If the refs actually follow this rule
there could be times where Kobe might be ejected ;) (doubt that will ever happen)
"Titanic. When DiCaprio is trying to save the young lady, that was dope. When she tries to save him, and he dies, that was dope too. That whole situation was tragic. When I saw the baby in the water, frozen? I cried a little, but mostly I was pissed. I'd just had my daughter, so when I saw that frozen baby, I was like, "What the f -- !? That's bull -- !" -Ron Artest talking about his favorite movie.

i would be fine with this
If it were called equally on all players. But like the rest of the rules, stars won’t get called at all and people the refs don’t like will get hammered. In my opinion its just another tool for refs to get back at players they have issues with.

awesome!
Another rule for the refs to make a “judgement call” that directly affects the score of the game. I’m really looking forward to less emotive players, more dead ball situations and the adjustment period where referees have no idea when they should/shouldn’t make this call.

I like the concept
When they applied early in the 2005 season, the results were encouraging. Player whining was reduced. But then the league stopped pressing it, and whining and complaining from players is now worse than ever. So I applaud the league for wanting to clean up this segment of the game, as the only thing more annoying than watching our guys whine is watching the other guys whine.
The issue will be the application, and as much trouble as the refs already have calling a proper game, I don’t have a lot of confidence that they can add this to their plate and be even and effective.
They will likely apply this like bizarro variable pricing. Everybody is going to get T’d up during the Minny-New Jersey game, while whistles get swallowed when it’s L*kers-Miami. We’ll see.

My first thought was if they did a better job calling the games, this wouldn't be necessary
now the ones that do a bad job calling the game FAIRLY, have another tool to take control of the outcome.
Now, when Kobe straight arms one of our guys to get an open shot, he can get an extra point on the penalty shot when our guys comes up with a funny face because his nose is broken.

Right again
Tell us the refs are being held to account, judged or fined (publically) for not applying the rule evenly and maybe I’ll be satisfied.

It is true that
That’s not what our fans want.
regarding players complaining excessively. It is one of the things I dislike about JT.
But even worse is when refs become star of the game. And games grind to halt because of ticky tack calls, blatant miscalls, and inconsistent officiating.
There has to be a balance between player accountability and ref accountability. The best refs should barely be noticed. If the new the rules grant too much authority to refs, and they abuse that authority, games will suffer. No one wants to watch a foul fest, free throw parade masked as a basketball game.
I think the new system can work as long as refs are held just as accountable for their performance as players. This means refs need to control their emotions too. The refs need call Ts only when players are blatantly demonstrative, and do not go out of their way to perceive every emotional response as punitive and personal slight.
I can already imagine the refs with the larger egos, i.e. Joe Crawford, are loving these new rules, and our polishing up their whistles now.
By the way …
Demonstrative disagreement, such as when a player….smacks his own arm to demonstrate how he was fouled.
this should be called The No More Kobe-ing Rule, because it was instigated last year he would have been ejected 82 times.
I predict JT puts up 7/5 next year.
what a bunch a hogwash
You can’t complain at all about calls? Forget it. It will never happen, it is a part of the game from the start of organized basketball and it gives too much power to the referees.
Were you surprised to see Tyreke pulled on the last game of the season? If this passes, get used to it – not for Tyreke per se, just in general. The League had an Tim Donahy issue before – this muddies the waters when clarification is nededed.
Do you expect the players to play with no emotion? What fun is that?
I am as old skool as anyone and I get tired of the chest thumping and “the scream”. I also don’t understand tattoos. So what, that is my problem. The question is: Is it detrimental to the game? No. What is more of an issue is Joey Crawford T-ing up every one who looks at him funny and then having Ron Garrettson smiling at walking away. What message are you sending? And this isn’t just players that this effects. Do you want all the coaches to just sit there and stare into space? Do you want Stan Van Gundy to vibrate and explode? Paul Westphal to just stand there and smile? For the players: Tim Duncan – stop staring. Kevin Garnett – stop swearing. Kobe Bryant and LeBron James – STFU and walk away. Besides the fact that it will never happen as described if it were implemented as written it would be like watching the game on Haldol. No thanks.
This is a new form of ridiculous.
ack, of hogwash not a hogwash

I would rather see SB Nation get the ability for thread post edits than give NBA referees more power to sway a game.

I don't
If people had the power to edit, trolls would start arguments and then go back and edit themselves so the person they’re arguing with looks like an ass.

I think (or think I think) but my keyboard on the other hand...
I just don’t want NBA referees to have more arbitrary influence. Particularly as there is no apparent need for contrition for any misdeeds nor any public punishment imposed by the League.
Complaining is not the same as whining .As it stands now, you can’t complain publicly after the game or you get fined. You can’t complain during the game as you get a techinical foul assessed and therefore you get fined and give the opposition the opportunity to score. Technical foul assessments are already arbitrary. I use the Tyreke in the last game of the season example above. All of a sudden, Boom! two T’s and he gets tossed. Why was that allowed? What if the Kings were in a playoff race? What if Tyreke hadn’t secured his record 20-5 – 5? And on top of that, you can’t complain? No, sir – that is not right..
The one constant “concern” of nearly every NBA contest is the officiating. It a thankless job and it performed by humans, and I believe in most all cases, to the best of their abilities. Missing calls or non calls are an acceptable part of the game.
Can the NBA make their officials more like what we saw at FIBA with the lack of complaining? Yes. Is this good. IMHO – no. There is a middle ground but assigning arbitrary rules is not the answer.

Something has to be done
Instead of handing out more technicals, maybe the league should tally every complaint and negative gesture that a player makes during a game, add them up, and fine them a certain amount per action. It could be a new stat line and we would be able to compare the biggest whiners across the league. It could be a new category in fantasy basketball.
uhhhh
i doubt they will strictly obey those rules. just look at the palming and traveling rule ;violated at least several times a game, yet rarely reprimanded for it
Then that's even worse.
It should be all or nothing. Like every rule.

Isn't this just the NBA's way of getting more money?
Make more players pay more fines.
I’m just surprised they didn’t add sweating to that list.
This.
Or they could actually call fouls when fouls are committed, stop giving preferential treatment to stars, and then not have as many whiners
m*****f***ing c***s***ing peanut butter and jelly!! f*** f*** f***!!!
The Stars would still whine just like they do now when they do finally get called for a foul.
