I'd rather
just keep what we got and wait til next year! But that’s no fun, so i went Thomas. I think he has a lot potential still.
Per 36
Travis Outlaw: 15.2 ppg, 6 rpg, 1.7 apg, .9 spg, .8 bpg, 1.6 topg, .503 TS%, .381 3P%
Luis Scola: 17.9 ppg, 9.5 rpg, 2.3 apg, .8 spg, .4 bpg, 2.2 topg, .550 TS%
Richard Jefferson: 14.2 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 2.3 apg, .6 spg, .6 bpg, 1.5 topg, .551 TS%, .316 3P%
Udonis Haslem: 12.7 ppg, 10.4 rpg, .9 apg, .5 spg, .4 bpg, 1.2 topg, .538 TS%
Eddie House: 14.0 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 2.5 apg, 1.2 spg, .2 bpg, 1.4 topg, .495 TS%, .348 3P%
I went with need
and picked the only non-F/C on the board again.

Disagree.
I think House would fit very well w/ the current squad, receiving kick-out passes on the perimeter from Tyreke and Beno. (Is this his first appearance on one of these free agent polls?)
I thought he was a great off-the-bench spark for the Celtics earlier in the year before the Nate R trade. Much like Morrow, he’s a 3-point specialist, but we just don’t have that right now. Omri and Donte just aren’t there yet. We need someone like that to spread the defense so they can’t clog the lane on ’Reke and/or collapse on Cousins/Landry.
eh
Omri and Donte both shot nearly 40 percent from 3 last year and are both clearly on the upward mark at this stage of their very young carrers

I agree that we need someone to spread the floor and I would have voted for House if there weren't more talented players still up on the poll.
But yes if the Kings did happen to sign House (think he is from the Bay Area by the way) then I would be fine with it.

House is a no go
IMO the fourth guard on our roster needs to be able to play with at least 2 of our 3 current guards. You could pair House with Evans well as a spot-up shooter. But play him with Beno and the opposing backcourt will score on us at will. And pair him with Cisco and our offense will stop, as neither is a facilitator.
This is why I’d expect Petrie to grab a pass-first PG in the Ridnour, JWill, Watson mold, or a strong perimiter defender who can hit the open 3. Whether it will be a name we know or a young (read: cheap) darkhorse, I would not venture to guess.

I went with Outlaw because in my opinion he’s better than our SFs, but Eddie House can fill it up, no doubt.

I think Casspi will have a better season than Outlaw
But Donte won’t. The only thing that kept Casspi from outperforming Outlaw last year was he hit a conditioning wall.
They are what they are
Inexperienced players who struggle to average 10 points a game and are the team’s weakest link. It doesn’t take much to beat that, and Prince and Outlaw definitely can jump over that low bar.
That said, I hope they prove me wrong as well, because that’s apparently all we are going to have.

Prince and Outlaw huh?
I’m all for an upgrade. Manu? Sure Rudy Gay (tho not at that contract) yep. Prince a declining player who barely averages more than our " weakest links"? no thanks. Omri was a breakout player in first season in a new country before he hit rookie wall. Donte was yo-yo’d from shooting guard to power forward and still showed marked improvement. They are 21 years old. You seem to be hating a little too much. Lets give our “NewEraKings” a shot before we throw them out for a 29 year old Outlaw, who I like, but who is also wildly inconsistant. This is a young rebuilding team. If after next year Donte and Omri seem to have plateaued ok. But to bring in a temporary old guy to take minutes into young guys who are almost as good and could be better next year at the expense of the youngsters who stand a good chance of being our future is absurd. I know we have had this argument and you will probably hate up to the midway point when they are showing they can ball, but cmon, give the new era Kings a chance.

Is he on crack?
Travis Outlaw an upgrade? He has only two seasons where he averaged more than Omri did in his rookie year, he hasnt hit 46% from the field since 2005, he has never averaged five rebounds a game, or even two assists a game, with his career apg being .9. Omri will have a better career than that if he never improves.

Has been arguing for us to sign a veteran SF to play ahead of Donté and Omri for a while. His favorite is Tayshaun Prince.

Any upgrade is an upgrade
to the weakest link on the team.
You could make the same arguments with Spencer Hawes and Dalembert. Dalembert is older and better. Hawes is younger and has more potential. We made the deal to get better and in my opinion it was a smart move. And Hawes was more productive last season than either Casspi or Donte.
I’m not a hater of the two youngsters, I just think we can get better at every position and would like to see those efforts continue, no matter how incremental the improvements are.
I just don’t have the sentimental attachments to seeing guys we drafted become stars for us, because most of them won’t get to the level we need to be a serious NBA team. It’s a crapshoot, so sign me up for a more proven commodity. Let someone else be our farm team.

Its not that I am against an upgrade
I just don’t consider Prince or Outlaw upgrades honestly. And Dalembert is a big upgrade because even tho Hawes is younger and has more potential they play different games and we needed SD style big time so for us its huge upgrade. I understand your point and think you have right to it, I just think its absurd and am don’t think Petrie is interested in it either because they are both available…

Your love of Outlaw is unfounded
However. He is not a quality starter as a 3. He is a sixth man at best, and probably a 7th or 8th man. That is not an upgrade.
You may be right
I don’t love Outlaw. But careerwise his stats are better than Omri’s and far better than Donte’s, so I view that as an upgrade to the Kings weakest position.
And you could say the same things about the two fellows we have at the 3 now: not quality starter material. You’d be hard-pressed to find 10 other NBA teams that Omri would start for. He’d probably be a valued sub and they’d hope he’d grow into a good player by playing the minutes he’s earned and not forcefeeding him minutes or a role he’s just not ready for.
"I know we certainly gave up a lot to get him, but we do have other players on the perimeter who we can plug in. We haven’t had anybody who we feel is a go-to guy in the post. So we gave up a lot to get a lot, and we’re real excited about adding Carl." - Paul Westphal
He’s a Rookie who hit the rookie wall. Before he hit that wall he could have been a starter on many teams. Everyone was preaching patience with Hawes(And him being in his 3rd year), Why don’t we do the same for Omri. As far as DontÉ goes they moved him throw so many positions and some many different types of play style, I give him this year to settle down and show what he’s really made of.
Judgment day is coming!
I don't disagree that there may be better options at the 3 than Casspi or Greene,
but Outlaw does not seem to be one of them. To wit –
Last year = 9.1 ppg, 3.6rpg, 1 apg.
Career = 9.5 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 0.9 apg. 44% floor, 36% from 3, 74% line.
Casspi = 10.3 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 1.2 apg. 45% floor, 37% from 3, 67% line. And a seemingly more willing defender than Outlaw. By the way, Outlaw did not better Casspi’s rookie season until his 5th season, and he has only bettered Casspi’s rookie season twice in seven years.
SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!
I think you are overlooking a few things
I don’t think the debate is who had a better rookie season, but who is a better player now and who will be in the future.
Outlaw was drafted right out of high school and played sparingly his four seasons, averaging only 6.8 points per game in 203 games. He only played in eight games as a rookie.
He really came on in the 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 seasons, finishing third in scoring both seasons for the Blazers behind Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge with about 13 points per game in a little more than 27 minutes a game for teams that won 41 and 54 games.
Last year he broke his foot in November, part of a rash of injuries suffered by Portland, and was dealt to the Clippers with Steve Blake for Marcus Camby. His stats weren’t as good last season and he averaged only 21 minutes per game.
Outlaw is still only 25, and I think if you compare his stats for the 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 seasons, you’ll find they are better than Casspi’s. They are even in many categories, but I think Outlaw is more athletic, a better defender, a better free throw shooter and definitely a better shot blocker. His career PER of 14.8 also is superior to Casspi’s 13.0.
In any case, Outlaw’s stats are much better than Donte Greene’s. He also has been part of a winning program that stresses strong defense and isn’t used to losing. So you are way ahead of the game even if you have Outlaw just take over Donte’s minutes.
Outlaw made $4 million a season for the past three years. He’s probably going to come fairly cheap due to the injury last season, although you never know the way things have been going. I think he’s worth keeping on the radar.
"I know we certainly gave up a lot to get him, but we do have other players on the perimeter who we can plug in. We haven’t had anybody who we feel is a go-to guy in the post. So we gave up a lot to get a lot, and we’re real excited about adding Carl." - Paul Westphal
I'm not overlooking anything
There are better 3’s than what we currently have. Outlaw, in my opinion, is not one of them.
SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!
Gotcha
But I could sworn you were lecturing people on overvaluing Donte Greene, and now the third leader scorer on a 54-win team isn’t better than Donte? That makes perfect sense.
"I know we certainly gave up a lot to get him, but we do have other players on the perimeter who we can plug in. We haven’t had anybody who we feel is a go-to guy in the post. So we gave up a lot to get a lot, and we’re real excited about adding Carl." - Paul Westphal
for the record
I don’t think, even at this stage in their careers, that Outlaw is better than Omri, who I think at least his equal even if he never improves. Both Outlaw and Omri are much better than Donte at this point, who is still riding the huge upside wave, who knows if he ever comes close to attaining it.
I'd rather have Donte & Omri than Outlaw
Outlaw is not a defender. Donte is better defensively than Outlaw is, and Omri is definitely the caliber of player Outlaw already is.

Casspi > Outlaw > Greene as of right now
So you want to pick up Outlaw to back up Casspi? I don’t.
SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!
First-Half Omri is probably better than Outlaw
Second-Half Omri might be worse than Donte.
I hope First-Half Omri makes a stunning reappearance, because that second-half version just won’t hunt.
If Omri doesn’t regain his early-season form, Outlaw is a clear upgrade. In any case, he may push Omri to be a better player. And because even the starter will be lucky to play 30 minutes a game and probably less, the backup SF will have a significant impact on the Kings performance this season.
Now I know that doesn’t matter, because some feel we are on some low expectations timetable and we’re good but not good. But I want to see the Kings improve in any way they can, whenever they can, and start playing games that matter sooner rather than later.
"I know we certainly gave up a lot to get him, but we do have other players on the perimeter who we can plug in. We haven’t had anybody who we feel is a go-to guy in the post. So we gave up a lot to get a lot, and we’re real excited about adding Carl." - Paul Westphal
Low expectations has nothing to do with it for me
I don’t think that Outlaw is an upgrade. You do. The stats seem to say that he isn’t, unless you want to focus on two of his seven years. That’s your choice. Omri’s rookie year bests 5 of Outlaw’s 7 seasons, as well as his career numbers. Heck, Greene’s season last year bests Outlaw’s first 3 seasons. But you like the guy, and that’s your right.
You want to upgrade the 3? That’s fair. But can we reach a little higher than Travis Outlaw, please?

I think it's reasonable to focus
on his more recent play and compare apples to apples. I’m not sure why you are obsessed with talking the guy down based on his first three seasons when he has grown into a better player since then and a key contributor to Portland’s success.
Omri’s second-half dropoff was dramatic and raises concerns for me. If he plays like that this year, I guess we will get another high draft pick to address the upgrading of the position. There may be some of those giveaways that Joe Maloof is talking about that also fix the situation.
"I know we certainly gave up a lot to get him, but we do have other players on the perimeter who we can plug in. We haven’t had anybody who we feel is a go-to guy in the post. So we gave up a lot to get a lot, and we’re real excited about adding Carl." - Paul Westphal
Moot point with regards to Outlaw
since he’s now off the market with a 5-year, $35-million deal from the Nets.
"I know we certainly gave up a lot to get him, but we do have other players on the perimeter who we can plug in. We haven’t had anybody who we feel is a go-to guy in the post. So we gave up a lot to get a lot, and we’re real excited about adding Carl." - Paul Westphal
I'm not talking the guy down
I don’t think that he is as good as Omri. Even with Omri’s “dramatic” second-half drop off, he still compares favorably to Outlaw statistically, and that is not even taking into consideration that Casspi seems to be a much more enthusiastic defender.
You like Outlaw more than Casspi. I like Casspi more than Outlaw. It’s really that simple. Really.

Well you say how Outlaw
Was young his first four years. He was one year younger than Donte who is going into his third year. I agree Donte is riding the upside train, but if he improves this season as much as he did year one into year two, he will already be a solid player. And if Omri simply improves his conditioning he is better than Outlaw. So, no thanks

And when I say “Grammer Nazi” I just mean you correct people’s spelling or grammer errors. I probably shouldn’t have used that term.
And I have zero problem with it, even if you chose to do so with me. I only get annoyed when in the middle of a back and forth discussion someone counters back with “that’s not how that is spelled you moron” or stuff like that and completely ignore the content. Maybe that is what a “Grammer Nazi” really is. Either way though that is definitely not what you do.
So yeah, sorry if I offended.

"I know we certainly gave up a lot to get him, but we do have other players on the perimeter who we can plug in. We haven’t had anybody who we feel is a go-to guy in the post. So we gave up a lot to get a lot, and we’re real excited about adding Carl." - Paul Westphal
As long as she's not at SF he's good to go
If Petrie/Westphal think the can do things at SG that Omri can’t, then I’m all for it.
Let us usher in the era of Reke DMC!
Give it a rest already.

It would be a huge stretch
for Outlaw to all of a sudden break out in his seventh year, and contribute more than Casspi can next year. Crack, or no crack.
Come on now, really.
When does my boy, Sean May get added?
Either that or give me a “Coke and a bag of Doritos” option.
"And I never said I don’t like KMart. I just don’t think the duo is good for the team. They are essentially two of the same player"
Sammyp831.
Eddie House? Eddie fuckin' House? Seriously?
This shit needs to stop already. I’m with SB on the “Coke and a bag of Doritos.”
