Kings vs. Lakers, Summer League Game 2

Game 2 of the Kings' Vegas sojourn tips off at 5:30 PM PT. According to Jason Jones, Sylven Landesberg will start at shooting guard (replacing Ryan Thompson) and Omri Casspi will rotate into Donte Greene's small forward spot. The Lakers' VSL team is 0-2. Derrick Caracter should be a nice challenge for Boogie and SWAT. Otherwise, the Kings team is vastly superior at most positions.

Let's go Kings. Beat L.A.!

nice shot by cousins

"For five decades (and counting), these fans have been blessed with West, Baylor, Wilt, Kareem, Magic, Shaq and Kobe. Seven of the 15 best players ever. At some point, the gravy train will end. The Lakers will bottom out like the Knicks did last decade, submarined by bad moves, poor signings and unlucky drafts. Their fans will flee in droves. Jack will pass away. The buzz will be gone. That's how the NBA works -- in a 30-team league, you can't always get lucky, not even if you're a big-market team with deep pockets. I don't know if that day is three years off or 30, but it's coming." Bill Simmons

Derrick Caracter (83)

Here is my system’s comments on him:
6.6 FT per 40. High FG shooter at 56.7%. Good rebounder, scorer and steal rate. Below average block rate and FT%. Very high turnovers and his foul rate is very bad. Seems lazy on the defensive end and doesn’t move his feet or stay in front of the offensive player. Eager scorer on the offensive end but probably a defensive liability. Could be a poor man’s “Baby” Davis or Lawrence Funderburke.

wow thats a good pass by Cousins

DMC can pass like I wouldn’t have believed unless I saw it for myself.

Whiteside is probably going to be a good player in this league, but he has some work to do. He seems nervous and impatient, but I think that will work itself out with time.

by MDRennie on Jul 13, 2010 7:23 PM PDT reply actions

Strawberry showed some strong D and a nice shooting stroke.

Downey looks like that change of pace high speed guard we could use. Better handle than Sloan or Rice. But, I don’t think that the best options for the last 2 roster spots for the regular season, will necessarily come from our VSL squad.

When Donte isn’t bleeding from his nose or mouth, he plays pretty good. I’d put him right there neck & neck with Casspi for the race for the starting job. But, I don’t like seeing either one creating their own drive to the rim from outside the 3pt arc. I like to see more slashing to the rim off the Cuz double teams, and the guards getting them the ball just outside 15ft.

None of the SG’s seem to be that deadly outside shooter. Still waiting to see more Christmas but if the coaches aren’t going to play him, I’m guessing we won’t keep any of them. Have to see who gets invited to summer camp.

I thought Landesberg had a good game

Nothing too flashy other than being 1/2 of the Double Dunk, but he did a nice job passing the ball down low into DMC, moving the offense, and handling the ball when needed. His jump shot looked a little clunky, but I thought he showed a lot of potential as someone who could make the team and potentially play alongside Tyreke.

DMC was both impressive and not – some great plays and running the floor much better than he did at Kentucky, but also a lot of forces. Caracter also really bothered him, and he’s in for an adjustment in the NBA when he’s going up against guys his own size. I think he (and we) are going to need some patience this season.

I’ve always liked Chism, and I think he makes a better scrapper off the bench than Brockman. Bigger, stronger, great hands, can hit a jump shot, not afraid to come in and mix it up.

by nbrans on Jul 13, 2010 8:24 PM PDT reply actions

Sactown, are you having fun yet? As they say “you aint seen nothin yet”. Just wait till Boogie and his teammates get used to playing together and he learns the system. Can’t wait to see him with Tyreke. Enjoy every minute, you have a jewel.
I’ve seen Chism for 4 years. He’s a very good player. He always gives 100 per cent. It’s hilarious though, that he is trying to make it on Boogie’s team, they didn’t seem to care for each other very much this year when they played against each other. Ha ha. Chism is a great flopper, one of the best.
I’ve also seen Devan Downey for four years and he is very crafty. He’s not afraid to mix it up. Full steam ahead with him.

Still a lot of use

A) The team needs a vet for all their young players.
B) Whiteside and to some extent Cousins won’t be ready game one, so Sammy lets the team ease them in.
C) He’s a chip at the trade deadline with an expiring contract
D) If not traded his contract expiration helps pay for Landry’s new contract.

rather than us just giving it to them. Development is good and all that, but what better way to gauge if they are ready by them just flat out winning the spot from a vet?

Only two things would really limit Boogie’s and Whiteside’s PT are foul trouble and effectiveness. If Boogie & Whiteside are shooting lights out and/or lock down defending, they’ll stay in the game. If they are having troubles, they better/need to sit.

After two summer league games why is everyone ready to dump Brockman for Chism?

We all need to chill out a little bit. Chism was impressive tonight but I doubt he will be the rebounding pressence and overall badass that Brockman has proven to be against NBA competition.

Also just cause one guy (Christmas/Rice/Thompson) doesn’t get playing time in a game doesn’t mean anything. Landsburg didn’t play in the last game until the final three minutes. PW even said they would rather feature guards in games than split minutes for all of them each game.

Oh and Boogies is freaking amazing, I imagine his assist stats will go up when he is playing with better teamates and not on a summer league team. The key is that the instincts are there, and he is automatcially are best passing big man in the post. the likes of which we haven’t had since Vlade and CWebb.

Because I don't think Brock was particularly impressive against NBA competition

He got some rebounds and hustled, but what did he do that’s so impressive? Fans love him because who doesn’t like the 12th man who tries hard, but I’d prefer that the front office didn’t make decisions based on sentimentality. Chism is bigger, as strong, hustles, and can give you some offense too.

Good game by the youngsters.

Cousins is a lot more versatile then first advertised, he’s going to help the Kings immediately .

Whiteside is going to need some polishing if he wants to find minutes this season, but I like his upside and his 7,7 wingspan too.

Devan the dude looked much better than Sloan, I would really like to see the Kings take him into camp. The guy is quicker than greased lightning and has handles to.

I guess this sounds stupid but I would rather Sac keep Chism than Brockman. He has an all around better game. Seriously if Brockman continues to work on his jumper why would you like Chism more than the Brock Monster? He is tougher, a fan favorite, all around good guy, and perfect for the end of the bench. Chism has a good game but his game isn’t needed on this team. A guy like Brockman who we already know what he can do against NBA level talent is a better fit. You know what your getting from Jon, he comes in and changes the attitude of the game and the mentalitiy of the team.

Cuz is the real deal. My favorite play was his block in the 4th and took the dribbled the ball surprising well for an elephant while eating up the floor with 10 ft strides and then knocked the two guards spinning and made the bucket and 1. I think DMC does stuff he doesn’t even know he’s doing yet. His instincts are so good. His passing is so surprising and he seems to love to play. Two games down and I haven’t seen a red flag yet. Well, maybe one, he has to stop leading with his face.

by Bluejohn on Jul 14, 2010 12:58 AM PDT reply actions

One of my favorites wasn't the most exciting play, but

at the end of the 3rd, Cuz put up a short jumper in the paint with 2 guys on him and missed the shot. A 3rd Laker, I think it was Ebanks or Green, took the ball down the sideline, but Cuz raced back and got in front of him just over half court and stopped the ball. The Lakers got a shot up but missed and didn’t have time for a 2nd shot before the clock ran out.

I really liked how he never gave up on the play, even after making a bad decision on the shot selection. And, it probably kept the Lakers from getting the last shot of the quarter. Also, I really liked the Bowling Pin Play that started with a block.

I just started a Kings/NBA blog about a week ago. So far I’ve posted blogs about how the Kings need to sign J.J. Redick (a little stale now haha), the NBA’s need to establish a new CBA soon, and Miami’ outlook for next season. I’d really appreciate if everyone would check it out and commment no matter whether you think it sucks or I’m the next Ziller. Thanks guys
