Just curious
When they were running the three guard set, who seemed to be playing the traditional PG role? Or did it rotate?
It comes down to reality
And it's fine with me 'cause I've let it slide
From the video
It looked like Tyreke was running point and Jimmer and Marcus were the off guards. However, that’s like three clips from a four minute video.

SB-
They are moving the ball a ton in all of their sets. Even the standard starting line-up – Evans, Thornton, Salmons, Cousins, Hayes, move the ball extremely well. They are running the high post a lot with both Cousins and Hayes. There is a ton of cutting and Cousins is directing a lot of traffic from up top. On the defensive end, they are running a press a lot when they go to three guards which is a nice switch up.
I have not seen a lot of isolation or even a lot of dribbling. I did notice that when they bring Hickson in the game, they play a two man game with him and Thornton/Salmons. Hayes and Thompson seem to be getting most of their baskets on put-backs and drive and kicks from the guards. Thompson is also doing a solid job moving to the hoop without the ball and Hayes is a destroyer on the pick.
Having no rotational shot blocker is a bit of an issue, which is why the team has chased AK-47. I don’t know if he is still an option or not but Westphal loves that guy. I don’t think the Kings need to add a starter that can block shots, but they need a goalie to help Jimmer until he is fully acclimated to the NBA game. For now, Thompson, Hickson and Cousins will have to do.

Thanks for the update!
Good to hear we are doing a lot of passing from different positions. That was one of the things I loved about the glory year Kings. Hope Cousins improves on his decision making. He can be an amazing passer when he doesn’t make dumb decisions and I’ve heard Hayes is a very good passer too.

The shot blocking issue is a minor issue at best.
But when you’re talking the beginning of the season, you try to hit as many boats as possible I suspect.

I agree.
When I compare Dalembert to Hayes, I look at the steal numbers, as well as the blocked shot numbers. Steals are a true change of possession while blocking a shot has no guarantee of possession. I’ll take a steal every day of the week. I would still like to see someone playing goalie behind Jimmer in the same way that I thought having one behind Beno made him a better defender.

Agree. Hayes's steals are overlooked and bring something to the table
But shotblockers to alter a lot more shots than they block. So even without the change of possession, I wouldn’t underestimate their impact.
I am just happy we have a big who can guard 1 on 1 and play the screen and roll though, because those have both killed us since about ’04.
No to be facetious, but if the Kings are that worried about blocks, bring in Whiteside
Sammy was good goalie but it was because he knew how to defend and for the most part rotate off his man. That both causes problems for the guy driving the ball and the defense as Dally’s man is now open.
The Kings need to play defense first, worry about blocking shots second. Defending the goal only using blocks as your last line of defense has to come with other adjustments. Learn those other adjustments first.

Agree with you. There's a huge difference between guys like Howard and Sammy
who know how to get their blocks within the flow of a defense. And guys like Thabeet and Whiteside who go after every block leaving the defense vulnerable.
Basketball fans tend to treat all blocks equally, but the difference between smart and aggressive shot blockers is the same difference as a Anthony Parker type shooter and a Ricky Davis type shooter.

Seriously
Take a look at the team block averages for last season. A mixed bag of defensive success (based on their defensive ratings) among the squads in the top half.

Hey James,
What are your early impressions of Tyreke’s jumper? Does it look more consistent?
We haven't gotten to see him shoot a lot.
He looked great at the Goon Squad Classic, but at this point of training camp, it is more about putting in sets. Even the scrimmages are based on the play sets. It’s very important for a young team to get repetition in the first few days of camp. Once the pre-season starts, you will see those sets intertwined with the individual talents of the players on the floor.
With the shortened camp/pre-season, it is very important that players understand the bits and pieces that the coaching staff is implementing. Adding solid veterans like Chuck Hayes and John Salmons is really helping, as is the basketball IQ of Jimmer Fredette. This is a much smarter team IMO than what we have seen the last few years.

Yup it did look good at the GSC
But overall in the games he’s played during hte lockout ts looked either amazing or mediocre. I feel like a lot rides on Tyreke’s jumper this year, so here’s to hoping it starts shining.
It's funny
I’m actually less concerned about his jumper if his foot is healthy. We are going to have at least a couple of lights out shooters on this team. If Evans is healthy enough to take it to the hoop like he used to, he can kick out to other shooters if the lane collapses. I’d still like Evans to have a nice mid-range pull-up jumper. But I definitely don’t need to see him attempting a ton of threes.
It comes down to reality
And it's fine with me 'cause I've let it slide
It affects his ability to play off the ball
With Cousins and Hayes seemingly going to have set offenses run through them, its important for Tyreke to not be a bystander when they have the ball.
True
But it’s his slashing ability that opens up the outside not. No matter how good he is at shooting, it will never be the other way.
It comes down to reality
And it's fine with me 'cause I've let it slide
Tyreke's midrange is the key
if he develops a good midrange game and maybe gets to 35 percent from 3 he’s hard to stop.
I don't even think he needs 35% from the 3
But if he can get it, I would take that.
It comes down to reality
And it's fine with me 'cause I've let it slide
That's plenty, ala Wade

He still fades way too much
Especially when he does his fake cross over shot. His open shots looked much improved

that Fade is horrible.
HOOOORRRRRRRIBLE!
Ya, I'm not quite sure how he made it all the way to college with that fade
Figured someone would have told him to knock it off by now

seriously I told my brother to stop that noise
when he was twelve. Straight up straight down square to the basket, not that hard.
I remember watching a video of him back in HS.
His jumper was his most consistent weapon. But now, ehhh.
I hope he gets it back. Haha

Agreed 75%
It depends on where the shot is being taken. Michael Jordan used to fade away all the time, but it was generally when he started in or close to the key and faded back out. Evans has done this with some success (the game winner vs. Denver would be one example). But the fade from the perimeter has got to go, and that is where he seems to do the bulk of his fading.
SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!
fair enough
Jordan would also fade from the block, anywhere from 10-13ft out. but you can get away with that when you’re MJ.
In all fairness Jordan was also MICHAEL FREAKING JORDAN
He should shoot blindfolded off of one foot and I’d call it a good shot.
There is one other player(who shall not be named) who has an almost identical fade
And then some tall german fella. The fade is a great skillset. However, fading for the sake of fading is not.
by HeuristicLineup on Dec 12, 2011 10:17 AM PST up reply actions
the fade is a great move to have.
It shouldn’t be the go to move though all too often last year it would be Reke drives pulls up and fades back on a 15-18 footer and then I’d have to go buy another TV.
From 10' - to 14' I'm okay with it

I think it's almost mandatory in that range for any guard
But yeah, the fade at the three point line needs to go.
"If you can’t make a profit, you should sell your team." - Michael Jordan (Owner, Charlotte Bobcats)
Don't get me wrong, can be a great shot, especially from in close
I just chuckle a big at any argument that goes Jordan did it, so therefore other players should. Jordan is a very, very rare class of player.
Jordan is the extreme
But there are plenty of players that have a very solid fade away jumper and use it properly
by HeuristicLineup on Dec 12, 2011 10:48 AM PST up reply actions
Yep, especially guards
If Reke added a nice little fadeaway jumper in the paint and a floater, he’d be damn near impossible to defend.
"If you can’t make a profit, you should sell your team." - Michael Jordan (Owner, Charlotte Bobcats)
Ya. The fade when applicable is a great weapon to have(ie. like you said, MJ)
My problem with it is he decides to use it when it’s not even necessary.
by HeuristicLineup on Dec 12, 2011 10:11 AM PST up reply actions
I love the MJ comparison.
Now all we need to do is hone him to be the second coming of MJ.

I like the press
not a bad idea to try to wear teams down with the compressed schedule, and our depth/youth should help considerably
The press will interesting
It basically gets the other team to either take a quick shot if they break it (which speeds up the tempo of the game, allowing for more transition opportunities) or gives them less time to get into their offensive set. I guess PW feels that both of the those outcomes are to our advantage. Not to mention the possibility of Reke getting a steal and hitting Jimmer for a transition 3. Should be fun.
What gets me the most excited...
Is hearing that they plan on running some offense through DMC on the high post. I liked seeing it last year and I think It’s the perfect utilization of his skill set and will motivate guys to be active without the ball with some easy points. If his decision making can continue to improve we could see some very pretty basketball.

I'm liking PW and Honeycut's beardy looks.
I think the entire team should go bearded this season. I think it would be appropriate for this season: lockout, crazy short training camp, insanely strenuous game schedule. This season isn’t about getting prepared and looking pretty, it’s about doing the best with what you’ve got, nothing fancy, just keep working. It’s not perfection, it’s survival. Time to get our game beards on and go play.
Salmons obviously is already on board. Cuz and Donté I think are at least part way there. The only problem is, I’m not so sure Jimmer could grow one if he tried. I bet he’s never shaved in his life, just gets up every morning and sees that baby-soft perfection looking back at him in the mirror. But if Jimmer did grow a beard, you know it would be a big-time gamer.
