The Kings Rise Again

Sacramento Kings' frontcourt, 2007-08 season:

Brad Miller

Mikki Moore

Spencer Hawes

***

Sacramento Kings' frontcourt, 2010-11 season:

DeMarcus Cousins

Carl Landry

Samuel Dalembert

Jason Thompson

Hassan Whiteside

Jon Brockman

***

I imagine there will be hard times ahead in the development of both DeMarcus and Hassan. The former may need to come off the bench this season, and the latter may need to spend time in Reno with the D-League affiliate. There are no sure things in the NBA.

But holy mackarel, what an upgrade!

That's true

but the odds of the Kings getting DMC at 5 and Whiteside at 33 were much worse than us landing Reke and Omri at 4 and 23. I don’t think there was a Kings fan out there who expected us to land both of those guys.

I'm not fond of Whiteside so I didn't care

Not surprised Whiteside dropped. I see his impact at the NBA level being minimal if he makes it.

Do you think they should have used the pick on a guard instead?

They probably took him

because they had a lot of time invested in him and probably felt he was one of the top 10 players in the draft. Not only that, but at 33 they probably just didn’t feel that strongly about the guards who were in play.

Randle's on the Wiz summer league roster.....so he's probably not going to get a chance to get a contract from the Kings.....

Uh, I’m not sure about who the Kings might get in this area to be honest.

Not too many 2nd rounders have a big impact on the league though. I’m not crazy about Whiteside either and I would’ve hit something if we took him in the 1st round, but he’s a perfect 2nd round pick. Absolutely no risk and a ton of reward if he can develop properly.

I think the Kings need to breathe and reconoitor at this point.

They need to figure out how ths all works with the pieces in place. They have a really good group of guys who get along currently. See how the new kids (and Sammy) fit before dashing ahead.
The VSL will have some prospects to add. The Kings have some money in the bank and the Feb trade deadline before the CBA comes crashing down (possible lock out). No need to add another veteran presence at the 2 just yet. Better to be ready when opportunity knocks.

Yeah, I could see them maybe signing an undrafted guard from the VSL team

but not spending on any veteran FA’s and just rolling with it. A 3 guard rotation of ’Reke, Beno, and Cisco, with a young guard soaking up any extra minutes sounds just fine to me for this year. The trade and the draft are excitement enough for this summer, no need to spend money just to spend it. After this year, Petrie can start to tighten his death grip on the throat of the league.

Stay flexible with salary.

If they want to acquire a higher priced person it should be with one year left on their contract. That way it doesn’t tie up too much and limit options. Staying flexible and being able to make moves closer to being able to push for a championship is going to be key.

He qualifies in all on-court regards (all world defender, excellent shooter), off-court regards (veteran presence, loads of experience and advice, well regarded around the league), and on the financial books ($7m expiring contract). Only problem is that Houston knows all these things and values all these things themselves.

What about Jon Scheyer?

He went undrafted, he can handle decently, he can shoot, and his size isn’t terrible. I’d guess that our long-term solution for another good guard will likely come from next year’s draft, so how about a relatively cheap rookie who knows the game well for this year? I’d be interested in signing him to a cheap one-year deal with the second year a team option.

I very happy we got him but, from watching the pre-draft workout tape, he’s got a ton of learning to do. Showed a very low basketball IQ in letting a guy go right around him for an easy layup. He should spend a year adding more tools and developing mentally for the NBA game, all the physical tools are there.

Hopefully Brockman is around for at least one more year to fill in during times of need. Should set a good example for Cousins/Whiteside too.

by abasketballfan on Jun 24, 2010 11:57 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't like this idea anymore.

I think Whiteside needs practice against NBA bodies and NBA talent. He’ll get a hell of a lot of fouls, but thats’ something we can deal with with all our depth. More importantly, I’m picturing Cousins and Whiteside practicing together with the assistant coaches, helping each other out. Cousins is the perfect specimen to challenge Whiteside because of Cousins’ strength and talent. Whiteside is the perfect specimen to challenge Cousins because of his length and mobility.

There's still summer league and training camp

That should get him enough practice but he needs game minutes too. Actually I like the idea of Brockman heading down with him for stretches, it would provide a good mentor. Everyone’s been saying that Whiteside needs to develop a stronger mentality. Life down in the D League should do that too.

Dalembert provides the length and mobility to challenge Cousins.

There's an experience big by the name of Dalembert,

who’ll be around for at least 1 year, that might pose an interesting chalenge during practice.

Kings made a bad pick choosing Cousins, even though he could end up being great.

I guess I will just have to find a way to be patient and wait for some analysis to be released from legitimate knowledgeable sources. I can’t take this quickie news crap.

Whiteside falling is a bit of luck, but who cares?

PW is not afraid to rotate players a lot, so I hope Whiteside will get enough time to develop and show a bit of his stuff. There was an articvle about him in SI, and they interveiwed Olajuwan (who trained Whiteside) and Hakeem said that it is a mistake to send someone like Whiteside (or Thabeet) to the development league. I’ll see if I can still find the article and link it.

I think he brings alot more to the table than JT

He is obviously a better shot blocker (which the team needed before Sammy), plays above the rim better than JT, offensively not far behind anywhere, and rebounding is not far behind either. I think the defense gives him the slight edge on JT.

Adding talent to your roster has to make everyone smile. Reke has to be ecstatic.
Getting SammyD and losing Noce has to have Omri and Donté stoked along with the addition of DMC and Hassan Whiteside. They have to recognize the team will win more games and compete better next season. That must feel good.

Listened to the Petrie presser

Petrie said in the post-draft press conference that Cousins was the best center in the draft, “an exceptional talent with great size and skill,” and praised his footwork, low post feel and passing ability out of double teams. He addressed the character issues, saying they had spent as much time researching Cousins as any prospect ever and had talked to people going back to junior high and were satisfied that there are no significant issues.

He said Whiteside was a four and that he’s a great athlete and shotblocker and good shooter that would need time to develop and that the Kings look forward to working with him. Petrie said adding both players continues the team’s quest over the past several years to improve the team’s front court play.

Petrie was asked about the playing time up front and said that while that’s Westphal’s area, that Dalembert had averaged 26 minutes a game for his career and that Cousins played 23 minutes a game last year, so there’s the 48 minutes at the center position.

It’s looking like JT is potentially the odd man out in terms of playing time, because Landry will get 30 plus for sure. But they still have to play the games, so we’ll see what shakes out. It would not surprise me, though, to see JT dealt at some point. In the meantime, if your frontline is strong enough that JT has trouble playing 20 minutes a game, you’re probably set up pretty well there.

Regarding other players, Petrie said the team would at the very least be looking to add a PG and SG to the roster.

"I know we certainly gave up a lot to get him, but we do have other players on the perimeter who we can plug in. We haven’t had anybody who we feel is a go-to guy in the post. So we gave up a lot to get a lot, and we’re real excited about adding Carl." - Paul Westphal

by NewEraKings on Jun 25, 2010 12:26 AM PDT reply actions   1 recs

I really doubt JT gets dealt because both Sammy and Landry are FAs after this season

It’d make more sense to just ask each guy to tolerate the lower than usual minutes, even if they may upset about this over one season, and then see how the FA works shake out.

After having to play Kenny Thomas last season

I think Westphal is going to be able handle the sudden problem of finding playing time for a talented front line.

"I know we certainly gave up a lot to get him, but we do have other players on the perimeter who we can plug in. We haven’t had anybody who we feel is a go-to guy in the post. So we gave up a lot to get a lot, and we’re real excited about adding Carl." - Paul Westphal

Right now only Sammy Carl JT & DMC are going to be the frontcourt getting minutes

I’ll be shocked if Whiteside gets any and I’ll be shocked if Nessie gets more than a few here or there.

Brock was at the draft party and spoke about being here next year.

Also, if you analyze the thinking on drafting Cousins, it was suggested that Kings brass think Cousins and JT are a good frontcourt for the future, so I don’t think JT will be the odd man out and I certainly don’t see him being dealt unless it is for a really good player in return that helps the team by a large margin.

I'd rather have JT than Cousins if i had to pick.

Just because JT rebounds so well and plays much better D and is bigger.

Landry’s scoring does not make up for his deficiencies IMO. I like him off the bench ultimately, even though him and Dali are a great duo.

by caseycheesecake on Jun 25, 2010 8:28 AM PDT up reply actions

Landry is your best scoring big by a long shot

and Dalembert’s D and rebounding is a great complement to Landry. Those are your starters. Then we bring on the beef.

"I know we certainly gave up a lot to get him, but we do have other players on the perimeter who we can plug in. We haven’t had anybody who we feel is a go-to guy in the post. So we gave up a lot to get a lot, and we’re real excited about adding Carl." - Paul Westphal

i agree

I think to start the season you go with Daly, Landry, Greene, Beno and Evans to start season.

LaMarcus Aldridge is the most over rated and over paid player in NBA. Tyreke Evans will be better than Brandon Roy this year.

I think Cisco could and probably should start at the 3

depending on the moves Petrie makes to address the PG and SG needs.

What’s going to be interesting to see is whose Westphal’s closers are.

I think Omri should start at the 3

More “polished” than Donte and more skilled than Cisco

by Shizzo on Jun 25, 2010 4:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Cisco has more experience

and has shown he can make the big shot.

Casspi’s production tapered off in the second half last season, and he started to look lost on the court. Probably thinking too much instead of playing.

If Cisco is healthy, I believe he’ll play a lot and certainly more than most here expect.

True scoop

Unless one of those four gets hurt.

Does Landry have the ability to play the 3? I think it would be a stretch, but there are some folks who seem to think he can play there on occasion.

There is no way the Kings will

sacrifice the minutes of Donte & Omri to make minutes for bigs….not a chance.

My conclusion: All the experts and GM’s are doing a lot of guessing from their A$$es. Well I’m sitting on mine right now about to do the same, so excuse me if I pause occasionally to lift a cheek to check for any obvious emanations of genius.

If Petrie is willing to sacrifice JT's minutes

He and Westphal will certainly be willing to sacrifice the minutes of any other player on the roster who doesn’t perform, development be damned.

As it shapes up now, Garcia will probably be the one to take some of Donte and Omri’s minutes away.

I don't see that.

Garcia will be playing the 2.

I’m expecting a breakout year from Donte. Everyone is up on Omri (so am I), but I have always liked Donte….back when I didn’t like the coaches.

Anyway, I just don’t see Greene OR Casspi ALLOWING Garcia to take their minutes away.

Well when Landry plays those 5-10 spot minutes at SF when matchups allow

Omri/Donte could play 5-10 spot minutes at SG when matchups allow. That way our gap at SG is filled while giving our stable of bigs their needed minutes

Screw you Knicks! LBJ to the Kings!!!

That could work

Actually, since Landry excelled coming off the bench at Houston

maybe that would be the best way to play him… JT plays most (like 8-10 mins) of 3 quarters, and go all Landry in the fourth.

This.

Most underrated draft story IMO

Solomon Alabi’s Hepatitis B drops him to the 50th pick according to draftexpress. He says he’ll be fine though..

by sdfd on Jun 25, 2010 1:01 AM PDT reply actions

hes awful big

not to go in the first round due to Hep B. something else has to be up. plus hes really really smart. i do agree that he is underrated. but we will see what happens with him

if you play defense the fans will come

Love this from PW.
On adding these two players to the roster:
"It changes our team quite a bit. We went from a team that really scrapped to hold our own on the boards, to a big team. I think that adding size has been very important when we look at the teams we have to compete against in the West. Portland and the Lakers in particular, and you can go down the list. We were giving up size every game, and we have got some answers to size now that we can try out with these guys. It’s really nice."

Thinking about other teams being intimidated to go against our front court is something that will take a little bit of time to set in.

Good work fellas.

Roster balance is such a beautiful thing. Being in the position to draft the most talented prospect who also fills a need is pretty neat.

I’m so excited about the Blazers and/or Kings eventually destroying the Lakers over the next couple years. Keep up the good work.

Wow

after this draft declare yourselves playoff bound and challenging the Lakers for the West

Atlanta will win a championship....someday

Agreed, Kfan

The team, post draft, will need to mature together, and PW will get it all sorted out. The Kings will most likely not make the playoffs this year, but will challenge everyone in every game. Look ahead to May 2012 as the full-blossom time.
