As noted in the ESPN article by Chad Ford today, only the Knicks currently have room to sign 2 max free agents (not counting Miami). Many have clamored for the Kings to get into the action to aquire some assets. Here is the proposed trade:
Courtney Lee ($1.35m)
Kris Humphries ($3.2m expiring contract)
Nets get: Future second round pick
Why Kings do it: Get a young SG sidekick to pair with Tyreke or a solid first guard off the bench. Lee is 24, 37% 3pt shooter (shot 40% as a rookie with Orlando), strong defender, NBA finals experience and a solid all-around locker room guy. He showed in Orlando the ability to be a solid role player. This also allows the Kings to avoid potentially overpaying for free agents this summer and save the cap space (though I think JJ Reddick would be great in the back court with Tyreke).
Humphries' contract is expiring, so he will not effect our cap situation next summer. He would likely be waived.
Why Nets do it: Additional cap space to have room for 2 max free agents. Though Courtney Lee is a nice prospect, he is replaceable. Getting the additional room could be the selling point to get LBJor the other big name free agents to go to NJ. Tough to give away, but worth to add $4.5m in cap room and have space to 2 max FAs.
