Free Agency Extravaganza Open Thread

The Wolves signed their 2008 second-round pick to a three-year, $13 million deal, according to ESPN's Chad Ford. That's $4 million more than No. 5 pick DeMarcus Cousins will make over the next three years.

Use this as a free agency open thread until the morning.

so let me get this straight

you are basing your idea of Kahn being a moron on the fact that he signed a guy who is a free agent on a video game? Is that right?

Hey! What're you kicking me for? You want me to ask? All right, I'll ask! Ma'am, where do the high school girls hang out in this town?

by wallywagon11 on Jun 30, 2010 9:52 PM PDT up reply actions

He would have been a first one pick but everyone thought he was going to stay in Europe

He is a 24 year old center/power forward. He is one of the best players in Europe. The signing cost so much because Marc Gasol was such a huge hit in Memphis (Marc agreed to $9 million for 3 years). Peko is not a nobody.

But has he done anything to prove himself in the league? you are overpaying guy that still hasn't come close to realising his potential.

At least Marc has proven that he can rebound and isn’t a finesse player like his bro. I’m just saying that you are overpaying peko b4 he has become a huge hit. He wasn’t even drafted by the t’wolves so what is the big deal of signing him when free agency is upon us?

I'm about 93% sure that Marion did Marijuana, the other 7% is probably weed.

by Bkj on Jun 30, 2010 10:00 PM PDT up reply actions

So Marc proved he was a player before he got into the league but Peko hasn't proven he can play?

I’m confused.

Memphis gave Marc Gasol a huge contract and they took a big risk on it but they had his brother as a barometer (well, kind of). Peko has been in the league for three years but

has only played in 111 games out of a possible 246 and has averaged 4 points. Three years, he doesn’t have the stats to warrant 4 mill and change per year. Why sign the guy to that large a contract when free agency is among us, especially when you have darko, jeffereson, kevin love (Who shouldn’t be coming off the bench) and peko? The twolves are stacked with pg’s sf’s and big men and all their big men and pg’s are kind of the same mold; sessions and flynn big and love.

A few things

1. Pekovic does not average 4 points a game. He did average 4.8 points back in 2006/2007. Before and after he had never averaged less. He also has played in 228 games. I have zero clue out of how many games but that seems like quite a bit in 5 years in Euro ball. Basically I have zero clue what stats you are using.

2. Marc Gasol was not a smaller risk because people knew his brother. Chris Webber had a brother not make it to the NBA. JT’s brother is trying to make it into the NBA. Plus, Marc is nothing like his brother.

3. They are not in the same league but why not look at Gasol and Pekovic’s Euro numbers and compare. I would like to use PER 40 because it gives a solid base line.

Marc Gasol in ACB 07/08 PER 40 (34 games)
19.6 PPG (65.3% FG) – 10.1 Rbs – 2.8 Ast – 1.6 Stl – 2.2 Blk

Marc Gasol PER in EuroCup (17 games)
20.1 PPG (61.8% FG) – 9.0 Rvs – 3.7 Ast – 1.4 Stl – 2.0 Blk

Nikola Pekovic PER 40 in Greek League (26 games)
30.8 PPG (72.5%) – 9.1 Rbs – 1.8 Ast – 1.2 Stl – 1.3 Blk

Nikola Pekovic PER 40 in Euro (13 games)
26.9 PPG (60.7%) – 6.5 Rbs – 1.0 Ast – 1.1 Stl – 0.7 Blk

Hey! What're you kicking me for? You want me to ask? All right, I'll ask! Ma'am, where do the high school girls hang out in this town?

He averaged 4 points for his career. where are you getting these #'s from? dear god, do you always have to embarass me with all these stats? I get my info from yahoo sports and it says peko has played 11 games averages 4 ppg for his career

2.4 boards and .2 assits. And I don’t know where you see any mistakes in my comment above, I’m talking about how both love and big al are big bodied big men that can provide low-post scoring that is all; sure they aren’t technically of the same mold, but I also did say kind of. I enjoy our back and forth convo’s cuz I learn a lot. Thanks wally, and btw I never said smaller risk; I just said that they took a huge risk but because the grizzlie franchise was built around pau they knew what his celing could have been and what is low’s could have been.

Well, for one he isn't a free agent

Second, 3.3 million a year for a backup center isn’t bad, especially when Darko is a free agent. The fact they signed Pekovic and the fact he has more upside suggests they might not have much of a role for Darko.

I cant see either guy being a second option on any team. Also, assuming Lebron wants to be the eric maynor, or even eric maynor lite, he will have to be the number one guy. I know they are trying to “dumb it down” for the masses but really? You are going to ignore all the the cap holds of the 8 mandatory minimum salaries? 8 × 460,000= 3,680,000. No.

If you begin the off-season under the cap, you do not have the MLE…well, you do but, if you sign players and get to the cap, you have to waive the rights to it.

Say a team is at 50 million and the cap is 56. You have the MLE to work with or the 6 million but not both. If you begin the off-season at 57 million, you still have the MLE.

Truth is, on talent alone, and nothing else, I’d rank DMC 1st.

If so, then the Heat would have a lot more flexibility in re-signing him.

"Where hope goes to die"

by napg on Jul 1, 2010 6:22 AM PDT up reply actions

They have Bird rights but what they can't do...

is sign two huge contracts and eat up all the cap room and then sign Wade to circumvent the cap. The Heat have a 17.1 million dollar “cap hold” for Wade. That cap hold remains until either he resigns or they waive that cap hold (and his Larry Bird rights). So basically, even though he isn’t under contract, Wade is still on the books for the Heat until he signs with them or someone else or they waive his right. This is why you hear that the Heat cap figure is something like 24 million right now.

Truth is, on talent alone, and nothing else, I’d rank DMC 1st.

That is what really sucks for a team like the Knicks. They have Gallinari and Chandler. If they get shunned, they are going to have to sign a bunch of shit bags to get to the 75% mark. Rudy Gay to the Kings

Perhaps the most underrated and unnoticed upcoming superstar… Rudy Gay

I think this guy cannot be passed up. Forgot all the other big names… None of them will come to our small market city…

Put Rudy Gay alongside Tyreke in the open court…. we will head back to the playoffs after a four year drought…

We have a solid backcourt with Beno and Tyreke… Very versatile and skilled power forward in Carl Landry… and if everything works out……. a monster inside the paint in DeMarcus Cousins….

Every championship team needs at least two superstars … Tyreke and Rudy Gay can certainly qualify as two superstars in the very near future….

PLEASE SIGN RUDY GAY!

by RepeatToeat on Jun 30, 2010 10:03 PM PDT reply actions

Rudy Gay

This guy has sufficient handles for the small forward position. He can explode on the break and go for highlight dunks. Perhaps the most impressive thing about Rudy Gay is his sweet shooting stroke.

Usually guys like him with so much athleticism struggle to find the balance between pure athleticism and the finesse game. Rudy Gay is a very skilled offensive weapon with the ability to shoot threes and also post up. His step back jumper his unguardable with his great length and jumping ability.

Defensively, he can improve but as I stated earlier, he has long arms and great leaping abilities so defense certainly shouldn’t be much of a problem.

by RepeatToeat on Jun 30, 2010 10:11 PM PDT up reply actions

i definately like his game. very athletic, can run the floor and bring a nice oop to reke’s alley. but can you see him sliding over and getting minutes at the 2 spot?

2 spot

Well. Rudy definitely has the ability to guard two guards in this league with his speed, length, and athleticism.

If indeed Rudy slides to the two, the Kings will have a very lengthy team on the court… imagine Tyreke, Rudy, Donte, Cousins, and Landry on the court at once….

Cap room

http://espn.go.com/nba/dailydime/_/page/dime-freeagency-100629/cap-room-summary

“What can they do to get more? The Kings lost their ability to sign a maximum free agent when they traded for Samuel Dalembert earlier this month. Another $1.21 million needs to come off the books to clear enough cap room. This could be accomplished by removing Omri Casspi’s $1.25 million salary. "

Rudy Gay is not a max contract player so the Kings can still afford him. Sign him to a 5 year $50 million contract.

by RepeatToeat on Jun 30, 2010 10:24 PM PDT up reply actions

Except for the fact that Gay is a restricted free agent and...

Memphis would match a 5yr/50mill. To get Gay, you are going to have to overpay, maybe even front load a deal to make Memphis shy away from matching. They have given him a qualifying offer so they retain the right to match any deal, regardless of salary cap.

Truth is, on talent alone, and nothing else, I’d rank DMC 1st.

Memphis most likely won't pay big money for Rudy. They will let him walk

I don’t think the Kings will pay money for him either. I would be very surprised if the Kings sign anyonne until after VSL is over. My guess is that the Kings will not sign any veterans above the minimum until after the season starts.

There will be a ton of bad signings yet to come. I am strong believer of sitting on the sidelines and letting it all play out and then picking and chosing or waiting until next summer and then pick and chose as the CBA puts the hammer down.

Considering they just up and gave up on Brewer and Randolph’s contract is up next year, I would think they are planning on spending the money to keep Gay.

Rudy Gay Superstar

I don’t expect him to be in the same class as Lebron, Wade, and Kobe.

Are you kidding me? He hasn’t improved his game at all? He averaged 19.6 points a game on a 40 win team with three players with over 18 ppg. He can easily average 25 if he wasn’t playing with a Zach Randolph or O.J. Mayo.

I really don’t think you have seen him play … He had a 41 point game last year. He is a proven clutch performer.

Whether or not he fits with the Kings is one thing but saying that Rudy Gay has not “improved his game at all” is a completely false statement.

Percentages and averages havn't changed since his second year in the league.

He is a decent player, but I don’t understand the hype around him.

Above average scorer, decent shooter, average rebounder, average defender.

I am sure I would come around to him as a Sacramento King, but right now I don’t see how he is worth the money he is going to command in the FA market, most likely above 12-13 million a year.

I see ur point, but for some reason I feel like he'd improve significantly as a 2nd banana or even tertiary player

rather than being depended on as a superstar. Just from his body language and abilities, he certainly cannot be the best player on a playoff team (atleast at this current stage in his development). But paired with Reke and some legit bigmen, we’ve seen him be able to slip in and do what’s asked of him on offense whether it be slashing or shooting. And his defense should improve significantly with proper coaching and not having to carry the load on offense (energy management).

I would not mind rudy gay as the Kings SG, albeit on a 5 year contract worth $50m only…which is very, very likely underpaying him compared to other offers.

I might be totally wrong but oh well

If I was Lebron or Bosh or Wade and entering into an offseason where I was about to be a free agent, I think I would basically just want to party a lot right before. Before the media is all over you (obviously talking about you but you don’t necessarily have to be in the lime light doing press conferences or setting up official meetings with teams), before you have more commitments, and considering it’s their only free time after basically traveling non stop for 9 months I would think if I were in their shoes I would just get ridiculously drunk and party non stop.

I almost wonder if when they “had their summit” it was real informal get together where they sort of talked about stuff but then basically just paritied non stop.

But if I were Bosh I would honestly be pretty happy in Chicago with Noah, Rose, and Deng. I could totally see picking that over the other options. I mean, Bosh would kind of be a second fiddle to Rose only because Rose is the home town kid (er, of course if Rose doesn’t improve much nevermind).

No one should minimize how difficult it is going to be to extract James out of Cleveland, no matter how shaky these past two months have been for the franchise. The Cavs are completely against a sign-and-trade and will dare James to walk away and leave $30 million on the table. This is why the Nets are so intriguing, because the ability of New Jersey to sell James rests largely on the believability of the plan hatched with Prokhorov and his people.

This is even a better part of the piece
Everyone has an agenda here, and yet ultimately LeBron James has to reach that moment of truth about leaving Cleveland, leaving his home and accepting what will always come with the decision: sheer derision and disdain in his backyard. He’s never leaving Akron as his home, never moving out and you wonder if James has the stomach to live out his days as a pariah there.

For all the sexy selling jobs of the Russian billionaire and South Beach and Michael Jordan’s backyard, the pull of home remains the toughest competitor in the battle for LeBron James’ heart and mind. Free agency starts at midnight ET, and the first order of business will be a billionaire’s presentation promising LeBron James nothing short of what he’s always wanted: the world.

LeBron wants to have the world AND Akron. He’s not going to have both in this scenario.

No

I think LeBron has been trying to figure out an angle where he could leave the Cavs and still have Akron. I don’t think anyone in Akron would really forgive him. He’d get heckled at his favorite mall (which doesn’t happen now) and he’d always be blasted for not making it work in Cleveland.

The fact was that he maneuvered Cleveland into making moves in the first place. Now he’s trying to say the franchise isn’t up to snuff when they were doing what he wanted. Dan Gilbert wants nothing more than LeBron happy.

If the team was really that concerned, they should have pulled the trigger on the Amaré deal.

Petrie has been the Kings front man for years and he still consults the brothers Maloof when making deals. Ownership should have asked the question then- If we get you Amaré, will you stay?

Cleveland isn’t up to snuff. They have spent the last 3 weeks looking like the bigger cluster fuck of all time. Izzo, no Scott, no Izzo, no Shaw, no Scott, wait, definitely Shaw, go ahead and hire a staff, wait, wait, it’s Scott…for sure…if that’s ok with you LeBron.

Cleveland is a mess, get out now. Sadly, the Knicks and the Heat are the only stable options available.

I agree with jjham, I think LBJ is trying to get someone to join him in Cleveland

but it’s too hard of a sell. He needs help to win the ring, and if he gets Bosh or Amare to join him he gets his money and his chance. The problem is if he waits too long the best options might decide not to wait and sign someone else.

Cap room isn't the only way to sign a max FA

Bosh does a max S&T. The trade is Jamison who makes $13.3M and JJ Hickson who makes $1.5M for Bosh. Since Bosh is a BYC, they use his old contract which is $15.8M, so the salaries are withing the 125% target of the Traded Player Exemption.

And, LBJ can still sign for the Max.

Maybe because they will need a PF once Bosh is gone

and the depth chart is Amir Johnson, Reggie Evans and Joey Dorsey.

And, both Jamison and Hickson are better than anyone they have.

And, without getting something in return, they gain less than $10M in cap space if Bosh doesn’t do a sign and trade, and just leaves.

90% of the people on this board wouldn’t stay in Cleveland (not just the town, but the team situation), but they’ll bitch about LeBron leaving because he’s “arrogant”. Boo-freaking-hoo.

Go get your money LeBron. Go play where you want to play. If that’s Cleveland, great. If not, you’ve earned the right to go where you want.

That’s what being a free agent is all about.

Just because Jimmy down at the Cleveland mall is going to boo you the next time you’re in town, who cares? People boo Kobe, people booed Jordan, and people are going to boo you. It comes with the territory.

He can already wipe his ass with Benjamins and he can sign an extension if he likes his new landing spot or just sign another max deal with someone else in 5 years when he is still only 30.

Not a lot of leverage in that threat, I understand the sentiment but it’s kind of like cutting off your nose to spite your face. It also takes Dallas out of any running for LBJ if they were really players any way.

I call them players for other teams.

All three players would have to take 15 million, Beasley would still have to be traded and there would be no cash for Haslem. There is no way to assemble this team. Don;t watch the ESPN bullshit on how this could happen. They are talking out of their asses and retarding the information so the masses can digest it. Do the math yourself. Mac money is 16.65ish. Add all three then add Beasley @ 5 million, Chalmers @ 854,000 and then 7 salary cap holds at 460,000 which is required, not an option. Then take away Beasley and Chalmers if they could possibly deal them but add 2 more contract holds at 460,000. 3 max guys = 49.95 million. 9 minimum players = 4,140,000. So what is that 54 of the 56 million in cap space so you get 2 million to redistribute among the 9 players. No MLE. No Haslem unless he wants to play for pennies. Take a million away from all three players and you still only have 9 million to sign 9 players. Good luck fielding that team.

Truth is, on talent alone, and nothing else, I’d rank DMC 1st.

It's not 1 season or bust

they’d get the MLE next year and year after, etc. so they could conceivably build a team of adequate value.

not saying it’s good plan, but the annual MLE holds legitimate value for them after that 3 headed hydra of domination

Yes but that also means that those 3 have to slug through this season.

And it also means that the team is sure that there is going to be an MLE built into the next CBA.

That is a big “If”. Most reports have the MLE being a main target for owners in the negotiations. They want it reduced by a huge amount or done away with. They also want the other exemption gone completely. If I had to guess, the MLE will be reduced to 3-4 million and the other exemption will be gone. This will make signing quality players a lot more difficult.

Truth is, on talent alone, and nothing else, I’d rank DMC 1st.

Unless they go to a Hard Cap which isn't likely they'll be some type of MLE

it’s in the best interest of the players and owners.

Franchises need to resign their stars and retain fan loyalty. But, without some type of cap exemptions there would be almost no movement of role players.

I look for changes in contract length and guaranteed money as the main changes the owners are looking for this time around.

Anthony Parker was a free agent. They had just as much of a need at SG as they did at SF. I have no idea how you think SG was not a need position.

I don't think adding Tmac or Iverson is really going to be the tipping point

to pushing this team to greatness. Just be patient. You might even be surprised to see DMC become a franchise type player, and him paired with Reke could be better than anyone Iverson or McGrady has had.

still dont understand WHY we let him go in the first place…
