The Sacramento Kings were resurrected last season by hope in the form of reigning Rookie of the Year Tyreke Evans. With his historic rookie campaign and his remarkable 20-5-5 production Sacramento found a franchise cornerstone in this young man. Moving towards the future, the Kings and Coach Paul Westphal have made it clear that future development will be spearheaded with Tyreke at the forefront. Collecting pieces to build a winning team will involve how to best utilize and advance this exciting talent.
Enter DeMarcus Cousins. Big, long, skilled with impressively quick footwork and soft vacuum-like hands, the enigmatic DMC is projected to be a 20/10 guy. This last 2009-10 season only 3 players were able to accomplish that feat (Z-Bo, DLee, CBosh). I doubt this will happen next season, but it is not an unrealistic projection. Is the world of the Sacramento Kings realigning or is this heresy?
Tyreke is expected to have the ball in his hands most of time – he is a ball dominant player, much like the upper echelon stars in the League (LeBron, Dwade, Joe Johnson, DRose, BRoy, etc). He will initiate the offense. But if you have a player who is able to dominate the game with his offense and rebounding as we hope and project DeMarcus Cousins to do, does the dynamic of the team change? Has the focus of the Sacramento Kings shifted? Will the Kings become a low post dominant team (much as they were in the early 2000s)?
The point of play is to win games and to win a championship. As a team oriented sport more than one player is needed to beat the other team(s). Ask LeBron, DWade and the rest of the ball dominant guys in the Association. Therefore, the Kings are not Tyreke’s team anymore than the Spurs are Tim Duncan’s team or the Lakers are Kobe Bryants’ team. But rather than building around one guy, are the Kings now (hopefully) in the position to build around two guys. It's obvious that two cornerstones are better than one. Let's all dance the Blueprint Boogie.
Does this seem like a foreseeable future? Is future chemistry predicated on who will mesh with each of Coach Cal’s basketball progeny? Am I just as "drunk" as Holmdel?
