Kings vs. Pistons, Vegas Summer League Game 1
At 3 PM PT, the Kings' Vegas Summer League team will match up against the Pistons. The marquee match-up is Kings center DeMarcus Cousins, the fifth pick in the 2010 NBA Draft, against Pistons center Greg Monroe, the seventh pick. We also renew the Omri Casspi-Austin Daye rivalry, and mix in a little Donte Greene-Jonas Jerebko to go with it. Donald Sloan will be the starting point guard for your Sacramento Kings.
Let's go Kings.

I think the bigger matchup is two players on the same team.
Donte vs Omri.
The Pistons will throw 3 different forwards at Donte and Omri in Jerekbo, Daye, and Summers. I want to see who will adjust and play well. However, after seeing Mario Elie’s comments, He said Donte would get the majority of the minutes today.

I also havent heard anything about Wayne Chism
in practice notes or anywhere. Is he coming off the bench today or what?

Fair enough. I think if Donte and Omri can play in the VSL, there’s no reason why the 6th big man on the team shouldn’t either.

I think I’m going to check out that wizards/clippers game later.
DVRd this and watched it later
Greg Monroe was a hack machine. Dude gave Donte a bloody nose, hard foul on Whiteside. Brutal.
Observations:
Cousins was everything I hoped for and more. Post skills looked smooth and with his bulk, he moved whatever defender he had on him. His jumpshot is ugly but he looks like he can hit them consistently. There was only one jumpshot that was badly off target, the rest were in or barely missing. I liked what I saw defensively. He wasn’t Whiteside block wise (who is?) but he laid out his body numerous times for a couple of blocking fouls and charges. I loved each one of those, even the blocking fouls because they showed that Cousins gives a crap. I mean this is Summer League, dude doesn’t have to worry about a contract yet he laid out his body more than any other player in the game. Hell, he laid out his body more than most big men in NBA games.
And finally, the passing! Holy Mackerel! I read that his passing was good out of double teams but I didn’t expect this! He’s already one of the better passing big men in the NBA. As far as NBA players go, only Kevin Love is a better outlet passer than Cousins and his passing out of double teams was quick and precise. It still remains to be seen how good his offensive game will be in the NBA but his passing, rebounding, heart will be there. If his post game does come through…watch out NBA bigmen! the next beast is coming to destroy your NBA soul!!! MUAHAHAHA!!!
Whiteside- well now I know how he averaged 5 blocks per game. It’s summerleague but I haven’t seen such a destructive weak side defender since Ben Wallace in his prime or Birdman two seasons ago. Still needs a lot of work elsewhere. Didn’t do much offensively other than one nice post move against a d leaguer. Jump shot didn’t look good. He can also run the floor pretty well. Certainly a project, but the promise of this second rounder is off the charts. Up to him to fufill it.
Casspi- a little to out of control at the start with his drives but settled in and showed the game we loved at the start of the season. I don’t think Casspi will ever be a quality creater for himself other than in the post against smaller defenders. Just doesn’t have a great first step or great dribbling moves. He works best when someone has created him some space where he can shoot the 3 or drive and use all the tricks shots he has around the basket. Luckily the kIngs have guys who can set him up.
Donte- good game but nothing exceptional about it. Did show a nice mid range bank shot that wasn’t there last season. Still can get out of control at times

I thought Whiteside loped back on defense the majority of the time? We've seen more hussle from Hawes
Whiteside even had a foul called on him because the guard beat him to the paint with the ball and Whiteside ran over him.
With his rebounding and shot blocking, his lack of offense wont be the problem. He’s going to need to be a much better man defender if he’s going to break into the rotation.

David Thorpe is pretty good with his judgments.
I think after one game it’s a bit harsh.
I think my bigger issue is where is it best for Whiteside to develop? Thorpe probably saw the lack of fundamentals and checked off D-League. However will Whiteside really learn in D-League? He’ll block a ton a shots against outmatched players on raw talent alone which could actually stunt any development. I think you keep him on the bench and let him struggle against other bigs in practice and limited minutes. He’ll develop more with adversity, we already know he doesn’t conceptualize well. Anyways I think he’s pet project of Westphal or someone on the staff . . . the Kings did actually consider using a 1st round pick on him.
Give Whiteside a pair of D-League stints during the year,
perhaps when the Kings are on two of their longer road trips. The rest of the time, let him hang with the big club.
Right now, Whiteside’s biggest influence is on the defensive side of the ball, yet that is where his young game is full of holes. He’s not unlike Justin Williams. Williams could block shots and board with the best of ’em, but he regularly blew his defensive rotations, and ultimately wound up riding pine as a result.
Whiteside is going to need time to develop, but there is an awful lot to get excited about there if you are a Kings fan.

I agree with this
While I think a few games of PT will serve him well in the D league, I also think he needs to go against the top caliber of players to really improve his game. The coaching staff will likely have to be very patient with him but now is the time to let these guys develop even if it does sacrifice some W’s.

watched the first 3 quarters
1. cousins was more skilled than i thought. petrie is the man.
2. whiteside’s off the ball defense was impressive.
3. sloan was solid. good size for the one. solid handles. tough. was able to go where he wanted on the floor. wanted to see his jumper a bit more though.
4. casspi and greene were a bit out of sync, i thought. but they’re second year players so…
5. rice produced, but he’s a bit too frenetic for me.
6. thompson shot the ball nicely.
"When talent is roughly equal," said Westphal, "the competitive guys win. You have to have that in this league. Here's a perfect example: We (the Phoenix Suns) drafted Tim Perry and Dan Majerle the same year (1988). Now, if you get a stopwatch for down and back (baseline to baseline sprint), Tim Perry was faster than Dan Majerle. That's a fact. But if you had them race, Dan Majerle won. I can't explain it. Somehow, he had that drive, that fire, something inside him. If you have enough guys like that, your team starts winning again."
Thompson was ok, but I think Christmas looked to be a better defender.
I’ll hold off making my judgement for a few more games.

Sloan looked to shoot too much for me
Rice even more so.
I thought Casspi had a very solid first game after he shook off the early rust, a little D, a little outside shooting and he drove to the hole nicely a few times. He was the best player on the court.
DMC will get many many double doubles this season, he was the 2nd best player on the court.
Whiteside has got a lot of potential and is a great weakside defender in the half court but see HTs comment above about getting back down the court etc.

Sloan supposedly has a contract, but it's unknown if it's guaranteed
but Rice is looking for a job. And, in every game I’ve watched, unsigned guards and wings are putting up shots. Most of the assists are coming from 2nd year players with contracts, too.
I’m surprised about Sloan’s ballhandling. He was a 2 in college, and at times he’s looking better than Rice who was a Point. Rice seems to get trapped a lot and when the bigs show on the pick & roll, he doesn’t get by them every well. He just keeps dribbling to the side and they just stay with him and string out the play.

I have a correction to make
In a different thread, I said that NBA.com didn’t have the Kings/Lakers game tomorrow on the schedule to be televised. But, after scanning thru Comcasts NBA TV schedule for tomorrow night, I see that the KIngs/Lakers game in being televised at 10pm PST.

If he can get enough minutes... Whiteside definite rookie DPOY
I had Whiteside as my #1 center and I still do. He’s such a game changer. His timing on his blocked shots is just impeccable. Probably as good as anyone in the NBA right now.
He still needs to add lower body & abdominal strength. He’s raw in his footwork and rebounding and man-to-man defense.
Whiteside is a long ways away from being a center.
No size & no lower body strength, most NBA centers will back him down, or beat him to the post position that they want and he won’t be able to dislodge him. All of his blocks except for one came while he was the weakside defender. For now he’s a PF and it may be his best position, someone in the role of say Josh Smith.
He’s really not a wide body like DMC, it will be interesting to see how strong he gets over the next 3 to 4 years.
