Another Ugly Game in Vegas, But Kings Win
The Kings went to 4-1 at the Vegas Summer League after a 76-75 win against the Bulls. Sacramento's first and only lead came with 1.8 seconds left in the game, as Tyrese Rice hit a free throw following a Bulls turnover, which itself followed a ballsy Omri Casspi three for the tie. Casspi led the Kings with 22 points.
DeMarcus Cousins finished with 10/7 on 3/15 shooting. He had his worst game by far, looking completely gassed and being dominated by Samardo Samuels, who went undrafted out of Louisville. The kid is exhausted.
Post your impressions in the comments. Just one more VSL game left.

Cousins is completely exhausted
His conditioning is definitely something he needs to work on, but 5 games in 6 nights is a whole lot of minutes with little time to recover, especially for a post guy who plays as physically as he does. He’ll be alright.
I like Ryan Thompson and he came up with a clutch defensive play, though I worry that while it seems like he could be an okay bench guy in the NBA, he’s not exactly the type of bench guy the Kings really need. He’s much more of a slasher than a shooter/ballhandler.
And that brings me to Christmas, who showed some good defense, ballhandling, slashing and shooting. I think Christmas and Landesberg are more of the types of players you would want alongside Reke because of the outside shooting and ballhandling. But we’ll see.
The PGs were overmatched again. Rice looked the best, but none of them have been particularly inspiring overall.
Whiteside looked really good offensively, though he still falls asleep on defense when he’s not trying to block his shot. His court awareness has a looooong way to go, and he needs to get his hands up.
And Casspi had a really solid effort, with some clutchness in the end.
It does dampen some of the enthusiasm for Cousins
Yes, his game is NBA ready. He’s ready to deploy double doubles in bunches BUT his conditioning does need work. He was a big kid in high school and at Kentucky they didn’t play him a ton of minutes. He’s been working hard on conditioning this summer but I don’t know if it’s fair to expect him to play huge minutes as a rookie the way Tyreke did. He has the rest of the summer to get his wind up, but is that enough time to go from a 26mpg player to a 34mpg player?
by Kevin Conroy on Jul 17, 2010 8:16 PM PDT up reply actions
DMC didn't even average 24 MPG at UK.
So I don’t know where the 26 MPG came from. Unless you’re talking about VSL.

Who cares if he averaged 24 at Kentucky. The NCAA is a 40 minute game, the NBA is 48 and he’s in Sacramento now. Borrow Charles Oakley’s calculator and do the math: 26mpg.

Cousins is better doing this now than later
I would rather he get worked on really hard and be tired right now than during the regular season. Cousins obviously needs to get in better shape to play bigger minutes. However, this year he will be okay. I expect him to play close to the same amount he played in UK and increase slowly and steadily.
He has a huge advantage in that we have plenty of frontcourt depth, so if he gets tired than we can place someone else in their. It will take the course of the year before he can play those 34MPG seasons IMO.
I think SL has been about one thing for Cousins: To wear him down and see how he would react.
He’s worn down and we’ve seen how he’s reacted. Some good things, and some bad things.

Now the question is will he decide he does not like feeling exhausted and work to get in shape to keep playing.
Tomorrow won't settle that question either.

I think
this is exactly what the coaching staff wanted to show him. Play him hard, show him what NBA conditioning is all about. Now it is time for Cousins to realize this and go back to working on it
And also possibly show him
why he would be coming off the bench this year. So that he can be eased into the long and windy NBA season. I’m starting to think this is specifically why they brought in Sammy D, to take the pressure off of DMC. With all of the conditioning problems we had last year, I think they are trying to avoid that this year, and then when Sam’s contract is up, Cousins will be ready for the grunt of the minutes, it all is starting to make sense to me now!

They brought Dalembert in as the defensive stopper in the paint
something that Cousins hasn’t shown he can be, Yet. And, that’s the main reason, DMC will be coming off the bench when the season starts.

I see Dalembert and Landry as the starters, and JT won’t be the odd man out that many are portraying him to be. On normal nights, I see Landry getting 30-36, Dalembert 24-28, JT 18-24, Cousins 18-24. Scraps for Brockman and Whiteside, unless someone is hurt.
Conditioning is going to be a huge deal for Cousins in his rookie year, so I would be amazed to see him log Tyreke-like minutes.
SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!
Agreed
Although the minutes you project for JT would be far below what he’s gotten to this point.
I don’t see JT playing much center as Dalembert and Cousins should eat up most of those minutes. So if Landry averages 30 minutes, that leaves JT with 18 a game at the PF spot.
Injuries happen, though, so things will probably work out.

A couple of things I noticed live that people watching on tv might of missed.
DeMarcus
1) complains about everything and thinks he gets fouled on each play.
2) asked to come out at midway in the 4th clearly gassed only to waved away by Elle.
3)at one point at a called time out, he headed straight for the end of the bench and completely ignored everyone and sulked till he was put back in at the start of the fourth.

Uh yes...I AM that smart...I understood that perfectly.
However all I did was bet on two of the three “thirds” of the board. Like, they have a bet on 1-12, 13-24 and 25-36. And if the last number was say, 4, I would bet on the 13-24 and 25-36. Because the probabilities of it landing on a really low number twice is (hopefully) a tiny bit lower. Anyway I only lost 4 times in two and a half hours.
It’s pretty easy to think of, I think people don’t do it because you win slow. And gamblers are probably not patient people? I only won half of what I bet cause it was 3-1 odds on those.

I have noticed
But I don’t worry about him complaining on the calls because a lot of players do. Another thing here is that the spotlght is on him at all times here. When the season starts and Tyreke is on the court with him and the other big guys than I think he will kind of sink in and the immaturity will start turning into a mature strong basketball player who loves the game. I am going to join you in Vegas next year for this event, it was fun being able to watch the games.
Immaturity
1) JT has this same problem, despite being several years older and having 2 seasons of NBA experience.
2) He lacks the current conditioning, and asked out as to not hurt the team. Elie kept him in as a further test.
3) Given his performance in the first three quarters, he was probably frustrated. Per the predraft statements people were making, he should have exploded at Elie and been a distraction.
You see him as immature, as advertised. I see very little to be concerned about.

This isn't the last 2 years.
Cousins doesn’t need to play 40 minutes a night. We have a legitimate starting center now, not Spencer Hawes. He’s got months to get himself in better condition, and even when he does, he’s not going to play so many minutes that he can’t do back-to-back games.
Very little mention of Dalembert since the draft, but that’s the guy who is going to make Petrie look smart this year.

Good point.
Its not like we have to rush Cousins into the starting lineup and play him big minutes. If we just slowly ease him in to the NBA, it could pay dividends for us later.

Mixed Reaction
Need and desire are two different things. The Kings, with 25 wins last year, need a lot. So I’d disagree with the sentiment that we don’t need a potential ROY candidate to accomplish anything. We need everything. So being able to physically accomplish adequate playing time while not wearing down, seems like a modest, but necessary goal.
Nevertheless, he won’t be required to play such minutes because Dalembert is the guy that will make Petrie look smart, as you describe.
Bé foréwarnéd: I am a mémbér of StR Groupthink méntality.
The Kings, with 25 wins last year, HAD a Rookie of the Year.
I like to look at things realistically, and I see us in the lottery one more year. But I’d still rather have 47 wins and Cousins finish 7th in ROY voting than another 25 win season and another Kings player as ROY.
Rocks are free, and slingshots easily stolen.
I am also partial to this thing you call reality
and within this reality we call life, DMC is well within the possibility of obtaining ROY. That’s not homerism, that’s not optimism, that’s fact. The realistic chances of that happening? Probably less that John Wall, but greater than Ekpe Udoh.
Nevertheless, the Kings winning 25 games and having the ROY, doesn’t make your perspective any more “realistic”. Need is still paramount. And we need everything given a 25 win season. I also think we will end up in the lottery next year. Your point is….?
Bé foréwarnéd: I am a mémbér of StR Groupthink méntality.
Same as it was 4 hours ago.
His conditioning isn’t that important, because we have a quality player at his position. The same could not be said for Evans last year. Evans had to play a ton of minutes. Cousins doesn’t. Cousins vying for ROY isn’t necessarily in the best interests of the team.
I’ll repeat this again in the morning, because I like to help.
Rocks are free, and slingshots easily stolen.
True. Reke is an anomaly in that he didn't really hit the rookie Wall.
But, I suspect it is easier for guards to not hit the wall than it is for big men.
Especially Cousins, who seems to be hitting the rookie wall during summer league. LOL. I love the big man, but damn…he’s sweating so much out there and looking fatigued already!

Reke got a break mid-season
He was out several games because of the concussion and had time to rest up. So, I think the rookie wall thing was avoided. He did admit to being fatigued, but he is in insanely high physical condition as well so maybe the break didn’t matter. Kind of thought it did.
I didn't major in Common F-cking Sense, but ...
Just one more thing I'd add to your realism
(the Rockets wrapped up a couple days ago so I’ve been watching Cousins and Wall – I might have a small NBA problem)
so my point – beware the rookie big man whistle also this year. Cousins may be complaning now about not getting calls, but he’s going to be whistled for breathing. Conditioning may be less an issue than fouls. Dalembert may be handy after all.

The foul thing is the real concern about DMC's minutes.
I can’t remember the exact numbers, but his minutes in college were limited because of fouls and not fatigue.
I didn't major in Common F-cking Sense, but ...
Maybe, but someone here already pointed out that there was a lot of talent on his team
So, fouls, conditioning and just having Orton on the team probably limited his minutes. He’s only had 27 fouls thru 5 games in SL, with 10 coming in that one game, so that’s really not that bad. But, it’s not the NBA either, so we’ll have to see.
I agree with Section (above) that Cuz is going to see fewer minutes and will be coming off the bench, so conditioning and level of talent might not be as challenging.

Not worried about DMC at all
5 games averaging 30 minutes in 6 days, plus practices. Banging every game and being the focus of the offense. NBA players get tired on back to backs. This is absolutely to be expected and shouldn’t dampen any of the enthusiasm he has generated. This says far less about his shape than it does about how exhausting summer league is. DMC has blown away my expectations. And yes I am aware it is Summer League.

agreed. Now if only he were perfect...
What else can the guy do? I like his emotion, it is part of his personality. The kid is not Tim Duncan. His performance has been inconsistent but he has skills to burn. He is 19 and has a target on his back. Would anyone trade this kid? I asked around at VSL who were the best attractions to the people that were there all week – unanimously it was Wall and Cousins.
As for expectations of RoY – I think that is unreasonable at this point. I look for him to be 1st team All-Rookie. Maybe he will beat out Tyreke for Rookie-Soph MVP (though a two year in a row MVP crown at the game would be kinda kool for Havoc, and no, I don’t think Tyreke will quite make it to the big game, but I wouldn’t be surprised. DeMarcus
A lot of his fouls are conditioning fouls – too slow to get to his spots and move his feet defensively. I like fire but I think DeMarcus’ frustration is more mopey and self-oriented which is natural since he’s 19. DeMarcus wasn’t really elated with the amazing comeback nor does he get excited on the defensive side. Being so big, young, and high profile (a little like Shaq), his body language and frustrated face are going to get even more negative attention from officials than JT’s whiny face . Samuels clearly wanted to prove something on him this game and did.
DeMarcus has gotten away with size and being lazy on defense and Whiteside erasing his mistakes and gambles with help rejections. Against skilled and veteran bigs, he’s going to get owned going that route although Dalembert will help if Cousins plays 4. Makes me realize that Calipari did well to limit his minutes and force him to keep his big butt down load. Cousins was harassed and overfouled every game and kept his head for the most part. DeMarcus really has amazing outside touch and passing that can make him special but I hope he doesn’t turn into C. Webb settling for the elbow jumper.
I don’t see Greene as being the shooter that we need for a 2. Hopefully Cisco will come back to form.

Hmm...
Cousins was guarding a guy that was 40 or so pounds lighter and smaller, quicker, than him right? A PF when he is a true C. I don’t see Cousins playing best at PF. He is a C and should be playing that position. Not guarding PFs. I also don’t think that Calipari limited his minutes. Cousins had a lot of fouls and that limited his minutes.

Of course Casspi was big down the stretch and especially hitting that last three. One player who also was instrumental in the Kings come from behind win was Tyrese Rice. The setup play for Casspi’s three and then his fast break and clutch free throw won the game.

Nice game for Casspi
And nice to see him back to stroking the three. That’s what the Kings really need out of him and Donte: outside shooting, solid D, fewer bonehead mistakes, energy.
"I know we certainly gave up a lot to get him, but we do have other players on the perimeter who we can plug in. We haven’t had anybody who we feel is a go-to guy in the post. So we gave up a lot to get a lot, and we’re real excited about adding Carl." - Paul Westphal
Great game for him.
If you want to be your best, you have to do your best, otherwise you are only second rate.
