Around SBN: Indy 500: 'Greatest Spectacle In Racing' Set For Sunday

"We’re excited about the acquisition of Samuel Dalembert. He will certainly bring a defensive presence and increase our ability to defend around the basket with his rebounding, shot-blocking and athleticism. I think he’ll add a very different look to our team defensively and we’re really excited about having him. I also want to thank Spencer and Andres for their contributions here and wish them well with Philadelphia. It’s been an enjoyable time with both of them."

Perhaps Dalembert

would help mentor Whiteside (on the defensive end) if we end up with him

"I have missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I have lost almost 300 games. On 26 occasions I have been entrusted to take the game winning shot...and missed. And I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why... I succeed." Michael Jordan.

by Surprise Team on Jun 17, 2010 1:45 PM PDT reply actions

Dalembert never worked to develop great defensive skills and footwork

He’s just a athleticly natural defensive talent. Whiteside is pretty similar, so I’m not sure SD has anything to actually teach anyone.

And I think most GMs would take Dalembert over Hawes based on the last couple years. This is not to say that Hawes can have a great career from here on out.

Wrong Analysis

I don’t think Mike Murray is wrong about most of the guys on his list, excepting the list of power forwards, because I don’t really find that relevant.

But it’s wrong question. It doesn’t matter if Dalembert is better than Howard or Bogut etc. What matters is that he’s better than Hawes, particularly in the areas of defense and rebounding.

Dalembert is better than Hawes.

Now let’s try to get better at shooting guard and small forward. Draft Johnson or Turner and sign Joe Johnson or Rudy Gay. Or make one of those moves and strengthen the other position next year.

Eventually we’ll come back around to the center position, but this is an upgrade.

"I know we certainly gave up a lot to get him, but we do have other players on the perimeter who we can plug in. We haven’t had anybody who we feel is a go-to guy in the post. So we gave up a lot to get a lot, and we’re real excited about adding Carl." - Paul Westphal

I'd skip this whole list

I don’t see anyone who is an improvement on what we already have, or if they are, it’s a miniscule different and open to debate. I’d rather go for the guys who are a clear upgrade. Yes, they cost real money, and I only see 3-4 who I’d both want and who might also consider coming here:

  • SG: Joe Johnson, Ray Allen.
  • SF: Rudy Gay.
  • C: Tyson Chandler, Brendan Haywood.

And getting Dalembert takes us out of the hunt for Chandler and Haywood for now. I don’t really think Ray Allen is the right fit at this point, either. That leaves Johnson and Gay as possible targets who would be upgrades over our incumbents.

"I know we certainly gave up a lot to get him, but we do have other players on the perimeter who we can plug in. We haven’t had anybody who we feel is a go-to guy in the post. So we gave up a lot to get a lot, and we’re real excited about adding Carl." - Paul Westphal

No doubt

Johnson will want more than $10 mil a year. I think he’s worth it. Not so with Allen or Gay, but Gay is worth $8-10 million.

They may want to contend, but they also want to get paid and they are not the premium tier guys the other teams with money will be fighting over like LeBron and DWade. A lineup with Tyreke, Joe Johnson, Wesley Johnson, Landry and Dalembert with possible backups like Beno, Cisco, JT, Donte, Casspi, Udoka and Brockman is not too shabby.

because of this trade it’s a lock that we are going to draft Monroe! I would love to go after Korver, but no way Utah lets him go.

Reke, Udka, Greene, Laundry, Dalembert
Beno, Garcia, Casspi, Monroe, JT

Yes i’m calling that we are going to draft Monroe. How do i know? Because we just traded the white Monroe today. Monroe, Beno and JT will work great together, they can pass, hit a 15 foot jumper, and lets not forget how Garcia and Casspi will open up the lane with the deep ball.

I like that trade for the Kings

Dalembert is also a great character guy, as e.g. his actions around the Haiti earthquake have demonstrated. After seeing all that tragedy and pledging a significant amount of his own money as well as raising awareness among the media and other NBA players, he flew back via Miami not in a chartered plane, but in the economy class of a regular flight to Philly. Which was late. Then they drove him right into the arena 10 minutes before tipoff, where he entered the court to play against my Blazers. And not even badly, putting in a 10 points and 15 rebounds performance completely tired.

by Norsktroll on Jun 17, 2010 3:06 PM PDT reply actions

Good trade...

Sammy gives us defense and rebounding, and no matter what happens in the draft either Cousins, Favors, or Johnson will be there for us at 5. Can’t go wrong with any of those picks.

I think this trade

works out for us well right now. Gets us the defensive presence we’ve been lacking, and gets rid of someone who didn’t want to be here.

As far as losing Spencer, i don’t think it hurts the Kings next year. But I do think he’ll turn into a good NBA player. Not an all-star, but he’ll be good.

As far as the draft goes, I STILL would like to see Petrie pull the trigger on Cousins if they stay at #5 … you can never have enough big men. I fully expect him to trade down (no reason why, just a gut feeling), but if they stay, I’d want Cousins still.

Yes, but what is the move within the move

76ers lose their defensive minded Center… Does this mean that they take Cousins instead? I think it likely. That would change the order of the picks and I would not be surprised if we end up getting somebody that Petrie wants because of it…

Turner > Johnson > Monroe?

Sending JT to Minny with the 5 for Love works for me as well. Maybe it’s too much, but I think Love > JT. Besides Dalembert, though, it may make us too small. Maybe we trade them JT and filler for the 4. That would help their frontline situation and get us another pick to turn into Cousins, Turner or Favors.

"I know we certainly gave up a lot to get him, but we do have other players on the perimeter who we can plug in. We haven’t had anybody who we feel is a go-to guy in the post. So we gave up a lot to get a lot, and we’re real excited about adding Carl." - Paul Westphal

Love was a No. 5 draft pick in the same draft as JT

Love is two years younger and beats JT in career scoring average (only by 0.5 points, though), rebounds (by 2 a game), assists (barely, which is surprising), free throw percentage (80 to 70), 3 point percentage (30 to 6), win shares, offensive ranking, defensive ranking, fewer fouls, etc. Turnovers and field goal percentage (JT 48-46) are pretty much a wash.

Love is better, but not clearcut better, but I think he can/will be.

I think Love is also locked up longer at fairly cheap salaries.

But Scenario 1 being Philly takes Turner (which I think will be the case) and Scenario 2 Philly takes Favors. They just lost their only defensive presence. Hawes and Favors up front actually sounds pretty nice. Cousins isn’t known for his defense.

Maybe when he gets bigger

But for now he’s really much more of a PF. I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility by any means, I just think a C fits that roster a lot better than a PF. But if they feel that Favors is the best big they may just draft him and figure it out later.

by nbrans on Jun 17, 2010 5:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Certainly, Cousins would have a greater immediate impact at Center

But, if there trying to rebuild, they might not be that concerned about the immediate future, and think that 3 years down the road Favors will be the better Center. And, for the time are willing to struggle at Center while he develops his low post game. As far as shoot blocking and rebounding goes, Favors may be closer to producing Dalemberts numbers than Cousins.

our draft board should be......

Favors

depending on who is there. Keep the 5th pick and draft whoever is left in this order. If we go big in the 1st round, we go small in the 2nd round (Crawford, Randle, Warren, Rautins) and if we land Johnson in the 1st round we take Jerome Jordan in the 2nd round. He will be there.

Effect on overall team rebounding.

If everything else remains equal – say we play Dalembert the same number of minutes as Hawes, same number of games, everybody performs the same as last season – then Dalembert would get about 50% more rebounds than Hawes. That alone would place us in a tie with San Antonio for 3rd best rebounding percentage (we were 15th last season).

monroe sucks

after goin’ back n forth for weeks, the one thing I know today is that Monroe does nothing for me as Kings fan -

he seems too small to play C – I know he’s listed at 6’10", 250, but he looks really small on tape

nothing explosive & exemplary about his game … except maybe his passing?

guy disappears on tape – I can’t even find “highlights” of Monroe – it’s like he can barely dunk, no monster blocks, no nothin

Anybody else, and I mean ANYBODY, I’m okay … trade up, trade down, boycott the pick …
