Nice

Glad they won, considering the refs tried to screw ’em again.

So someone with knowledge of the game – can you explain offsides in soccer? I understand the rule in hockey, but it’s clearly different in fútbol.

"Matt Cain's better at this than I've ever been at anything in my life. He's better at this than you'll ever be, at anything. Matt Cain has a gift. He has a gift, and when you acknowledge that, then maybe we will have something to talk about."

by otis29 on Jun 23, 2010 9:37 AM PDT reply actions

well if you are wondering about that offsides call

that disallowed Dempsey’s goal….Dempsey was onside and it was a good goal.

USA = robbedx2

Basically there have to be two defenders behind the recipient of a pass

Usually the goalkeeper is one of those defenders, so basically he can’t be closer to the goal than the last defender at the time the pass is made.

“Closer to the goal” is an inexact way of putting it though, because it’s judged horizontally across the field.

Onside:

    o (passer)

x x o x

     x
_ {____} _

Offside:

    o(passer)

    o

    x
_ {____} __

by otis29 on Jun 23, 2010 9:57 AM PDT up reply actions

Oh - and tie goes to the attacker

If they’re exactly even it’s supposed to be onside, which is why Dempsey’s goal being called back was a bad call.

by nbrans on Jun 23, 2010 9:59 AM PDT up reply actions

That's a little confusing

players on the attacking team must have the ball or a defender (other than the goalie) between them and goal. This is why you’ll see players make long lead passes. They have to pass it in front of their guy.

Honestly, it was a bad call since FIFA’s rules state that attackers should be given the benefit of the doubt. In this case, Dempsey was only offsides for a split second because the ball bounced back off the goalie before it was passed to him. I don’t blame the refs too much because it was pretty close and he had an actual reason to blow the whistle this time, unlike against Slovenia

it's nice to see

soccer finally being followed in the US too…there are few sub-rules regarding the offside:

a. if the recipient of the pass is BEHIND the ball at the moment of the pass, he doesn’t count as if it was in offside even if he has only one defender (or less) in front of him

The recipient of the pass is in offside if he has a part of his body that he may use to score (so hands and arms doesn’t count) beyond the last defender

by Panzerfaust on Jun 23, 2010 12:58 PM PDT up reply actions

That last part is interesting

Because I think Dempsey’s right foot was even with the defender, but a good portion of his body was past

And yeah, I got interested after the 2006 World Cup, then became really interested during last year’s Confederation’s Cup. I’ve started watching some EPL and La Liga games, although they’re still kind of hard to come by.

I think it's like

a cultural difference that is slowly disappearing. If you’re starting to see soccer I suggest you to look more to the Premier League games (the English league), cause they are faster and with less tacticism. With the improving of the US national team I’m confident the interest in this sport (which I love, second only to basketball) will grow steadily.

It’s often very difficult to call an offside, cause the action is fast and it’s often a matter of inches.

by Panzerfaust on Jun 23, 2010 1:25 PM PDT up reply actions

It's more of a time difference thing

EPL games are on super early here. I’ve caught a few on ESPN when I’ve been up early on a Saturday morning with the baby. I’d get to watch more if I subscribed to Fox Soccer Channel, which I’ve refused to do until they offered HD.

I've got a mental hangup with Offsides calls.

Basically there have to be two defenders behind the recipient of a pass

Do there have to be two defenders behind the recipient of a pass when the ball is being kicked to the receipt?

OR

Do there have to be two defenders behind the recipient of a pass when the recipient receives the ball? (I am assuming this is the right answer)

Because technically there can be two defenders behind the recipient of the pass when the ball is kicked to the recipient of the pass but by the time he receives the pass he can then be behind the two defenders.

Please note the 11 next to my name. All others are frauds.

I watched the entire first half before heading to work

And watched the last 5 minutes on ESPN3. I’ve caught enough of the Cup to start to get the nuances of the game, and it’s definitely increasing the entertainment factor.

"Matt Cain's better at this than I've ever been at anything in my life. He's better at this than you'll ever be, at anything. Matt Cain has a gift. He has a gift, and when you acknowledge that, then maybe we will have something to talk about."

Cool.

Looking at the final scores, only leads to the it’s boring factor. The near goals and the near, near goal chances and the preciousness of any goal, adds to the tension. Once you get past the, all that matters is what you can show on SportsCenter stage of interest, it starts to open up.

I’m glad you’re getting some enjoyment out of it.

The win was even sweeter because

it knocked out those dirty Slovenians. And even more sweeter because it probably made Sasha Vujacic cry, which is always a score in my mind.

The SVN team wasn’t particularly dirty. They were just the beneficiary of some awful refereeing.

But I’m glad to see them out, that’s for sure.

You make a good point about Sasha.

Algeria did get a little dirty towards the end

like when Dempsey got punched in the mouth. They showed the replay and their fighting for the ball. The defender looks back at him, sees him, turns his head, and just throws a fist back

but I think it was that same player that got the red card just a couple minutes later.

It’s at 43-42 (on serve). The quality of play is surprisingly high.

Hopefully John Boy can deliver another nice win for the U.S.

Tied at 59 in the fifth. Play suspended due to darkness.

Mahut protested that it was too dark to continue. The officials wanted to play two more games. The crowd chanted “We want more!” over and over. John said afterward that he and Mahut could not agree to continue, so I guess John wanted to keep playing as well.

It was incredibly dark. I think they made the right call.

John and Mahut have 98 and 94 aces each so far. The previous record was 51.

and can’t wait for Saturday, even though I’m still on a high with this win. I don’t know if I can take another near heartbreak followed by pure joy, my heart be fragile yo. ;P

Ghana is going to be tough though, basically the only African team that advanced and they did knock us out of the last WC.

This USA team has all kinds of fight in them though :)
