Sources insist it’s no longer a matter of if the Nuggets trade Anthony, but when, where and for whom he’s traded for.

"It’s almost a given they’re going to move him," said a front-office executive who’s talked with the Nuggets and Anthony’s agents with CAA.

Ya, saw this last night.

Something about the major suitors being the Clippers, Warriors, Rockets, Knicks and Bobcats – which means, pretty much everyone could be in the mix.

Do we make an overture? I don’t see how we do not – if we can work out a sign and trade.

It would have to be an extension and not a S&T.

Which is, though, doable.

Also in the article

It’s mentioned that the Nuggets want young players and draft picks. The teams listed as being in contention are the Nets, Clippers, Warriors, Rockets, and even the Bobcats (although that one seems like a stretch, just because Melo has a shoe contract with Brand Jordan. Charlotte doesn’t have any tantalizing prospects).

Again, the Kings are left off the list, despite having a wealth of assets. It could be because a player like Melo has no interest in coming to a small town like Sacramento, but if he really wants to win, pairing up with a slasher like Tyreke Evans and a great big man prospect in DeMarcus Cousins could be the start of something big.

I personally don’t think Melo is as good as he’s cracked up to be. He’s not as efficient as a player of his caliber should be, and he probably shoots way too many threes for his own good (career 30.8% three point shooter), but he is one of the deadliest scorers in the league. I don’t think a team is out there right now that could offer a better set of prospects to the Nuggets than the Kings, and the Kings have the ability to take back a lot more money than is going out, so they could take back some of the contracts that the Nuggets don’t want, like J.R. Smith or Kenyon Martin. I don’t really like either of those players, but both are expiring contracts, and Martin is a top notch defender (plus wouldn’t it be funny to have him on the team with all the times NBA.com has said he was when Kevin was in town?)

What do you think it would take?

Dalembert, Landry, and Omri plus picks. Just throwin it out there. I agree with you that the we have the young players and picks to make this happen.

by Doors Open on Aug 27, 2010 7:19 AM PDT up reply actions

It would take Mello agreeing to sign a long term extention prior to the trade.

I don’t know how many teams will have enough cap space next season to sign Mello outright as a FA to a max contract. But, at least the Kings could. So, Denver really isn’t in total control as far as dictating what they want in return. Mello, might want to get a long term deal signed before the new CBA goes in affect, so he has the power to force them to trade to what ever team he wants. Or face the wrath of Mello who could simply play out the year and sign with whoever pays him the most, leaving Denver with nothing.

With that in mind, I can see Denver doing the deal for JT, Omri & next years 1st rounder. If they decide that they want more cap space, they might take Dalembert instead of one of the other 2 players but make us take back more bad contracts like JR Smith. Either way nothing gets done unless Mello signs a long term extention as part of the trade agreement.

I love Omri

but

JT, Omri & next years 1st rounder.

I’d do this trade in a heartbeat. Assuming an extended deal for ‘Melo, like you said, and I’d trade away the pick unprotected.

I do think the Nuggets will get better offers than this. It is a situation like this, superstar player in tenuous spot, however, that allows us to capitalize on the cap space room we created with the K-Mart deal. Petrie harped on the flexibility it opens up for future deals. So whether it is a 2-way, or 3-way scenario, I hope we can find a way to get involved.

Does anyone know why ’Melo wants out so bad? Does he feel the Nuggets are poorly run?

I predict JT puts up 7/5 next year.

by bench_blob on Aug 27, 2010 9:55 AM PDT up reply actions

I'm not all that sure Denver gets that many better offers

especially if they are looking to Luxury Tax relief. The Kings have enough cap space to offer just Landry and a 1st rounder, which would take Denver out of the Tax and save them $14M in tax and $14M in salary this year. JT and Omri combined only make $500K more than Landry, so Denver would save between $27-28M and get 2 talented young players on rookie scale contracts. Not such a bad way to start a rebuild, so let’s see anyone else match that.

I still would rather do Donte and Landry which is just a bit less room, we have to worry about Landry not resigning at the end of the year, Omri could learn a lot from having Mello there, and be productive in 15-18 minutes, That and I like JT’s all around game more then just Landry’s scoring.. We will have mello, Tyreke and cousins there for scoring…we need better all around players there more then just offensive weapons

Not even just NY and NJ, if you're just talking Jewish population.

Detroit, Toronto, Boston, Chicago, Philly and LA all have sizable Jewish populations.

by PurpleLoco on Aug 27, 2010 7:28 PM PDT up reply actions

I was basing it purely on the Omri roadtrip turnouts

MSG and NJ had so so so so so so so so so so so many supporters. He’d sell tickets like a mad man. That’s why I think NJ should do everything in their reasonable power to acquire him, so that they can “steal” NYK fans and make them Nets fans, as Csar Prokhorov put it.

do you think he'll sign an extension here

I wouldn’t want to give up what they’d want (Casspi and probably JT for starters) for a 1-year rental

by LPKingsFan on Aug 27, 2010 5:40 AM PDT up reply actions

That's the thing

It would have to be a pseudo sign-and-trade, where he signs the extension and then is traded to us. But the consensus is that he only wants the extension to be 3 years.

I believe Denver offered him a 3 year extention

my guess is that Mello believes the new CBA will reduce his max salary should he exercise his ETO next summer. He signed a 6 year max contract 2006, so he’s eligible to sign a 6 year extention with a 10.5% raise, which will probably be a better deal than what he can get if he exercises his ETO and goes looking for a new deal under the next CBA.

Mello is only 26, so a 6 year extention isn’t out of the question. He’s already making $2.6M more than LBJ, Bosh & Wade so If it’s only about money he’s better off with a 6 year extention. If it’s about a ring, only he knows how much money he’s willing to leave on the table. Certainly, Cle had no idea what LBJ was thinking. He’s probably going to get his cake and eat it too. Pick the best contender for a ring and get a max extention.

Rumor is they're going to trade Chauncey too for rebuild sake

Now he would be an ideal acquisition. so so so so so so so perfect.

I'd rather facilitate a Melo trade.

The Nuggets are 7ish million over the tax. One of their goals to moving Melo is to get under that LTT number I would imagine. I don’t think they could shed THAT much money without working with a team that has a LARGE TPE or is under the salary cap. I’d like to see us use our cap space to get a nice prospect like Afflalo, Courtney Lee, or depending on what we could package WITH the cap space relief for Denver an Eric Gordon potentially.

I think we could finagle our way into a 3 way using our cap space and come out with a backcourt mate for ’Reke.

Good thinking

Trades don’t usually work out that spectacularly for any of the teams involved (unless you’re the Lakers), but it would be pretty nice to get a starting guard by only giving up cap space.

So we solidify the 2 for the future

and get a lot weaker at the 4 and pay Garcia $6 million a year to play 10-15 minutes a game. Not a great tradeoff.

"I know we certainly gave up a lot to get him, but we do have other players on the perimeter who we can plug in. We haven’t had anybody who we feel is a go-to guy in the post. So we gave up a lot to get a lot, and we’re real excited about adding Carl." - Paul Westphal

I hesitate to fully envision how awesome it would be to get 'Melo

Kings would get huuuge press for such a move, and no doubt be heavily into the playoff hunt.

This contemplation makes me nervous.

the circus in Denver

No mistake about, Melo is a talent. I do not put him in the Kobe or Wade class, but he is a good player. If I was Denver and I could get the right pieces I would pull the trigger. Why, there are simply to many “clowns” in Denver. JR Smith, clown. Kenyon Martin, clown, The “Birdman”, part clown, I even consider Melo part clown. The only two players who seem to a bit serious are Chauncy and Nene. I am know sure how Karl did it. If I was Denver and I could package Melo and JR Smith (better yet, Kenyon), I pull the trigger.

Question: Would Carmello make us a playoff team this season?

I think he might.

I’d rather not give up Omri,Tyreke or Cousins, though I see why Omri might be superfluous if we landed CA.

But I just don’t see Camello agreeing to signing an extension here. Fun to talk about but . . . .

Given the fact

that I don’t see ‘Melo signing an extension here, I don’t give up anything of value to get him. Call me when he shows interest in signing an extension with Sacramento. Until then, it’s a non-topic for Sacramento.
