Yet another season preview...
By show of hands, who else is sick of this lockout? Normally around this time of year we'd be getting jazzed up about training camp, preseason, and the new big name free agent acquisitions that the Maloofs brought into town (or maybe not), but instead we're subjected to following national reporters on Twitter in hopes of catching some scrap of optimism from board meetings that have thusfar been anything but positive. To this point on StR, I have been limited to commenting on the work of others rather than putting out any entries myself, so with this post I'd like to join those of you who have been bold enough to share more than just a brief snippet of your opinions.
As any follower of the Sacramento Kings can attest, the last few years haven't been all that pretty. Certainly there have been some high points: The awarding of the ROY to Tyreke Evans, the selection and subsequent brilliance of DeMarcus Cousins, a certain game-winning shot against the Memphis Grizzlies, and (my personal favorite) the sweep of Jimmermania all across Northern California. But we've had more than our fair share of challenges. A 17-win season, followed by a 25-win season over the last couple of years, and the unspeakable idea of moving to Anaheim. But through it all, we have persevered and remained one of the most loyal and dedicated fanbases in all of professional sports. This year, I believe we will reap our rewards.
There are a number of reasons for that premise, but I will limit them to 4: Tyreke, DeMarcus, Thornton, and Jimmer.
1. Tyreke Evans is healthy again. Though his shooting performance (9-25) in the recent Team Philly vs. Team Melo pick-up game was abysmal, he displayed an explosiveness that we haven't seen since his rookie year. His shot, despite the hype on his efforts to improve it, still needs some work, but his isolation dribbling is unsurpassed by just about anyone in the league. He has the combination of footwork, handles, quickness, size, and strength to blow by nearly any defender he faces. While he still has areas of his game that he can improve, expect to see the dominant Tyreke we used to know on the floor this year.2. DeMarcus Cousins will be better than ever this year. Much was made by the national media about his outbursts and temper tantrums, and justifiably so, but Cousins was also under a level of scrutiny that made it difficult for him not to fail. While immature, his attitude concerns are somewhat overblown, and this young man has a very real desire to win. Based on what sparse pick-up game video content I have seen, he appears to have trimmed up and become a little more nimble and explosive than he was in his rookie season. I anticipate an explosion out of the young big this year, creating a powerful one-two punch with Mr. Evans.
3. Marcus Thornton is an excellent backcourt mate to Tyreke, and provides another dynamic scoring threat in the Kings guard lineup. Averaging over 20 ppg in his time "rocking the purple", Thornton can provide spacing and scoring that the Kings desperately need. Tyreke can slash and drive with the best of them, and Demarcus possesses a level of passing and scoring skill that is rare among men his size, but limiting the Kings to only their scoring abilities will hamper the team. With Thornton as another scoring threat, the defense must play DeMarcus and Tyreke honestly, and he provides a kick-out option that can consistently hit the outside shot. His defense is not nearly as bad as advertised, so whether he is starting the game or coming off the bench, Thornton will never be a liability to this team.
4. Jimmer Fredette is perhaps the only reason that Thornton may start the game in a seat. While many have projected the rookie's ceiling as a volume-scorer off the bench, I respectfully disagree. As a current BYU student, I was able to see Jimmer up close in nearly every game he suited up for in his last two years as a Cougar, and I can tell you one thing for certain: The kid knows the game. He is a very high iq player, and will quickly pick up on the NBA game and adapt to a new role as a facilitator. Tyreke, for all his strengths, is a guard that needs a shooter and passer playing by his side. Jimmer is already among the elite in one of those categories, and I believe he can grow into the other. In the recent "Jimmer's All-Star" game hosted at the Marriott Center in Provo, Jimmer finished the game with 27 points and 10 assists. While pick-up game stats should rarely be given any credence, it still speaks to the fact that Jimmer is trying to distribute the ball and run an offense. He complements both Tyreke and Thornton very well, and I believe he'll both earn and receive a significant share of the backcourt playing time in his rookie season.
The hope for the Kings in 2011-2012 is of course based upon the hope that we even have a season. But I don't think you can be a Kings fan without being either an optimist or a masochist, and after the Anaheim saga I'm definitely one of the former. So here's to the Kings getting another season underway and becoming one of the most intriguing young teams in all of basketball!

Strangely enough, even though baseball season is over – I don’t really miss the NBA.
I'm with you Otis
With football in full swing the only thing I’m missing is some of the interesting discussions about players and matchups.

My counter arguements
1) I’m extremely excited that Tyreke looks healthy and energetic. I’m extremely disappointed that he’s still fading away on his long jumpers and doesn’t seem to have improved his left hand layups.
2) DeMarcus does look slimmed down and more explosive. I’ll hold off on him and Reke being a “powerfull one two punch” until I see the team start to play more as a group rather then individuals executing ISO’s.
3) Marcus Thornton is right now a better all around version of Tyreke. He’s faster and although he doesn’t have Tyreke’s size, he gets to the rim and scores but he has a better outside shot. There has been alot of opinion on how well they played together when Reke returned to the lineup at the end of the season.
In April
Reke 7 games 17pts on 38% field 25% from 3, with 6 assists and 5 rebs
Marcus 8 games 18.6pts on 40% field 18% from 3 with 3.8 assists and 5 rebs
The were a combined 107 for 258 shots or 41%. That is a horrible shooting percentage for a starting backcourt. And they combined for 79 mpg. Thorton had a great March but once Tyreke returned Marcus shooting dropped considerably in April. I think it will return but until it does, having a backcourt that shoots from range that poorly isn’t going to scare anybody. They’ll just drop back, clog the lane again, and make them prove that they can hit the outside shot.
4) Jimmer will start slowly but with a ball dominate backcourt mate like Tyreke or even Thornton, there won’t be that much pressure to do too much. I like Tyreke and Jimmer as the starters because teams won’t leave JImmer open to double team Reke, and it will give Evans someone to kick out to in the backcourt who’s a real 3pt threat. Reke will still get his 35-40 mpg, with Thornton filling in as the slasher threat when Reke rests. I see Marcus getting 30-36 mpg and Jimmer getting 24-30 as the starter along side Reke.
All and all the talent continues to increase. But, how the talent is used and how it will work together is still an unknown. Let’s hope PW Knows.

Good write up but I disagree on 1 point.
Marcus 100% guaranteed will not start the season on the bench. There is no way after the performance that he put up last year as a King that he will take a back seat to Jimmer under PW’s watch. Down the road possibly Jimmer could take a starting spot but I just do not see it happening anytime soon.
People seem to forget… Marcus was CLUTCH last year, how many game deciding baskets did he make as a King? I still have all the games recorded on my DVR and I can see there was at least 5 ,including his rally at the Kings vs Lakers game(last game of the season) that forced an Overtime from 30 points back (DMC got thrown out and Tyreke was non-existent).
His defense is decent, he can hit the 3, his free throw % was good, he gets fouled often heading for the basket, he could distribute the ball and feed the post, he leads by example and has a competitors attitude.
Jimmer may have skills but he is no MT23, not right now anyways. I’m sorry but Jimmer is just wayyyyyyyyy overhyped. The only way I see Jimmer starting this season is if PW puts Tyreke at the small forward.
I actually agree with you on that point, I think Thornton does start the season next to Reke
What I am suggesting is that Jimmer could take that starting role from him at some point during the season. Are Jimmer’s skills overhyped? I suppose that depends on who you ask. If you’re reading just about any credible online writer, there aren’t too many people that view him as much more than a bench scorer. If you’re talking to fans, well, there are some who think he’ll be the next Pete Maravich and some who think he’s the next Adam Morrison, but since when do you trust fans for honest and objective opinions?
My belief is that he can be a quality starting point guard in this league, and that playing on a team that has a talented slasher (Tyreke) and a dominant big man (Cousins) can mask many of the weaknesses he has and exploit his strengths. My comparison for him throughout this process has been Mike Bibby, and Mike Bibby was in a very similar situation playing for a team that worked to his strengths and masked his weaknesses.
Does that mean he’ll begin the season as a starter? No, and I don’t think he should for all the reasons you just outlined. Thornton is a very good player and he deserves to play. But I think Jimmer could eventually take the reigns (though not necessarily all the minutes, as mentioned by HT above) as the starter with the reasoning being fit as much as it is talent.
Thornton saved our season last year, and we might not have won 17 games without him.
But, in 2 seasons he’s only started 40 games with 23 coming in Sacramento. And, in his 146 games he is only averaging 25 mpg and only 22 mpg in his 119 games in NO. So, comming off the bench wouldn’t be unnatural for him.
He’s a career 37% from 3 on about 2.5 attempts per game. but Jimmer shot 41.8% over the last 2 seasons on 5.5 attempts per game. And, while Marcus is a 80% FT shooter averaging about 2.5 per game, Jimmer is 89.3% on 7.3 attempts per game. Of course I don’t expect Jimmer to have anywhere near that number of attempts playing in the backcourt with Tyreke.
Jimmer is just the better pure shooter, while Marcus is the faster more explosive slasher who’s going to get the ball down court quicker than anybody maybe even Thomas. And, as I tried to point out above, Tyreke without an outside shot needs to be in the backcourt with a pure shooter not another slasher. I can definitely see Marcus and Jimmer with 30 mpg each at the very start of the season and Tyreke with 36. And, I like Jimmer in the backcourt with Evans, and Thornton backing up Reke more than Jimmer.
The lockout may play a bigger part in the decision, since Jimmer might not have time to get the experience he needs to start along side Tyreke. But, as far as matching talent with Tyreke, I like Jimmer better.

Really hard to say because I think there's a huge question mark of Jimmer's ability to handle NBA caliber defenses
Or defend against NBA caliber offensive players.
But if Jimmer’s skills translate fairly from college, I’d agree he seems like a more natural fit in the backcourt with Tyreke.
I’m really interested to see these three guys on the floor together in certain situations.
