Marcus Thornton and a front loaded deal??

I was wondering if with the new CBA if we could give thornton a 5 year 40M front loaded deal like 20M this year and 5M per year after that??

Star-divide

That way we can get over the minimum salary and go after some free agents in a much better free agency next year.

Also we could sign one or two amnesty players or veterans with the remaining cap for this year.

What do you guys think?

5/40 might be excessive

But a front-loaded deal for Thornton could be useful if we can’t find a blue-chip big man to bring our salary up to the minimum level.

If we’re thinking about the future, we’ve got Hickson, JT, and Donte to worry about next year, then Tyreke the next year, then Cousins. Frontloading Thornton could really help us to stack the team during the prime years for our up-and-comers.

I like that

Although with next year’s free agent class, I would have no issue with letting JT or Donte walk in order to free up more cash for someone else. Unless they step up in a big way this year, which is unlikely.

Out of the two you let Donte walk- Sorry Donte Bro but Jt does more for this team is his 2 positions then you do in just 1

It depends on whether or not we pick up a FA center

If we were to resign Dalembert for 4yrs $24M and the final year unguaranteed or partially guaranteed, then the choice is much different. If after this season, DMC becomes your starting center with Sam as his backup, then JT falls into a battle for PF playing time with JJ and Whiteside.

As a rebounder/shot blocker, JT comes in 3rd of the 3 and has the highest QO. None of the three would even be in your top 4 as a scoring threat on there own.

I think JT’s future all depends on who we add to the roster at the 4 & 5. A starting 4 would give JT the opportunity to backup Cousins, but a backup 5 make JT a high priced 3rd string center. So, depending on how well JJ and Whiteside work out, I could see the Kings moving JT even this season.

Not as big of a disparity as people might think

And yes I realize Hickson is a 2nd year player and JT’s been in the league for 3. Whiteside..really HT, this guys hasn’t even proven himself in D league, let alone an NBA court…And honestly even if he does prove himself, I see him as more of a backup to Sammy. which leaves backup PF completely open for JT..For a guy like JT whose Qo is only $4,129,766, I think it’s a no brainer keeping him.
J.J. Hickson

Now Mr. Inconsistent Donte Green not so sure about that..Sparks of Defense (Salmons, Garcia), sparks of scoring (Salmons, Garcia) and his QO is 2.5 million at the end of the year..Also what will we need to trade him for and we have everything pretty much locked up.

Tyreke will probably want his extension after this season

though it wouldn’t kick in until the following year.

It's a pretty good idea over-all, within the CBA limits

assumming we don’t have a big score on one of the max guys on our radar.

I don't think Thornton gets that great of a deal.

He’s a third year player and as good as he played for us in about 20 games, he wasn’t even a starter in N.O. I don’t see him making more money than Tyreke. And, with Tyreke, Jimmer and Thomas playing the 1, Marcus is an undersized 2. I expect him to get an offer in the 4yr $20-22M range.

As far as upcoming contract extentions, well we can still amnesty Cisco or Salmons which would free up $6-8M. And I don’t expect us to keep both JT & JJ which could free up another $4M.

I’d like to keep Thornton, but with a healthy Tyreke and Jimmer hitting the long ball, he’s not going to get starters minutes like last season. And to me, that puts him in the MLE range. You give $40M over 4-5 for a top starter, and max money( which in 2 yrs will be $15M) to your Stars.

I don't see this at all

The jury is still out on Jimmer and WAY out on Thomas. You can’t assume anything minutes-wise with those guys at this point.

We need Thornton back, and I think you’re undervaluing his market value (and skill) a bit. And there’s really no sense comparing his potential contract to what Reke is making. Reke’s going to make considerably more when the time comes.

Also

Does anyone really see the Kings using amnesty when they are going to have to work just to meet the cap minimum? I don’t see many teams offering to take much of Cisco or Salmons contracts.

Pulling a wallywagon here

Is your scenario where we lose one of JT or JJ predicated on adding another big? Because I can fully see us going into the season with a frontcourt of DMC/JJ/JT/Anonymous filler big.

Add Whiteside in that mix.

At best, that's the "anonymous filler big" IMO

No Doubt

If the Maloofs contuinue the trend they have mastered the last few years (ie. spend as little as possible, pray the team makes a profit), I can’t see them taking on any huge deals that would be amnesty worthy (ie. Kenny Thomas, Webber)
Honestly, as overpaid as NBA players are, Cisco and Salmons don’t have terrible deals.

Someone will offer Thornton the full mid-level

We’ll match it and maybe a bit more.

The actual numbers notwithstanding,

the idea of a front-loaded idea for Thornton is a good one, provided that the Kings can’t find studs to invest in this year. Well done!

indeed

My offer would be $30million/5 years but with $10 million in the first year and $5/per after that… or maybe $14-4-4-4-4. Would be nice to keep that space open next season and beyond. Then maybe blow the rest of this year’s space on a 1-year deal for Oden

by LPKingsFan on Nov 29, 2011 5:17 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah that sounds really good.
I was just putting the worst case scenario in what we have to pay Thornton.
Give MT 14-4-4-4-4 and Oden a one year 8M With a team option would be awesome!

Declining Salaries

Not sure if there is a limit as to how much a salary can be reduced year to year in a single contract.

Anyone know?

Not for sure

But I believe they can decline as much as they can increase

Nice to read about basketball again

Instead of seeing daily pictures of the chief league hobbit, Mr. Stern. I guess 53% or similar numbers now means shooting percentage, not player-owner splits. Looking forward to some road trips and spirited conversations.
