Report: Antoine Wright to Sign 1-Year Deal With Kings

Antoine Wright will soon sign a one-year deal with the Kings, according to Dallas Morning News columnist Tim Cowlishaw.

Wright, 26, played in Toronto last year, starting 10 games amid 67 appearances and averaging about 20 minutes a game. He is not the shooter you are looking for: his career three-point shooting percentage is barely over 30 percent. He plays the wing positions.

He's known primarily as a defender, although he played for one of the worst defensive teams in the league last year. He does seem to have had a positive effect on Toronto's defense while in the game, however.

They seem pretty similar overall

Ime’s a better shooter and has better overall stats. However, Wright’s younger. We’ll probably find out a little more tomorrow when Ziller posts some defensive stats from Synergy Sports.

"Younger" doesn't do anything for me with a guy that probably has no future with the team anyways

If you can’t tell, I’m quite fond of Ime, warts and all, so I’m a little ticked if we grabbed this guy for some reason instead of re-signing The Ninja.

Perimeter Shooting

Wright’s not as bad as a jump shooter as some might think. He’s not good, but at worst he’s okay.

See for yourself:

Well, if you sort by long 2 shooting percentage he's tied with Cisco and 1% ahead of Donte

he’s just marginal from beyond the arc but at least he’s better than KMart.

What really does look good is his assists on those long 2’s. He’s 15th in fewest assisted baskets on those long 2’s, just ahead of Roy and right behind Gay, but he shoots better than both from that range. Looks like he can create his own shot And, can finish at the rim well also.

Looks like

He is primarily a spot-up three-point shooter. If they shut him down there, he can still stroke it decently after a couple dribbles get him closer. Where he has problems is between the rim shots and 15 feet.

"I know we certainly gave up a lot to get him, but we do have other players on the perimeter who we can plug in. We haven’t had anybody who we feel is a go-to guy in the post. So we gave up a lot to get a lot, and we’re real excited about adding Carl." - Paul Westphal

Another wing? Kahhhhh- oh, wait.

Maybe management is going for a younger Udoka, with a lower 3-point percentage (36% for Udoka’s career vs 30% for Wright) and worse free-throw percentage (71.2%-Udoka, 67.4%-Wright)?

Haven’t seen Wright play too much and I don’t have access to the cool stats sites so can’t say much about his intangibles.

by clicc916 on Jul 22, 2010 3:08 PM PDT reply actions

Career can be an interesting stat, but players learn to shot better over their career

so I perfer to look at the most current couple of years and quantity of shots taken.

Wright shot an eFG% of 50% from 3 last season, while Ime shot 43%. And, Ime shot 32% on long 2’s to Wright’s 43%. Ime shooting percentages have steadily gone down as his playing time was reduced. He had his worst shooting season last year and his fewest mpg.

Maybe if Ime had a regular stop in the rotation and consistent mpg he could shoot like he did in his 1st season when he had a 60% eFG% from 3’s.

One thing to consider

Wright’s overall 3 point percentage may be worse than Udoka’s, but please, don’t forget about Ime’s horrendous 28% from beyond the arc last year

Hollinger (ESPN) Scouting Report

Scouting report: Wright has a better reputation as a defender than his performance last season indicated, and in fairness he had some difficult matchups. Dallas would often put him on quick point guards to start games so that Jason Kidd wouldn’t have to cover them, and as a natural small forward that was asking a bit much of Wright. Although he lacks overwhelming physical skills, Wright has a stopper’s mindset on the wing and executes better when he can cover players his own size.

Offensively, Wright is quite limited. He lacks the explosion to score consistently around the basket but his jumper isn’t reliable enough to be a go-to weapon. Opponents routinely double off him and leave him with open looks, but he doesn’t convert consistently enough to make them pay. He’d have a role in the league if he could shoot in the mid-30s from 3, but right now that looks like a pipe dream.

2009-10 outlook: Wright traveled to Toronto as filler in the Shawn Marion trade, where he has a better chance of becoming prime minister than he does of starting 53 games again. He holds some value as a deep reserve because he’s willing to defend, but that’s about as strong an endorsement as I can muster.

He’s basically a 12th man who produced D-League-caliber output every year of his NBA career, and he has to consider himself fortunate to have stuck around for this long. If DeMar DeRozan isn’t ready and some injuries hit, Wright may be able to squeeze into the rotation for 10-15 minutes a night, but otherwise he’ll sit.

Works for me

He’ll probably play mostly at SG and can step in like Ime Udoka with some good defense and open jump shots. This is better than a Udoka signing because he’s only 26 and still has a chance to improve. If he doesn’t – just a one year deal.

by nbrans on Jul 22, 2010 3:29 PM PDT reply actions

I would argue

If you were going to sign a bench guy for a year wouldn’t you rather have a vet? Or would it really matter if he is younger? I understand having a core of youth but I think I would take experience over youth when it comes to 1 year rented roll players.

I understand Wright is no spring chicken but I could care less about what he could be if he won’t be here when he gets there.

Anyways I don’t care if GP wants to fill out our roster with scrubs like Darnell & Wright. That’s why these guys are in the league. I’m just confused why we are not focusing on more pressing needs.

I love beating dead horses.

by allbenji's on Jul 22, 2010 3:44 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

Old guys pretty much are who they are, and they are strictly a rental

But young players have the chance to develop into someone better and who could be a part of your core group moving forward.

Case in point: Beno. A one year rental that turned out to be a really good piece (now a slightly overpaid piece, but still). If the Kings had gone with an old vet instead of Beno they would have lost the opportunity to develop someone who could turn into a player down the line.

That’s why I was so incredibly frustrated with the Desmond Mason/Ime Udoka situation last year. Not only do vets take time away from young players, but when there’s no hope that they’re going to be a part of the team long term what’s the point of giving them minutes? Much better to wait and sign the vets when you’re an actual contender. This team still needs to develop.

This isn’t a sexy pick-up but it provides depth at a position of need. I know I wasn’t overly excited with only Donté and Omri at the 3 because I believe the plan is for Garcia to play a lot of 1 and 2. This move allows the Kings to get Donté some minutes at the 2 and in a pinch the 4 as well.

I have been a little harsh

The guys is young & has proven he atleast has a place in this league. I just think he is a better fit if your starting 2 or 3 doesn’t have to shoot. With the current make-up of this team we need a guy who can stretch the floor so Reke DMC can work the inside. Dirk is a jumpshooter, J-Kidd has turned himself into a jumpshooter, Jason Terry, Butler, Marion & Roddy are shooters. All he had to do on Dallas was defend. Here if he wants to start or have a big roll he will have to be able to hit an outside shot imo.

Unless he has been working on his shot I don’t see him helping us anymore than McGuire or Mason helped us. I hope he proves me wrong.

I love beating dead horses.

by allbenji's on Jul 22, 2010 6:10 PM PDT up reply actions

As an outside shooter

You can’t really compare Wright with Mason and McGuire.

McGuire has taken 10 3s in a 200-game career and hit three of them.

Mason is a career 26% shooter from 3 who has averaged just 0.4 threes per game in his career.

Wright in his career is 155 of 506 from 3, or about half a 3 per game in 1.7 attempts, or 31%. And he improved that to 0.9 made out of 2.6 attempted per game for 34% last season.

He’s not exactly Kyle Korver, but he’ll probably be a decent pickup who can fill our backup needs at both SG and SF.

"I know we certainly gave up a lot to get him, but we do have other players on the perimeter who we can plug in. We haven’t had anybody who we feel is a go-to guy in the post. So we gave up a lot to get a lot, and we’re real excited about adding Carl." - Paul Westphal

His stats look about right for the 10th or 11th man

But a look at his stats and game logs looks like he can give 20 steady minutes a night and more if you need it. His career average is 19.6 per game, but he’s never played more than 67 games a season in his five-year career. I don’t know if that is injuries, DNPs or a combination. He’s started 90 games in his career.

He’s definitely not afraid to launch from 3 as only Belinelli and Hedo had more 3PFGAs per 36 minutes than Wright for the Raptors last season. He actually shot more 3s per 36 than Bargnani. On the Kings, only Nocioni and Martin shot more 3s per 36 than Wright.

The Raptors seemed to play better when he got extended minutes. They were 4-14 when he played less than 16 minutes and 28-21 when he played 16 minutes or more, including 7-3 in the 10 games where he played 30 or more minutes. They were 32-35 in the games he played and 8-7 in the games he missed.

He’s not much a scorer and statswise (Defensive Rating) looks like an OK defender. Not a lot of turnovers and the other stats look mediocre. His career PER of 7.9 sucks and would put him in the middle of Donte’s first and second seasons.

Assuming the contract is for low dollars, it looks like an OK, low-risk signing for a guy who’s going to be about the 10th or 11th man and back up both the SG and SF positions.

With this deal, I’d be real surprised if Udoka comes back. But I think we will sign someone like Christmas.

Good summary

The lineup, as I’d do it:

Dalembert/Cousins
Landry/Thompson/Whiteside
Greene/Casspi
Garcia/Wright
Evans/Udrih

Doubt Darnell sticks, but you never know. Sign a guard or two from whoever does best in training camp, as no one really stood out from summer league.

I think we'll see Beno start the season with Reke

Because Cisco fits in with either Reke or Beno.

Not argueing the point but,

if Cisco and Reke started, couldn’t Beno come in for either of them.

He also has playoff experience

Wright’s been in the playoffs in four of his five seasons, missing out for the first time last year. Among current Kings players, only Beno (36 games) has played in more playoff games than Wright (28). Landry is next with 19 and Dalembert has played in 17 playoff games. Udoka (21), Garcia (6) and Jackson (5) are the only other possible roster guys at this point with playoff experience.

Petrie has picked a few young players at cheap

Before and it has worked out but lately it hasn’t worked ie Hilton Armstrong but let’s just give wright a try and when he has a good defensive game against lakers we will love him. I’m
More surprised at how soon it is it’s not as if we couldn’t afford to wait to sign

by larry_funderburke on Jul 22, 2010 6:40 PM PDT via mobile reply actions

I can see it..

looks like we’re not looking for any big acquisitions (obviously,) but we’re looking at length. wright is actually a pretty good defender.. and he has length at 6’7. he was normally put in at toronto defending smaller guards (which didn’t help him out any) so i think him guarding two-guards will be easier i assume.. wright will probably be back up to tyreke at the 2 with cisco

by D00M on Jul 22, 2010 7:03 PM PDT reply actions

Solid signing

I like it, quite frankly. Low risk, medium sized reward. He’s been a productive player in some limited opportunities. He might just be the right ‘fit’ for this roster as a back-up SG.

by Smills9133 on Jul 22, 2010 7:08 PM PDT reply actions

I can't remember if it was Bibby or Miller,

but a couple of years ago we were manufacturing a lot of trade ideas with Wright coming back in return. This is such a no risk signing. It is what it is, and I like it for what it is – a non-rotations seat is filled, and it is now up to Wright to crack the rotation.

I still like the idea of adding Roger Mason Jr.

He’s another guard that can be a ‘shooting’ specialist. He’s a career 38% shooter from downtown and has some decent handlers to where he could handle PG in a pinch duties if Beno/Tyreke and maybe Sloan are no-gos.

Ideally we find a PG that’s big and can shoot(George Hill comes to mind as an example), but I don’t see any of those on the FA market this summer. We’ll have to scour trades, wait for the draft or maybe the FA season next summer to fill that role.

In the meantime, rolling with:

C: Dalembert, Cousins
PF: Landry, Thompson, Whiteside
SF: Greene, Casspi
SG: Garcia, Wright
PG: Evans, Beno, Sloan

by Smills9133 on Jul 22, 2010 7:56 PM PDT reply actions

I think the traditional lineup only works for C

C: Dalembert, Cousins
    -C/PF: Thompson, Whiteside
PF: Landry, Thompson, Whiteside
    -PF/SF: Greene
SF: Casspi, Greene
    -SF/SG: Wright, Garcia
SG: Beno, Garcia, Wright
    -SG/PG: Beno, Garcia
PG: Evans, Beno, Sloan

Clearly, the Beatles were better.

Oh…my bad you meant the other Wings!

Not a bad show, but the plot got stale after a few seasons. Though it was still some of Thomas Haden Church’s best work.

Re: Proposed lineups

When exactly, given how thin the team is at guard, did Beno become a lesser quality option at SG than Cisco? My recollection is that last season, Beno played quite well alongside of Evans, and was pretty damned good when playing in place of him, too.

History repeats...

This is a 15-year list of draft day balers’ i. e. bb players that were drafted after kings chose their own kings pick. Ergo an historical draft list providing only 4 times over 15 years as thought a master mind decision maker yielded 4 best choices. Im guessing master mind earned over 15 years about 45 million +/-.

Theo Ratliff (18) Michael Finley (21) -Steve Nash (15) Jermaine O’neal (17) Zydrunas Illgauskas (20)
-Bobby Jackson (23) Stephen Jackson (43) Dirk Nowitzki (9) -Paul Pierce (10) Rashard Lewis (32)
-Dirk Nowitzki (9) Paul Pierce (10) Rashard Lewis (32) Tony Park (28) Gilbert Arenas (31)
-Mehmet Okur (38) Carlos Boozer (35) -Luis Scola (56) -David West (18) Josh Howard (29)
-Mo Williams (47) Anderson Varejao (31) Trevor Ariza (44) David Lee (30) (ouch) Louis Williams (45)
-Andray Blatche (49) Marcin Gortat (57) Rajan Rondo (double ouch year) (21) -Paul Milsap (47) Aaron Brooks (26) -Carl Landry (31) -Marc Gasol (48) Robin Lopez (15) Goran Dragic (45)

A few who look familiar were not drafted by kings…but acquired down stream.

Add in the list of Head Coaching blunder’s i.e. (big ouch!) failing to make B. Scott, head coach his second year… over keeping a long-term friendship (commendable in real world-not NBA-high stakes.) but but but but but It makes total since now why Kings are possibly contracting with a wingman that cannot shoot consistently beyond the arc….. next year right fellows.

I just doubt anyone will ever find it. The “but” x 4 was entertaining though, in a Max Headroom/Cerebral Palsy kind of way.

Hindsight is rarely an useful tool when thinking about all the "things" that you could have done otherwise.

Especially since I don’t remember anyone clamoring for Marcin Gortat back in, like, 2007.

There is so little to be desired here in terms of a point I’ll let the stupidity stand on it’s own. Almost 4 days later is too late to really comment too.

Oh, this one is cool

He thinks Peja is still around here:
Ex-Raptor Antoine Wright has landed in Sacramento. A weird choice, considering I can’t see him every seeing the floor. Tyreke Evans, Francisco Garcia, Omri Casspi, Peja Stojakovic and others will all play ahead of him.
Well, probably he has got confused with Beno, those slavic names, you’ll never remember.
But no mention of Greene – he thinks Donte is 4?
journalism fail:)
