FIBA World Championship, Day 1 Open Thread
The 2010 FIBA World Championship kicks off today with 12 games. It's available in full on ESPN3.com if you can get it, and some games will be on NBA TV. Team USA's matches will appear on the ESPN family of channels; today's Croatia tilt is on ESPN Classic.
I highly recommend Marca's beautiful calendar for seeing which games you want to watch. Besides USA-Croatia, I'm most interested in Spain-France, Argentina-Germany and Canada-Lebanon.
No Kings will appear in the tournament -- Tyreke Evans was cut from Team USA and Beno Udrih quit the Slovenian team. But Beno's brother Samo will play, so that's something.
First games tip off at 6 AM PT.

Nicolas Batum!
Now there’s a guy I wouldn’t mind seeing as our starting 3 of the future. Portland is just loaded if they ever end up healthy. With a healthy Oden, I can see them going all the way in a couple years.

nice group of starters
France: Nicolas Batum, Pietrus, Boris Diaw, Ian Mahinmi (sp?) (Tony Parker and Beaubois (Roddy Buckets) both out.
Spain: Rubio, Marc Gasol, Navarro, Rudy Fernandez, Felipe Reyes.
France overmatched here with there two star guards out. No one to score the ball (Batum and Pietrus are both known for there defense).
Rubio looking good with a steal and score in the early going, low scoring first 6 mintues 1st Q and two early fouls on Batum for the French, 2 PF on Gasol and Reyes for Espana.

France is not getting anything going against Spain
They’re definitely missing Parker.

No scoring no playmaking
Spain not doing much on defense other than clogging the lane and not having too. They will just outscore the French for the win.

Sergio Llull
Houston owns his rights, he’ll be great in the NBA if he ever comes over. Calderon like.

France's offense is a lot of iso
Which is not good when you don’t have Tony Parker playing.

Rubio with the great cut
He could’ve shot that if he want to.

not a lot of confidence in his drive game
but he does look to pass first, no doubt.

I am not watching the game but I havent noticed you guys mention the absence of Noah
Are they not missing him or is it just the guard play thats killing France?

France's D isn't bad
It’s their offense that’s troubling.

no No ah
they are Joakim-less. Mahimni is their only front court player of note.

And one last question...It's Mickael Pietrus' brother that is playing right?

It will be interesting to see what happens
A lot of good players missing for many teams.
On talent alone, the US should win easily. Who, other than Dirk, would you put on the US team of all the teams competing? Also, who from the US team would not crack the starting five of another team. Perhaps Love and Chandler would not start for a deep team like Spain, but that’s a big maybe.
But it’s a team game. We’ll see.
Dunking Dutchman
Also these other national teams have a lot more experience playing together
than the US does.

Already making excuses, huh?
Soft.
The other teams also have players scattered throughout the world, in the NBA etc., and usually these are their key players.
Dunking Dutchman
Not making excuses at all
I still think the USA wins it all. I’ll be rooting for them and Greece (the motherland).

Batum is destroying Spain
France up 5 with about 2 minutes to go.

France now up 6 with 3 free throws coming up
Because of a Rudy Foul and ensuing tech. Also fouled out Rudy. Spain is in big trouble.

Wow and back to 6
after Rubio knocks down 2 free throws and France turns it over for a 3 on the inbounds.

wow!
No way a team with all of the talent of Spain (aren’t they favored to win it all?) should lose to a team like France. What a surprise
