Carmelo Contract Extension?

If this is true, does it have any effect on Petrie's plans for this season? Was Petrie saving his cap space until 2011 to potentially make a run at 'Melo?

Carmelo was probably the backup plan for NJN not getting LBJ

And, might have been the biggest reason for NOT drafting Johnson. If Carmenlo opted out of his contract, NJ would definitely gone after him big time next season.

Now with LBJ likely to resign with Cleveland and Mello out of the picture, NJ’s options to upgrade the SF spot are go after Gay or sign Johnson. Turner & Wall will be gone. Too many max FA’s at PF so Favors is out. It must be Cousins as trade bait or Johnson.

They need to draft Johnson

There’s a bunch of good free agent bigs looking for money that can be swayed by living in New York and playing for a badass Russian billionaire and Jay-Z. I really picture Amare landing in a Nets uniform. That would actually work out quite well since Lopez can focus on doing all the rebounding and defense that Amare won’t. Harris/Lee/Johnson/Amare/Lopez is a solid starting lineup, especially with Avery Johnson on the bench… assuming he learned from his mistakes in Dallas.
