The Kings battle the Suns for 2nd place in the Pacific.

Golden State added Lee which means they still can’t defend, and their new coach was the Defensive Coach under Nelson. Curry showed he’s a liability on the defensive end with the US team. And, their #1 Pick had wrist surgury and is expected to miss 6 months. Last place in the Pacific.

Clippers add last years #1 Griffin and this years #1 Aminu, but not much of anything else. Unless you want to consider Del Negro and upgrade, which I do, but not enough to improve this group. They ended up with nothing for Camby except cap space which they didn’t use. And, let Gooden walk because they had Griffin. But, Griffin need to average 15/10 just to match Gooden’s output from last season. Slight improvement, but 4th in the Pacific.

The Suns replaced Amare with Hakim Warrick and Hedo. Hedo’s point/forward skills aren’t needed with Nash & Dragic on the team, and I don’t see him playing much PF. Warrick is a good player and the Sun’s added two 2nd round PF’s but that’s not going to be enough to replace Amare. The Sun’s could still take 2nd place, but everything will defend on Nash’s health (back problems), and PW’s ability to get his young core to play together at both ends of the court. My bet is on the toughness of Nash. Kings 3rd and Sun’s 2nd. But, neither team will make the playoffs.

I agree that we battle the Suns for #2

I think we have a chance and am guessing we may pull it off. Is it enough to make the playoffs? If things go well it could be close. I’m saving my predictions until I see this team play some games though.

Just divided my tix this morning with my partners so I’ll be going to the first pre-season game against the Suns and the Home opener as well.

4th

They will overtake the Dubs or the Clips, but not both. The Suns are no worse than a .500 club if Nash as long as Nash is healthy.

I agree about the Suns, but the Clips?

They were a strange team last year, going 21-20 at home and 8-33 on the road. They also won 14 of their 30 games against the East but only 15 of their 52 games against the West. I guesss I don’t have much faith in Del Negro to get them to play consistently. And, other than Griffin, I don’t see where they got better. Ryan Gomes doesn’t seem to be any better then Rasual Butler at the 3, and DeAndre Jordon stills needs to prove he’s not the 2nd coming of Mikki Moore. And, their backcourt players are a little undersized with all 5 between 6-1 & 6-4.

With new coaches and only one real improvement in the lineup, I don’t see either GS or the Clips making big jumps in wins this season. I see GS regressing some 24-27 wins and the Clips improving to maybe 30-33 wins with the Kings at least winning 35.

How much can the Dubs really regress

after adding David Lee and not having a record number of injuries?

I hope they do, but I can’t see them losing more games than last year.

I disagree, I think that they could lose more games this season

In basketball, the whole is not always the sum of the parts. So, whether or not Lee makes a major impact is still in doubt. Besides you have to look at the team and it’s competetion. Who got better and by how much. The teams that likely got segnificantly worse are probably the Suns and maybe Denver if Melo leaves. Other than that most teams stayed the same or got slightly better.

The Suns didn’t get that much worse that they’re going to lose to GS. And, the Kings & Clips got better, so I don’t see GS winning more games than they did last year against Pacific division rivals. Other than Minny, I don’t see a worse team in the league than GS. And, with a new coach, and a new direction (more bigs) toward a more conventional type of game, GS is going to struggle.

Getting back to Lee, if I’m not mistaken the Kings beat NY twice when they had Lee and we had Hawes. Now, maybe Lee can play PF with Biedrins, but I see the Kings bigs dominating the paint, and deminishing Lee’s contributions. Plus Golden State still has Ellis and no interior or exterior defense.

Not to mention that the Dubs are horribly thin off the bench this year

They gave up a lot for Lee and still won’t defend. Any injuries to starters at all and they’re in more trouble.

Yeah and maybe with Nellie gone,

having to feed the post to Lee instead of running around like jackrabbits throwing up threes will cut their scoring down quite a bit. And, yes, combine that with their lack of D and they’re screwed.

agreed.

One of the two will implode. We will just have to wait and see. The clips will probably ride the Griffin train to another year of around 30 wins. Until I see some positives from this new and relatively unknown coaching staff, my money is on the warriors to crash and burn.

I think we pass both the Dubs and Clips

The Dubs may finish last in the West, a close call with Minnie. I don’t believe (as HT says) that the Clips really got any better – and I think we did. The Suns? We’ll see.

I'm already praying that they Dubs finish last and the Kings jump them in the lottery.

That’s my fall-back prayer, I mean. My first prayer is that we win the championship and trade for GS’s pick.

Did the Kings get better when they obtained Evans?

Are we projecting that the Kings might get even better because of Cousins? Then you have to think that the addition of “rookie” Blake Griffin will make the Clippers better. If Eric Gofdon doesn’t miss another 20 games this year, that will make them better.

It is certainly possible that the Kings could pass both the Clips and the Dubs, maybe an even money chance. But I will believe it when I see the Kings winning four out of ten games after the all star break, something that they have not accomplished in awhile.

Its a new year

and a different team. We’ll look a LOT different with all those low post options, offensively and defensively come the end of games.

As HT says somewhere about the Clippers

Griffin needs to replace the numbers of both Gooden and Camby. I don’t see it. If healthy I have no doubt he puts up some good numbers but Gooden was a 15/10 guy – and Camby’s D? He won’t come close. I have no faith in Baron Davis.

both Gooden and Camby?

I thought Gooden only came in after Camby got traded. Pretty sure they were not there together (at least not for more than a few days)

"Once again i still dont get it. We have the best backcourt in the league. 1 of the best front courts in the West. A nice bench. What team in the west cant we compete with besides the Lakers? What team in the west u guys can look at and say damn they’re much better than us? Seriously? Not being a homer at all." ~ J-Ridah's Golden State Warriors analysis.

I believe the Clips will improve with Griffin

but not as much as the Kings will improve with Dalembert, Cousins, Whiteside and a full season of Landry.

The Kings only needed to match the Clips success against the East last season, to pass up the Clips in the standings last year. I think the Kings will play .500 ball against the East and in the Pacific division, and that’s an 9 game improvement right there. Add in the fact that the Kings only play Por & Dal 3 games this season after going 0-8 against those team last season, and I can see the Kings winning at least 10 more games this season. So, the Clips would have to win 6 more to tie the Kings, and I don’t see that happening.

47 wins?

Are my eyes playing tricks on me, or did the sbnation writer predict 47 wins for the Kings? That such a bold and positive prediction is coming from a non Kings fan is exciting. I doubt we see this kind of jump, but with our front court upgrades, a weakened pacific divison, and an aging Southwest division, who knows?

For now, my expectations remain low, but to quote my favorite orphan-using-the-supernatural-to-help-Tony Danza-win-baseball-games movie, “it could happen!”

Prada is a blogger for Washington,

and while most of his assessments so far seem to show that he has a great deal of knowledge about the NBA, he’s the only one to go that high about the Kings. Most of the better know professional writers are guessing more around 30 or less.

So, if you want to believe that Prada knows more than everyone else, go ahead. He might be. ;)

I have them at third

Better than the Dubs for sure, and possibly better than the Clips. The Clippers are a hard team for me to forecast. They’ve got the talent to be pretty good, but they’ve always lacked the motivation and luck needed to take it to the next level. I have them at 30-35 wins.

And I have the Kings at 30-40 so we’ll see.

I have said in the past that I will never again bet against a Steve Nash led team. I didn’t expect them to make the playoffs last year, yet they made it to the WCF.

Don't feel bad about doubting the Suns last year, a lot of people did

I think in one of my scouting reports last season, I said that the Suns would make it deep into the playoffs, and more than a few people told me I was crazy.

As far as the Clips luck, I think they make their own bad luck. They gave away Camby for Outlaw and Blake and then let them both walk in Free Agency. The did the same with Gooden who was a 15/10 guy for them after joining the team. Now, they let him walk because they have Griffin, but Griffin starts out in a hole because he’s got to average 15/10 just to make up for the loss of Gooden.

Griffin is going to give them rebounds, but I don’t see him giving them 20/10 from the PF spot in his 1st year and coming off injury. I like any combo of our bigs against Kaman & Griffin. At least this year.

I put you guys at third.

Not enough horsepower to catch PHX this year, or LA. But it could be close, 2nd place could happen. It all depends on Cousins, I think. And if Pau Gasol goes out, I think LA is cooked. The cliff is closer than they think in LA.

If Cousins is what I think he is, Landry will run wild as well. But someone will need to pass the ball inside. Is that guy Evans? That’s what I’m not as sure about. I know he logged 5 assists per game (how could anyone who reads this blog forget), but they seemed to come mostly off his drive, in my recollection, anyway.

Hmm. Guess I better go write a Rockets preview.

Actually, he finished the last 2 months of the season averaging over 7 assts per game

but, the vast majority 5 of 7 were to outside shooters for long 2’s and 3’s. I think because he always takes it to the rim inside 14 ft, defenses wait closer to the rim and therefore alley-oops and shovel passes to our bigs around the basket are more dangerous than just taking it to the rim himself. Plus, we tend to clear out the lane when he has the ball.

I think he needs to make the short 14 ft jumpers at a high percentage, to force defenses to come out and defend him more often. And, the Kings need to send more cutters through the lane off the weakside. The one – four spread filled a need last season and was good experience for Evans. But, if he’s to be a top PG in this league, he needs to run the Pick & Roll better, and set his bigs up for easy baskets with improved ball handling and passing.

He's a special player, no doubt.

The mid range pull up would make him devastating, of course. But Sacramento now has an impressive frontcourt, and one that can score. Cousins will be up and down, I think, but more up than down. Getting the ball into the bigs is the key question. I think Evans will manage it, but it’s a point of concern I’d think.
