StR Community Free Agent Board, Pick 6

Joe Johnson took the No. 4 spot by a large margin, and Dirk Nowitzki was in such strong position behind him I have slotted him at No. 5 so we can pick up speed. Now, No. 7. LeBron, Wade, Bosh, JJ and Dirk are off the board. Team fit matters.

I went Amare

because he’s the best player on that list. I have no idea what you’d do with the frontcourt, particularly Landry.

That's why I chose Rudy Gay

Fills more of a need than Amare.

you trade Landry for a SG

I picked Booz. I like his outside game better and feels he matches SammyD and BigCuz better and he moves better without the ball (Steve Nash makes everyone move better without the ball, so save your response on that one)

Hey the eye thing came off as pretty freaky.

Of course, you know Stoudemire suffered a detached retina in a game. The injury may have happened earlier as he had been bothered by the same eye right before the game and hurt the same eye in preseason. He took some time off but eventually came back but then had to stop playing again to have eye surgery to repair the retina which caused him to miss two months. I know little about eye injuries so maybe that is not likely to happen again. I really don’t know.

But I have seen all kinds of bad stories involving knee injuries. Stoudemire underwent his microfracture surgery on October 2005. The procedure, where tiny fractures are created in bones around the knee, causes bleeding and clotting to spur new cartilage development. He was supposed to return in February of 2006 but had stiffness in both knees and missed the whole season. There are lingering concerns that he will eventually need another operation on his left knee, as is commonplace following microfracture surgery. His doctor who performed the surgery warned him there was a chance he would need to have another surgery on the other knee in a few years (which is about now).

So yeah, I have no idea how you would know Amare’s knee injury was a “freak injury” (how do you know it’s a freak injury yet Boozer’s stuff isn’t a freak injury?). Even if it was a freak injury, I don’t give a shit it now means he is more likely to have knee problems down the road. I would think he is a pretty big risk for having another surgery and missing another year and possibly losing some more athleticism.

Yeah... trade Landry for an SG

maybe we can get Kevin Martin back.

I get why we’re going through this exercise – not much else going on – but the reality is that its not the right timing for the Kings to sign any of these guys. Maybe Reddick, or some other shooter – as long as he’s cheap – and let the current guys play. The most important thing is not a free agent, but for our current players to develop.

by KeonClark on Jun 29, 2010 11:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Are you me Tom?

Cause I picked Amare for the exact same reason. He is easily the best player from that bunch and an immediate and drastic upgrade over any PF on our roster. Landry can come off of the bench and JT better learn to play Center and fast. As you said, one of the frontcourt players seem to be the odd man out and it just might be JT, which would be a shame. But for Amare, you have to do it.

by Mityt on Jun 30, 2010 7:58 AM PDT up reply actions

Also..

…went Amare. But I guess Gay is leading as he fills a need more than Amare does at this point.

(It feels great to be able to say that!!!)

by henryclemente on Jun 29, 2010 4:37 PM PDT reply actions

Paul Pierce for outside shooting and veteran leadership.

He’d only have a couple more productive years left, but he could fill a need at either wing position while showing the young players the attitude, grit and tenacity it takes to be a true winner. I can’t think of a better player on that list in terms of helping our young guys develop.

Wouldn't have thought...

… that anyone would ever vote for him. Oddly, I have no idea how other people see Pierce. I know some Celtic fans who have a love-hate relationship with the cap (I’m on of them!) and well… it’s weird.

But I think you nailed it there, pretty much; he’s a leader, and that might just be what you guys need, more than someone who can score.

I voted for Pierce too for that exact same reason

His veteran leadership and example of work ethic. Can teach em how to get through an 82+ game grind, and hopefully Kings would make the playoffs with him next season, so he’d show them you HAVE to increase the energy and intensity come playoff team. Also teach em not to get too high or too low emotionally as a playoff series continues.

Also he’s pure points, so when Reke and the front court can’t manufacture points, Pierce could certainly fill in the gaps.

Let us usher in the era of Reke DMC!

by Shizzo on Jun 29, 2010 8:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Hard to sign a player as good as Pierce who has also won a championship

Not to continue the cliche’s for too long, but his overall skill set, locker room presence and various years of playoff and Championship experience could only help so many young players. Especially because, in my opinion, Evans will end up being a (somewhat) off-the-ball perimeter player with a very good inside-outside game (assuming his jumpshot improves significantly), not too dissimilar from Pierce. If Pierce ends up missing out on teaming up with one of these other elite free agents, I think he’s going to sign with the Clippers.

But say the Kings could get him for 3-4 years at about 15-16 million a year. It might seem a little much to invest in one aging player, but two things could happen:

-that investment would largely affect Tyreke and the other players. With just now drafting another young (potential) star in Cousins, we really could use as a team captain/leader/floor general like Pierce.

-After the contract is up we would have the extra money to secure deals for our younger players poised to enter their prime.

Think of it as stage 1 and 2 of this teams next few years. Stage 1 is all about the development of Evans, Cousins, Casspi, Whiteside and Thompson. When Pierce (or any high quality veteran really, preferably a SG or SF) leaves, the reins are officially in Evans control. Stage 2 is all about those players entering their prime and seeing where that takes us as a team.

Do I think it will happen? No.
Should we pursue it? Yes.

by hornetsbuzzlouder on Jun 29, 2010 10:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Agreed

Pierce adds toughness, confidence, and an outside shot. Kiorrik, I’ve long been a fan of Pierce, but in particular his “mature period” of the last four-five years. Dude has stones and a huge heart, not to mention some supernatural ability to get anywhere he wants on the court with a rather limited athleticism. His J is money as well, but that’s been true going back to Kansas.

particularly bell (sorry for repeating) but he is a solid defender, can knock down the three and when he was in PHX he was pretty quick and could finsih on the break; that achilles really hurt him but he is eager to come back and prove that he can play. Also, I’d take Tmac at the vet minimum

Filling the need at SG. Who?

Should there be a choice between Joe Johnson or Rudy Gay? Those are the only two from the last two lists that could fill our need.

My guess is that they both get #1 because that is the team need. So maybe the question is who would people rather pick.

Joe Johnson or Rudy Gay?

He’s not close to McGrady. He can’ even be affixed to any -lite or poor man’s McGrady constructions. After four seasons in the league, he is who he is, a volume-shooting, average defending, non-passing SF. In the three areas a wing player has to be good in, passing, scoring and defending, he’s average in only one of them. His passing is amongst the worse in the league and his scoring lacks the efficient punch of free throws and threes.

and I have a strong feeling that if his name was included in the previous poll, He would have given Joe Johnson a serious run for his money

And one could argue that Tyreke hasnt learned team basketball yet….but we would all agree that he has the potential to and will learn to play team basketball
Why cant the same be said of a player just 23 years old?

Reke, Gay, Greene, Cousins, Dal with Landry, JT, Casspi, Cisco, Beno off the bench?

How is that not a playoff team next year? Long, athletic lineup. Everyone can play three positions. Gay got his deal so he is no longer under pressure to “get his” – force him to focus on defense and smart plays. Reke and Cousins can fill the offense while Greene and Dal cleanup, and everyone off the bench is bringing energy, fire, and a change of intensity.

I like it. I like it a lot.

Surprised at how many votes Gay is getting

I like Rudy Gay, but I really don’t want the Kings to be the team to overpay him. Nor do I think they will be.

I think Amare and Boozer should be the next two off the board for the same reasons you would still sign Bosh. Both are upgrades over Landry/JT/Brockman. You sign either one of them, pair them with Dalembert, and bring Cousins off the bench. At the end of next season, you let Dalembert walk and you pair Amare or Boozer with Cousins. You’d trade JT or Landry for another asset.

I’m amazed at how people are reacting to a sudden position of strength in the frontcourt and are completely ignoring the logic behind additional improvement.

Never forget: I am a complete idiot

Hmm...

OK, so we sign Amare and Boozer. We take those two. How do we have minutes to give out to all those bigs? What do we do about our lack of depth at PG and SG?

I don’t think it unreasonable to look at the depth across the team, feel good about our recent acquisitions, and think about plugging some of the holes we still have left.

Maybe we needed a bit of a scenario. Something along the lines of there was a trade for one of our bigs and we got back a PG/SG. We are now looking for a FA big. Who would you choose X,Y, or Z?

I think we also need dollars and cents figures…
