2010 Mid-Summer Sacramento Kings Personality Inventory

Toothpastepersonalitytest_medium

Browsing through the nets this morning, a Friday bullet on TrueHoop mentions this blurb on Truth About It.com

And this Flip Saunders quote: "Well, defensively, the team always takes the personality of their players."

Star-divide

This led to my version of a personality test for the crowned crew of the California Capital:

(give yourself 1 point for every A, 2 for B, 3 for C, 4 for D)

1.   Defensively, this Kings team is:

    A.  Full of Scrap and not much else

    B.  Too young to tell

    C.  A hodge-podge of stoppers and floppers

    D.  The talent and strategy to be a League recognized force

2. Offensively, this Kings team is:

    A. Tyreke and the Reke-anaires

    B. As good or bad as anyone - indistinguishable

    C. Full of all the needed weapons - effective but often confused

    D. A collection of unstoppable forces: slashers, low post scorers, mid-range shooters, with some 3 point threats

3. The overall personality of this Kings roster is:

    A. Reckless bon vivants - it's the NBA!

    B. Developing: reserved with lowlights balancing the highlights

    C. Spirited, collegial but with a few corporals and sargeants, no captain

    D. Respectful, supportive with familial fondness and ready to move forward as a team

4. The coaching staff of the Kings is:

    A. Prepping the team for Who's next? Think Chicago Bulls Doug Collins 1986-89

    B. Re-learning the ropes and re-acting more than acting

    C. On a roll, riding the wave,  going one step at a time

    D. Ready, willing and able. Bring it!

5.The Front Office of the Kings is:

    A. Going through the motions: Doing what is needed to keep the business afloat (and ready to move)

    B. Starting to climb out of the cellar they dropped the team in

    C. Going from re-building to building. A youthful foundation is in place. More to come.

    D. Content. The pieces are in place, the salaries are low, the downtown Arena should be completed in time for the championship run - in 3 years!

Does this team have a personality? The summer is a time when we outsiders get to see a different facet of the team. We have seen JT going to Israel, Tyreke, Landry and JT at the VSL, DMC and Whiteside posing for rookie pics, The Donté Greene show, etc. What positives and negatives do you all see at this time and foresee for the season(s) ahead?

Unlike Ziller, SHOCH, HT, Aykis16 and many more – I won’t do math or box models or pie charts. Just pie quotes. (Key: 0-5: Pessimist: Pessimism is as American as apple pie; frozen apple pie with a slice of processed cheese. George F. Will 6-10: Skeptic: - "The future… seems to me no unified dream but a mince pie, long in the baking, never quite done." Edward Young 11-15: Optimist: - Pie is the food of the heroic. No pie eating nation can ever be vanquished NY Times, 1902 16-20: Fantacist: "Mmmm… pie pants… "Homer Simpson

Good post BTE

Personality isn’t something you can guage via statistics anyway (although if you could I think the Statistical meter would be Red Flags per Minute).

I vote:

1) B – This team has players who are talented enough to be good defenders, but too young to have learned how to actually play defense. This will come in time, hopefully.

2)C – The Kings do have a diverse offensive arsenal. With the acquisitions of Landry, and now Cousins, the Kings have some great offensive threats. Beno is a guy who can devastate the mid-range, Reke’s driving ability is unparalleled, and Omri and Donté are both good shooters who are diversifying their games. Cisco is another player who has been overlooked as of late because of his injury. Thompson definitely needs some consistency in his game.

3)B – This team has some great chemistry, but even with Reke’s emergence I don’t see a clear cut leader. Growth will help here as well.

4)B – This is a young team that needs to focus on some of the fundamentals. Good work was put in here last year, now its time to add to the development.

5)C – I still think we’ll have to add another major piece via FA or Trade before we can say we’re set.

I reject your entire premise!

It’s late August, not midsummer. We’re in the pre-season in six weeks.

1- B: I think this is a bunch of guys who want to be good defenders, but so much depends on the defensive schemes put in place by the coaches, it’s hard to say how good they are. The fact that they’re young probably has a lot to do with their desire on that end of the court, though.

2- C: Our roster is fairly talented. Again, so much depends on the line-ups on the court and the way players are used in the offense. But I’d say that our young core could develop into something special.

3- D: I love that our guys are close. I think that closeness off the court will develop into trust on the court, and that’s a really good thing. It was one of the hallmarks of the glory-years Kings.

4- A: I like Westphal. I really do. And I know last year was really rough, with an extremely young team, a new coach and staff for guys that had played for three coaches in two years, and injuries to key players. But I’m not convinced that Westphal & Co. are the staff that can lead a team to the promised land. I’m willing to be convinced, but at present, I don’t see it.

5- C: We have our core. Now it’s just a matter of tweaking and refining, adding a complementary piece as needed.

Bah!

You are still working on taming the savage beast. You have your hands full, world domination is at least a few weeks away.

Am I the only one who noticed that you might have screwed up your answer key?

I notice your key only accounts up to 16 possible points…when there’s a maximum total of 20 points.

True story- I was invited to a dinner with a few “socially elite” (I dont fall in this category) and guess who ended up joining us! Mr. Petrie was actually very pleasant, but dry nonetheless, and gave great insight to the Kings. Weeks before the LeBron Show he said that we would pick NO major or even mid-major free agents and he sadly stayed true to his promise. He also said we won’t chase any next year either. Build through the draft and trading for financial “flexibility” (which he explained to be Maloof flexibility). He stated he is an employee of the Maloof’s and they have a strangle hold on which moves we make that have any inclusion of big money. Minimizing financial loss and gaining national attention seemed to be the short term goals of the front office, and to me it sounded like it wasnt to sell jerseys….. but to increase ticket sales this year and perk up the ears of potential buyers & host cities. I LOVE the Kings and want them here forever, it just didnt sound like that was the goal of the front office knowing Sac isn’t even a decent sports market. This conversation started after a lawyer said his firm wont buy season tickets anymore if they don’t sign Bosh or Stoudemire hahahahaha!

10-11 prediction: 36-46

See you in Arco this year!

Congratulations!!!

You managed to get more info out of Geoff in one dinner than anyone in the media, the 29 other teams, or anyone else could get out of him in years of trying. He must really like you.

I actually had dinner with Gavin and Joe the other night (true story) and they said that if they could just get the team to play bad enough, that would force ticket sales down low enough that they could force a move out of Cleveland to a bigger market and then…..oh wait that was me sitting alone eating a salsbury steak T.V. dinner and watching Major League for like the hundredth time. My bad.

I'll play, though I'd like to see this again around New Year's day.

(lotsof changes to the roster)

1) B. [defense] Too may changes and too many young players to know for sure until we see a month or two of play to guess how well they’ll do on defense. Sammy D will help a lot I think and continued growth from Omri/Donte and a healthy Cisco give me some real hope.

2) C [offense] Lots of weapons, and thank the maker that most of the new ones are of the low post variety. I actually think we’ll be fine from outside and fine inside.
In the mid-range game the only proven commodity is Beno – and that could be a problem. Some of the big men, JT and Landry show some nice signs there, but I am not counting on any consistancy from Cousins yet and will not factor him in. Can any of the other wings (Tyreke, Omri, Donte) contribute consistantly from mid range? Time will tell.

3) C [personality] I’m not sure I could have phrased it better than bte did on the C answer. Cisco maybe a Sergeant Major or a lieutenant.

4) C [coaching] I’m giving them the C right now. It’s a very young team that dealt with a lot of injuries and trades last year. I want to see a more diversified offense more often and a real plan with options on how to direct this team when times get tough down the stretch of games. Keep them moving the ball coach!

5) C [front office] I think the confidence is reemerging and some success this season will solidify my C choice. I don’t believe and pray to god the answer isn’t A. B was considered but they may have moved past that and D is foolhardy at this stage, no 27 win team has all the pieces in place.

BTE

I’d really like to see this again after a month or two of play. We should ahve a lot more opinions at that point with some real data to play with.
