The Chicago Bulls have a deal in place that would move Kirk Hinrich and the 17th pick to the Washington Wizards, freeing up enough cap space to pursue two maximum-salary players on this summer's free-agent market, sources with knowledge of the Bulls' plans said Thursday. ... According to one source, the Sacramento Kings are prepared to make a similar deal with the Bulls in the Wizards' stead.

Would we just be absorbing Hinrich’s contract?

Rather have Posey I think.

Even though Posey is more expensive. Juju has never panned out and shown that he was worth being taken.

Probably, but that's fine by me

Posey’s cheaper than Hinrich for the same amount. Julian’s got a qualifying offer for next year so he could be an expiring. Plus the pick is higher

Some salary has to go back in a deal like this

I can’t believe anyone would just absorb Heinrich’s salary to take the #17 pick in this draft.

by Tom Ziller on Jun 24, 2010 1:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, exactly

You’d have to really really really really like Kirk Hinrich to do this. I think the FO may have been saved from themselves, unless the reason the Bulls took the WIzards’ offer instead of the Kings is that the Kings tried to make it Cisco for Hinrich/#17.

by nbrans on Jun 24, 2010 1:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Could be the difference in conferences.

But, you think it would be steeper to trade in conference if that was the case. Maybe Wash just loves Hinrich?

to the naysayers....

Find a free-agent that’s not overpaid. Hinrich’s deal isn’t that bad compared to some of the other deals we’ve seen. Hell, look what we paid Cisco and Beno… Ramon Sessions got $17M to ride Minne’s bench.

I would do this deal in a heartbeat. The 17th pick allows us to pick up more young, inexpensive talent. And Hinrich would be an expiring after next year, too.

by misterbrister on Jun 24, 2010 1:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Then don't spend the money

by nbrans on Jun 24, 2010 1:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Think about it this way

Some teams are willing to spend up to $3M to get into the late first round. If we were “willing” to buy the 17th, what would it cost? Subtract that off of Hinrich’s deal, and it’s not as bad….

I realized that this is some non-GAAP, Enron-style accounting, but it allows me to be comfortable with the thought of getting another pick.

Cisco is expendable

Beno less so, but in any case we need to add another solid guard as part of a Tyreke-Beno-? rotation.

I’d rather pick up another pick in the teens and get someone from the Xavier Henry-Avery Bradley-James Anderson pool, but we could do worse than Hinrich.

Add a more experienced SF and we are suddenly a contender for a low playoff spot, and we’re playing games that suddenly mean something more than where we’ll be drafting next season.

that could produce the short term sidekick to Evans in Kirk Hinrich, and then alow us to draft the long term guy in maybe Avery Bradley, or Xavier Henry or Eric Bledsoe or someone like that. Also the Kings weren’t going to make any other big move with their cap space they might as well use this to get another mid 1st draft pick. The issue

We don’t expect the Kings to do much with cap space this summer (see: Dalembert move, adding salary this year), but they have been clearing the books for 2011 (see: trading Noc, Martin). Hinrich doesn’t expire until 2012.

by Tom Ziller on Jun 24, 2010 1:16 PM PDT reply actions

I wouldn't call his a crippling contract though

We’d still only have Beno, Cisco, and Hinrich on contracts that aren’t on the rookie scale or a vet’s minimum (most likely) next summer (I think). Maybe Petrie and the Maloofs have decided that even next summer is too early, rebuilding-wise, to be thinking about having money to sign a big FA. Yes, it’s also about trade flexibility, not just FA signings, but we’d still have quite a bit of flexibility even with Hinrich. And he’d only be on the books for the first year of the new CBA.

There’s been a lot of chatter lately about the Kings wanting to add a veteran. Hinrich would give them a veteran that fills a needed role on the court (3rd guard, defender than can shoot) and he’s only under contract for two more years. That sounds better to me than signing someone for a little bit smaller deal per year for 3-4 years that is maybe not as good of a player, or some token vet that is there for the locker room presence but doesn’t add much on the court. By the time Hinrich’s deal ends (or he’s traded), we won’t have as much a need for a veteran presence, and we’ll have a better idea of what we have on our hands with all of our young guys and can start deciding on who we want to lock-in long term and who we deal with in other ways.

Bottom line, it improves the team and it’s not my money, so I say go for it.

If the Kings made this type of deal

It shows you there is pressure to increase the win total substantially this season.

Let's do this deal

and then trade Cisco and the 5 for the 10.

So now we have Hinrichs, the 10, the 17, the 33 and we’ve only lost 3.5 million of cap space this year, 2.2 million next year and we pick up 6.1 million in the third year.

Then we take Xavier Henry with the 10, Whiteside with the 17 and the BPA at 33.

Lineup:
Tyreke/Beno
Hinrich/Beno/Henry
Donte/Omri/Udoka
JT/Landry/Brockman/Donte
Dally/JT/Whiteside

The only problem is you’d be counting on a lot of improvement from your SFs.

contingency

i wonder if the contingency between us and the Wiz is whether either teams targeted player is still available at 17. Thus, e.g. if the Wiz have Whiteside in mind and he’s there they get the deal, but if he’s not and we have Bradley in mind and he is available, we get the deal? Only other deal like this that I would prefer is Collison/Peja. (NO might want a cheap asset in return).

nope!

well ….. depends on who’d we get with #5 and #17 …. but I didn’t expect them to go get a Joe Johnson or Amare anyway. I’d be fine with it.

Amick:
A league source tells FanHouse the Kings have no interest in the Hinrich/No. 17 deal, and that it’s likely Chicago smokescreen 4 leverage.

Is smokescreen the official word of the 2010 NBA draft?

"For five decades (and counting), these fans have been blessed with West, Baylor, Wilt, Kareem, Magic, Shaq and Kobe. Seven of the 15 best players ever. At some point, the gravy train will end. The Lakers will bottom out like the Knicks did last decade, submarined by bad moves, poor signings and unlucky drafts. Their fans will flee in droves. Jack will pass away. The buzz will be gone. That's how the NBA works -- in a 30-team league, you can't always get lucky, not even if you're a big-market team with deep pockets. I don't know if that day is three years off or 30, but it's coming." Bill Simmons

SMOKESCREEN!

I have nothing of value to contribute. Other than smokescreen has been used quite a lot lately.

Please......

Get this deal done. The wizards already got handed the #1 pick. Hinrich would be perfect here.

Apparently the Wiz would also give the Bulls 3 million.

Jesus, $20 million dollars just for the 17th pick. Wiz should just go try for the #2 by taking Brand.

Looks like its official

The Chicago Bulls have agreed to a deal to send guard Kirk Hinrich and the No. 17 overall pick in Thursday’s draft to the Wizards, an NBA source confirmed. The trade was first reported by ESPN. League rules prohibit the trade from being completed until July 8 and it is unclear what the Wizards, who can absorb Hinrich’s $9 million salary into their available cap space, will send back to Chicago. However, though the Bulls will still pick at No. 17 on Thursday, they will be picking for the Wizards.
