Who's Missing......

We've been rebuilding for a while now, and the roster is almost completely rebuilt.  We came away with arguably the best player in this past draft.  But right after all the excitement stopped, everyone noticed that we still may have one weak link on our team. Now that we could potentially put forth one of the more dominant front-courts in the league, our back-court looks incomplete.  So who's gonna fill the spot.

Roster-

Beno
Reke/Garcia
Greene/Casspi
JT/Landry/Whiteside/Brockman
Cousins/Dalembert

Prospects- A 5th guard could come from summer league.

Free Agents- Most likely to want to come to Sacramento.

JJ Reddick(RFA), Anthony Morrow(RFA), Wes Mathews(RFA), Steve Blake, John Salmons, Raymond Felton

Trade- Can be had for not much in return.

Rudy Fernandez, Mo Williams, Michael Redd, Wilson Chandler

I would love Michael Redd

However his contract is the prime example of being overpaid in this league
And he cant stay on the floor, he gets injured way too much

Redd’s contract pays him about 35 mill over the next 2 years.

If he were to stay healthy and had a better contract, I would go after him in a heartbeat….However, that is not the case

A note on Redd

I’ve watched his production decline over the years, and I would say he’s a good player on a bad team, nothing more. He’s not really a team player, always has disrupted chemistry, etc. But a new situation could be good for him. I don’t expect him to play for the Bucks again.

I like him a lot, but he isn’t a SG in my eyes, so gotta say no.

Though I have read a lot of the same post, this one at least includes some realistic players and isn’t just about getting Ray Allen.

Hinrich has not been officially traded.

And, the Kings could trade for Hinrich as long as Hinrich is the only guy being traded. That is, if either team is over the salary cap which neither the Wiz or Kings will be come July 1.

Personally

I’d love if the Kings were to add G Anthony Morrow and G Nate Robinson and an undrafted combo G from the Summer League team. They desperately need outside shooting and Morrow is one of the best in the league. Plus he’s not a bad defender when you look at his synergy stats (one of the best on that defensively deficient GSW team).

by Devastation Co. MMA on Jun 25, 2010 7:30 PM PDT reply actions

Pick 2 from between Morrow, Nate and Blake

and also sign a cheap, hungry free agent from Summer League.

Felton is also possible.

I voted Fernandez, but I don’t think the Blazers will part with him.

Like Gordon Gekko said, it’s all about the bucks and I don’t want the Kings offering any more MLEs and five-year deals for role players.

"I know we certainly gave up a lot to get him, but we do have other players on the perimeter who we can plug in. We haven’t had anybody who we feel is a go-to guy in the post. So we gave up a lot to get a lot, and we’re real excited about adding Carl." - Paul Westphal

Let’s either get a long-term starter-level player, or a cheap role player. Avoid MLEs in 2010.

Me three

I really dislike this idea that the Kings need a shooter just to have a shooter. it takes a very particular player to pair alongside Tyreke, and I don’t think a one-dimensional shooter like Anthony Morrow is necessarily that guy. In fact I don’t think “that guy” is necessarily available in this free agency period.

I should fanpost this at some point, but Ideally the guard you pair with Tyreke would be:

a) Better Beno – secondary playmaker, outsider shooter, able to pass decently to good, hopefully better defender.

b) Eric Snow/Ron Harper/Derek Fisher type – primary ballhandler and hard-nosed defender, able to knock down jumpers but mostly defensive specialist

c) Doug Christie – 2 guard who can handle like a point, ace defender, able to help a little on offense (Garcia could potentially fill this role)

Tyreke can play point guard, but he can’t play point guard all by himself. He needs an outlet, someone who can handle the ball for stretches so he doesn’t have to exert his energy getting the ball up the floor. Ideally the guard paired with him would be able to do more than just shoot – you need a ballhandler on the floor with him, especially when Casspi and Greene are at SF.

But again – the problem with this free agency is that there aren’t many/any guys who meet these descriptions. It will be interesting to see what Geoff decides to do. Might be better-served acquiring through trade-for-capspace than in free agency.

I still think the ideal is Joe Johnson

Someone who can play point shooting guard along with Tyreke as well as shoot from outside for a huge backcourt. Just a perfect second banana. But I know there are some good reasons against trying to sign him to a huge deal before the new CBA.

For young guys, Collison could be the playmaking/defending combo guard better-Beno type, Shannon Brown could be an uber-athletic Ron Harper type, OJ Mayo could be a Doug Christie type. It would probably take a lot to get those guys though.

It will be interesting to see what Petrie decides to do.

by nbrans on Jun 26, 2010 1:31 AM PDT up reply actions

Not sure Collison will be on the block after New Orleans just barely is under the tax. Or if he is, it will cost a lot to get him most likely.

However, I do like Collison and think he could add something to the table. Shannon Brown isn’t a great shooter but he is a great athlete. I’m not sure I’d really be in love with him here. OJ Mayo = Doug Christie? Not nearly athletic enough sir.

Not sure I agree

Collison could be off the block if the Kings were willing to absorb some salary (say Peja and Collison for Garcia, which nets NO major cap savings), or something along those lines. Collison/Tyreke would give backcourts fits with their quickness.

You’re right about Brown’s shooting, which is why I had him in the Ron Harper/Eric Snow category. At the time when those guys were most effective it was before the handchecking rules, so they were able to bother PGs just by being bigger and stronger than the PGs they were going up against. Now it’s quickness that’s at a premium with the new way the rules are called, and Brown could be a defensive ace to pair with Tyreke, handling the ball some and taking the tougher defensive assignment on the other end.

Mayo isn’t an elite athlete but he’s pretty good, and he has been a better defender than I think anyone anticipated.

Another player that’s a possibility, especially with the Nets looking to cut salary, is Courtney Lee for the Doug Christie mold. Really good defender and outside shooter, but unfortunately not the ballhandler.

Joe Johnson? Absolutely not.

He then becomes the best player on the team. It is no longer Tyreke’s team it is JoJo’s team. This makes no sense to me at all. Did I mention that he is looking for a long term max contract?

The Tyreke of April 2010 will not be the Tyreke of Nov 2010. He will get better, smarter and more skilled. Same goes for Donté, JT, Omri and even Brockman. This is a large change to the team with all the bigs and the main focus on defense with Sammy who will be in low post on offense. I don’t think the Kings can determine in June what is best for this team come November, except that the playoffs would be a stretch.

Disagree

If you think Tyreke is going to be Kobe Bryant and you can just surround him with a few solid players and we can start fitting everyone for championship rings, I’ll heartily disagree. I love Reke as much as the next guy, but he ain’t a superstar yet.

There’s virtually no chance JJ would come here, but as an exercise in theoretical team building? To assume it wouldn’t work is crazy talk. Joe Johnson the basketball player would fit this team to a T.

And remember,

we probably still have another year in the late lottery. Someone with the potential to fill this role might be available for much cheaper than any of these guys.

Good, solid thoughts.

by twasserm on Jun 26, 2010 6:12 AM PDT up reply actions

I agree, your not going to find that type of player in Free Agency unless your willing to pay big time.

That’s why I think, that for now the 2 depth chart should be Cisco, Beno, Rookie with potential to be the player you discribed.

Evans can and does play the SG, and when he does having another PG who can actually set up our bigs and set up plays for Evans and the wings would be the biggest improvement this year.

If you have a veteran playmaker, there is more than enough talent to play the 2 already on the team. I’d be looking at signing a vet UFA to play the PG. Guys like Ridnour, Blake, Felton and Duhon.

Blake is one of the oldest at 30 but the cheapest after making $4M last year. He shoots almost 40% from threes and averaged 1.6 to’s in 27mpg.

Ridnour is a little younger at 29 but made $6.5M last year. He had the lowest to’s per game at 1.29 but played the lowest mpg at 21.5. But he had the best shooting percentage from the field at .478 and .381 from threes.

Duhon is younger and make over $6M, but doesn’t shoot as well as the other 2 and has played over 30mpg.

Felton is the youngest, and the best shooter and defender, but is probably going to get the most money & longest contract. So, if the Kings plan to move Evans to the 2 full time this is probably the guy to go after.

If this a immediate impact but short term move, I’d probably go Blake or Ridnour with a 3yr deal and team option in the 3rd year.

with the CBA looming and no Arena deal in place, attendence a problem

A 3 year deal is like dog years for this team and will seem like 5. The Kings will have some difficult financial decisions to make in three years, maybe having a veteran you plan on keeping and expiring is as smart move as waiting and figuring it out as the season progresses but I am still in favor of spending min money at this point.

Wisdom of the Day: Eric Maynor has already been on two NBA rosters in his rookie year and was close to traded on draft day for what would have been his third team. The Law of Averages has him ending up on the Kings within the next 10 years.

by betweentheeyes on Jun 26, 2010 2:27 PM PDT up reply actions

You can't afford to go with a PG that's going to turnover the ball.

And, even a lottery PG is going to do that. We haven’t had anyone who can set up other player and especially the bigs since we traded Sergio.

A veteran PG that’s worth anything is going to command at least a 3yr contract and maybe longer. Blake and Ridnour are old enough that they would probably settle for a 3 year deal with a team option. Out of the group I mentioned only Blake made less than $6M last year. If your looking for someone who can help the team this year your going to have to pay. But, a three year deal for $3-4M+ a year isn’t going to kill the cap space. Now, Felton is going to be looking for a long term contract with starters money, so I don’t see him getting the deal he wants from the Kings, but who knows what GP’s thinking.

The Arena deal will happen or it won’t, and what FA’s we pick up won’t impact that what so ever. Attendence will be affected by the economy and whoever we add that makes this team, exciting again. And, a PG who can set up Evan and Cousins for thrilling finishes at the rim will be worth every penny we give them.

The CBA’s biggest impact will be if it forces a lockout next year. It’s going to change the percentages of the Basketball Income that’s used to determine the salary cap but if the economy improves the cap will still go up. And it may change the max length of contracts and guaranteed money but don’t expect it to create a cap that’s going to hurt the teams or the players. Both sides depend on the success of the NBA to provide their living, and no one Kills the Golden Goose.

I like the idea of a veteran PG in theory but not as much in practice

I’m not sure what Steve Blake or Ridnour bring that Beno doesn’t already, except that perhaps Blake is a better defender. I feel like the PG that comes in should provide a different look than what Beno offers, which is why if they’re going to bring a PG I’d be more in favor of someone like Felton, who is really quick, or (god help me) Nate Robinson, who can come in for instant offense.

Just really not excited or interested in Blake or Ridnour.

by nbrans on Jun 26, 2010 4:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Felton would be my choice also, if the Kings made him the starter and moved Evans to the 2

And, I didn’t pick Blake or Ridnour as the future, only a solid ball handler that’s going to hit the 3’s and not turnover the ball.

Before we go spending our cap space on the lineup of the future, I think we need to see where Evans is going with his game. If he perfects his outside shot then we can look for the starting PG/SG of the Future. Until then it wouldn’t hurt to have another Beno around especially at half the cost.

I’m only looking for a solid backup PG, for the short term, 1-3 years. Then when we know where Evans fits best we can fill the final piece. So, solid PG ballhandler and backup SG with potential, all for under the cost of the MLE is what I’d prescribe. Spend the real money after we show we have the stuff to get deep into the playoffs.
