Keys to Success (or failure)
I believe most of our cap space will go to Thorton and no major signing beyond that. So assuming we don't land a top teir player and our team remains relatively unchanged from last season here is what I think needs to happen for a successful season.
1) DMC needs to dominate down low.
2) Donte Greene needs to finally earn the starting SF spot and play consistently.
3) Tyreke needs to drive to the basket and dish the ball off to a Ferdette or Thorton for open shots.
4) The MOST important thing --- Westphal has to finally make a decision about his line up and keep it for more than three games!!!
If all of the above happens I think Sacramento can compete for an 8th seed. However quite easily none of the above happens and we get to watch Westphal shuffle line ups all season (and not because of injury), DMC shoot 12-18 foot jumpers, Tyreke drive and shoot all season and Donte cheer from the bench while Salmons becomes a black hole on offense holding the ball and taking his jumpers. If all that happens it will be a LONG season, even though it will only be 66 games.
Lastly how many would be on board if the Kings signed Marc Gasol if it meant we could not sign Thorton? I think I know the answer, but would love to hear everyone's opinion if they have one.
Welcome back NBA, I look forward to the season!

Have a feeling if the Kings only sign Thornton they might be a tad bit below the salary minimum correct?
They will sign others
But I don’t think they will be a top teir type of player. Just bench players. I could be wrong (and I hope I am) but I just don’t see them being big spenders on the open market.
I had a dream
that the Kings signed Big Baby Davis to a 3 year deal. I wanted to throw up.

I am consistent about this too...
As last year I was under the suspicion that the Maloofs would say they would spend their cap money, until after the new CBA, then they would come out and say they need to keep their cap money to sign our own free agents next season and beyond when their rookie contracts are up. It won’t be long before that becomes the montra from Grant and the owners.
Again I hope I’m wrong and they find a way to get a guy like Marc Gasol and Thorton. That would be a great off-season.
I hope Donte will develop into a Dorell Wright type of player
where he plays good d and makes three pointers consistently
I don't know
He’s shown no signs of being anything other than a career back-up – if he’s lucky

I disagree
I think he’s shown signs of being a very good defender. The trouble with Donte is that he is very inconsistent. If he is able (and I know I wrote “if”) to be consistent with his shot and shot selection along with being a solid defender I think he will earn that starting position. I believe Donte is capable, but he just hasn’t done it to this point. I really hope this is the year he is able to make the transistion. At the end of last year I thought he played well down the stretch. So I guess we’ll see.

Heard Sam on KHTK today and he said the Kings must spend abt $20 mil on rookies/FAs during the month before the season starts in order to reach the salary cap minimum. He said Jimmer will get abt $2mil, I’m guessing Thornton will be abt $7mil, that leaves an add’l $11mil that they MUST spend before the season starts. That should be fun…
Eddy Curry is still available, right?

Great...
watch Gasol and Nene both resign with their teams and we’re stuck with throwing money at a scrub.

I really think the key to real success for the Kings lies in the development of Evans and Cousins as Elite NBA talents and have a desire to work towards a common goal of winning.
That Petrie strikes a deal with the cap room the Kings have. I just don’t see the Kings as being able to attract the great free agent types that they need, there only hope to get those talents is to overpay them and that option doesn’t appeal to me.
Who knows what will happen with ownership and the arena deal, cynically the lockout has shown us what Sacramento will be like with out the NBA. One just has to hope for the best!
I like the post...
…and I agree those are keys to our success; however, I would say #3 is the most important.
Petrie surprises every season
which means predicting what he’s going to do difficult. Personally I think MT is a given with a starting salary in the $6-7 mil range which still leaves plenty of money to pick up a FA or make a trade with. I’m hoping Petrie makes a trade rather than a FA because to me that seems to be where his strength lies. Who is he going to trade for and who from the Kings will he send out? I don;t know, my crystal ball isn’t coming in that clear right now.
