I could write up a super specific analysis of stats like I see some in here do, but I think the recent improvement over the last month or so is due to the fact that Westphal has finally settled on not only a line up but a bench rotation. It took him almost two months into the season to accomplish this (most other NBA head coaches were able to achieve this in training camp, but I digress).
I think all the great things that go along with repetition and the players understanding their roles are starting to pay dividends. Stability in a sports team is a beautiful thing. The only line up changes Westphal has made are those that are due to injuries (Garcia, and now perhaps Thompson) but those type of line up changes are out of anybody's control.
So now that Westphal has a line up and rotation how good can this team be? I don't know, but it sure is fun watching the last week. They have a brutal schedule but maybe that is what this team needs. Who knows maybe they are up to the challenge. If Demarcus keeps playing like he is we stand a fighting chance that's for sure!
I have been down on Westphal a lot this season, but to my defense in previous posts I commented that if he could find some way to find a set line up and rotation I thought he could pull the job off (although I did not think he would ever accomplish this). I really hope that I stay wrong and the team gels with Westphal. I really don't want to go through yet another coaching change. I hope I have to eat all my words from earlier this season and the Kings finish strong.
So in all I am writing to celebrate the winning and to preemptively write that hopefully I was wrong on Westphal and the team takes off with him as HC. I hate it when people only write when things are bad and sheepishly go away when their predictions or rants are proven to be wrong. I'll gladly eat my words on Westphal if this team keeps repeating last week! GO KINGS!
