More Denver Players who could help the Kings

Looking at the rumors on ESPN, it sounds like more than just Carmelo Anthony could be on their way out.  Chauncey Billups and J.R. Smith are also on the trading block and could be potential great additions to the Kings.

John Hollinger brought up the idea that if the Nuggets do trade Anthony, they will also trade Billups.  Is there a more perfect fit (minus that large contract of his) for this team for what we need?  An all star point guard who can knock down outside shots, play awesome defense, and help mentor our young team.  Not to mention the small detail of having already won a championship.

I'm not nearly as high up on Smith, especially after the latest incident where he allegedly choked some dude for being too physical with him during drills.  If (I know it's a big if) he can get his act together, he's a pretty good little wing to have on the team.  He would also give us a 2 to pair with Tyreke.  He's definately a high risk player who could have high rewards too.  He also has an expiring contract, so we won't be stuck with him if he does turn out to be a dud.

So, here we go.  In my opinion, there is no downside to having Billups on the team (even though I'm sure someone here can make a pretty good argument as to why he would be a detriment, I just couldn't think of it).  I would offer Beno, JT/Landry, and a top 10 protected draft pick for Billups and Chris Andersen.  This would seriously help the Nuggets with finances and gives them either a young, cheap big in JT who's still developing or a really good low post scorer in Landry with an expiring contract.  We could also potentially throw in the Bucks' 2nd round draft pick or Darnell Jackson to sweeten the deal, if need be.

As far as for Smith, I'm still not sure if I'd take him.  I might offer a future 2nd round pick or try to land him in a three way deal.

Let's hear what you all have to say about this.

I think Chauncey is likely to be moved with Melo or Smith

Strange as it might sound, he’d probably play the 2 if he went with Melo to the Knicks…since, you know, he’s playing the 2 currently for the Knicks’ coach. Chauncey’s obviously going to help the short term, but I think we’d have to mortgage too much of our future for him. Involving multiple first rounders and most of our depth.

JR would be nice if he wasn’t a complete headcase. I want him nowhere near our young team. Particularly, I want him no where near Cousins. The guys who I think would help us the most are Afflalo (as has been covered here many times), and Lawson. I doubt Lawson is going anywhere, as he is young enough to be part of the rebuilding process.

So that leaves Afflalo. The Nuggets should be willing to part with him if they are blowing the team up as a player of his type is vastly more important to a competing team than a rebuilding team. For us, I think he could help us get to the next level.

And on a side note, Melo is my favorite non-King in the league. But I feel like he’s turning into Wild Thing in Major League 2. The organic nature of the first part of his career is gone. It’s like he’s trying to hard to fit in to the Lebron James crowd. When in fact, the reason we liked him in the first place is he was the anti-Lebron. And Lala Vasquez (to continue the Major League 2 analogy) is Rebecca Flannery.

I seriously doubt the Knicks have what it takes to get Melo

Let alone both him and Billups. What can they offer? Isaih Thomas gave away many draft picks and they don’t have any players that would be appealing minus that Gallinari kid and Randolf. I would not do this trade if I were the Nuggets.

You spelled out the exact reason I am so sketch about Smith. Not nearly mature enough and could cause problems with other players.

The more I think about it, the less I want Melo on the Kings. He’s a shoot first forward who doesn’t play very good defense and has an attitude that rivals LeBron’s. He also comes along with Leon Rose and World Wide Wes who suddenly think they’re calling all the shots.

Personally, I’d try and land Billups kinda like gdub did in the proposed trade above with Melo going somewhere else.

Last time I checked

Darnell Jackson doesn’t sweeten much…

$1M reduction since contract not guaranteed

Houston hates being in the Tax and would love to soften that a bit after losing a lot of talent to get Melo.

Is Carmelo a headcase?

Why on earth does he want to leave Denver? They’re still legitimate Western Conference Finals contenders, and could conceivably make moves between now and the trading deadline to get better. Maybe they’re good enough RIGHT NOW. They’ve offered him the max extension and he’s not interested? So what’s his angle? I just don’t get it, and before seeking him in a trade, I’d want to be sure what his deal is. He’s obviously phenomenal, but if he’s unhappy in Denver, where would be happy? The Knicks?

Seriously, is this just a ploy to get him shifted to the Knicks? Are he and Chris Paul really this stupid? Both of them trying to force trades where none exist? I’m really confused as to what he really wants to accomplish here with the trade demands.

Once we’re all satisfied that he’s fit for the Kings, then how do they get him without gutting this team? I can’t imagine the Nuggets letting him go to another Western Conference team like the Kings without either of Tyreke or Cousins. Naturally, the Kings should be looking to get Carmelo to team up with the two future stars they already have, and I don’t think the Kings can get that done. Not this summer anyway.

As for the rest of the players, the only one who does anything for the Kings is Billups, and he’s already old. It’s possible that he could rub off a little on Tyreke, but I think that’s about the extent of his benefit. By the time the core of this Kings team (Tyreke and DMC) are actually performing to their potential, he’ll be FA/OLD. I guess the question that needs to be asked is whether or not Tyreke can develop to the player that his potential suggests without a guy like Billups taking some minutes from him. I’d guess there’s a good chance that’s the case and I’m just not sure that Billups is worth much to the Kings.

Denver has no real power to demand anything.

If they don’t do a trade, Mello walks away from his contract at the end of the season and they get NOTHING. Just ask Clevand how much power they had in trying to get a trade for LBJ done. Or, Miami acquiring Chris Bosh from Toronto in exchange for two 2011 first round draft picks.

It could be possible that if Mello forced a trade this season, and CP3 forced one next season, the two of them could join up with Amare in NY and form another powerhouse team in the East. Or, it could be that Mello wants a max extention (6 yrs) rather than the 3 he’s being offered by Denver.

On the positive side, if Denver doesn’t get a deal done, the Kings will be one of a handful of teams that will have the cap space to offer Mello a full max contract next summer. So, if they wait they might get him anyways without giving up anything. Or, if Mello agrees to a 6 yr extention with his trade, the Kings might get away with sending a couple of our role player and next years #1. We have enough cap space. Actually, Carmello for Landry works and it would take Denver out of the Luxury Tax.

Don't discount the Nuggets power in all of this...

At the very least, they certainly have a vested interest in NOT sending Melo to another Western conference team in a blatant dump. The Nuggets certainly have their choices to make in all of this, but I think dealing with the Kings in a manner that Kings Fans would want to see is out of the question. That’s my opinion. I purposely left out any other trade options from my post above since I didn’t think anyone would care what the Wizards, or Magic (or any other random team) could offer. Frankly, I don’t care either.

if Denver doesn’t get a deal done, the Kings will be one of a handful of teams that will have the cap space to offer Mello a full max contract next summer

This, Absolutely, the Kings need to keep in mind that they have other options to acquire this guy. He’s special but in this context, he’s not worth either of DMC or Tyreke in a trade, since the point would be to have all three on the same roster.

If Mello agrees to a 6 yr extention with his trade, the Kings might get away with sending a couple of our role player and next years #1.

I’ll walk naked down J Street and play with myself the entire time if this is the best option the Nuggets have in a trade between now and the end of December. Seriously. This guy is special. They get special in return. Not a mix of oddball players and draft picks. I think the Nuggets are honestly willing to let this guy walk. Maybe between the cap space opened up and other trades they do, having him walk wouldn’t be as bad is it sounds on it’s own. Keep in mind that 2011-2012 is a player’s option in his contract and the “thing” with Carmelo is an agent driven deal, as far as we know. He could change agents, take the option and work on an extension with the Nuggets at this time next year. Or a trade. I don’t think the Nuggets have any interest to fatten up the Kings between now and forever, regardless of the “walk” that Carmelo may or may not do.

Personally, I think Billups would accelerate Tyreke's development

Chauncey is an experienced verteran who could shot Tyreke a thing or two on the court. I don’t think he’d take any of Tyreke’s minutes away. We’d simply shift Tyreke over to the 2 spot in the lineup where he could be the primary ball handler on select plays. Having a guy like Billups out there would compliment Tyreke’s game, not hinder it.

I would even flip that

Let Tyreke run the offense. I have been watching a lot of the USA basketball and Billups can handle the 2 spot very well. He would be great taking the ball up sometimes, but I think he can be effective as a shooter for us as well.

I like Billups

He would be a really nice addition as the starter with Tyreke, especially since he has shown he can play off ball a little bit. But probably not going to happen =[

I think

The only player on our roster who’s truly safe is Ty Lawson, but I could be wrong.

Chris Andersen could be in a porno with his 'stache. Too bad he still wouldn't know how to box out.

I would definitely look to acquire JR

Buy Low sell high. I know he is crazy, but he has to behave because this is a contract year.He can come off the bench and score 20 any night. Also it would take very little to acquire him. If he causes any trouble just cut him.High reward low risk. We know he can play so just showcase him and then sell high to a contender

If it was a scenario where his contract was non-guaranteed, then ya, but its not.

Delonte West is signing a non-guaranteed contract with the C’s now and I think that would have been the route to go. Not taking on a 6 mill contract that we have to give up talent for in a trade in the hopes he is well behaved. Which he won’t be. Contract year you say? He just choked out a practice guy if I do recall.

Umm... I thought we were officially referring to Voison as the Chick Replacing Amick at the Paper? or CRAP, for short.

Get Billups Not Melo

Billups not only won a championship he was the MVP of it. He turned Denver around when he got there. Melo does not play denfense and will cost to much. Landry and his instant offense needs to stay here. If you can get Billups with a draft pick or Beno and a draft pick or Garica and a pick, you have to get him. With a Billups and Evans back court and a deep front line Kings are back in the playoffs. And in 2 years with DMC can win a title!
