Kings Add Texas A&M Point Guard Donald Sloan to VSL Team
Undrafted Texas A&M point guard Donald Sloan will join the Kings' Vegas Summer League team, according to KBTX-TV in College Station, Texas.
Sloan averaged 17.8 points and 2.3 assists as a senior at A&M. The Aggies went 24-10, and finished the season No. 25 in the nation. They were knocked out of the NCAA Tournament in the second round.
Sloan was No. 98 on Jay Bilas' best available list. Neither DraftExpress nor Chad Ford listed him as a potential NBA prospect. Sloan is a real longshot to receive consideration for the Kings.
Here's the updated VSL depth chart:
Donald Sloan
Sylven Landesberg / Dionte Christmas / Ryan Thompson
Donté Greene / Omri Casspi
Jason Thompson / Jon Brockman / Wayne Chism
DeMarcus Cousins / Hassan Whiteside

I read
Sherron Collins will play for the Bobcats in the Summer League…any news on where Villanova’s Scottie Reynolds is going to play?

Really don't like Reynolds.
Not NBA caliber in my opinion

most of the guys
who gets the invitation are not NBA caliber in my opinion….I would give Reynolds a shot since he was a good handler and shooter and the face of his team for years

Yeah, give Reynolds a look
He was first team all-american, face of his team, and most of the time was a cold-blooded shooter. He’s seems a little slow footed and has small hands I think but as a third option PG, I think you could do worse.

According to Hollinger (H/T to Ziller for mentioning this to me)
Landesberg was ranked number ELEVEN in Hollinger’s Draft Rater. Landing him looks like it could be a good get.

I don't know much about Landesberg though
Could someone who has actually watched him play (nbrans?) lay out your thoughts?
Grandmaster of the "Never let AnotherStupidSN forget what a Sham-Wow is" Order and Originator of the "Brock Ness Monster".
Unfortunately only saw one Landesberg game
He was suspended at the end of the year for academic reasons. But i think he’s an intriguing possibility. He has good size, good but not great athleticism, good outside shooter, and he’s a crafty scorer. The red flags might have thrown some teams off.
I think he’s actually somewhat similar to Dionte Christmas, though Christmas is a bit more of an outside gunner and Landewberg a bit more of an al-around scoring threat. I like both of these guys. Sometimes it seems like teams do their drafting based solely on the NCAA tournament, but the Kings have proven really good at finding the gems on bad and mid major teams.
They've also shown
they are not afraid of character red flags unless they feel the guy in an uncontrollable cancer. For whatever reason a lot of red flags seem to get overblown around the draft.
Oh and TZ
You forgot Dionte Christmas, at least according to the last thread.

He should, especially after the crap Spencer took, for not playing last year.

sloan
is a solid player. about 6’3, does everything well, but nothing great. gave collison some problems a few years ago in the tournament. underrated.
"When talent is roughly equal," said Westphal, "the competitive guys win. You have to have that in this league. Here's a perfect example: We (the Phoenix Suns) drafted Tim Perry and Dan Majerle the same year (1988). Now, if you get a stopwatch for down and back (baseline to baseline sprint), Tim Perry was faster than Dan Majerle. That's a fact. But if you had them race, Dan Majerle won. I can't explain it. Somehow, he had that drive, that fire, something inside him. If you have enough guys like that, your team starts winning again."
The Kings had him in pre-draft for a workout apparently.
Here is a short interview withe the local sports station from 6/16 if anyone’s interested.

Are there any defensive PGs
who could help fill out the Vegas roster for the Kings to get a look at? Anyone have thoughts on Jeremey Lin? Are there any other pass first PGs to pair with Tyreke?
Don't need a defensive PG in summer league
Just one that can get the ball down low to our new twin towers.
I want to see player getting into the paint, and go up against Cousins and Whiteside. This is there first test, and we need to see what we really have.
It’s 99% sure that whoever plays for us in VSL at the Point, won’t be the player we sign. If we do sign a undrafted player out of the VSL, it will more than likely be someone from one of the other teams, just based on percentages alone.

Agree here
Unless we got Torrance or Collins, but mostly believe we’ll get a veteran PG like Blake for the regular season. Right now all we need is someone to pass to our bigs and wings and hit the many wide open 3s we’ll get.
What we are picking up Sloan but not
jon scheyer? I think Jon Scheyer could be the next Beno! He’s about 6’ 6; Can play the 1 or the 2, can hit the 3 and is a team first kinda guy! At least give this kid a chance…
I'm not thrilled by the prospect
but he is a very good spot up shooter with good passing. A player like him could have a role in the NBA. A taller JJ Redick.
going to watch
Is anyone going to watch any Vegas Summer League games in person this July? I’m planning to go this time around, and would appreciate any helpful advice. For instance, can I bring a camera or do they not allow any photography?
put me in, Coach
Here are ESPN Chad Ford's PG and SG best prospects
Some of the interesting names: Elijah Milsap (younger brother of the Jazz’s Paul), Aubrey Coleman out of Houston and Alexy Shved. On the PG side, Matt Bouldon out of Gonzaga is interesting and seems a bit of Nick Calathes type to me coming from PG University.
Defensive ability is a question for all but a few of these available guards, and on the point guard side the Kings want a big PG to match up with either Tyreke (as a mismatch) or Beno (a defensive liability) and most of the leftovers are diminutive.
Why do you say the Kings want a BIG PG?
or, what do you consider big. Since Beno at point worked pretty well last season. I would of thought that a big SG was more of a need. Because it forces opponents to play their PG on Reke.
Overall, my feeling is that we did a horrible job of setting up our bigs. Now, that may have been because we had horrible bigs, but neither of our PG’s had significant assists in the paint. Tyreke averaged 2.1 assists inside 10 ft and Beno averaged 2.2. Steve Nash averaged 6 by himself.
Also, one of the complaints from the coaching staff last season was that we were too slow getting into the offense. When Evans is a PG we’ll have a big PG, but when he isn’t, I think we need a speedy playmaker who’s going to feed the ball down low or to slashing wings.

I can't argue with logic
mismatchability was my point. Of course, the PG doesn’t have to be big – Chris Paul is a mismatch every day of the week and twice on Sundays. Most teams have trouble guarding Tyreke but can assign a defender (someone at the 1,2 or 3). Usually that leaves a less adapt and/or smaller defender on Evans’ backcourt mate. If the Kings have a partner who can defend, pass, shoot the 3 and take advantage of smaller guys with post up moves… wait a second… I guess he shouldn’t expected to be available for the minimum or undrafted.
A review of the wish list::
A guy who create his own shot off the dribble would be nice. A playmaker is needed. An outsider shooter is a must. Minimum salary, young sleeper/steal type. Perhaps StR can secretly abduct Steph Curry (I won’t tell if you won’t and I won’t help either)
by betweentheeyes on Jun 27, 2010 3:43 PM PDT up reply actions
Nice list
we probably don’t need to abduct Curry. GS seems to be clearing salary getting ready to transfer the team to the new owners. How about we just take Randolph and Curry off their hands for a future 2nd rounder and cap space.

I'm where HT is I think
I’d want to add a good perimeter shooting SG to pair with Reke (doesn’t have to do a lot else other than defend), though we may have to wait another year – and a speedy, quick PG to counterpoint off the bench.

So where is Uzoh going this summer?
…..( and I’m dropping this name again….Marquez Haynes….)

I could see Dionte Christmas making the club
He’s a good sized shooting guard that can flat out score…not too athletic but his size and smoothness. I like him and think he could fill a roll as a 2 guard for us…not a combo guard, but he can carry the load as he did @ Temple.
Dannyboy
Is flat out score anything at all like flat out play?
I’m getting very concerned that I really don’t care who plays on our VSL team other than players who are already on the team. I know I should care more but for some reason……………………………………………………………………I just don’t.

kind of depressed about how fast teams have scooped up the more prominent undrafted free agent point guards
especially when their seem to be a good opportunity for back-up minutes for both the kings and lakers.
i’m going to be pissed if he signs with you guys.

now that i think about it
a lot of these guys will probably play in both summer leagues.

if this roster cannot dominate inside at VSL level
there’s something amiss
I have figured out what this team needs – a scoring point, scrappy defender… like bobby brown, except, what’s that word i’m looking for, “good”
