Boobs, not Noobs!

PrintI know most of us StR vets are tired of some of the noobs that tend to not follow the preferred FanPosting protocol. We all probably wish we could replace the noobs with some boobs, which would make things much more enjoyable, probably even for StR's team mom, LPA. However, there's no magical button that can automatically turn a crappy post into something like this:
Believe me, I've tried. A lot.
That being said, what we can do is just ignore them. Obviously its more fun for some of us to post our opinions on these posts. Some of us want to give serious English lessons. Some of us just, such as myself, want to be assholes. It's not my fault it's one of my few redeeming qualities. But, I'm going to strongly recommend that we just ignore the trolling noobs. If it's a crappy FanPost that should've been a FanShot, flag it. If it should've been a comment somewhere else, flag it. If it's terrible atrocious garbage, flag it. Upon flagging one of these posts, scroll to the very top of the page and hit the button that says "home." It'll magically take you someplace that'll return you to sanity and let you enjoy the wonderful writing of some of the better contributors.
This may be hard to believe, but in the past I spent several years working as a counselor in group homes for both troubled teens and adults with mental health issues. One thing I learned is that when someone is doing something that is persistently annoying like yelling as loud as they can or making annoying sounds to get attention, or writing 8,000 word posts with Pat Benatar songs for that matter, it's best to just ignore them. Eventually they just stop because they recognize that what they're doing isn't working.
So, please join me in ignoring crappy posts. I know it'll be hard for some of us, but I figure that if I, as the biggest asshole here, lead the way and set an example, so can everyone else. And if it becomes really hard just come back to this post and enjoy:

I don't think most of these awful posts are being done by trolls.
That implies that they are only doing this to be irritating, which I don’t think is the case.
The posts mainly reflect ignorance, which can be cured, although I am not the type to hold my breath. I am all in favor of ignoring them, and not responding, but the only down side is that garbage quickly fills the queue, and we’re left with nothing on the front page except
“Tyr3k3 is AWESOME LOLZ !!!!!!!!!!!! – more after the jump”
So, as ever, I feel as though we are better to depend on the moderators and gentle self-correction (“Did you flunk out of grade school, tard-face?”) than to just hope the problem goes away.
Some of the new guys are great, and are really contributing. Most of you aren’t, just like us old guys. You are allowed to enjoy the site without necessarily feeling obligated to contribute to it. This place is just like real life, in that you learn a hell of a lot more with your mouth closed than open.
And as ever, thanks for the boobs.

Although in Pookey’s defense, it was probably one of the Top 10 posts I have ever read here. Even if it should have been a novel instead of a fan post.
I was working on a post for this, but I'll state the "highlights" here
1 – I agree with the premise of ignoring bad FanPosts. Any of us that post will tell you that the greatest insult is a lack of commenting – it is worse than anything that anyone can say. If it is a bad FanPost, ignore it.
2 – As a site, we may begin taking a firmer line with FanPosts as it pertains to structure, as well as whether it is actually a Fanpost, as opposed to a FanShot or a glorified comment. Threads are threads, but there should be a higher standard for what goes on the main StR page. If you refuse to follow the most basic principles of language and punctuation, you probably just want to stay in the threads. Sloppy writing does not belong on the main page here. We’re not asking for Steinbeck here. We are going to require the most basic of writing skills. I know that some may consider this as elitist, and for that I apologize. But we take pride in the site, and we believe that there should be some basic standards.
3 – Use FanShots! If your post is a link with little or no personal commentary, it’s a FanShot. If you have a full blown comment to attach to a link, post the link under FanShots and then post your comment in the thread. FanPosts are little articles unto themselves.
I don’t want to drive anyone away here, and I welcome everyone to participate to your individual level of comfort. At the end of the day, it’s the members that make StR special. Thanks in advance for your dooperation.

If there are no comments, we would delete it and advise the member off line. If there are comments, I normally make a comment that the post will be removed, I close the thread, and I delete it later.

This isn't as bad as last year.
Last year was gutterly awful. I don’t know if it’s dumb luck or some of the idiots have stopped toking on the idiocy bong. But, most of the newer people are contributing the way they can.

I'm sure I will be on this list.
I’ve even had an “ass hat” made for when I feel like digging in. In all seriousness, I love StR and when I practice tough love, I try to do it in a way to attempt to help the person understand and be better. It doesn’t always come out that way and sometimes it boils down to straight snarkyness but my first attempt is usually meant as a tutorial. Why is it so had to use the Manage Post button and then Edit post button. If you can figure out how to post boobs, you can edit your post if you have made something that the consensus says is less than adequate.
There are some talented newbies. Personally, I’m looking for more work from King7420. I think he is talented, he just jumped the gun on the whole off-season thing.
Truth is, on talent alone, and nothing else, I’d rank DMC 1st.

I disagee
with the strategy of ignoring. That works great for trolls who are intentionally trying to hurt a community. However, if there is a real Kings fan who is genuinely trying to contribute but breaks a rule, gentle education and support are the best protocols. Ignoring them will probably just lead to them feeling like an outsider and either leaving or not posting again. Which in the long term is bad for the community.
If it is not to standard,
the site moderators will remove the post and advise the member as to why, doing all of this “off line” and in a much less embarrassing fashion. It is much more difficult to remove a post once people begin commenting.

The problem is, we do act like jerks towards these guys. Some people are pretty nice, but a lot of us are not. I’m guilty of this too. And I know that part of the reason that I’m mean is because the crappy posts bother me. I spend a lot of time on this site because I work a boring office job. I honestly think thrashing people isn’t the best way to welcome newcomers. I know some people lurk and then decide to start a new thread before participating in comments, but I can easily see some of them not reading tons of comments. But overall, bad posts annoy the shit out of me. I recommended ignoring them because if you’re like me at all then you too get quite annoyed. And quite frankly, it’s a little dumb to get so annoyed with people over the internet.
I like what Section’s talking about. When we flag a post the moderators can check it out and put an end to it. They can then let that user know why via an email. Maybe someone can write a FanPost that’s kind of the end all be all in FanPosting etiquette that Ziller, Section, et. al can link to when they contact said users. I’d be willing to do it if people gave me enough suggestions as to what it should cover.

from my perspective, I’m new to this type of site and really enjoy reading some of the articles here. I’m guilty of writing some bad pieces, and promptly deleted them after a few negative comments made me realize how bad the post was.
we learn through trial and error, so I say just show the bad posts their errors and I think the stuff will steadily improve.
We all make mistakes and it's important to learn from them.
For instance, this thread has given me the idea that if all else fails, I shall from now on include a picture of boobs so that I can draw attention away from my failings as a poster.

Ironic would be if my post were directed at people who write FanPosts/Shots about things not related to basketball. This post isn’t ironic. The boobs part was more of a joke, but the rest of it was just some advice on dealing with the noobs that come and annoy a lot of people with absolutely terrible posts. If my post is somehow “ironic” then isn’t it also ironic when Ziller or Section post something similar regarding rules and ettiquette for the site? Those have nothing to do with basketball, they are strictly StR-related, as is this post.

The complaints on StR have all been over three things:
*Terrible FanPosts that are written using poor grammar and writing skills
*Redundant FanPosts that should’ve been a comment in another thread rather than becoming its own
*FanPosts that should be FanShots
Those are the posts I was trying to address here. Sure, I did it in much the same way a 14 year old boy might by making a play on the old “hugs, not drugs” line and putting pics of a couple of women with amazing breasts. But that’s not ironic, just childish.

I'm totally down
I’d already liked him as a player but he became a new man crush for me. He took some hard hits, got screwed out of some goals, but always manned up and played his ass off.
