FIBA World Championship: Day 3 Open Thread
Team USA draws Brazil today. If Anderson Varejao can play, this could be a real test for the slight American frontline. Tiago Splitter will be playing, and he'll be one of Boogie Cousins' chief rivals for Rookie of the Year. The game begins at 11:30 AM PT.
Germany has been impressive thus far, and it faces Australia in a key Group A battle. Spain, France, Greece and Turkey are off.

The US team has been pretty impressive so far.
Brazil might have a (really small) chance of beating them but the only teams I see having a realistic chance of upsetting Team USA are Spain (despite the loss to France) and Argentina. Scola and Delfino are thriving in the tournament and Gasol, Garbajosa and the rest of the Spaniards are a delight to watch.
There can only be one Noce!
I would've given Brazil a chance if Nene was playing
He’s a ridiculous offensive weapon and he would’ve been featured in Brazil. US would have had big trouble with him and Splitter. Varejao is good for defense, but not so much offense.

Agree. The loss of Nene was the clincher.
If he was playing, the US would have had such a headache. They wouldn’t be able to get away with using Odom as a center in their small ball lineup.
There can only be one Noce!
Still Barbosa is all over teh place and is fast enough to keep up with the U.S team, sure, if Nene had been playing Brazil would have had a better chance, but I think the game comes down to the wire
and U.S wins by 3-5 points.

Kicking it here on my iPhone. No tv no computer because of Hurricane Earl banging around outside.
So if you guys could keep filling out the details as you always do, I would especially appreciate it today.

Splitter looks big
Damn. What a catch for SAS. What’s new?
Cousins is good but he's no mana from heaven.
End of first q
Barbosa is on fire. Splitter is solid. Varejao has not played yet. Brazil up by 6
Cousins is good but he's no mana from heaven.
Durant is the only one playing well
Cuts the lead to 3
Cousins is good but he's no mana from heaven.
Halftime
Brazil up by 3.
Notes:
Durant is a beast. He has 19 points already. US would be down by more if it were not for him
US can’t defend Brazil’s pick-and-roll offense
Barbosa is on fire
It looks like Varejao won’t play
Splitter deserves all his hype. He plays big
Brazil decided to run with the US and they’re doing it with ease. Whether they can do it for two more quarters remains to be seen
Brazil is passing well
US does not look like a cohesive unit, it’s a good thing their players are talented
Really entertaining game.
Cousins is good but he's no mana from heaven.

That is going to be their achilles heel
Chandlier is in the game right now
Cousins is good but he's no mana from heaven.
US is up by 3. Billups draws a foul.
I hope Reke can learn how to post up like Chauncey in transition
Cousins is good but he's no mana from heaven.
Durant
gives the US a 6 point lead.
Splitter has 4 fouls. This might be the turning point of the game
Cousins is good but he's no mana from heaven.
End of 3rd

Only two players showed up—Durant and Billups
Rose has a so-so game
Cousins is good but he's no mana from heaven.
The 4Q has not yet started because of technical difficulties
scoreboard problem

They're inputting the scores of the players one by one
The US scorebaord didn’t take long because Durant scored most of the US’ points hahaha
Cousins is good but he's no mana from heaven.
2 of Brazil's top players--both with 4 fouls--are now back in the game

Even during internatiol play, odom plays inconsistent ball

Barbosa is playing like crap, he has missed so many threes and he still keeps on shooting.

They aren't expected to win w/o durant

Aw Barbosa, that move imakes me reminisce on the good ol days

Sorry Barbs, no overtime for you, though it would've been interesting to see ot

wow
what a game. BRA with the deliberate miss. Barbosa’s shot went in and out
Cousins is good but he's no mana from heaven.
it is sad to watch barbosa being the suns fan that I am, but I know that trading him was the right move.
I expect him to have the best seasons of his career in toronto because he is a perfect fit for them

Injured, had multiple surguries. When Jrich was suspended he played very well, but as the season went on and dragic imporoved, Barbosa became expendable
considering that he would stunt dragic’s growth.

Sure, but he is too fast for his own good, which causes al lot of unforced turnovers.
Also, he took a lot of guarded threes; in game 6 of teh wcf barbosa took a deep guarded three early in the clock which cost them a valuable possession; one that they could have used to tie the game up. I say this because last season, he hurt the team more than helped them with his inoppurtune shots out of control drives. Also he asked for more pt that would not have been available to him.
"Remember this sh*t at christmas!"-Terry Crews, The Expendables
IMO, he is more valuable and in a couple of years he will be

How in the world did US fail to get the rebound
This game almost went into overtime!
Cousins is good but he's no mana from heaven.
No real center on the court, the guy missed it towards the left; he hit it at a perfect angle to secure the board
"Remember this sh*t at christmas!"-Terry Crews, The Expendables
US needs a big man who can post up
I hate to think what would have happened had Splitter played the entire fourth
Cousins is good but he's no mana from heaven.
Chandler did a good job on him, but Coach K stuck with odom for some reason, I'd have taken him out after he missed that layup
"Remember this sh*t at christmas!"-Terry Crews, The Expendables
Defensively, yeah
But the offense was purely perimeter-oriented. Team USA will have a lot of problems once the other teams figure out how to defend that.
Cousins is good but he's no mana from heaven.
But teh USA doesn't have any otehr real power forwards otehr than odom; they have a lot of versatility with gay, durant and granger; having them play the forward spot would allow them to easily get to the basket with their dribbles drives and penetration
abilities
"Remember this sh*t at christmas!"-Terry Crews, The Expendables
They chose the wrong power forwards for this team
Chandler, Odom and Love are players that you don’t post up.
Cousins is good but he's no mana from heaven.
I can agree with that, but who would you have chosen for the team; they tokk the best power forwards available imho, because bosh chose not to play and he isn't much of a power player and amar'e
wasn’t aloowed to play because of his contract, so that doesn;t leave to many option.
"Remember this sh*t at christmas!"-Terry Crews, The Expendables
Someone along the lines of Al Jefferson or Carlos Boozer
Aldridge? Lopez? Anyone who could play with his back to the basket
Cousins is good but he's no mana from heaven.
Aldrige certainly does not play with his back to the basket, but you do make some interesting suggestions,
but boozer and lopez are the only ones that are worthwile; they are mobile and play well with USA’s running game, but Boozer chose not to and lopez injured himself. So there really wasn’t mobile, athletic fours left on the board that played well with their backs to the basket. USA wanted versatilit, mobility and athleticism.

DMC
in two years. Also FIBA will be closing the triangular lane to NBA rectangle shape. Dwight Howard will be back. Brook Lopez would be dynamite, and DMC as a low post threat (with his passing and defense) might be more valuable than either. Hope he keeps his head.

U.S will walk over those Iranians, they are Turrble at basketball, I should know

Summary
Brazil went cold and 2 of their best players were in foul trouble.
Durant and Billups carried the entire team on their shoulders
Brazil had 16 assists; USA had 9—too much isolation play
Cousins is good but he's no mana from heaven.
he was very turnover prone last season; he averaged more to's than assists

This seems to be an indication
that the US team will face some difficulties on the way. Brazil isn’t the strongest team in the tournament. Especially without Varejao.
