Jersey looks like they're just spending money for the sake of spending it.

I think Houston did it again. They cut a lot of salary and didn’t sacrifice much.

Indiana fans should be excited. Collison would be great for them.

But why the eff did NO do this trade? I guess they love mediocre players with multi-year contracts. I wonder if they need a versatile Hispanic swingman who can play some 1.

Gotta understand though sdfd....

…..that Murphy expires after this season. It’s not like they will lose any flexibility by taking on Murphy (of which they can totally absorb all of his salary).

True and I think this definitely will help them get more wins this season for sure.

But I just don’t know what direction this team is going. Why are they giving up Lee and potentially a better draft pick for a guy who’s not going to be around when Lopez and Favors peak?

Imagine if this time last year the Kings traded Donte Greene for Brendan Haywood. Donte sucked back then and Haywood is a solid starter and would have filled a need, but then they would have just ended up with cap space they would have had anyway and Ekpe Udoh instead of Cousins.

I just think they’re just being a little anxious..

Because they need depth on the front line and Murphy is available?

Personally playing for a better draft pick is stupid.

You play to win, and if you can win this season than you’re making progress. Draft picks are nice, but that’s mostly luck. A franchise loses integrity when they really tank, and I don’t think the Nets need to tank this season. It’s a good move that opens up a spot for Terrence Williams.

Personally, I think playing for anything but first place is dumb.

This seems like a move that tries to achieve short term improvement, but I can’t imagine this Nets team building a contender with Murphy.

Lee is a promising young solid player on a promising solid young team. Murphy is a pretty good player who just doesn’t fit in to any sort of a plan. Even without the pick situation, I don’t see why you trade Lee for Murphy if you’re the Nets.

To win this season. Last season was so awful, the Nets want to leave that behind and win as much as they can this season. It’s not a bad goal.

Agree to disagree.

I stand by my Brendan Haywood analogy. I’m personally glad Petrie is more patient with reacting to the being a last place team than the Nets were.

I'll give you that.

Courtney Lee has much more value than Donte did and Murphy has a bigger contract than Haywood. And instead of being a 17 win team, the Nets won 12 games. Brook Lopez is a much more valuable piece of the rebuilding puzzle than anyone the Kings had.

But Haywood and Murphy are both similar in age and production, and the Kings and the Nets both sucked hard and drafted a promising rookie.

After signing Outlaw and Petro (I love their Morrow signing. I thought it was very fair.) and adding Murphy. They went from a last place team to maybe a fifth-to-last kind of a team. They can’t sell their cap-space for the Maynors and the Aldrich’s of the world and they’ll be stuck without Courtney Lee, who I think will be a solid starter in this league. Sure they got better, but at what cost?

The Kings are on a long journey to the top. The Nets are taking the shortcut from suck to suck-a-little-less. They’d better have some free agent pipe dreams.

by sdfd on Aug 11, 2010 11:34 AM PDT up reply actions

But you gotta remember

They also have Terrence Williams, Anthony Morrow, Damion James, Travis Outlaw among others who can play the 2.

Frankly, the Nets needed depth at the PF position this season and they had none. Now they have some breathing room for Favors development (which will be important).

The Nets also have Jordan Farmar and Quinton Ross.

Plenty of depth at the 2 IMO. Eliminating a logjam isn’t smart, but getting better and more competitive? Of course you do that!

I guess you and I will just always disagree on this one.

The Kings would have definitely gotten better with Haywood. They started Sean freaking May at Center to start the season. You also have to remember that the Kings had quite the logjam at the 2 and the 3 as well with Noc, Speed, Garcia, as well as the newly drafted Casspi and what many thought was NaPG. Would you have traded Donte for a 30 win 2010 Kings team?

The Nets aren’t going to make the playoffs because of this, and frankly I don’t think they’re going to come close. I think Murphy is going to bolt after this season anyway, unless they overpay or get Melo. Courtney Lee is a hell of a price of pay for that privilege.

by sdfd on Aug 11, 2010 11:52 AM PDT up reply actions

Haywood wasn't available at the beginning of the season.

I would have done a trade for Haywood’s expiring contract if he had been available.

Again....your analogy is missing important points though.

The Kings were not nearly as far under the cap as the Nets were. That’s one. Two, Donte Greene doesn’t have the value, I’m guessing, that Courtney Lee has on the trade market right now.

It's not a literal analogy..

it’s more of a would-you-if-you-could type situation.
I think Lee being better than Greene strengthens my point, personally…

I guess some would do it and some wouldn’t, and there is good argument on both sides.

Quoting TZ at Fanhouse about the deal
The Nets have some depth on the wing, having signed Travis Outlaw to a five-year deal last month, having drafted Texas small forward Damion James and bringing back Terrence Williams. Murphy, a high-rebound stretch four, can either hold down the power forward slot next to stud center Brook Lopez while rookie Derrick Favors develops, or he can back up both big positions as an odd matchup in waiting. New Nets coach Avery Johnson had another stretch four — the great Dirk Nowitzki — in Dallas; he knows how to work the matchup game, even if it sometimes burns him. (See: Golden State, 2007.) Even better, Murphy’s deal expires next summer, meaning the Nets have a stopgap fix at a need position without giving up financial flexibility, so valuable given the uncertainty of the next collective bargaining agreement.

I think NO is doubling down on getting as much talent to fit around Chris Paul as possible right now because (a) hopefully it will entice him to stay or (b) heck at least we gave it a shot when he was still here

I actually really like what NO did (that is, if they have already made up their mind that they are in no way going to trade Paul)

Yes they’re losing Collison, but losing Collison and giving up Posey in the process. (They are taking back 2 extra years of the Ariza deal though. But, really, so what?)

What does that mean for Kmart? Or if they play together on the wing, do we start Donté at SF and post him up? Battier not starting then? Tyreke getting a free pass down the lane?

Hey when Rush gets extended minutes at the SF and SG position, Posey is getting something

Plus technically I guess they can afford Posey given their team salary takes a nose dive after this season.

Posey's contract expires in 2012.

It saves them significant salary this season though. I’m also guessing they aren’t likely to be major players in the FA market either.

I think it's a good trade for all parties

Houston has like 9 small forwards & with K-Mart’s fragility(is that even a word?) They could use another SG. I don’t think N.O. is as bad as their record last season CP3 was hurt & DC is good but no CP3.

They obviously liked what Posey brings only Posey never brought “it” for them so enter junior Posey in Ariza.

I like T-Will a lot more than Lee & obviously the Nets don’t have much confidence in Favors being a big contributer next season.

Indy has been searching for a PG for many many years. Now they have a very good young PG.

Win-Win for everyone imo

Indy needed a PG

New Olr desperately needed a good starting SF. I’m not sure what New jersey gained long term, a move to win a few more games this season I guess.

The Nets were looking for depth and a stopgap solution until Favors was ready for all the minutes. Murphy was the best stopgap solution available by any definition and all the Nets gave up was cap space and Courtney Lee. I do that deal every time if I was them.

Truthfully, I think the deal was pretty good all 4 ways.

It's rare to see trades like this where all teams benefit

Indiana seems like the winners here because they actually got a legitimate young talent at a position of need. I could see them possibly challenging for that 8 spot in the East next year if fully healthy, and losing Murphy means more time for Hansbrough and McBob.

New Orleans lost Posey’s salary, but they gained a potential star in Ariza, who could perhaps thrive off of playing with a great distributor in Paul. He showed in Los Angeles he could be a great complementary player, while he showed in Houston he was bad at being the go-to guy. In New Orleans he’ll return to a role more suited to him.

New Jersey gained a veteran that will provide more wins now (and coming off a 12 win season, this teams fans need to see some wins) and also will allow Favors to develop at a more careful and slow pace, not throwing him into the fire straight away.

Houston got rid of Ariza’s inefficiency and mistake of a contract last year, and gained a promising young shooting guard in Lee to backup Kevin Martin.

Good deals all around.

well put

Good deals all around

I think Troy Murphy will shine brightly in NJ, Houston wanted to get rid of Ariza – they did that for the promise of Courtney Lee. I think Houston will do more deals yet (are they under the lux tax?). Collison gets to start and Posey is an expensive price but as they get the starting PG they have yearned for the past 4 seasons. It seems a reasonable price to pay (particularly when added to Collison’s meager cost).

by betweentheeyes on Aug 11, 2010 2:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Agreed

i think it was deals that help everyone. Although, Houston won’t get under the tax (although Morey also has significantly reduced the bill), but who cares? They’re okay for the future.
