pretty cold stuff
i think casspi should be more proud that he has a mural in our capitol city, then ashamed of what one deluded person thinks.
I don't think they should cover it up.
They need people to see this, not just hide it. Otherwise, people who don’t know the story will wonder why a sheet is hanging over the mural.
Fix it as soon as possible, but until then, this kind of ignorance should be seen by the vast percentage of people that find it repugnant, so everyone understands that as delightful and integrated as our community happens to be, there is still plenty of this type of mentality out there.

Only a racist would think it is funny. A teenager is old enough to be held responsible.
Pretty sure they will be held responsible regardless of age or how you want to classify the person's intent.

There are times and places for these where they could be taken more lightly than others.
For example, that one I drew on my history teacher’s whiteboard. That was okay. This is not.

I was raised in the area
But this kind of bullshit is precisely why my parents and the Kings are the only things I still feel connected to in Sacramento. There are idiots everywhere, but the lack of culture/diversity in Sac seems to breed an especially hateful kind. Shame.

Don't fault an entire community...
based on the actions of one racist. And I hope you can distinguish between a lack of cultural diversity and overt racist behavior.

“diversity” =/= “enlightenment”

Didn't mean to implicate the whole community
As I suggested, my family still lives there. I appreciate that living with something doesn’t mean condoning it. But while I love and respect many individuals in Sacramento, I absolutely hate aspects of the larger culture.
As for lack of cultural diversity versus overt racism, I can distinguish the two, but I also believe that the latter is a product of the former. It’s the biggest reason I won’t return to live in Sacramento. But, of course, I respect others’ reasons for living there. Sorry if that sounded smug.

Where do you live now? Salt Lake City?
About the only places you don’t see this sort of thing are in homogeneous communities. No sense getting riled up with the spray paint about Jews or blacks when you’ve never seen one in person.
Rocks are free, and slingshots easily stolen. And for a limited time, every third person who follows me on Twitter (andy_sims) gets a free ice cream cone.

Let me try to be more clear
I’m putting non-prejudiced people on the defensive, which isn’t my intention.
I’m white. I’m from a socially homogenous (white, middle class) suburb of Sacramento. What I call Sacramento is actually the greater Sacramento area. I should’ve stated that earlier. I now live in LA, and, yes, I know that LA has its share of stupid jerks, too.
Prejudice is a problem wherever it exists, and it exists everywhere. But that doesn’t give us license to bury our heads in the sand and chalk any act of idiocy up as random. Proclivity to this sort of behavior isn’t inborn, it’s learned from society on a macro and micro scale, as well as from influential individuals like parents. In my experience, the best way to combat those negative influences is by getting to know people from diverse backgrounds, and that can be hard to do in certain parts of the Sacramento area. But that doesn’t mean if you live in one of those places you’re automatically racist – hopefully you were never force-fed enough prejudice to overcome your natural supply of reason. But this moron was, and so were a lot of the kids I grew up with. So I can’t help but prescribe more cultural diversity for Sacramento. Maybe bigots only represent a small segment of Sacramento society, but – as this incident shows – their negative impact on the culture can be overwhelming.
Wow. Really, Andy?
Salt Lake City, and Utah in general, are not homogenous. There are many cultures represented, and for the most part, racism doesn’t play much of a role, except, as you’ll find everywhere, the small, ignorant minority.
Far from "never seeing one in person, " my youngest son’s best friend since he was two is black. My 12-year-old’s favorite cousin to hang out with is black. We have a Krishna temple in our town where we attend events like the Festival of Colors, and festivals all over that celebrate other cultures. My boys’ school has a required social studies class on world religions that invites clergy from mosques, temples and churches to speak to our students.
So before you smack down an entire city or culture, you might consider actually visiting and seeing for yourself what kind of people live there.

Generalizations
So based on the actions of one person the entire metropolitan area spews hate? This is an ignorant comment as Sacramento is one of the most diverse cities in America, don’t believe me then read this………. http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,340694,00.html . You really must not spend much time in sacramento if you believe what you just wrote pal.
Yeah
I think that the entire metropolitan area spews hate. That’s what I think. You and all of your loved ones are bigots, and I’m not because I don’t live there anymore.
Obviously, I don’t know all of the individuals living in the area, so I have no choice but to generalize. Maybe my generalization about Sacramento’s diversity is ignorant statistically. But would you actually argue that Sacramento has as culturally vital populations of Jews, African Americans, Latinos, homosexuals, immigrants, etc. as cities like NYC, LA, SF, Chicago, DC, or even comparably-sized cities like Miami, New Orleans, or Atlanta? If so, you must not spend much time outside Sacramento.
My point is simply that more access to traditionally marginalized cultures prevents prejudice against them. As the capital of a highly-diverse, highly-progressive state (qualities that I believe make CA the best state in the union), Sacramento should be home to considerably fewer redneck pricks than it is.
Again
You must not have read the article i posted from time. I have lived in Los Angeles for four years now so ya i actually spend about 80% of my time outside of Sacramento. If you think la is a better model to strive for than sac well then we just have to agree to disagree. Everything down here is segragated as you know where every ethnic section is (East la is mexican, watts is blacks, chino and irvine is asian). Sacramento is a much more integrated city. Also you have to explain using a bullshit term like “culturaly vital populations”, what does that even mean?
Racism is bad and I dont think anyone is going to defend putting a swastika on the face of a Jewish player or any other act of legitimate racism. The fact that you are really making these ignorant comments about Sacramento that have no basis in statistics or reality suggests to me you have bought into the Los Angeles Mentality that everything is better down here because it just is.
And finally just to point out, you are griping about the “bigotry” from the Sacramento populace, and closing your reply you say “Sacramento should be home to considerably fewer redneck pricks than it is”. So using a term like redneck must be completely acceptable in your “multiculturalist progressive” criteria for morality, a term used to stereotype and dehumanize rural white people as stupid and backwards. Sorry but this does de-legitimize your entire argument.
I didn’t feel the need to read an article claiming that Sacramento is the most diverse city in America. Another generality that I believe in is that Time is often reductive and misleading.
I created the bullshit term to indicate that I think there’s more to diversity than demographic percentages. If that makes me seem like a flat-earther to you, so be it.
I’m a white person from a rural area. I don’t think the term redneck implies the inferiority of my whole race (or even just the members of my race that come from rural areas), the way that slurs do. I think it pokes fun at the people from that group that actually are stupid and backwards. But I agree that it’s a bad word since not all people with sunburnt necks are that way, and I admit that I only used it to get a rise. *Tangent: I had a similar argument with a woman that I’m dating about a certain c-word that rhymes with runt. She said it’s derogatory toward women. I said that it doesn’t imply anything about the gender as a whole, only the person or people it’s used against. Calling someone a dick doesn’t mean that you think all men are inferior, right? I got in trouble for that, so maybe I need to reconsider where I think the line between bad words and offensive slurs is. Regardless, I don’t think it’s in the same ballpark as the crime that this thread is about.
Sorry but you do have a choice not to generalize
If you read the article you would have noticed that
Of the city’s inhabitants, 41% are non-Hispanic white, 15.5% are black, 22% are Hispanic and 17.5% are Asian/Pacific Islander.
Non-Hispanic whites still account for 69% of the U.S. population and maintain a predominant share of the nation’s fiscal and political power.
Those are facts. Go nuts arguing there are more diverse cities than Sacramento if you want but statistically speaking it is a very diverse city. Nice job toning down the rhetoric with your “redneck prick” line.
Because talent? You want to add a guy like boozer because hes talented? I’m sorry i just don’t see that as a valid reason. -- fffindeed

/shrug aka Idiots abound
Sacramento is no different. Unfortunately. This could be a racial slur or a religious statement; it could have been done to a mural of Tyreke or DeMarcus. It could happen in a small chapel in Miami or to mural in New York or Tel Aviv.
To pretend otherwise is naive.Hate or Ugly Stupidity are interchangeable words we use that hurt most when they are seen in action. This has been recognized for what it is and we have experienced the attendant embarrassment and anger. In my opinion, this is an incident that is best left forgotten

No, not forgotten
And I agree, when something like this happens, it should be broadcast, shared and discussed. But I disagree with anyone that says that this is a symptom of the community at large.
Further, I respectfully disagree with those that say that Sacramento is not diverse. One of the things that I loved about growing up here is that everyone lives everywhere. There is not the cultural polarization that you can find in some larger cities. Yes, an economic divide has developed, but overall the racial divide that permeates many other cities really doesn’t exist (at least not nearly as much) here.
SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!
Fair enough
Sacramento routinely grades out as one of the most integrated communities in the country, which is hardly the same thing as saying we live in a redneck-free haven of tolerance and enlightenment.

“So, under certain circumstances, depending on who the perpetrator is, this is okay with you?
There is no kind way to say this, but that may be one of the most ignorant things I’ve ever read."
What I implied was wait to the police investigation so we can know whom the perpetrator before broad statements of California, Sacramento, nba culture are made that would cause more social damage.
The background of the perpetrator is irrelevant.
Who did this is almost irrelevant next to the fact that it happened. Whether the moron is caught or not, the community needs to address the crime, and not write it up to nutty, youthful hijinks.
The crime does not reflect on the city as much as ignoring or rationalizing it would.

Christ, you're ignorant
The facts are, some anti-Semite, or some moron too stupid to understand the meaning of the swastika purposely went out, found a mural with the image of a Jew on it, and defaced it.
Those are the facts that matter. I made no wild speculations. The crime and a discussion of such are more important than necessarily catching the person who did it, although I hope he is caught. Their background is completely beside the point, despite your original assertion to the contrary.

Obviously they understood what a swastika meant or they would not have used it. This was not stupidity. It was an act of hate. It is a hate crime. There is way around that.
Not to say this tarnishes all of Sac. Racism exists everywhere and, on the whole, Sac is a better place than many.

All Kevin S is saying is:
Why make statements about California, Sacramento, and NBA culture in general having a lot of hate when you know nothing about the perpetrator. Leave it as a random act of hate. This isn’t a poetic act that describes the state of cultural relations of a city.
What Kevin S was later saying is that claiming this event was just a product of a hateful city, is in fact a form of hate/ignorance on the city itself.

I agree
Using a swastika on the image of an Israeli/Jewish player, it is almost impossible to look at it from a different angle.
But strange stuff does happen occasionally.
In an incident in Amsterdam in the nineties, a monument regarding Auschwitz made of glass was smashed to pieces. A huge outrage followed over the antisemitism of the act, and over racism in the Netherlands in general.
After a while, the police caught the culprit: one of the laborers on the monument (a glazier), who had a mental disorder, smashed it because he claimed he was not paid sufficiently…

From the Bee Kings blog:
Reached at his family home in Yavne, Israel, a few minutes ago, Kings forward Omri Casspi said he was “hurt” upon learning that a mural featuring his likeness was defaced with a swastika. The incident at 16th and R Street in midtown is being investigated as a possible hate crime by the local authorities.
“It’s been all over the news over here,” said Casspi. “Everybody’s talking about it. It’s hurtful to think that this is 2010, and there are still people like that out there. I almost don’t know what to say. It’s probably just some idiot who wants some publicity. But I know the people in Sacramento, and they have been wonderful to me. I know they must feel bad about this. Same thing with the Kings. I’ll just let the police handle this and focus on having a great season.”

yeah unfortunately there is still so much ignorance and I despise what kids today are becoming
it seems like hate is now being accepted. As long as you find it funny its okay. How someone would find it funny to put a swastika on the face of someone who means so much to Israel and Jews as well. Really I don’t think the punishment or outcry should be any different if this is a dumb teenager or a real fucking racist evil bastard. Whats the difference between them. Both are willing to do this and okay with it. Both don’t seem to care about all the suffering that was endured and what it truly represents. It amazes me in society how we keep words and symbols like this alive. Why turn it into a joke? Would the people that were in concentration camps find this funny? Do you find it funny what they had to experience? because if you are amused by the slaughtering of another human being, an entire group of people, you truly are a vile vile person and deserve no better treatment.
Its the same thing with the N word
