is that enough salaries to match?

I agree that would make more sense for Houston (to keep the vets) and NO (to go young and rebuild), but does it work logistically?

I like this deal better for NO (still don't love it)

Lee has more value to contract than anyone in the previous deal, and it least now the Hornets get to “kick some tires” as it pertains to young, hope-to-be-developing players.

The latest I just saw
The Mavericks are planning on using the trade exception they nabbed from the Tyson Chandler Knicks sign-and-trade to swing it to Sacramento, in exhange for a sign-and-trade for Samuel Dalembert. ESPN reports the idea is to make a huge one-year offer for Dalembert, which allows them to contend this year with a decent Chandler replacement for one year, then have room to make a splash in the big 2012 free agency…

How could we do a a ‘huge’ offer to Sammy and get what back? What is huge? I think for Sammy huge IS probably $12mil. I guess we’d get that trade exception back Dallas received for Chandler?

I don't think so

I seem to recall Stephen Jackson (maybe?) being traded solely for an exception. I may not have the player right, but I think that I’ve seen it happen before. If not, then yeah, one of those future 2nd round draft picks that seem to trade hands about six times before they ultimately disappear.

SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!

by section214 on Dec 10, 2011 10:18 AM PST up reply actions

If I'm understanding this right,

(note – there is a 100% chance that I am not understanding this right) The Kings don’t have to take a player back in trade, as they receive the trade exception. Dallas is allowed to take on Dalembert’s contract without reducing contract because they currently have this large trade exception. The trade exception becomes a tradeable asset for the Kings (unless they have visions of exceeding the cap on their own), and it allows them to give Dalembert a “gift” by facilitating a trade that enables him to land a good contract.

by SACroyals15 on Dec 10, 2011 10:06 AM PST up reply actions

Fit?

If you add Barea, you are basically saying that Fredette sits this year. You have 96 minutes in the backcourt each night (plus maybe 6 minutes at SF when they slide Tyreke over there and go “small”). About 38 minutes for ’Reke, 32 minutes for Thornton. If you bring in Barea and give him 24 minutes, that leaves about 8 minutes for Fredette, which also means that Garcia and Isaiah Thomas wait for someone to get hurt.

It does matter

If Barea doesn’t get big minutes, he’s going to be one pouty mother – bank on it. And I agree that Fredette needs to earn his minutes – the first guy that he has to knock off is Garcia.

Again, this comes down to my perception that Barea is overrated and will cost too much money. He was not a very good player for most of last year. He peaked in the playoffs when he was given some very soft match ups. I think that he will cost more than a couple of million dollars and more than a year, and anything more than 1 year, $2m is too much for his limited skills and gaping holes, in my opinion.

It certainly wouldn’t hurt to have Barea to mitigate that risk. I think he would be a great addition THIS year. I thought it was settled already

Reke isn’t a PG. That’s why we drafted Jimmer as our PG for the future. And we can’t deny that Jimmer and Isaiah are unproven at the NBA level. PG is also the toughest position to learn in the NBA. Hence, it wouldn’t hurt to get someone at the position who has proven himself. It’s good to have a bit of redundancy for competition and insurance against injuries.

You'll hear it eventually

He’s going to have to play PG in the NBA. And if he’s going to start alongside Reke, that’s what he will be, a PG. Jimmer himself even conceded this fact, and believes himself to be a PG.

Question

Who was the point guard when Bibby and Christie were here? Bibby if you’re going by height or by who brought the ball across the time line, but once the offense started there was no point guard – Bibby’s assist stats were not overwhelming.

Evans will be the lead guard for this team, because he is the guy most likely to become a backcourt star for this team. Everyone else’s responsibilities will be based off of his development.

And 1 – Evans sure looked like a point guard down the stretch of his rookie season. Let’s see what he can do with two good feet under him again.

Being a PG isn't just about assists

It’s about running a team. Getting everyone involved before looking for your own shot. I agree, the PG/SG positions will be blurred a little with Jimmer/Reke, but that doesn’t change the fact that Jimmer is going to have to learn how to run a team. He is going to have to share in that responsibility if he wants to play significant minutes in the NBA. And it’s going to take time.

Check out the Sacramento Kings Preview on NBA.com. Jimmer isn’t the only one who thinks he has to learn the PG position.

by section214 on Dec 10, 2011 12:39 PM PST up reply actions

It's not just about stats

Barea can run an offense. Half the time he’s on the floor, its a simple pick and roll, which he’s proven to be really good at. Hayes is one of the best screener’s in the game (according to Jerry Reynolds). Put that together and we’ve got something we can rely on when our starters are on the bench. Barea can make plays in the pick and roll, which is extremely valuable in the NBA.

by amack10 on Dec 10, 2011 12:46 PM PST up reply actions

I just don't see it

But it’s because I just don’t think he’s worth what someone will eventually pay for him, he’s been a defensive sieve his entire career excluding his time with Tyson Chandler, and he is a very inefficient offensive player. Aside from that, what’s not to like?

SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!

by section214 on Dec 10, 2011 12:54 PM PST up reply actions

He may not be an ideal backup PG

(Although he was the backup PG for a championship team). But he does have a very underrated skill in being great at pick and roll offense. On defense, he will mostly be asked to guard the other team’s backup PG, which shouldn’t be much of a problem. I just think that we could use a vet who can take some of the ball handling responsibilities. And Barea is the best one on the market. I just think that he would help us win games, plain and simple.

I don't care

You’re talking about 10-12 minutes a night behind Tyreke. Barea’s not going to be happy with that. Fredette or Thomas or Thornton or Garcia can initiate, given the fact that the Kings aren’t running a traditional pass-first point guard offense in the first place.

If Barea wants to come here for a year and play about 10 minutes a night backing up Tyreke Evans for $2m, I’m all for bringing him in. My bet is that he is looking for at least 3 years and $12-15m, and I wouldn’t pay that for him.

Lopez is younger, better, and injury-free.

No way the Magic would take Bynum over Lopez.

I hope the Kings get a lotto protected 1st round next year from the Mavs.

That way we can ship that one to the Cavs to replace the Omri/JJ deal pick we sent to them.

by Smills9133 on Dec 10, 2011 11:38 AM PST reply actions

I don't think it's up to Cleveland.

They agreed to a lottery protected 1st rounder. I really don’t anticipate us in the playoffs just yet, therefore no pick this year in that scenario. Having a Dallas late 1st allows us to move it to them and fulfill the trade obligation of a non-lotto first round pick.

Is there any confirmation that the non-lotto 1st round pick HAS to be a Sacramento Kings non-lotto 1st round pick?

by Smills9133 on Dec 10, 2011 12:47 PM PST up reply actions

Interesting thought.

If I was Cleveland I would prefer to wait a year or two and get a lottery pick. We traded our pick with the conditions. I wouldn’t think we would be able to substitute someone else’s pick.

by Kfan in Korea on Dec 10, 2011 12:53 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah I suppose it matters of the language of the deal

But there’s a strong possibility it just has to be a late 1st rounder and if that’s the case, I don’t think they get to elect when they get it unless it’s absolutely spelled out in the contract of the trade.

by Smills9133 on Dec 10, 2011 1:01 PM PST up reply actions

I'm sure it specifically states that it's our pick because if it's like you're hoping:

Let’s say we make the playoffs this season and our pick is #17 and we pick up Dallas’ #26 pick. In your scenario we could make them take Dallas’ pick instead of ours. I don’t think so.

on the flipside of that

if our pick is #23 and Dallas’ pick is #15 we get to keep the #15 pick.

I'd be pissed if I was Chauncey too

All he owes the team that picks him up is to show up and play, which I’m pretty sure he will do to avoid leaving all that money on the table. However, he’s not contractually obligated to provide a cheery presence in the locker room or mentoring for young players, and he’s making it pretty clear that he has no interest in doing that for a non-contender. I don’t fault him for a little spite at this point.

If he was asked to do something that is not reasonable to his duties he could decline without fault. If he was asked to do something that was reasonable, and declined, he would be at fault. Not what I meant at all

Of course he has to work with young players in practice if the coach asks him to. I just meant he’s not going to put in any extra effort to mentor anybody or be a good locker room guy.

This is all hypothetical and pointless, anyway. I’m just saying that I understand his bitterness, and if I was in his shoes, I wouldn’t want to end my career on a young non-playoff team either. He’s either trying to game his way onto the team he wants (in which case he would just show up to collect a check if he lands on a team he doesn’t like), or he’s genuinely considering retirement over it. I don’t fault him either way.

From Adrian Wojnarowski

Dwight Howard has requested that the Orlando Magic trade him to the New Jersey Nets, league sources tell Y! Sports.

Thank god it’s not the Lakers

Ok few points on the status of the Western Conference

1. Phoenix Suns – its not the same Suns a few years back with Nash, Amare & company.
2. Portland Trailblazers – no Roy and no Oden, LaMarcus out for 2 weeks (heart problem?)
3. Golden State Warriors – need adjustment, new coach, Curry vs. Ellis
4. Minnesota Timberwolves – Kahn alone supports my argument, but they also needs adjustment, coach Adelman i know will make this team better but not this season.
5.Houston Rockets – also will adjust to new system, new coach
6.Denver Nuggets – not enough player to compete?
7.Utah Jazz – No more Jerry Sloan
8. New Orleans Hornets – No CP3 = no playoffs?
The Western Conference i think is very very open!!!

Just say this

Dalembert is seeing his options dry up in front of his eyes.

Maybe he can be had for cheap(er) now?

And now they are trying to get Dwight Howard to LA

Which is infinitely the better move. If this trade is made I would hope to see another veto, just to piss of the [redacted].

Well to be fair

He could go to Orlando once Howard is gone.

Then why wouldn't he stay?

The Kings have a better roster and situation.
