Hawes, Nocioni Traded to Philadelphia for Samuel Dalembert

Spencer Hawes and Andres Nocioni traded to Philadelphia for Samuel Dalembert. Chad Ford of ESPN reporting it. More soon.

UPDATE 1: We've written about how Samuel Dalembert could help in the past.

UPDATE 2: Here are the salary ramifications: Hawes makes $2.9 million this season, and then he's a restricted free agent with a $4 million qualifying offer. Nocioni makes $6.8 million this year and $6.6 million 2011-12. Dalembert makes $14.8 million this season (thanks to a 15% trade kicker), and then he's a free agent. So the Kings take on an extra $5.1 million in 2010-11 in order to save $6.6 million in the 2011-12 season. The Kings are now projected to have about $15 million in cap space for this summer.

UPDATE 3: I believe that we can definitely take two things away from this, neither of which really matters going forward:

1. Either Geoff Petrie or Paul Westphal or both were really disappointed by Hawes last season.

2. Petrie gets a bogey on the 2007 draft.

UPDATE 4: FanHouse's Sam Amick talked to Dalembert's agent Marc Cornstein: "I’ve said for a long time that if I could hand pick a team, (the Kings) would be the best fit for him."

What is Sammy getting paid?

Since it’s just for one year, I’m o.k. with this in principal, but does it help the Kings really get better over the long run?

Why are we worried about the RIGHT now, right now?

We had the THIRD worst record in the league, we should be positioning ourselves for 3-4 years from now and Spencer FITS that mold. Why in the HELL are we worried about RIGHT NOW.

There’s at least a dozen larger expiring deals that we could have gotten for Nocioni to releive teams of financial obligations immediately. Why the HELL are we sweetening the pot with Hawes for ANY of these? Seriously! This is a TERRIBLE trade and I like Dalembert as a fit here.

How do you figure?

They get below the LTT threshold this year and Nocioni’s 2 year deal is still less than Dalembert’s deal which saves them money THIS year and NEXT year.

I would have thought a straight up swap of Noc for Daly was a fair an equitable deal for both teams.

I feel like we got ZERO compensation for Hawes. This really sucks. I would have thought a #2 for #5/Hawes swap while getting the Sixers under the LTT would have been a good deal for both teams. Or at least have Speights or Holiday coming back? What gives Geoff? You couldn’t have just traded Nocioni for Peja or Redd or someone like that to get an expiring, keep Hawes at Center and draft the BPA at #5?

Does this mean we’re more inclined to draft Monroe?

by Smills9133 on Jun 17, 2010 1:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Let's be honest though, Smills

You have unrealistic expectations for what trades are possible. The only trades you like are the ones where the other team gets completely, unbelievably screwed. And most GMs aren’t that stupid.

by nbrans on Jun 17, 2010 1:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Let's logically go through this though....

Dalembert’s owed what? 12-13 million dollars this year? Nocioni is owed roughly 13 million over two years. THe money is near identical, just that Nocioni is owed it over TWO years.

Dalembert was DONE in Philly. And had been for quite some time.

The sixers are about 4-6 million over the LTT as is when you factor in their #2 pick. Dumping Dalembert for Nocioni straight up in the summer(when we have the cap space) would get them completely below the Tax line. They could go and add Cousins, Favors at #2 or they could roll with Speights, Brand as their 5. They had options.

I just don’t see why it was prudent to add Hawes to the deal(without getting some sort of incentive back) when a straight up Nocioni for Dalembert swap was equitable both financial(actually favors Philly with the lack of a LTT payment next year) and from a basketball POV as both are still fringe starters/good 6th men candidates with their impact on the court.

Adding Hawes to the deal makes ZERO logical sense and was completely unnecessary if you ask me.

by Smills9133 on Jun 17, 2010 1:46 PM PDT up reply actions

In the real world

Philly didn’t have to trade Dalembert, and certainly not for Nocioni straight up. If that was all it took to get the deal done don’t you think Geoff Petrie is intelligent enough to know that? That’s just a completely unrealistic expectation.

I mean, come on, Dalembert for Noc straight up? That’s insane.

It’s not just about the money, although that’s definitely a benefit going in for the Kings because they have still more potential cap room going into 2011.

by nbrans on Jun 17, 2010 1:51 PM PDT up reply actions

If they didn't want to pay the TAX they would need to trade something

LIKELY Dalembert being the salary that COULD be cut, due to his massive contract.

So if anything, we being 20 million UNDER the cap and them being 5-6 million OVER the tax threshold. We had the position of leverage and BLEW it.

by Smills9133 on Jun 17, 2010 2:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Who says they care about the tax?

The 76ers are owned by Comcast, it’s not like they’re hurting for cash. And if all they cared about was cutting salary they could have done it a hell of a lot easier than trading Dalembert for Nocioni.

This was a basketball move – they obviously wanted to get something for Dalemebert while they could, and were willing to take on Noc for an extra year to make it happen.

by nbrans on Jun 17, 2010 2:19 PM PDT up reply actions

by nbrans on Jun 17, 2010 1:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Exactly how does Dalembert have anymore value than Nocioni?

Both are inadequate starters, but fringe starters nontheless.

by Smills9133 on Jun 17, 2010 2:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Dalembert is significantly better

Your premise is null, thus your argument is void.

"Matt Cain's better at this than I've ever been at anything in my life. He's better at this than you'll ever be, at anything. Matt Cain has a gift. He has a gift, and when you acknowledge that, then maybe we will have something to talk about."

by otis29 on Jun 17, 2010 2:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Not for Philadelphia he's not.

Philly has big guys that can defend. They have ZERO shooters. As much as Nocioni CHUCKS it, he’s still one of the top 2-3 shooters on their roster, something they LACK considerably.

The fact that Nocioni gives them FINANCIAL incentive in the form of roughly 10 million dollars(factoring in the difference in contract PLUS the LT Payment savings they acquire through this trade) makes this a NO-BRAINER for philly. Adding Hawes just adds sugar on top for philly.

This deal is an easy no-brainer for Philly.

Next, try again with your pitiful logic.

by Smills9133 on Jun 17, 2010 2:18 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't get it

Are you a Philly fan, or a Sacramento fan? Because you seem concerned with the fact that Philly might actually benefit from a trade they just completed.

nbrans mentioned that you seem more upset that we didn’t absolutely screw Philly than happy that we’ve significantly upgraded our low post defense – to the point you are hallucinating over Hawes and Nocioni’s trade value.

"Matt Cain's better at this than I've ever been at anything in my life. He's better at this than you'll ever be, at anything. Matt Cain has a gift. He has a gift, and when you acknowledge that, then maybe we will have something to talk about."

What's funny is that now that Dalembert is a King

If Philly offered Noc/Hawes back to us you’d argue that Dalembert is a SUPERSTAR CENTER and that Noc is WASHED UP AND NO ONE WANTS HIM and the Kings would be CRAZY to take him back in a trade.

You’d probably take Hawes back though, because I know you guys are soul sisters and everything.

Smills, the Sixers don’t take on Nocioni’s contract unless they get something they want.

And while it’s true that Dalembert had become an unpopular player in Philly, he’s still further along an an NBA center than Hawes.

It’s a good deal for both teams but especially for the Kings. We get immediate help on defense, which is priority number 1 and which Hawes could never provide, and we get huge cap relief and flexibility.

Look at it this way. If we would have kept Noc, he would have been unhappy and most likely would have spent most of his time on the bench. What a waste of his salary.

With Dalembert, we are going to see an immediate impact on our defense. We got compensation for Hawes. The deal wouldn’t have been a go without him.

I doubt whether this is going to have any impact of what Petrie does with the #5 pick. He may just be covering his bases in the event Cousins is unavailable. If he is available, then we are going to see one heck of a turnaround on our front court.

and I think moving Hawes definitely underlines the fact that the Kings are planning on drafting a center.

Dalembert is a short term solution, and can keep the Kings from falling apart in the paint while the next guy learns the NBA ropes.

Cousins, Favors, Whiteside and Monroe all are more draft-worthy now that Hawes is gone and Dalembert is in place.

It's worth taking on Nocioni for two years

just to see if Hawes turns into a true NBA starter. Holiday, Iggy, Turner, Brand, Williams, Thadeus, Brand, Noc, Hawes, Speights, and Meeks. That is one deep team with a mixture of older and younger guys. Collins will probably be able to turn that team into a playoff team, it really all depends on Brand, though.

I don't like hearing this though from

Chad Ford

For the Kings, this could also change their draft equation. The team has been looking at drafting DeMarcus Cousins and Greg Monroe, both centers. With this deal, it could allow them to address another need at the three. the Kings have been high on both Al-Farouq Aminu and Gordon Hayward.

"For five decades (and counting), these fans have been blessed with West, Baylor, Wilt, Kareem, Magic, Shaq and Kobe. Seven of the 15 best players ever. At some point, the gravy train will end. The Lakers will bottom out like the Knicks did last decade, submarined by bad moves, poor signings and unlucky drafts. Their fans will flee in droves. Jack will pass away. The buzz will be gone. That's how the NBA works -- in a 30-team league, you can't always get lucky, not even if you're a big-market team with deep pockets. I don't know if that day is three years off or 30, but it's coming." Bill Simmons

Maybe it's just Petrie hedging his bets.

If Cousins is off the board at #5, is Monroe or Whiteside better than Dalembert?

If Cousins is available at #5, Dalembert frees up mega cap space next season.

Bold Prediction: Whoever we pick 5th this year will have a better NBA season than whoever was picked 5th last year.

I like this trade

We didn’t really give up much for a proven rebounder/shot blocker. Doesn’t eat up all our cap space. And I don’t think this changes our draft either. I still feel Cousins is the guy if he’s there at 5. A Sammy/DeMarcus front court is big and long. Think Bynum/Gasol size wise.

Brings in someone to be a presence defensively in the middle and gobble up rebounds. Also brings in someone whose FG% is one of the best in the NBA like Landry.

Although petrie doesn’t typically trade down, if the Kings do trade down and draft Whiteside, Dalembert will offer some good tutelage for him at least 1 year on the defensive end which Whiteside has stated he feels he may need a year or two to get his body up to par in the league.

I think this trade makes the trade down for Whiteside more likely. Cousins would’ve been able to play significant minutes, while Whiteside would be more of a project. But now the Kings aren’t so deparate for an immediate solution at center. Now the Kings would have time to bring Hassan along more gradually with Sam in place.

Sounds like

everything is falling into Petrie’s plan.

Step 1: Hype the most skilled center in the draft.

Step 2: Make a trade with the team that has the #2 pick, taking their center.

Step 4: The combination of #1 and #2 convince said team to pick said center with the number 2 pick, causing the consensus BPA to fall to us.

Step 5: Pick someone no one has ever heard of.

Brilliant!

Good Deal

For the Kings. Gets them out of the Nocioni contract, and keeps them from having to decide what to do with Hawes after this season. Dalembert gives them some defense and shot-blocking and will get plenty of easy dunks off Tyreke’s penetration. The Kings can go any direction with their draft pick now. Go big and further bolster their frontcourt, get a quality shooter with the pick, trade for either of these. Dalembert alone isn’t franchise-changing, but it puts the team in a much better position to make moves.

Yuck Dalembert

Although to get rid of Hawes and Noc I can live with Dalembert for a season. Loved Hawes talent but he’s not focused on basketball, he gave more effort arguing with Kings management about offseason requirements.

Should see some good Eastern conference basketball at Arco this year. Kings are scoring more than 95 points unless Reke goes for 40 points.

by bignerd on Jun 17, 2010 12:52 PM PDT reply actions

As far the trade goes...

Not bad. There is a risk in using Hawes to dump Noc since he is still a young player, but Hawes just hasn’t shown enough yet to feel any sort of confidence in him moving forward.

In 2007 we took the very skilled but physically less gifted Hawes because the Bulls took Noah right ahead of us. Noah struggles his first year adjusting to the NBA, then proceeds to become a defensive anchor and a building block for them moving forward. Hawes shows small flashes, but is largely ineffective. We use Hawes to dump a bad contract.

I am just hoping there isn’t a 2010 repeat of that. I hope Cousins falls to us and we take him. Not interested in Monroe one bit.

by TheRaven on Jun 17, 2010 12:55 PM PDT reply actions

Next moves

Philly is going to take Cousins or Favors, the Nets are going to take whose left, leaving the Kings to take whoever Minnesota leaves on the board between Johnson and Turner. I think Petrie will keep the pick and go small.

If he gets Johnson, he’ll try to sign Joe Johnson and if he gets Turner, he’ll try to sign Rudy Gay. They’ll also resign Brockman and Ime.

"I know we certainly gave up a lot to get him, but we do have other players on the perimeter who we can plug in. We haven’t had anybody who we feel is a go-to guy in the post. So we gave up a lot to get a lot, and we’re real excited about adding Carl." - Paul Westphal

Talentwise, I love it

Dalembert rebounds well and protects the paint, swatting shots with tenacity. He doesn’t provide much in way of offense, and he doesn’t need to with our personnel.

Keep in mind that past season he was quite effective with a penetrating and passing guard in Allen Iverson (while he was there), who would get into the paint and dish off to Dalembert. Tyreke can do the same.

Tell you what…take your list and tell me which of those players is a better rebounder and defender than Dalembert. Let’s start there ok?

"Matt Cain's better at this than I've ever been at anything in my life. He's better at this than you'll ever be, at anything. Matt Cain has a gift. He has a gift, and when you acknowledge that, then maybe we will have something to talk about."

try about half of them...

Kings needed help on D and rebounding…Dalembert is top center 5 in each of those categories.

Players who I value less than Dalembert

Chandler
Biedrins (close one but won’t bank on him with the injuries and contract)
Shaq
Big Z
Jermain O’Neil
Dampier
B. Miller
HAWES
Zach Randolph (I might be the only one on this one but I can’t stand his off the court crap)
Aldrich

David Lee and Bargnani are not centers and if they play center I would rather have Dalembert for one year.

Please note the 11 next to my name. All others are frauds.

and most if not all of these guys ....

have averaged 9.0+ reb/gm and 2.0 blks/gm over each of the last 3 years, are healthy (Oden, Jermaine O’Neal, Kmart, Big Z, Chandler, etc.) and don’t demand the ball on O …

Why Spence

This trade sux cuz I wanted to give Spencer a little more time to develop and now he’s gone I sure hope he don’t become a beast and smash on us every year

by c-rich on Jun 17, 2010 1:17 PM PDT reply actions

Spencer

And beast and smash dont really go together.

Im back in Sac this week visiting and all day long I have just been reading and laughing. Most were directly related to Mikes epic list but that was a good one too Aykis.

Spencer, I wish you the best.

You have skills no other big man on our roster had— the footwork to be effective in the post from awkward angles and the vision to find open teammates at all the right times. Given time, these kinds of skills can make a player a nightmare to defend in the post. I, for one, sincerely hoped you would stay with us and realize the potential of these talents, giving our opponents nightmares as you scored and facilitated like few big men can. I’m sad to see you go.

I wish you the best in Philly. May you realize your potential, and may you overcome the tendency to linger on the perimeter. May you be paired with a guard who effectively feeds you in the post and a coach who builds you effectively as a player.

At times, I was disappointed by your progress here in Sacramento, but I hoped it would all be worth it later on when we saw how a matured Spencer Hawes was a key cog on contenting teams. I’ll miss the flashes of skill that made it so easy to imagine that future.

You're absolutely free to disagree, but I've been a fairly consistent fan of Hawes.

As I stated, I enjoyed seeing flashes of skill in him (footwork and touch) that I didn’t see in anyone else on the team and imagining how those skills could add to our team in the future as he matured as a player. Few players of his age are finished products, and I wanted to hold on to him for the sake of what the future might bring.

If you disagree, feel free to state a contrasting opinion, but know that we (the membership of STR) were not unanimous in wanting to see him go.

Philly is taking Cousins

That’s why GP is working out Monroe and Whiteside, his “second tier” centers. Minnesota has claimed Wes Johnson as their favorite, but if Turner is still on the board at four (i.e. Jersey picks Favors), the Wolves may take him, leaving the Kings Johnson at five. I like Johnson at five, but maybe GP pulls off a trade. How about the five to Minnesota for some combo of the #16 (Whiteside?), #23 (Jordan Crawford?), and/or the rights to Rubio?

by basketball galactica on Jun 17, 2010 1:31 PM PDT reply actions

But if Jersey takes Turner,

then Minny takes Wes Johnson, it leaves Favors for the Kings. Dang, I want Cousins on the Kings, but Favors is a nice consolation. At least Hawes is outta here! I hated that guy!

by basketball galactica on Jun 17, 2010 1:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Are you kidding me

If this somehow causes Favors to drop to #5 it’s best hatched draft plan ever. Favors ain’t the consolation prize!

by bignerd on Jun 17, 2010 1:50 PM PDT up reply actions

I still like Cousins moreso than Favors honestly.

Favors would be nice, but Daly’s a rental plain and simple.

You have Daly to ease Cousins into the NBA and take some pressure off him to produce right away, but then when Daly goes, Cousins enters the scene full-time.

If we end up with Favors then we have 3 semo-young to young PF’s on the roster. Cousins makes the most sense and IMO is the better player.

if Turner drops to 5

which could happen, does GP have even more trade partners?

by Watty4ever on Jun 17, 2010 1:38 PM PDT reply actions

I imagine he'll get a bunch of calls

but hopefully he’ll tell them to go away and grab Turner. Though, honestly I can’t see Turner lasting past NJ and Minny.

Anyone think there was a wink-wink, nudge-nudge aspect of this deal

That by sending Hawes to Philly, Philly will pass on Cousins leaving him available to us at #5 to take. Why else include Hawes? Nocioni’s contract was more appealing to the Sixers than Dalembert straight up due to their financial obligations THIS year. Why else move Hawes? There was no need to sweeten the deal.

by Smills9133 on Jun 17, 2010 1:39 PM PDT reply actions   1 recs

great point...

Petrie must has at least asked who they were trying to get at #2….right?

by ucla06 on Jun 17, 2010 1:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Don't think so...

Wouldn’t the Kings have switched picks with Philly if they really wanted Cousins? You can’t trust that 1) Philly would actually skip DMC, and 2) NJ and Minny would also pass on him.

by basketball galactica on Jun 17, 2010 1:47 PM PDT up reply actions

They have their young Center now in Hawes.

I think this solidifies Turner at #2.

C: Hawes
PF: Speights
SF: Iguodala
SG: Turner
PG: Holiday

That’s a nice young 5 squad there and Hawes makes sense for them due to the fact they have limited shooting from their guards.

I think Favors goes 3, Johnson goes 4 and Cousins or maybe Monroe goes 5.

by Smills9133 on Jun 17, 2010 1:52 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree.

The rumors have been that Collins wants a big and the GM wants Turner. This solves the issue. The GM just went out and got a higher skill level big for Collins to work with and now he can draft Turner. The problem with Philly has been the same thing for a while. They bring in a whole bunch of athletes with low basketball IQs and it limits their ability to do anything complex. The swap of Dalembert for Hawes opens up the floor for Speights and Iggy to work the interior. I’m pretty sure that Eddy Jordan wished this trade happened before last season, he would probably still have his job.

Truth is, on talent alone, and nothing else, I’d rank DMC 1st.

Miller/Salmons trade

I wonder if the Kings would like a do-over on that one. Yes, they were reportedly losing money at the time and needed to make a move (and then unceremoniously buy-out Drew Gooden), but Miller would be off the books and Salmons would’ve had a reasonable player option he might not have even exercised. Just thinking out loud here, but it’s too bad the Kings ended up getting one season of Dalembert for the pair…

As much as I’ve grown to hate Spencer, I’m not loving this trade and think he was worth more than a rent-a-center who might help the team win another 5-10 games. But what do I know? Here’s hoping for Cousins…

I think you're underselling the financial aspect of this deal for the Kings

After next season, heading into the new CBA, the only contracts on our books that aren’t on a Rookie scale or a min. contract (Brockman, maybe another roster-filler) will be Cisco and Beno. I guarantee you 29 other teams wish they will have that financial flexibility at that point.

Dalembert's negatives

Stiff, no lateral movement abilities, not strong. Many of you say we’re getting a big D improvement, but you are wrong. You will hate D’s inability to guard the pick n roll. In addition, those of you who think having D as a mentor for Cousins is a good idea are wrong about that as well. D is constantly questioned for his work ethic and motor in Philadelphia. Not the “example” we need in Sac.

by sactown on Jun 17, 2010 2:01 PM PDT reply actions

That, or....

the Kings are dealing with a disgruntled Nocioni and a frustrated Hawes. Delembert isn’t Hakeem Part 2, but he’s a significant defensive upgrade for this team. The Kings got more for Noc/Hawes than most of us realistically would have expected. Rebounding and shot-blocking are sorely needed with the defensive deficiencies of the rest of the Kings. The same negatives you list for Dalembert can be said about Hawes, so at least there’s some positives to list with Dalembert. Worst case scenario is he’s a one-year rental. Not much to lose here.

by IamPurple on Jun 17, 2010 3:03 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

Plus, Dalembert may have renewed motivations...

as both a change of scenery and the fact that he is in a contract year might be large factors.

FUCK YES!

I love Dalembert, and he is probably glad as all hell to get the eff out of Philly. I know I’ve been absent so far through summer, but this is a great trade. We gain a lot in talent, and this opens the door for Wesley Johnson to come in at the 2.

I always had hope for Spence, but through three seasons, he just kind of coasted. Have fun in the ultra-liberal Philadelphia.
