, he also had a better workout. Also don't be surprised if the Kings end up trading the pick for a veteran who can help the team improve immediately. With young players like Evans, Omri Casspi, Spencer Hawes and Donte Greene already on team, the Kings would like to add some experience."

Sounds to me there is no magic smokescreen, no great strategy being played here
It’s just an organization weighing the pros and cons and seeing what options are available. No decision has been made yet.
Please note the 11 next to my name. All others are frauds.
Nowhere have I seen any statement that are quotes from any Kings FO personel
Sources could mean anyone from the players rep, another writer, or dare I say Blogger.

Didn't Evans say that many weeks ago?
And have we really had 40 players in already?
Rocks are free, and slingshots easily stolen.
ESPN Insider blows
They basically take whatever is being printed in other local papers and claim it as their own.
I believe Sims had a post on it ages ago (that they are an aggregator).
Everything posted above I have seen in Yahoo (Woj’s article) or the Milwakee Journal.
Chad lays claim to
Actually now that I look at the rumors page at ESPN
I see that pretty much every story has an attribution and link to the source they pull from. Chad Ford tends to add a separate comment (noted) on the story itself.
Pacifist ass-kisser
It still pisses me off
They package other people’s work (namely regional newspapers that are rapidly disappearing) as “inside” information and charge for it.
Then stop paying for it and look up the regional newspapers yourself.

I don't pay for it
Hoops Hype NBA rumors page has everyone of these stories listed for free. Tell a friend.
Well if Hoops Hype does it
I guess it’s ok, since they aren’t charging for it? How does that help these regional newspapers?
Pacifist ass-kisser
You link directly to the online source
It takes you to the paper, which at least gives them traffic.
I’m not here to argue about which is better. The way ESPN packages it just rubs me wrong.
???
You click on every link on Hoops Hype? Don’t get me wrong, I understand if you don’t like paying for something you can find elsewhere for free just don’t pretend this is an issue about ESPN screwing over the local newspapers.

It's not a big deal.
I think it’s a little deceptive, when you charge people for the content and label it as “Insider” information, and it really is just a collection of free stories, but I didn’t intent for my comment to highjack the thread.
I get what you are talking about
and I agree. Whenever I see an ESPN “insider” story that sounds interesting I just mosey on down to NBA.com and they will have the same article (sometimes the exact same article) for anyone to peruse at their own pleasure.

Dang... He dropped his Body Fat Percentage
16.4 to 13… Should he have a spot on a Subway commercial. Thats pretty good, Anybody else buy that? or think thats impressive.
Statistics are like a girl in a bikini. They show a lot, but not everything.
I doubt he dropped it 3.4%
That’s a solid 10 pounds of fat lost in a matter of 2 or 3 weeks isn’t it? I highly doubt it, however, I am not really sure how accurate the tests are for body fat or whether something like water weight can screw up the measurements.

Well in the video interview from the Kings site
Cousins had said they measured his body fat to be 14%, but he was still 290.
If anything, his workout regiment may be adding muscle to his body, which may explain why his weight is still high but his body fat dropped.
10 pounds of muscle though? That's pretty darn quick.
I was just thinking either the 16% one was wrong or the 14% was wrong. I dunno though.

Well if he dropped his body fat percentage
From 16.4 to 14%, it would be approximately 5 or 6 lbs of fat he lost or converted into muscle.
Body fat can fluxuate depending on time of day and other factors....
It is a number that can be manipulated pretty easily.
Truth is, on talent alone, and nothing else, I’d rank DMC 1st.

Yeah, THAT and what he's doing in the gym.
2 weeks is a VERY long time in fitness. Trust me when I tell you that after 2 weeks at Marine Corps boot I was down almost 25lbs…no joke.
I would imagine he has access to a damn good trainer. So I just give the guy the benefit of the doubt. It’s not hard to believe someone would bust-ass to improve draft stock.
My conclusion: All the experts and GM’s are doing a lot of guessing from their A$$es. Well I’m sitting on mine right now about to do the same, so excuse me if I pause occasionally to lift a cheek to check for any obvious emanations of genius.
