Kings vs. Dubs Post-Game Recap (Warning: Grinch Edition!)
- If it is possible to miss a player that never played one game for the team, I miss Chuck Hayes.
- DeMarcus treats the basketball like a red-headed step child.
- Chuck would have brought the unique ability of a player along the Kings front-line who actually values the basketball.
- Memo to Tyreke Evans: Its OK to have fun while playing. You don't have to pretend you are on your way to get a root canal by Dr. Jim Gray.
- Memo to Klay Thompson: I have seen Kevin Martin play basketball. You are no Kevin Martin.
- Chuckwagon had a 2:1 assist to turnover ratio last year. Our front line had 5 assists and 15 TOs tonight, or a 1:3 ratio.
- If there is such thing as a moral win, the Dubs scored one. They hung tough without Stephan Curry.
- Get well, Chuck. Find the best heart doctor out there. Heal, then let's deal.
- If there is such a thing as a moral loss, score one for the Kings. Sloppy. Porous. Disjointed.
- We have a player who swings between both forward spots and camps out at the 3-point line. His name is Donte Greene. Why did we waste $12 million dollars on Travis Outlaw? What was Geoff thinking?
- Travis Outlaw is a bad basketball player. He has poor balance. He overruns plays. He camps out at the three point line when easier shots are available. He is not what this team needs.
- Our two best players (Reke and Cousins) had 16 TOs? Rust or not, inexcusable. Improved efficiency from high usage players is imperative if this season is not to be a repeat of last. That kind of carelessness wins zero games once it counts.
- I am 100% opposed to a philosophy of a head coach who rewards the player who played the best in previous game (Jimmer) by demoting him to the bench because he wants to experiment with a 2nd round pick (Honeycutt) as his starter in the last pre-season game.
- Coaches may not think starting is important. Players do.
- An offense that includes zero designed plays to get shots for Jimmer needs immediate tweaking.
- Lose the goatee, Coach Westphal.
- Marcus Thornton is underpaid.
- For a high usage player, JJ Hickson showed discerning shot selection, 11 unforced FGAs in 30 minutes.
- JJ Hickson will not make the all-defensive team in 2011-12.
- After getting out-rebounded by the Dubs again, the one-year contract offer to Sammy D just increased by 250K.
- The amount of increase is 250K more than I'd offer.
- It was not pretty tonight but we won, and...
- It's OK, we have Hasaan Whiteside.
- It's OK, we have John Salmons.
- It's OK, we just gave $12 million dollars to one of the worst players in the NBA.
- It's OK, our head coach sports odd looking facial hair.
- It's OK, the Lakers have Josh McRoberts.
- It's OK, Marcus Thornton is open.
- BREAKING! Donte Greene just called his agent.
- BREAKING! Donte Greene just fired his agent.
- BREAKING! Donte Greene just hired the agent of Travis Outlaw.
- Tyler Honeycutt and Isaiah Thomas are terrific second round draft picks.
- A terrific second draft pick does not mean you are ready for rotation minutes. But it might.
- Isaiah Thomas is fearless. Jason Thompson should hang out with Isaiah Thomas.
- The Kings currently have three star level players. When two out of three play well, we have a good chance to win. When all three play well, we can beat any team in the NBA. When only one plays well, we witness the type of game we saw tonight.
- FREE Adrian (Oliver)!
- Warning to KDT (Kings Dance Team): Stay away from Monta Ellis. No really, stay away.
- Unless he can introduce you to Stephan. (Meow, soooo dreamy. Wait! What! Who said that?!?)
- The Kings played their first home basketball game tonight in 8 months, when permanent departure seemed imminent.
- The NBA is back. Life is good.
- So is an electric razor, Coach Westphal.

Someone we know just showed up on Santa's naughty list.
Salmons injury might hold him out of a few of the first weeks games, so I can see PW giving Honeycutt a nice burn. He might have to give some minutes to him in Salmons absence.
The turnovers by our stars came from being overly aggressive in making plays for others. And, not from charges, offensive fouls, moving picks, or failing to clear the lane. I can live with that especially since I don’t believe that they can’t fix that problem very quickly.
Outlaw may be a duplication of Donte, but he’s probably a better PF than Donte is so their not going to step completely over each other. And, until I see Dalembert back in a Kings uni, we could use some help at PF by someone who can hit from beyond 10ft because JJ obviously can’t.
My only concern at this point, considering the new players and limited practice is the limited off the ball movement. And, we still do a very poor job of getting to ball deep into the post. We have no movement thru the lane along the baseline, and no one setting screens of the opposing bigs to free up out players in the paint. Tyreke did it to free up Jimmer who got an easy layup in the first game, but basically our bigs are on their own in the paint right now. Which is why we are being seriously outscored in the paint and why we’re seeing so many turnovers.

Thanks Lebron, for reminding me how miserable my life is.
Sammy had the 2nd best shooting percentage from 10-15 ft behind only Beno
He was only average from 3-9 ft but he was still better then Cousins, Evans, Garcia, Greene and Casspi. Where he really was disappointing was at the rim where he was last in shooting percentage at 58% which was just behind Noah, Hawes and Hayes among centers.
One point about the Kings centers at the rim. Of the top 32 centers that played at least 20mpg, Thompson and Dalembert were 28th and 26th respectively in assisted baskets at the rim. Centers like Gortat and Chandler scored 74% and 73% of the time at the rim, but 80% and 75% of the baskets were assisted respectively.
Our centers might not look pretty or score efficiently around the basket, but unlike some of the other top centers in the league, the Kings centers have to do it more often on their own.

Or
Our centers are costing our guards a ton of assists by not being able to finish around the basket.

Fleshing that comment out a bit
On the face of it, I might agree with you that the numbers you cite reflect a lack of ability of our ballhandlers to get the pill to the big men in the right spot to convert. We all know that Tyreke is no Steve Nash at this point, amirite?
But on the flipside, we also know that Jason Thompson has a horrible time converting around the basket, due to his lack of ability with the left hand (and other reasons). And my own eyes witnessed DMC having all kinds of trouble putting the ball down in the paint last year, even against smaller defenders – which made me think his lack of physical strength and conditioning was really the issue.
So if you’re a Tyreke fan, you might look at those numbers and say “damn, those rubber handed, slow footed dipshits down low can’t convert to save their lives”.
I suspect those numbers require a bit more context and analysis before you can use them to make conclusions on the abilities of either the frontcourt or backcourt.
Hell, it’s likely that the problem is with our distributors and our finishers.

My comment was regarding Hickson and Dally being "GAAAAAAH MY EYES"
the numbers I quoted were in an effort to show that Dalmebert didn’t preform poorly on his jumpers from 3-15 ft. But, I did admit that Dally and all of our bigs except DeMarcus exhibit little or no low post game. JJ did have one running jumper in the paint in the last game, but I haven’t watched enough of him to come to a conclusion that he’s any better than JT.
As far as whether Sam is the cause of our guards not getting assists because of his poor post moves, or whether his poor post moves would be offset by better interior passing from our guards, I have only my opinion and no proof. Although I’m hoping, both improve this season.
I would submit this number. In Sam’s last 4 years in Philly, he shot better than 65% at the rim twice and 70.6% of those baskets were assisted. While in his lone season with the KIngs he averaged 58.1% at the rim on 54.4% assisted baskets. Now we all seem to be agreeing that Sam doesn’t have the best low post game. So, was he just better when he was younger?, did he just have a bad season last year?, or did he just not get the help that he needed to be a efficient scorer? I’m guessing we all think we know the answer, but I doubt we all think the same thing.
Not to drag this out any further, since it’s not something we can prove either way, but in Hawes last season he shot 59.4% on 54.4% assisted shots at the rim, and Jon Brockman 61.6% on 48.9% assisted baskets. While Landry shot 75% on 46.1% assisted baskets. So, it looks like almost no one gets assisted baskets, even the ones that score really well at the rim.

Oh, and just to throw more stats at the wall to see where they stick
The Kings were 11th in attempts at the rim last season and 7th in FG% at the rim. But, they were dead last in assisted baskets at the rim.

One note on Hickson's shot selection
A couple of them might have been unforced, but he shouldn’t have taken them anyway. His jumper is awful. He’s a beast around the basket though, love his motor.

I don't think its awful
JJ has a smooth release and nice rotation out to 16 feet. He hasn’t gotten results but he has a fundamental shooting motion which gives hope he can develop consistency.

i agree with everything you said on here
mainly with tyreke forcing everything and marcus thornton being underpaid. but no doubt the thing i agree with most is that Westphal needs to shave that beaver on his face
I agree with most of what you said.
But Outlaw is better than Donte.
I was about to say the same
If Outlaw sucks, what is Donte? Suckier? Outlaw looked like a decent back up to me.
35 and 31. I'm calling it now. Reke and Cousins 1-2 in most improved award both All-stars. Jimmer leads rookies in scoring, passing and Ole's. Make 2nd round of playoffs and Salmons is not here by seasons end.
My son and I were discussing on the way to the game
that its possible Donte falls behind Salmons Outlaw Cisco and Honeycutt for current level of SF skills. Can’t handle, can’t RB, not a passer, and an erratic shooter.

I think Outlaw could end up taking some of Garcia and Donte's minutes
I thought that they brought him in to play some PF, but with Sammy possibly returning Outlaw most likely would be the 5th man in the big rotation.
I’ve really of the opinion that Cisco isn’t the defender he once was. Even last season, most of his blocks came from blocking shots from behind after his man blew by him. And, he really looked bad defending Klay Thompson in the 1st preseason game.
As for Honeycutt, 6pts, 1 reb, 1 asts and 3 turnovers in 19 minutes isn’t what I would call world beating numbers. He’s talented and athletic but he’s going to need some seasoning before he’s ready to really contribute.
Salmons at the 3, I guess he’ll be ok, but I’m hoping he’s well enough to play Monday. I really want to see how well he can defend SF’s the size of Artest. So, I’m not ready to give up on Donte just yet and I’m not sure that Outlaw is any better at the SF. This and the guard rotations are going to be very interesting especially with that mad scientist PW stirring the pot.

This is on the money...
I’m tired of the careless turnovers, the lack of ball movement on offense, and the poor team defense. I realize it is only preseason and we haven’t had much time to gel, but we looked rudderless.
IMHO we have one of the lowest basketball IQs in the league. We just don’t seem to get it, and a lot of that goes back to Tyreke, DeMarcus and the coaching staff.
Reke and DMC have all the potential in the world, but we can’t keep making execuses. I just don’t see a whole lot of improvement. They need to play smarter and get waaaaay more efficient.
And, the coaching staff needs to put players in a position to succeed.
Identify player strengths and try to mask weaknesses. We should have plays that free up Jimmer and Marcus Thorton for open jumpers (and, no, a ragged, poorly executed high pick and roll is not what I’m talking about.). Get DMC the ball deep in the post and give him the room to operate and hit cutters.
Lastly, really teach Tyreke the point guard position and get him into situations where he isn’t going 1 on 4. Simplify his duties. Ask him to initiate the offense quickly, recognize opportunities where he has the advantage, and value the ball. Freelancing isn’t working.
The 49ers are a perfect example of what can happen if you coach a team up. This team has talent, but we have a long way to go.
And it only took SF six years to find a formula . . . . .
