I love the NBA Rookie scale

Too bad the NFL doesn’t have the same scale.

Actually i think it will be coming up in the new contract. The only thing you really have to look at is the fact that you are far more likely to have a career ending injury in the NFL then you are in the NBA..That’s what will be the sticking point for it. I do like the idea of having a NFL rookie schedule where it max’s out the money at which draftee’s can be signed at. I also think MLB needs a cutoff point as well. Giving a guy 13 million just for the right just to negotiate with him for a contract is absolutely asinine

In 2000, Ichiro was still a year away from being eligible for free agency, but the Blue Wave were no longer among Japan’s best teams. Because they would probably not be able to afford to keep him, and would lose him without compensation in another year, Orix allowed him to negotiate with Major League clubs. Ichiro used the posting system, and the Seattle Mariners won the right to negotiate with him with a bid of approximately $13 million.6 In November, Ichiro signed a three-year, $14 million contract with the Seattle Mariners
.

That's not even the best example

The Red Sox paid $50 million for the right to negotiate with Daisuke Matsuzaka.

i actually really hate

how much salary has come into the day to day thinking about the NBA. “this player’s great, but he’s totally overpaid” is a way-too common sentiment. and “salary dump” is another part of the language. it would be nice if it was just about talent, or committing to a player the max didn’t mean risking your franchise’s future for 5 years on a blown out knee.

Childress then flew to Greece and asked the team if they would pay him in gold bars, hookiers, weed, and marijuana. The rest is history.

Not so fast there Ziller,

if Tyreke has two more seasons like the last one, he could be signed to an extention and a big raise before the start of the 2012/2013 season.

I don't think that is right

I think that his contract amount is locked for the next three years. They can extend him, but that won’t change the next three years.

Yeah I think you are right

I remember we signed Kevin Martin before his contract was actually up and his extension didn’t kick in right away.

by DerekRE_3 on Jul 4, 2010 3:12 PM PDT up reply actions

214 has it

First-round players are locked in at a set salary for four years, assuming the team picks up all the options.

by Tom Ziller on Jul 4, 2010 3:19 PM PDT up reply actions

I read it a little different,

Coons says this about Rookie scale extentions:

Rookie scale contracts may be extended for up to five seasons beyond the player’s last option season, bringing the total contract length to six seasons. All other extensions are limited to five seasons, including the seasons remaining on the current contract. For example, a contract with two seasons remaining may be extended for up to three additional seasons.

So, if a six year extention includes the last option year of his rookie contract. Then the last option year of the rookie scale contract isn’t picked up. Instead it becomes part of the extention and the salary is governed by the rules relating to extentions.

The salary in the first year of an extension to a rookie scale contract may be any amount up to the player’s maximum.

I don’t know the history of the league as well as some others, so maybe someone else remembers something like this happening before, or maybe it never has.

Reading a little further down I see someone brought up Rondo

He signed a rookie scale contract in 2006, and signed an extention in Oct of 2009 which was the begining of the 4th year of his rookie contract. But, ShamSports has his 2009 salary as $9M which certainly isn’t scale for the 21st pick in the 2006 draft.

I might be alone

But the way the NBA salary scale for rookies is now, it’s working as well as it can. I personally think the salary structure is fine in the NBA. It’s just people are jealous about the salaries these people are getting. Yet, nobody complains about how much Britney Spears makes and that’s amazingly obscene you can even attach wealth next to someone like Ms. Spears.

And you are right

The Rookie scale works very well, I think. It definitely is a boon to those teams like the Kings, who rely on that value of production and cap space to rebuild. Unlike baseball, who has to determine who to pick in the first round of their draft depending on the size of bonus they are willing to pay them.

I actually do have an issue for how much these actors make and have voiced so on other occasions off STR. I also have an issue with Production companies telling an actor he will get % of profit, then under reporting how much profit they actually made

Thing is singers make their real money off of concerts, and merch sales. They don’t do concerts and they don’t make profits. I don’t necessarily have an issue with NBA salaries as much as MLB and NFL. But i think teams guarantee players too much in contracts and would like to see more incentive based monies instead of guarantees.

Not just for the most obvious reason (hello, it's 2010!)

But who knows what rules the new CBA’s going to have?

To many things can happen...

You can’t worry about that stuff. You just have to trust that the next 4 years will be successful. I know Reke said he was happy to get DMC and it seems like he really likes the other key guys, like Landry, JT, Donte, Omri and even Beno.

This is all key. Look at OKC with Durant. If they had drafted poorly and were not winning games, he wouldn’t be so anxious to get an extension done.

Chances are good he does though

If the Kings want to give him a max extension (they will), then we should be able to strike a deal to extend him. The Blazers did it with Roy, the Hornets with Paul, the Jazz with Deron, etc. Usually players sign that one year qualifying offer when the team isn’t sure if they want to pay them or not (see: Raymond Felton). I don’t see that being the case with Tyreke.

Green!

I didn't major in Common F-cking Sense, but ...

by MustangMBS on Jul 5, 2010 2:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Actually

Signing Evans to a max contract, up to 6 years into his career, is less than signing a max contract for a player up to 9 years, or 10+ years into their career. Confused? Max contracts are based on how long a player has been in the league.

0 to 6 seasons: 105% of previous contract or 25% of the total salary cap…whatever’s greater (09-10: $14,472,500)
7 to 9 seasons: 105% of previous contract or 30% of the total salary cap (09-10: $17,310,000)
10+ seasons: 105% of previous contract or 35% of the total salary cap (09-10: $20,195,000)

Also, there’d be a new CBA. There’s a possibility that the max contracts for players, under this new agreement, would be much more restricted.

by CloudyEyes on Jul 4, 2010 7:55 PM PDT up reply actions

Ain't gonna matter when Tyreke signs a new contract Cloudy

He’s better off signing a new extension in 2012 and then becoming an Unrestricted FA in 2016. That’s the worst case scenario.
