Bucks are close to acquiring Jon Brockman in sign and trade with Kings for Darnell Jackson and a future 2nd round pick.
Jackson's contract is fully unguaranteed for the 2010-11 season.

And actually, it makes my dilemma worse
My teams were Sac, Miami, OKC, Phoenix and I was trying to decide between Chicago and Milwaukee. But Phoenix could be on the cusp since I’m not sure they’ll be all that good. That way I could pick both Milwaukee and Chicago. But, the Suns have Nash and Dragic. God damn it, it’s so hard! (TWSS!)
You’d think I’d have more pressing concerns in regard to moving to the Middle East, but really as long as I have basketball and an X-Box I don’t really give a shit about the more important details.

This gets Brock more money
The S&T is really just a formality – the Bucks were over the cap and the only way they could pay Brock more than the minimum was through a S&T. Kings get a look at Darnell Jackson (who is decidedly enh) and a second rounder (we’ll see what the protections are).
Most important is that it gets Brock to a better situation. He wasn’t going to have a role on the Kings, so they did right by him.

Yeah, true
By taking on Jackson we just spared Milwaukee from having to use a trade exception to take on Brock’s salary.
Trade exception?
They aren’t under the cap so they wouldn’t be able to just take him outright, would they?
#vfettkefordraft
The Bucks could have taken him outright using a trade exception in a S&T
The Bucks are over the cap, but according to the ESPN trade machine they have a $1.75 million exception from a Francisco Elson trade. So theoretically the Bucks could have sent an exception in the amount of Brock’s salary up to $1.75 million to the Kings in exchange for a signed Brock.
Instead, the Bucks sent Jackson instead, which preserves their trade exception for later and reduces their salary total. That’s probably the consideration that netted the Kings the 2nd Rounder.
That has to be correct,
because Darnell Jackson is horrible. I guess now they can keep another player from the summer league team. I am not sure how impressive Sloan has been. Maybe Rice, RT, Chism, or Landesberg. I am leaning toward Landesberg.
We will miss ya Brockness!
I like Christmas
along with all the players you just mentioned, Sloan has been very meh

Yep
The Kings weren’t going to pay $1 million to keep him. At least they got a potential second rounder (depending on conditions) out of it. They wouldn’t have matched an offer sheet for this price (assuming it’s in excess of $1M).
Do why not grab CDR or Delfino?
Bucks are loaded on the wings. We really could use a little more quality wing depth. Darnell Jackson? Bleh, whatever. I’m sure he gets waived. I’d rather have CDR than their 2nd rounder.
Of course you'd rather have CDR than their 2nd rounder
So would the Bucks. When you guys think of NBA trades you can’t just take into account what you would want for your team. You have to take into account both teams, and also reality.

AND he’s a headcase I mean sure New Jersey wasn’t the best situation last year, but he was basically banished from the team.

If the Bucks didn't want to part with CDR or Delfino
They didn’t have to. I doubt signing Jon Brockman is such a make-or-break proposition for them that they were going to give up too much to make it happen. Seems like they were willing to give up a few minor pieces, but if it got to complicated or if they had to give up too much there was no reason for them to go overboard for a bench guy.
And from the Kings’ perspective, they could scuttle it just to scuttle it or take what’s reasonable to get Brock more money and a better situation. They did the right thing.

This is a good point.
It is good business from that end. That’s also why Petrie isn’t super picky on handing out MLE deals to players like Beno. It means that maybe a better talented player down the road might sign here because he knows he will get his money.

Look at it this way
1) Brock Ness Monster nickname made Brock way more popular and marketable
2) Brockman’s value probably inflated for an end-of-bench-guy in part due to popularity
3) That extra value over his actual production probably contributed to the Kings getting a (possibly highly conditional) 2nd Round pick out of this
If I were you I would be taking complete credit for the 2nd Rounder. Even if it ends up being used on Patrick Ewing Jr.’s future son.

The NBA Front Office pays part of a veterans minimum salary.

The league pays anything above what the 2nd year Min Salary would be
Here’s #11 from Coon’s:
When a player has been in the NBA for three or more seasons, and is playing under a one-year, ten-day or rest-of-season contract, the league actually reimburses the team for part of his salary – any amount above the minimum salary level for a two-year veteran. For example, in 2005-06 the minimum salary for a two-year veteran is $719,373, so for a ten-year veteran, with a minimum salary of $1,138,500, the league would reimburse the team $419,127. Only the two-year minimum salary is included in the team salary, not the player’s full salary. They do this so teams won’t shy away from signing older veterans simply because they are more expensive when filling out their last few roster spots.
So, if the Kings were to resign May for the Min for a 4 yr player $915K they would only actually have to pay him the 2 yr player Min $854K and the league pays the $61K difference.
Also, a player only has to be on a NBA roster for 1 day to gain tenure for that season.

I think we are overrating Brockman
He’s an okay, but very one-dimensional player. So is Darnell Jackson. Jackson was a four-year player at Kansas and is built like Reggie Evans. He’s a little raw, but he wouldn’t be playing much this year anyway. In exchange for swapping Brockman for a guy with a non-guaranteed contract that also wouldn’t play much, we get a 2nd-round pick. Seems fair to me. I think Delfino was shooting a bit too high in the first place.

But we used the 38th pick on Brockman.
If Milwaukee continues to get in the playoffs (which they probably will), it automatically makes sure that the 2nd round pick we get from them is lower than 38th.
Is Darnell Jackson worth trading down for?
This.
This really
wasn’t a “trade”. Brockman was looking for more money than the Kings were willing to pay an end of the bench guy. So, chances are, Brockman was gone anyway…so the Kings got a second round pick out of it – something they wouldn’t have got if/when Brock walked.

You do also realize, elfboy, that Nessie was the 6th big in the rotation.
The NBA is a league where if you have 4 quality bigs, and the Kings definitely do, that’s a luxury. The Kings have 5 potential quality bigs.

Good for Jon
He would not have played any minutes and deserves better. Good to see things were done that are good for him. The one thing I will say for Petrie is that he does right by his players.
He sent Sergio to the perfect situation under Dantoni, Martin to a former coach who he played well for, and now Brockman to somewhere that he is likely to get more play time.

This sucks
This trade does absolutely nothing for us as far as I can see. When you look at the “minor” deals that get done by Sam Presti all the time this just seems like such a yawner. I understand the plan. I am all for it but you mean to tell me there isn’t 1 deal or player out there that actually helps this team & follows the plan? Come on.
The Dalembert trade was perfect at the time imo. Now Petrie has to pull something out to get us a shooter. Wake me up when it happens.

This is not a trade
as much as it is a gesture by the Kings org to Brockman.

Still gotta 2nd rounder. Could turn into a similar type player as Brockman later on, or another role-player.
Pretty good deal.

Definitely
Let’s not forget that the Kings DID extend the qualifier offer to Brockman and he chose not to take it. This is a good deal for both parties. Don’t know why some don’t see it as such

wasn't I just talking with you yesterday about whether I would be happy for Brockman if he got a contract elsewhere?

With.
Because Mancakes gave us so much heart and passion on the floor — he just made it so easy to fall in love with the new direction Kings. And he symbolized what we wanted for this team — to get a little respect and to give a whole lot of hurt.

Great guy and all the nick name fun time aside but,
I bet even Jon is surprised that his 2nd pro contract isn’t coming from Europe.
Seriously.

I'm surprised at how little respect Brockman gets here
He’s going to carve out a nice career as a solid role player, and go far beyond the burn he got with us. He’s made a career of proving the naysayers wrong, and he’s going to do it again.
Brockman knows he’s better than an end of bench guy, and he also knows he’s an NBA player and will be for a long time.
"I know we certainly gave up a lot to get him, but we do have other players on the perimeter who we can plug in. We haven’t had anybody who we feel is a go-to guy in the post. So we gave up a lot to get a lot, and we’re real excited about adding Carl." - Paul Westphal

A little premature aren’t we. More like, “he’s made a back up role on one of the worst teams in the NBA into more than a qualifying offer out of it”.

On a per minute basis
He’s one of the best rebounders in pro basketball. He also doesn’t turn the ball over. He’s a scrapper and fighter and energy guy who does the little things that don’t show up in the box score.
He was also a major part of the 35-point comeback win over the Bulls. I’d call that a pretty nice accomplishment.

I am missing something
Or the Kings now MUST spend ~3 million more on the payroll this year – just to make it to the minimal salary, 75% from the cap (otherwise they just will have to divide them between currently signed players)?
3 million is not a “some guy from the summer league” salary. Solid and proven guard can be contracted with only this budget.
Oh, the future looks so bright.
Did you count Whiteside?

The team salary is calculated at the end of the season.
The Kings can be $20M under the cap, and trade for some players that bring them to $1 over the min at the trade deadline in February.
But, all teams are required to carry 13 players (12 active and one inactive). The active list may drop to 11 for up to 2 weeks. And, any players sent to the D-League are placed on the inactive list.
So, head count is more important than the team salary prior to the end of the season.

Yes
It will be a sad day when he leaves. He certainly was a fan favorite, and good things generally happened when he played, particularly early in the season.
But Brockman will probably be going to a better situation with more PT for a contender, so it’s a good move for him.

Yes, better situation, in more ways than one.
A player involved in a s&t must be given a 3 yr contract minimum. And, even tho the last 2 years do not have to be guaranteed, it would give Brockman good trade value should things not work out with the Bucks.
