Not a 4 Player Draft Anymore!

Stay connected for news and updates

When the Sacramento Kings received the 4th overall pick in the 2009 draft when we contained the best chances of obtaining Blake Griffin with the first pick, I felt cheated and cursed the David Stern and the NBA. With hindsight, it remains apparent that receinving the #4 pick was a blessing in disguise that resulted in the 2009 Rookie of the Year and arguably the best player in the draft.  When the Sacramento Kings received this year's 5th overall pick in what was supposedly a "four player draft," I felt screwed again, but as I continued my research, I found that this guy makes me feel lucky for containing a top 5 pick.

That's right, I am drooling over the thought of Wesley Johnson in a Sacramento Kings jersey as Tyreke's running mate.  After the jump I will share some of the research that I have found.

Positives of Wesley Johnson

  • Measurements- I am not comparing talent or skill with the following data from DraftExpress.com, but I am highlighting how he favorably measures up to the league's best Small Forwards, so without further ado, take a look how Johnson measures up with the league's best Small Forwards:

  • Fits a Need at SG- His projected position is at SF, but the only reason he is projected to be a wing is his weakness of creating his own shot. With us, he doesn't need to worry about ball handling, because that's Tyreke's job. He is a lights out shooter with athleticism to dunk from anywhere on the court. Watch this video and I dare you to say that this didn't make you giddy about pairing him with Tyreke.
  • Smart, Calm, and Hard Worker- Take a look at his interviews from the Draft Combine.  He addresses each question with eye contact and a smile.  Besides being good with the press, he addresses his weaknesses and turns them into positives, such as the fact that he started playing basketball in Junior High represents that he still contains a lot of upside.

    And here is part 2.

His favorite player is Scotty Pippen, so poll time! Would you like him to be our Pippen to Tyreke as our Jordan?
