It's Official: Holmdel Drinks Kool-Aid, Sees Multiple Titles

It is true.  I have drunk deep from the Kool-Aid, and here is what I see:  DeMarcus Cousins as the most offensively gifted big man to enter the League since Shaq.  A guy who can average 26 ppg and 11.5 rpg.  Coupled with Tyreke, who can average 28 ppg and surely figure out how to throw an entry pass to the big man.  The two will be the best inside-out combination in the League.

In fact, these guys look so promising together that I can't help but think they knew it all along, and have been laughing to themselves about how DMC was going to fall to #5, was never going to go to Minnie, and was going to team up with 'Reke.  In 'Reke, you've got a guy who just went through a long, tough season; who knows what he needs down low; and who can talk candidly about DMC with Calipari, get the scoop on how the guy really is, what his potential is, what his work ethic is like, etc.  And 'Reke never had a reservation about wanting DMC on his team.  I think that speaks volumes.  This guy isn't Big Country Reeves and he isn't Sean May.  He is going to come in and kick some butt.

The Kool-Aid's final point to me was that we really just need to sit tight, keep things stable, develop a structure on offense to make the most of DMC, forget about more trades, more tweaks, more changes.  Just let these guys play with each other, get stronger, and get better.  The future is bright.

All I know is

Tyreke Cousins Landry will be better than Roy Oden Aldridge and that combo wins 104 games in two yrs( you can substitute Joel and Camby for Oden)

LaMarcus Aldridge is the most over rated and over paid player in NBA. Tyreke Evans will be better than Brandon Roy this year.

If Oden stays healthy

No way. At best it ends up being a wash and it comes down to who has the better supporting cast. Having watched a healthy oden dominate centers when he’s not even the feature of their offense and got 5-7 iso sets a game Its scary to think how dominant he would be if Portland actually used him. I look forward to watching the epic battles in the west between Portland, zombie-sonics, and us.

by Merickel on Jun 26, 2010 4:38 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

um no

Oden didn’t even dominate in college. I watched almost every Blazer game this year and Oden didn’t come close to dominating. He avg 11 and 8 when he was healthy and was a big reason blazers struggled early because even tho he has no offensive skills they were trying in vain to feed him and he absolutely clogged the paint and stopped ball movement. Team played much better with Joel, the old man river (Juwan Howard) then really well with Camby. Best case for Oden if he stays healthy is Theo Ratliff in prime. And remember ratliff was great defender and shot blocker. But Oden will never be a good offensive player and while one day may dominate defensively hasn’t done anything close to dominating at this point. Cousins has so much more upside its not even funny. I fully expect him to put up better numbers than Oden for day one.

by KingsFanInPortland on Jun 26, 2010 4:54 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

Not sure what blazers games you were watching. They would establish oden early in the game and would dominate, then as the game went on, like clock work, they would stop giving it to him and would, in turn, stop making the other team double oden who is a good passer out of the post and the offense would stall and turn into a Roy iso set or a last second 3 by Rudy/batum/Webster/Blake. When miller would work with oden they were a far superior team early in the season. Your comparison is far under estimating odens potential on the offensive end and if he can ever stay healthy he will strongly prove you wrong. I do agree cousins has a higher upside on offense but he is not as good defensively or at rebounding as Greg, and that’s what wins series and championships.

by Merickel on Jun 26, 2010 5:09 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

wow dude.

I watched or went to almost every game. You will not find one, not one Blazer fan who will make the claim he dominated. From radio shows to newspaper columnists its taken as a given fact he has no offensive game but putbacks and hindered ballmovement. His defense looked promoising and he was blocking shots at a good clip to to say he has an offensive game or “dominated” isn’t even close to the truth.

What?

Trading Omri for Batum? Seriously? Based on what?

It can’t be numbers, because Omri’s numbers in his first season are way better than Batum’s and pretty close to Batum’s number in his second season.

So then what? Are we heading into the murky waters of “upside” and “intangibles”?

Dunking Dutchman

by RikSmits on Jun 28, 2010 1:12 AM PDT up reply actions

It's that Batum is better as an athlete, and defense. This is something this team needs.

He’s versatile, and score in a few ways. Omri’s emotional, and last season showed Omri in a very positive light until he tripped the life fantastic for 2 1/2 months.

The fact is, Batum is a better player. That’s all there is to it. Maybe Omri improves, but I don’t know. Batum plays on a slower pace team (which effects his numbers all kinds of ways) and is the superior defender. That’s all I can say to answer that Rik.

I respectfully disagree
The fact is, Batum is a better player.

That is not a fact, but an assumption on your side. Stats are facts. They may not take everything into account, but they are facts. Factually, Omri had just as good or a better rookie year than Batum in many categories, especially scoring and rebounding.

About facts:

until he tripped the life fantastic for 2 1/2 months
Check the game logs before you exaggerate grossly. Omri really only hit the wall on February 21, at Phoenix. And he seemed back on track at the March 28 game at Cleveland, but got hit by a virus after that. And even if you take his slump until the end f the season, April 13, it is 1 1/2 months tops.

Defense? I’m still waiting for Ziller’s next posts on defense, where Omri apparently was statistically the best, according to Synergy. And he didn’t benefit from being part of decent team defense, like Batum had. It is way too early to call Batum a better defender.

Batum may indeed be the better athlete, so what? This is basketball, not athletics. Carl Lewis was also a better athlete than Omri, and what does that say?

Being the better athlete does not make Batum the better player yet.

I say yet, because he may turn out to be. (For the record, I like Batum.) But at this point, the factual indications give Omri the edge.

No way I would trade him for Batum straight up.

by RikSmits on Jun 28, 2010 4:56 AM PDT up reply actions

Well

Here is Omri’s stats at B-Ref. Batum’s. You be the judge. I think Batum is better because he disrupts offensive players when healthy. Health matters here. If Batum isn’t healthy? Then Omri’s better because he hasn’t shown to be injury prone yet.

There’s the fact Batum played on a better team with better players than Omri did last year. There’s the fact that Portland is a much slower team than Sacramento which hurts Batum in both pts and reb’s. There’s the fact that Omri burned himself out his rookie year. Batum hasn’t ever done that. He just didn’t get the type of minutes Omri got because of the players ahead of him. That’s okay. It happens.

Either way, it’s an interesting conversation, but I’ll take Batum because he interrupts offensive players right now and can do so against 3 differnet positions. Not a lot of guys in the L can do that Rik.

It's funny that in one argument

you claim that good players earn minutes, and in another argument you defend the players you like because they play less minutes than others because of so-called better players in front of them. If he’s so multifunctional, he should have been able to log in more minutes at more positions.

Fact is, in their first season, Casspi’s stats were superior to Batum’s. If you see Batum’s improvement in his second year, you could argue that Casspi can improve a lot in his second year as well.

Casspi can defend three positions as well, and you have Greene who arguably can guard four positions.

Im a big fan of Omri

But having watched both teams Batum is more consistant, a great defender, prob a better shooter, and a good slasher and athlete, although on that good team hus number isn’t called as much. Him and Roy are considered only untouchables. Rumor here was that Minny offered fourth pick for him and Portland declined. That said I’m very curious to see what Omri and Donte bring this year. Seems that blazers edge is pretty high on him if he can stay healthy

http://www.blazersedge.com/2010/6/15/1520456/blazersedge-mailbag-june-16th-2010

Dave, a VERY respected writer on blazersedge doesn’t dispute the opinion that GO could be very dominant if he stays healthy. You can try and disqualify my argument through absolute statements left and right and try and say you know all about blazers basketball but the fact remains that Oden is talented and COULD be very dominant IF he can stay healthy. You were trying to say that an undersized pf, a sophomore this year that doesn’t exactly have a great shot, and someone who hasn’t played one second of NBA basketball and has some questions about his character (well founded or not) would be better than a proven trio when healthy. I’m as excited about our team as the next guy but this is an irrational satement.

Lol.

So you are changing your arguement cause your so wrong. I said GO could be like Theo Ratliff, who dominated defensively for a few years. GO has no offensive game. Second you said GO has dominated when clearly that’s retarded. The evidence you have is a fan writer who doesn’t dispute the notion GO. – could- dominate – if – he stays healthy. An opinion. As I stated factually GO hasn’t dominated and nobody in Portland would agree with your statement that he has. So you changed your arguement to finding a guy who speculates that if certain factors happen he possibly could dominate. Which is still far from your ridiculous claim that GO has dominated, which after reading twice to see if you were serious was good for a chuckle. And though we have no way of finding out, I’d bet a lot of money that Blazers would do trade for a talented player over an extremely injury prone player who hasn’t even looked liker a number one pick when he was on the floor and is considered a bust (although because of injury mostly) by more people I talk to and hear on radio than someone who will ever be dominant. Very few people expect that anymore.

LaMarcus Aldridge is the most over rated and over paid player in NBA. Tyreke Evans will be better than Brandon Roy this year.

Calm down, everybody.

This tandem’s going to be a little less Shaq-Kobe 2000 and a little more Ron Harper 2001 + Shaq 2010.
