The Asinine Offseason Thread - Part Deux
Have I taught you nothing Sactown Royalty? There's been like 4 posts in the past week about how we should trade for Courtney Lee. Seriously? Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have him in a Kings uni but we don't need so many fan posts dedicated to a third stringer who doesn't actually play for us, do we? And Gerald Green? You're kidding right? So when it comes to ideas you have for the Kings' front office this offseason, please feel free to post it here. Ziller hardly does any work around here anymore anyway, I hate for his time to be wasted closing crappy posts.

Here's an asinine idea -- the Kings do nothing!
I vote we just keep our current roster of players, sign some VSL guys to fill out the roster minimum of players, and that’s all. We play out the season, see how we perform, identify our weaknesses and holes, and then fortify them in next year’s draft. This must sound asinine but I don’t wanna trade away any of our current players because we haven’t even given them a chance to show their (new) stuff. At most we sign some mediocre SG like a Morrow or Reddick or such. No trades!
Let us usher in the era of Reke DMC!

Agreed
I like the thought of giving Cisco a chance at the 2, especially considering that none of the FA 2’s are really that exciting.
I would have no problem trading Cisco and a future 2nd rounder
but those would be my only trade pieces

Why trade Cisco?
You know there is a league minimum salary right? I mean I’m not opposed to trading Cisco for a better player but who is going to give up a better player for Cisco?
I love beating dead horses.
Well they have to sign somebody....
to get to the minimum level.
Probably someone cheap and unexciting though. Or maybe the current market will drive Brockman’s price up.
Minimum is 12 guys right?
So signing Cousins, Whiteside and re-signing Brockman should do the trick there
#vfettkefordraft
Minimum roster is 13
Twelve on the active roster and one on the inactive roster. Although the league pays a fine to the players union if the league wide average drops below 14.
This is from Coon’s FAQ #66
While individual teams are only required to carry 13 players (12 active and one inactive), the NBA also guarantees a league-wide average of at least 14 players per team. The league is surcharged if they do not meet this obligation.

stay patient in the offseason
Near the trade deadline find a team like atlanta who will be struggling to keep up with the powers in the east and in desperation look for a trade, just to make some sort of a power play. Trade Landry (now an inexpensive, expendable big), for Crawford, a perfect compliment to tyreke (speed, capable defender, good shooter, great ballhandler)
plus
maybe atlanta will realize they made an idiotic decision and try to shed some cap space for next summer. We may be able to get away for a dalambert trade, but either way, crawford would be a great pickup IMO
While I'm not as high on Crawford as you (poor shot selection, IMO)...
I totally agree with your sentiment, stay pat and trade Landry for something useful before we lose him and get nothing in return.

Trade
Indiana Pacers Receive:
Beno Udrih
Carl Landry
Sacramento Kings Receive:
Dahntay Jones
Paul George
Why the Pacers do it: They desperately need a PG, and Beno is a servicable PG. Landry adds value to the trade as a replacement if they find a home for Troy Murphy.
Why the Kings do it: Neither contracts are big contracts (Jones- 4 years, 2.5 mil) while George is a shooter who can defend and play the 2 next to Tyreke.

Have to whole heartedly disagree with you
George has all the tools to be special. Been watching the Pacers summer league games, and though his stats don’t blow you away, it’s very easy to see his potential on the floor. I’d love to acquire him for sure, and this is an amazingly fair trade IMO.
Let us usher in the era of Reke DMC!
He might eventually be better than Beno.
But watching the games last year, Beno had a remarkably steadying effect on our young team, played extremely well, and showed that he could play alongside Tyreke.
Unless George is an immediate upgrade in talent, I don’t see us giving up Beno and Landry, who is extremely skilled, for a project guard and a journeyman.

That's a terrible trade sorry
Beno & Landry were our 2nd & 3rd best players last season. Trade our one of our only 2 PGs for 2 more small forward/wing types?
I love beating dead horses.
We finally get a power forward who can score
and for some reason everyone wants to dump him. Wh? So we don’t hurt some player’s development? Please. Let’s focus on the team’s development for a change.
"I know we certainly gave up a lot to get him, but we do have other players on the perimeter who we can plug in. We haven’t had anybody who we feel is a go-to guy in the post. So we gave up a lot to get a lot, and we’re real excited about adding Carl." - Paul Westphal

Trade
New Jersey Nets receive:
Jason Thompson
Beno Udrih
Kings receive:
Devin Harris
Future pick
Why the nets do it: They’ve wanted to trade Harris quite some time. Being able to get players like Udrih and Thompson for a total of what they pay Harris is a bargain. Also, Thompson could come in and perhaps play alongside Lopez and Williams moving Humphries to the bench.
Why the kings do it:They get an explosive player in Harris to compliment Tyreke very well. They need a playmaker/scorer at the guard and Harris can definitely produce for them.

Plausible? Yes. Advantageous? No.
I thought we wanted to add to our backcourt. Taking away Beno to get Harris AND getting rid of JT in the process is bad. JT is the only non-rookie big man we have that is guaranteed to be here next year. Who knows if we will re-sign Sammy or Carl? Also, the value of New Jersey’s picks are going to be very poor in the upcoming seasons.
by caseycheesecake on Jul 8, 2010 8:11 AM PDT up reply actions
right
but Thompson would bolster their frontcourt. Lopez has yet to play with a Pf half as skilled as Thompson. Beno would come in and distribute the ball well, and bust his ass every game just as he has for us so far. I think it could happen. Can they get better? Of course. But there are times in the NBA when the Gm decides"Hey, we need to move on and go another direction."
Didn't the Nets
Draft a PF who is supposed to be “highly skilled” at some point? This trade does nothing for us at all I would say.
I'm not sure I'd want to trade anyone right now
Everyone kind of fits to me right now. We don’t have any crazy contracts or sour players. We have a ton of cap space. We need to add not subtract.
Don’t get me wrong if Indy comes calling with a Granger for Beno & Donte trade I’d be all for it but that’s not going to happen. If we want to get a good player use our cap space & draft picks to get it done.
I love beating dead horses.
One more thing
We have a logjam in the frontcourt so I say just let it sort itself out & look to make trades at the deadline.
I love beating dead horses.
I'd hate this trade.
Harris is fragile and a poor outside shooter.
Thompson is a SOLID rotational big. We need a complement to Tyreke, not someone who will take the ball out of his hands.
I’m pulling for Morrow. I also have to say that I am intrigued by the thought of taking a flier on Shaun Livingston for the right price – cheap.

I keep hearing about
“We can’t get this or that player because he takes the ball out of Tyreke’s hand” but isn’t that what Beno did at times? It seemed to work pretty well. I think whoever we put next to Reke has to have some ballhandling & point gaurd skills. I’m not saying it’s Harris because i don’t know enough about him.
Wade is a ball dominant gaurd but he won a championship with 2 pure points in J-Will & Gary Payton.
I think we just need a good ballhandling gaurd, good distibuter, & good shooter. Really we just need a stonger more athletic Beno to ddefend better & take advantage of the mismatch.
Someone posted a fanshot about Mo Williams possibly being on the block. At the time I blasted the idea of aquiring him. Mainly because he makes a lot more than Beno & does some of the same things. At the time we really needed a big man & the focus should have been on using our space to fill that void.
Fast forward to now we have a crazy frontcourt & 2 small forwards with a ton of potential who are making strides. So what else are we going to use our space for? If we could get Mo Willams on a salary dump I say go for it

Petrie said the Kings are looking to get involve in a 3 team deal, because we need to add players
The CBA requires that the Kings have at least 13 players on the roster. So, we need to take back more players than we’re trading away. We’re only at 11, now.
He wants to use the cap space to pick up talent, in a deal where two teams can’t trade because salaries don’t match and they’re over the cap. So, we need to look at teams over the cap or in Lux Tax area to find talent. Undrafted players would be the final option.

I like NOH as a trade partner
They are $2M over the Lux Tax in a small market. And, that’s without their 1st round pick and with 10 players under contract.
Here’s my trade: Posey & Collison for a 2nd round pick. Saves them $8M + probably another $4-6M in lux tax money. Let’s them fill the roster and stay under the Lux Tax
Kings get a very good PG and a vet SF. Posey does have two years on his contract at a litttle over $6.7M per year average. But, he’d be a valuable mentor for Omri & Donte and his salary comes off the books before any of the rookie contracts end and they need to be resigned.
And, did I mention that we get a very good PG.

Depends on a couple of factors
How desperate are they to get under the cap, and could they receive better offers? I can’t imagine they want to deal Collison, but that might be their price to pay to substantially slash their salaries.
"Matt Cain's better at this than I've ever been at anything in my life. He's better at this than you'll ever be, at anything. Matt Cain has a gift. He has a gift, and when you acknowledge that, then maybe we will have something to talk about."
While Collison is a valuable player, he is just a backup
and getting $12-14M in savings for his contract sounds like a pretty good deal for a 21st pick in the draft. The savings are just this year, the also save $7M next year on Posey’s contract.
I think they can find a pretty good backup PG for that kind of money. In fact, the Kings would probably be the team that has to think about it the most. Collison would more than likely have to be the starting PG to make that kind of expenditure woth while.

"If my aunt had a set of nuts, she'd be my uncle"
I also like Memphis as a trade partner
After resigning Gay, Memphis is over the salary cap with 11 players under contract. And, they still need to sign Henry and Vasquez.
So, they might be willing to trade Conley and they for sure won’t match an offer for Brewer. Conley is owed about $5M and we could probably get Brewer for much less.

Here's a question...
Why are there so many trade scenarios involving Carl Landry? Let’s look at this dude’s stats:
37 min, 18 ppg, 6.5 reb, .52 fg%, .74 ft%
Compare them to one Rudy (82 million) Gay:
39 min, 19.6 ppg, 5.9 reb, .46 fg%, .75 ft%
Rudy was overpaid, but a LOT of people around here wanted that guy for our squad. Landry pulls down brilliant stats and is clearly a tough guy and decent defender. Sure he should rebound better, but now we’ve got three great rebounding centers, on good rebounding PF, and solid rebounders at the SF and G position (Tyreke). I don’t think us Sacramentans are giving this guy enough credit. He’s only 27. I think that if he has a similar season next year, we should pay him! And at the very least, we don’t give him away for a backup shooting guard!
by Grantnapeareatskittens on Jul 8, 2010 8:22 PM PDT reply actions
You answered your own question
by mentioning Gay’s contract. Lando’s a free agent next summer.
I think the most overpaid guys in the league are borderline all-stars like Carl. Look at Gay, Ben Gordon, Iguadala, Lewis. . . etc.
Landry will leave to someone that pays him 75 mil next year.
Kings wont sign him because they will that they are over paying.
No way Landry gets that much
He’s not a good enough rebounder, shoot blocker or defender. Best guess is that he gets around $9M. Gooden got $8M per, Outlaw got $7M per and Haywood got about $9M per, so based on his potential I’d say Carl should be in around the top of that scale.
"If you don't have anything good to say, LIE" - Mom

Agree with HighTops
Landry squarely fits in the Brendan Haywood/Drew Gooden tier. David Lee and Rudy Gay are all-stars; Landry is a very solid player.

You're absolutely right
But that doesn’t mean you trade the guy for spare parts. He is a borderline star, if you’re trading him, you better get a borderline star in return, or at least some very high draft picks. The trades I’ve seen have been extremely lopsided. We are under the cap, and we are loaded with big men. These are both positions of strength. Let’s not be in a hurry to sacrifice either, just because they’re weapons in our arsenal. The key is PATIENCE. If, partway through the season, Atlanta is looking to part ways with Josh Smith, then you’ll be glad you have a productive, low-paid player like Mandry to dangle in front of them.

Kings get a veteran wing play that can shoot and dribble and be an extra play-maker on the roster. His contract expires so it gives the Kings added flexibility to boot. The cash makes Dunleavy’s contract worth HALF of it’s actual value to the Kings.
Kings - Cavs - Wizards
Wizards trade: Gilbert Arenas, Nick Young, JaVale McGee
Wizards receive: Delonte West, Leon Powe, TPE
Cavs deal: Mo Williams, Delonte West, Leon Power, Daniel Gibson
Cavs receive: Gilbert Arenas, Nick Young, JaVale McGee
Kings deal: TPE, 2nd round pick
Kings receive: Mo Williams
Why for the Wizards – They move Gilbert for instant cap relief at the cost of a couple B level prospects
Why for the Cavs – They add a dynamic backcourt player and preserve their TPE for Jefferson while getting a couple tradeable assets to help reposition themselves.
Why for the Kings – They get a dynamic PG that can be a perfect complement to Evans, shoot the 3 ball and be a veteran leader as we ascend our way up the standings in the West.
no.
One)I don’t see Dan Gilbert taking on Arenas’ contract when he’s always injured. Two)I don’t see the deal being made simply due to the fact that the wizards are receiving Delonte West and Leon Powe for scorers like Arenas and Young. 3)This is arguably the most asinine trade I’ve seen, and believe me, I’ve submitted quite a few terrible ones myself.
You are still the champ
So don’t you worry.
How about
Kings trade:
Landry
Beno
Nuggets trade:
J.R. Smith
Ty Lawson
Nuggets need a post scorer and the Kings could use a young outside shooter. Asinine Right. Plus, Beno helps Denver now and Lawson could be his replacment and the 6th man we have not had since B Jax.
Take Beno out and insert Afflalo in for Smith
And I’d consider that. I like Lawson A LOT. And I like Afflalo even more. I think I’d rather deal Thompson in this kind of deal, but not opposed to moving Landry for that kind of return.
I don’t think Denver wants Beno as a back-up.
Kings - Bobcats - T-Wolves
Kings deal: TPE+2011 2nd round pick
Kings receive: DJ Augustin, Gerald Henderson, and Reggie Evans
Bobcats trade: Reggie Evans, DJ Augustin, Gerald Henderson, 2011 1st round pick(top 10 protected), 2011 2nd round pick
Bobcats receive: Al Jefferson
Wolves deal: Al Jefferson
Wolves receive: TPE, 2011 1st round pick(top 10 protected), 2011 2nd round pick
Why for the Bobcats: They land Jefferson
Why for the Kings: Fill out their roster
Why for the Wolves: They get their TPE and picks they’re looking for in return for Jefferson
Kings new roster:
C: Dalembert, Cousins, Whiteside
PF: Landry, Thompson, Brockman
SF: Greene, Casspi
SG: Evans, Garcia, Henderson
PG: Udrih, Augustin, Sloan
Chris Paul on the block???
Yes please. I think we might have the ability to pull this off…but we’d have to offer up a pretty sweet package. I think I’d part with anyone, anything outside of Evans and Cousins.
My thoughts are this:
Hornets give: Paul, Okafor, Wright
Kings give: Dalembert, Casspi, Landry/Thompson, TPE for Paul(like a 15 million TPE) and a 2011 top 3 protected pick that goes unprotected in 2012. And a 2013 1st round pick.
Kings get substantially better in the backcourt and make themselves relevant immediately.
Hornets shed a ton of current and long term money while picking up a couple nice assets in Casspi and Landry/Thompson. Dalembert gives them a stopgap fix at center next year and the 2 picks look to be at least fairly solid in the 12-25 range in 2011 and who even knows in 2013.
Kings new roster:
C: Okafor, Cousins
PF: Thompson, Whiteside, Brockman
SF: Greene, Wright
SG: Evans, Garcia,
PG: Paul, Udirh, Sloan
Hornets:
C; Dalembert, Brackins
PF: West, Landry, Songaila
SF: Casspi, Peja, Pondexter
SG: Thornton, Posey
PG: Collison
