Full Kings Vegas Summer League Team Reported

Marty McNeal, the Bee's former Kings beat writer and NBA columnist, has a blog now, titled "Marty Mac's World," which was also the name of his column. There's a FanShot on the front page with McNeal's quote from Joe Maloof that no teams have asked for permission to interview Geoff Petrie. There's something else of interesting on Mac's blog: a full VSL roster. Here's what McNeal reports:

Donald Sloan / Tyrese Rice / Devan Downey
Sylven Landesberg / Dionte Christmas / Ryan Thompson
Omri Casspi / Donté Greene / Tyren Johnson / Lee Cummard
Hassan Whiteside / Wayne Chism / Jason Ellis
DeMarcus Cousins / Steven Hill / Connor Atchley

That's a full 16 players, and no Jason Thompson, who was believed to be headed to Vegas but apparently won't.

Star-divide

Rice went undrafted out of Boston College in 2009 and played in Greece last season. He averaged 17/5 as a senior at BC.

Downey is a tiny scoring guard out of South Carolina who just went undrafted. Johnson was on the second round bubble last week after a solid 18/8 senior season at Lousiana-Lafayette, but faces an uphill battle playing for a franchise with a newly deep frontcourt.

Cummard, a shooter, went undrafted out of BYU in 2009; he got cut by a D-League team last season, for what it's worth. Jason Evans possibly doesn't exist, at least according to Google. Hill has one NBA game under his belt, and played with the Tulsa 66ers in parts of the past two seasons. Atchley is a former University of Texas big man who went undrafted in 2009 and bounced around the D-League last season.

Chism...

is interesting, I suspect I will see that name again. Question is… what uni will he be wearing.

Didn’t last year we have Wes Mathews on our VSL Roster. Besides, Cousins and Chism will bring back the Headband to Sacto

Statistics are like a girl in a bikini. They show a lot, but not everything.

I watched Chism play

a few times last year and really liked him. Glad to be able to see him play a bit more, especially for the Kings VSL squad.

Chism.

When I first heard that Chism was asked to play with the Kings I laughed so hard. He went to Tennessee, which I’m sure you are all aware of, and when he and Cousins played against one another in college, well, let’s just say it was very interesting.

I’m sure they will act as consummate professionals with each other now as this is big-boy business and not college, but I just got a chuckle out of the irony of those two playing with each other since I saw how they played against each other. Funny.

Maybe he means Jason Thompson.

Or maybe JT and Tyreke play a game each?

Maybe he mistyped and meant Jason Thompson, but had Reke on the brain. Don’t we all? I mean there are guys called Tyreese and Tyren on that roster, he could have blanked for a second. Or maybe he just calls JT “Jason Evans” because “thats how they roll”

I don't think JT needs to play.

He’s a better player and a few years older than where Spencer was at last year.
No reason to put him in the Brendan Wright team of older dudes that need to prove they need to be in the league.

But I’m going to go ahead and guess Jason Evans is him.

by sdfd on Jun 29, 2010 6:42 AM PDT reply actions

Didn’t he look mostly lost trying to play center last year at VSL? If I remember right, most VSL games, JT was not one of the five best-producing players on our team. I’d doubt that he has progressed so much that this year he wouldn’t even benefit from playing with competition so far beneath him.

I’d love to see him show the Ron-Ron kind of desire to play as much as possible. That said, I was surprised that management seemed to make a big deal about Spencer not going last year and I wouldn’t be thrilled if they made a big deal about it with JT this year. We don’t need lingering resentment floating around the organization heading into next year.

I guess JT is going all HAWES on us this year........

by Smills9133 on Jun 29, 2010 6:52 AM PDT reply actions

Ah, pre-criticizing

How quaint.

Most people might wait to hear why JT (and Brockman) aren’t there before offering an opinion. Spencer’s reasons for not attending were specious at best, and clearly pissed off the organization.

by otis29 on Jun 29, 2010 7:04 AM PDT up reply actions

I'm guessing its the fact that JT and Brockman really don't have much to prove in VSL

Westphal knows what he’s going to get out of them. They’ve both had 4 years of college, JT has had 2 years in the NBA, Brock one, what is VSL really going to do for them? Spencer meanwhile still had a lot to prove, and a new coach coming in as well.

by Aykis16 on Jun 29, 2010 7:06 AM PDT up reply actions

Spence ticked everybody off with no advance warning.

He was planning on going to VSL last summer, and then basically flaked at the last minute with hardly any advance notification from the coaching staff, from what I understand. As long as JT doesn’t pull the coaching staff’s chain like that, I think he’ll be ok.

yeah maybe for one game

But leaving his brother out of it, I just don’t think it matters. He’s played in over 150 games, started in 114 of them and played over 4500 minutes in the NBA. Plus, we have the same coach so no new system. Last summer when Spencer skipped there was a new coaching staff and he had only played a little over 3000 minutes in the league.

He probably can play both depending on the competition. But, he’s going to get pushed around by PF let alone Centers, until he puts on some muscle. 230 lb centers don’t pose much resistance.

He says that he thinks he’s a 4.

Wild...

Yeah, I know folks were surprised by his setshot from the freethrow extended area. And he seemed to be able to keep up with Udoh while running the floor…but it was difficult to determine, really.

I wonder about his lateral quickness, but it looks okay judging from the combine lane agility test. It would sure be cool if he demonstrated or developed some ability to spread the floor with his shooting or put the ball on the floor.

And yeah, I’m sure alot of it will have to do with matchups. It’ll be cool to see him in the VSL, and it would be great if he is developed enough to get enough minutes to not send him to the D-League, although that seems like the more likely scenario.

Goddamn, I’m happy to have gotten him!

by DustyG on Jun 29, 2010 6:49 PM PDT up reply actions

With his length, I'm not sure he has to put the ball on the floor.

he could have a game like Dirk’s. a couple dekes’ and spins inside 10-12 ft setting up the hook and a little baby jumper and the corner 3, and he’s going to have a decent offensive game. Next to impossible to block even when he faces up.

But, the reality is he’s probably not going to be a low post bruiser. Think more of a Josh Smith, help defender and shot blocker.

Good to see Chism on the roster

I think he has talent, and could be good off the bench in the league.

Also nice to see Devan Downey. The kid is a great scorer, and could be great as offense off the bench, so long as we pair him with another big guard so he doesn’t have to check larger SGs. The kid has fire offensively…it was amazing to watch him singlehandedly beat UK this year. I envision him as a Nate Robinson-type guy: both are small in size, and both provide instant-bench-offense, with the potential to explode for 20+ in any given game.

+1 for Chism

I'm kinda upset

That JT isn’t on the Roster. Maybe he’ll just be working out with them and practice with them, but not playing with them. I hope that’s the case. I also remember a few years ago hearing about Christmas and how he was all WORLD; but this is the first time i’ve heard of him since. I hope maybe he can make our team…..

Uhh

The Japanese one has a somewhat incorrect version of “happy new year” at the beginning.

“Happy New Year” is probably more commonly said as “Akemashite omedetou (gozaimasu)”. The Shinnen part isn’t really something most Japanese people would say.

And “Merry Christmas” in Japanese is actually “Merii Kurisumasu.”

Funny.

Allow me to nitpick.

In Dutch: the first is right (and you threw in a Happy New Year with it). The second has a typo: “Zalig Kerstfeest”.

In Hebrew: “Mo’adim Lesimkha” is very generic, usable for all holidays. “Chena tova” means Happy New Year. I think what you need here is: “Chag Hamolad sameach”.

Downey is a fabulous guard

He’s just small. Interesting to see both Chism and Downey on the summer roster. Very SEC. I think both players could eventually latch on with an NBA team, but the Kings’ roster precludes Chism making the team. But Downey might turn some heads…
