Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

It will be interesting to see if Utah matches. This is a little ridiculous, especially considering the players on the Blazers roster.

Do they just have it in for Utah? First Millsap and now Matthews.

It’s obviously going to be hard for Utah to match, but after losing Boozer I can’t see where they can afford to lose another one of their stars from last year. Plus, they have Kirilenko coming off the books next season, so I think that they will match the offer. They’ll still be under the Lux Tax. But, that’s like a 500% raise for Matthews no matter where he goes.

I say let him walk.

That’s too much money to overpay the guy. Wait till next summer to use their $15m in cap space to make some impact signings. Summer after that Okur’s $11m is off the books also.

It's amazing Vulcan complains about the money Pritchard committed players to....

….and yet the Blazers commit a contract like this to Matthews under Vulcan’s control. Vulcan has to be the funniest set of smart idiot’s on the planet. The only people who lose here are Blazer fans really.

We're used to it.

Wait….

For, besides continuing thus to soften body and mind, as these commodities had lost almost all their pleasantness through habit, and as they had at the same time degenerated into true needs, being deprived of them became much more cruel than possessing them was sweet; and people were unhappy to lose them without being happy to have them." -Jean-Jacques Rousseau

Seems like a lot.

But overpaying is sometimes underpaying in the long run with a guy just off his rookie season.

I am frustrated

I wouldnt want to have any of those swingmen (Matthews, Redick, Morrow, Korver) at the price they are getting except for Morrow….But I just want to see some interest from the Kings…I dont care if we sign them or not I want to see some interest

"I have missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I have lost almost 300 games. On 26 occasions I have been entrusted to take the game winning shot...and missed. And I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why... I succeed." Michael Jordan.

Maybe they've had interest in the players

but not the price points. There is no news if the Kings don’t come to an agreement with someone. That is, I am not expecting an announcement from the KIngs saying, “We had an interest in Wes Matthews, but not at 5 and 25.”

by betweentheeyes on Jul 10, 2010 7:24 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

well i dont mean it like that

I would just like to see in the article for the Wes Matthews or Anthony Morrow’s offer sheets….something around the lines of this

Matthews, the 2nd year player had interest from a number of teams including _ , __ , Sacramento.

The Kings also reportedly showed interest in Morrow, the swingman from Golden State.

I dont really mean that the team announces they had interest, I just want see something not announced by the Kings that tells me….the Kings are looking at the leftovers in the FA market. I am probably just overreacting though, Petrie will find a diamond in the rough here.

"I have missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I have lost almost 300 games. On 26 occasions I have been entrusted to take the game winning shot...and missed. And I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why... I succeed." Michael Jordan.

Um

Weird analogy there….but it totally makes sense. Agreed.

Here's the problem -

Geoff Petrie and the Kings have never done this – all of their negotiations are classified.

Remember all of the talk before the Martin/Landry trade? Or the Dalembert deal?

I understand what you’re saying, but it’s just not how the KIngs do business. And I’m cool with that. I don’t need to know all of the players that we got outbid on, or the ones that chose to play elsewhere. But maybe that’s just me.

I see

Its just weird how the only little snippet of information regarding the Kings and FA’s is about ……Josh Howard.

While Washington was the first team to express interest after free agency began, Howard said Miami, New York, Sacramento, Boston and the Los Angeles Clippers have also been in contact with his agent.

"I have missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I have lost almost 300 games. On 26 occasions I have been entrusted to take the game winning shot...and missed. And I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why... I succeed." Michael Jordan.

I dont care who says it.

My wording of words really complicated this. Its not like I think the Kings are going to announce they had interest in someone. I would just like to see signs that the Kings are active in the “lesser FA” market.

I realize the Kings arent going to announce “On July 11th 2010, We met with FA guard Kyle Lowry at Dave and Busters in Roseville”

I don’t care where the source is, whether it is the Sac Bee, Jason Jones, Woj, Chad Ford, an agent, it doesnt matter to me.

I just want to see signs (not coming from the Kings) that the Kings are active now.

Many people (including GP) would probably not want it that way and I respect that, a surprising FA addition that had nothing on it would be pretty cool.

After this summer is over

we may be talking how underpaid Cisco is.

There are some guys smarter than me, some guys better looking, I take comfort in the fact that there is no guy that is both.

by ElRonToro on Jul 10, 2010 5:07 PM PDT reply actions

That's true

he’s going to be making $1mil less than Morrow, but does everything except shooting 3s better than Morrow and Cisco still shoots 40% on those.

by SPTSJUNKIE on Jul 10, 2010 6:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Not by comparison with Matthews, career-wise

WM: FG% 48.3% 3PT% 38.2% 9.4 PPG in 24 minutes

FG: FG% 44.3% 3PT% 37.0% 9.0 PPG in 23 minutes

It gets less favorable if you compare the numbers in the context of rookie stats. Matthews is also a starter on a playoff team. Even with this contract offer, which seems a little bit high, he’ll likely be a more productive player over the length of it than Garcia will be.

I know you don't care for Cisco so this won't matter but

Cisco has played behind a very good 2 gaurd his whole career & Cisco has never had Deron Williams or any PG who could even hold Deron’s jock to play with. Mathews also went to a team who had no other real 2 on the roster.

Andre Miller is an excellent distributer but he is getting old so lets see how good he gets. Remember how everyone was praising Jamario Moon with Toronto(playing with a great distributer Calderon) Then he went to the heat & Cavs & did nothing.

I love beating dead horses.

Man, it looks like Kyle Lowry

is the top FA guard we can pursue at this point. Money is flying around like crazy!

The thinking is that a trade is in the works.

Depending whether or not Utah matches. Otherwise we would have 8 guards under contract. Matthews isn’t bad, but a surprising dollar amount to be sure. Maybe Portland just wants to stick it to Utah?

I would guess a sign and trade with new York

For Fernandez is my guess. They need a scoring guard and I can only imagine how happy Rudy would be to get more playing time.

We should go after Fernandez

We don’t have much to offer right now. Maybe a lottery protected 1st rounder. He would be worth it if he wasn’t up for free agency after this season(I don’t know if he is for sure but I think he is) He’s just as good as Reddick.

Fernandez

would be a great option for us. He is young but very experienced with all of his ACB/ Euroleague/ Olympic play and in my opinion is a classic example of a good player on the wrong team.
He is stuck behind everyone in Portland and hasn’t really gotten a chance to show what he can do. On the right team he is a leader who can play off the ball and isn’t afraid to take and make the last shot. I would absolutely support trading a first round pick for Rudy.

Portland goes after the best player possible....

so since the L-word, Bosh, dwade, Lee are all taken….obviously Wes Matthews is the next best player…..I think……
