Another Double-Double for DeMarcus Cousins Leads Kings Over Lakers

(Can't wait to use that headline in the regular season or, gulp, the playoffs. /shoots self with tranquilizer gun)

DeMarcus Cousins again dominated in Las Vegas, dropping 19/12 with three assists, two blocks and two steals on the Lakers Tuesday night. Patience was the name of the game, with Boogie reading the defense before reacting on most possessions. Cousins did have turnover problems again (5), though Paul Westphal, sitting in on the broadcast with the great Matt Winer and Steve Smith, noted that at least one travel call was likely a mistake. (It's not like NBA refs don't make bad traveling calls on occasion.) There was one bad outlet pass, but Cousins was largely creating his own offense most of the game. Some mistakes are expected.

The real thing which stood out, beyond Boogie's patience, was that he was the offense. He had 20 field goal attempts, twice as many as Donté Greene, who had the team's second-highest total. In addition, Cousins drew a trip to the line (plus another and-1), had those turnovers and three assists. Boogie had a hand in 40 percent of the Kings' possessions while on the floor. That's a huge, huge amount for any player, and especially a big man. And he delivered, though his shooting efficiency (19 points on 21 shots, 0.9 points a shot) wasn't fantastic. He's ready to soak up possessions, just as Tyreke Evans was ready to soak up possessions last year. Like Reke, Boogie is basically the opposite of "project player." He's ready to play.

Star-divide

The question with the big club -- other than how Cousins will look against Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum instead of Derrick Caracter and Courtney Sims -- is how effective Boogie will be when he isn't taking 20 shots a game. We saw a glimpse in Game 1, where Cousins had a somewhat smaller role. But when you add in Tyreke Evans and Carl Landry, that's a lot of downward pressure on DMC's offensive role. We'll see.

Elsewhere, Hassan Whiteside wasn't as bombastic as in Game 1, with just two blocks and one or two goaltends. Greene was more aggressive, and it showed in the box score (17 points). Omri Casspi took a real backseat to Cousins, Donald Sloan struggled and Sylven Landesberg had a solid performance in the starting role, effectively matching what Ryan Thompson did in Game 1 (13/4 for SL). Westphal said the team's looking at the five VSL guards for potential spots on the roster, even with Sloan signed. Thompson and Landesberg have performed the best; based on the defense Thompson played against Austin Daye Monday, I'd give him the slight edge right now.

Kings.com posted the full audio of Westphal's appearance, as well as audio interviews with Joe Maloof and Carl Landry.

As far as I'm concerned

Boogie isn’t supposed to fair that well against a Gasol or a Bynum this year. He is a rookie big, and we all know most bigs take longer to develop than smaller players. The fact that he is showing this much promise in aspects young bigs aren’t supposed to at this stage of development: free throw shooting, passing, creating offense, pretending to be a point guard (ok, we should try to discourage that last one…just pass the ball DeMarcus) should make Kings fans very happy regardless of his statistics vs. the established bigs this year. I know it makes me very excited, as it does most Kings fans with a pulse.

One of the announcers

in the replay mentioned that he looked like a guard out there. I think he has some “guard” game, in that he has quite an array of offensive moves. I didn’t watch the game so I don’t know how to consider those traveling calls (and there were a few in game 1 too).

I’m excited about Donte’s play as well, here’s to hoping he’ll show some consistency.

by DirtyDribblers on Jul 14, 2010 6:39 AM PDT up reply actions

on that one play everyone is talking about

he totally travelled. But he just slid his pivot foot a bit when he spun, and the refs really had it out for the kings vs the lakers

Agreed

As everyone virtually has said in the previous VSL game 1 thread, I love what I am seeing from both Cousins and Whiteside. I think Greene will take SF, with Casspi playing a few less minutes off the bench. So really that just leaves another guard that we need. Hopefully over the next few games someone will truly shine off Tyreke and Beno.

by Jeffa112 on Jul 14, 2010 6:43 AM PDT up reply actions

I agree

Bynum sucked for his first couple of years barring his injuries. Boogie is not going to be a 20-10 guy until he gets a few years to develop and moves up the hierarchy of the Kings.
I think the #1 option is Tyreke, #2 Landry, #3 Beno, after that it is wide open for someone to step up. Boogie could be the #4 by all-star break.

by g4y Vulture on Jul 14, 2010 1:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Bynum is not Boogie, and Boogie is not Bynum.

I wouldn’t set a cap on Boogie’s potential based on Bynum’s learning curve.

It will work itself out.

When the regular season comes, he’ll be able to rely on his best scoring moves with less possessions. What really has me excited is his ability to pass off the double and that he isn’t in love with his jumper.

And that's wassup.

It doesn’t matter either way. Phil Jackson has one of the worst summer league records ever. I think Don Nelson and the Golden state warriors have the highest summer league record which tells you all you need to know about summer league records.

Hater....

No one said a word about the record. I’m pretty sure all the discussion has been about Cousins and Whiteside.

what i've yet to see

is any go-to post moves that he likes to use. most good/great post players have 1 or 2 moves that they like to pound guys with repeatedly until the defender can stop it, then they switch it up and use the defender’s overplaying against them. lot of double-teams on DMC last night so he didn’t get many 1:1 opportunities but i’m curious if he’s got those go-to moves yet.

it’s great to have a variety of options in the post but that doesn’t equate to a great post player. spencer for example has a ton of post moves but he rarely executed on them because he could never make up his mind what he wanted to do and he didn’t have the strength to pull them off against NBA defenders.

Caracter did pretty well against DMC the post i thought. just looking ahead to DMC having to go up against Bynum, Pryz or Kaman; i don’t see DMC having much success against those guys in the post nor would I double-team him at this point if I was the opposing team.

Go-to

Lacking a go-to to move after two summer league games? Really? I don’t want to see one move, I want to see a variety of moves, and that is just what DMC has showed us. I did not realize he could play so effectively away from the hoop. He has made mistakes but so far he looks fantastic.

By the way, his go to move is a power dunk, and a little flip shot over the left shoulder. Power dribble, body defender, create space, score and repeat. Easy-breezy.

If you listen to the most recent interview, Cousins is already talking about improving “little things” like where to post up his man, too low to the baseline, too deep off the block, and working to correct these little nuances. When did we ever hear about Spencer Hawes talk like this? Not a criticism of Spencer, but just a point of comparison. DMC is more refined as a post player after two practice games than Spencer in two years.

I want to see Cousins get in better physical shape. But as far as basketball ability, he is off the charts talented. Let’s enjoy it.

And while Pryz and Kaman are better than anyone in summer league, the advantage Cousins will have is he can use quickness, handles, and power. This is what Carl Landry does. He uses brute strength and a strong first step to get where he wants to go. So I am not worried about the defense. Cousins has skills to take any defender.

Yes, Its laughable to still be talking about basic skills from this guy

Speaking to Cousins physical condition...

I am hoping that the early success he is experiencing in the summer league, along with all the encouragement and support that he is receiving from his new teammates, Tyreke, Donte, Hassan, will spur him on to getting into better condition.

If you want to be your best, you have to do your best, otherwise you are only second rate.

by Slam_Dunk on Jul 14, 2010 9:02 AM PDT up reply actions

Agree about the body part.

And, since I just now learned that you are female like me (courtesy of one of the fanposts) I think it’s safe to say that we are very qualified to speak about the bodies of men. ; )

Also, I will take Cousins over Bynum, that is no problem for me. (and I was raised a Laker fan, btw, so that should also count for something)

Like someone else mentioned up thread, DeMarcus may struggle a bit against the likes of Bynum early on, and he certainly isn’t in the phenomenal physical shape that Bynum is (I love DeMarcus to death, he’s just darling and an incredibly skilled basketball player, but he needs to get more toned for NBA play, he simply must), but if I were a betting girl (and I am) well, once he gets a couple of games under his belt, skill-wise, I will take DMC over Bynum any day and have no problem seeing him holding his own. Looking forward to the matchup between Bynum and DeMarcus, actually, and to be candid, I will be rooting for DMC. (shh, ya’ll won’t tell will you? : ))

DeMarcus’ rate of improvement last year was incredible. From the first of the year to the end of the year, his game evolved dramatically and quickly, and I realize that these summer leagues games are just basically glorified practice, but from what I can tell as evidenced by these first two summer league games his skills are picking up right where he left off in college (the walking-talking double-double machine).

Ya’ll played 82 games last year, right? Well, he played 38 games in college and got 15 (I’m pretty sure on that, but it might actually be more??) double-doubles in that time. What is that, like roughly 40% of the time, which would translate to about 32 games with double-doubles for ya’ll in the coming season?

You might want to check the above math for accuracy as math is not really my strongest area, but my main point being — I realize that he is only going to be an NBA rookie this year, but shooting for a good number of double-doubles, i.e. stellar performances from him really isn’t out of the realm of possibility as far as I’m concerned as he is more than capable and while he might struggle right off the bat with the likes of Laker competition, there are plenty of other NBA teams/players who will most definitely struggle against him.

using a variety of post moves isn't a bad thing

and while some post players had a specific “go to” move (i.e. the dreamshake for Hakeem) other like Kevin McHale I think half the time didn’t know which of a half-dozen moves they were planning to go with until they did it. I suspect we’ll see him refine his set once he starts playing against higher level competition.

And let’s face it, as has been noted, he’ll be a 20yr old rookie, so expecting him to dominate Bynum, Kaman, etc. out of the gate would be a tad unrealistic, even for us ;)

by Sam Pandora on Jul 14, 2010 8:36 AM PDT reply actions   1 recs

I agree.

I like to see Cousins mixing it up, getting his feet, figuring out what works at this level before he falls in love with one particular move.

Early last season, Hawes was in love with his hook shot, and it was a disaster. Let DeMarcus develop a variety of weapons. It will serve him well against his extremely varied opponents.

This is what Wikipedia says..

On August 25, 2008, he was traded to the Houston Rockets for Sean Singletary,4 but was waived on October 24. At the end of that month, he joined Italian club Fortitudo Bologna.5

In January 2010, Strawberry joined the Reno Bighorns of the NBA D-League.6

Strawberry was included in the Los Angeles Lakers 2010 Summer League roster.

That 07-08 stint with Albuquerque looked fantastic.

It was only 5 games but look at his stats per 36!

53% FG, 43% 3PT, 2.8 AST, 4.2 TO, 27.6 PTS

Then in his 09-10 stint with Reno was still impressive, He improved on his point guard skills by reducing his turnovers and getting his assists up. His scoring suffered but at least he was learning.
46% FG, 35% 3PT, 7.2 AST, 2.4 TO, 16.9 PTS

My conclusion….He is worth taking a flyer, I would invite him to training camp.

Kings VSL going well except...

it’s beginning to look as though the pooch was screwed signing Sloan to a 1 year contract. They keep trotting him out onto the court but somebody evidently overlooked the obvious. The guy is NaPG. Both Downey and Rice, when given a chance have shown they can run the point much better. It’s painful to watch Sloan as he struggles to bring the ball up the court.

Sloans transition from a 2 to a PG, reeks of Douby for me.

He’s not a bad ball handler, and at times looked better than Rice who was a PG in college. But, I’m not impressed with Sloans court vision or defense. And, like you was more impressed with Strawberry than anyone in the Kings backcourt.

The best setups for our frontcourt players seem to be coming from other frontcourt players and not the guards which is extremely upsettting to me. Although Downey made some good interior passes.

Sloan hasn’t shown much yet. I am not sure why a player would sign a non-guaranteed deal now, because it limits his options to latch onto another team or oversees for guaranteed dollars. I'm definitely on the Downey wagon now

He’s the change of pace guard we sorely need.

As ESPN’s Zach Harper wrote:

With the Kings’ offense slow to get started and the Lakers packing the paint against a DeMarcus Cousins-centered attack, the Kings turned to Devan Downey to get something going. You may remember Downey as the scrappy point guard who led South Carolina to an upset of No. 1-ranked Kentucky in late January. Now he’s the point guard who found a way to penetrate into the Lakers’ summer league defense and get his team into a winning offensive flow.

Downey’s biggest downside — his size (5-foot-9) — is also probably what allows him to be so effective in a setting like this. There’s no true zone defense to prevent him from driving to the basket. Teams can pack it in against him, but they still have to abide by man-to-man principles for the most part. Downey capitalizes by finding holes in the defense that only quick, small point guards can get into. And when he gets deep into the defense, he makes things happen for his team.

“Once you get in that paint, it’s going to suck everybody in,” Kings summer league coach Mario Elie said." And it’s going to enable our players to get open looks."

The open looks were created with the penetration and good spacing. Donte Greene, Cousins and Wayne Chism benefited from the defense being taken out of position. Downey gave the Kings energy on both ends of the floor and the Kings turned a 9-0 deficit to start the game into a comfortable win. Downey was a pest to the Lakers’ guards and once again used his size — or lack thereof — to his advantage. He annoyed the Lakers with three steals and got the Kings going in transition.

Downey can’t change his size to fit the mold of what NBA front offices wish him to be. But he can find ways to make it work. Tuesday, he made it work.

Let us usher in the era of Reke DMC!

by Shizzo on Jul 14, 2010 5:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Cousins is looking solid

I especially like his outside scoring ability. While the guys who were covering him last night were basically small power forwards like Landry, he was still quick enough to get a step on them and then overpower them with his inside game. Again, we’ll see what he looks like with the big boys, but his quickness should be an asset. He also displays a lot of patience when looking to create his shot, and the passing looks real smooth.

Chism also looked very good and also showed a good shooting touch outside. He looks like a keeper.

Donte shot and played very well, but Casspi was a turnover machine and would not be faring too well right now if he was an undrafted rookie trying to make the club. He also missed a bunch of free throws and got dunked on major.

Sloan calmed down in the second half, but Downey was very impressive. Super quick and tough despite his size. Ran the ballclub like a pro.

Landesberg also impressed with that double dunk with Whiteside and other inside play. Haven’t really seen him shoot much outside, but he moves well without the ball in the interior.

Best line of the night was when Caracter blocked a drive by Donte and Matt Winer said Caracter “read that like a comic book.”

"I know we certainly gave up a lot to get him, but we do have other players on the perimeter who we can plug in. We haven’t had anybody who we feel is a go-to guy in the post. So we gave up a lot to get a lot, and we’re real excited about adding Carl." - Paul Westphal

Not exactly small PFs. plus he was double teamed much of the night.

Caracter really impressed me

Would be surprised if he doesn’t make the Los Angeles team. He’s like Ibaka with a semblance of an offensive repertoire.

Downey is like a passing Nate Robinson with a less consistent jumper

His speed is incredible, He can just blow by you without using a screen and set up an open shot. His penetration all game led to kickouts for 3s.

Whiteside

One thing I noticed on him is that he doesnt have good hands, he struggles to catch fast passes. However, I still would like to see him post-up more, his length makes it very tough to block his shot.

Cousins looked fantastic. Probably 85% of the plays that I loved involved him in some way.

I’m starting to think Donte and Omri are doing this on purpose. Monday was supposed to be Donte’s night, and Omri outperformed/nearly outperformed him, and yesterday was supposed to be Omri’s night, and Donte came out on top. I have five bucks on Omri coming out and playing better tonight.

I'm giving Donte some slack for the first game.

Playing after getting smashed in the face. Playing with your nose full of gause and having blood run down the back of your throat so badly that you have to keep spitting it into your jersey, can be somewhat distracting.

Small nitpick

But it was 19 and 12 not 19 and 14 according to the boxscore. Still very impressive.

Here comes Debbie

I’m not impressed with the guard play so far, Downey a little bit but in general no. I don’t like it that our SF’s have to create their own drive to the rim from outside the 3 pt arc. They’re not guards and can’t get to the rim with the speed of guards, and while it can be done successfully, it gives the defense too much time to react.

Love everything about Cuz’s game, but he isn’t the defensive answer for the backcourt not being able to stay in front of their man. Guards are still getting into the paint and finishing, which is one of PW’s complaints about Spencer. Two games, I know, but it still seems to be a weakness in his game. Maybe because he played with Wall, he hasn’t seen this before and just needs time to learn to anticipate moving out when the guards come off a screen set by Cuz’s man. We’ll see.

But, I can’t help feeling that I’m going to be sitting around hours before each game this season, staring at the clock waiting for the game to start.

DMC
Love everything about Cuz’s game,

He has all the talent he needs to become an All-Star, I’m already convinced. Whether he puts that together with the work required and the drive required is I think still an open question.

Funny thought

I’m pretty sure that team we fielded last night could beat the Timberwolves. It would be a good game anyway.

A truely skilled big man

I did’nt watch to much college ball this year. All i heard about DMC before the draft was how big he was and he could board.I know it,s only 2 summer games but WOW!!This guy is soooo skilled it’s scary. He does’nt use his size to back guy’s down and get to the rim he uses his amazing footwork. He has a nice baseline spin that reminds me of James Worthy. He is the most polished big man to come out since Duncan.I can’t believe he fell to 5 teams will regret that for years.Minnesota fans are gonna be sick after tonight. The passing is such a bonus yeah he shot 20 attempts but he seems very unselfish.I can’t believe he is only 19.I can’t wait til the season starts and every team relizes they made a huge mistake on this kid.GO KINGS

DMC's jumpshot and passing ability are what impress me the most; he said he watches/watched a lot of tape

on pau gasol so maybe he learned a thing or two on how to rebound like a demon, pass and shoot like a guard; it really should be interesting to see how he matches up with Gasol.
