On a personal, that’s fantastic news. Happy to hear that.

On a business level, Petrie better be on that phone right NOW with him.

Not over nothing

I’m truly happy that it sounds like Chuck will be ok. I hope Chuck will get 1 more opinion from the doctors to make sure every thing is on the up and up with his health. The reason I feel like they voided his contract is because the good people over at UC Davis medical center or whoever does their physicals wanted to error on the side of caution. You cannot blame the Kings and their staff for that. I am happy that we have a team that puts the health of its players first and foremost. I am sure that with this news the Kings organization will do more research on Chucks health to be absolutely 100% positive that Chuck is healthy and ready to rock and roll with the Sac. Kings!

Maybe we shouldn't have voided the contract in the 1st place.

That’s the problem when a notable reputable medical facility like the Cleveland Clinic says your heart is okay. Of course, it could be agent hyperbole too.

by otis29 on Dec 22, 2011 10:01 AM PST up reply actions

I think timing issues explains a lot of it.

But let’s be honest Otis: It’s not like Hayes contract was breaking the bank either. This is a story that cuts to the heart of how competent this franchise is and there’s little else to say about that. On the other hand, it could have happened to any team and it is possible, no matter how unlikely, that the doc at the Cleveland Clinic is wrong.

No mistakes in the tango, Donna. Not like life. Simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get all tangled up, you just tango on.....

I've seen a few things that agree with you pookey

various disgruntled team members over the years grousing about the lack of scouting and film work available
players coming in out of shape and being able to claim they’re trying to switch positions
rumors of no metrics research by the front office
and now this.

Call the Waaambulance!

by TheFifthMookie on Dec 22, 2011 10:13 AM PST up reply actions

Okay...well......

…..Donte coming in out of shape I think was on him. Regardless of how many pounds he weighs. Antoine Wright can say whatever he want, but I took that with a major grain of salt. In otherwords, I ignored what Wright said. I don’t think his opinion means much in any way shape or form.

No metrics in the front office is a matter of opinion, and I think everyone will come down on their own opinion for that one.

I was talking more about the Maloofs/Petrie to find the right kind of medical research. Hayes isn’t the only player in NBA history to have this happen, and I suspect it’s SOP for NBA teams to void a contract in the way the Kings did so in this instance. It’s not like teams are going to send their players to the Cleveland Clinic every time there is an issue of any magnitude. There are other quality doctors in the world.

What I hope, more than anything, is that the Kings can get Hayes signed and we can put this behind us. But if the Kings can’t get Hayes insured that’s going to be a major problem, and it won’t be the Kings as the only team with that problem. Insurance is the main way teams protect themselves against a major injury that noone could have predicted. Because this heart issue is known, it makes any contract issue sticky to say the least.

No mistakes in the tango, Donna. Not like life. Simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get all tangled up, you just tango on.....

by pookeyguru on Dec 22, 2011 10:23 AM PST up reply actions

That's what I'm wondering

If the Kings medical staff somehow botched this, will it make it tougher for Hayes to get any contract insured? Forget how it hurts the Kings – if it affects Hayes’ ability to get a contract subsequently, that’s obviously a huge deal.

"I DECLARE BANKRUPTCY!" - Michael Scott

by otis29 on Dec 22, 2011 10:30 AM PST up reply actions

Yep hence a lawsuit.

I think the issue is being able to insured, and that’s the heart of the issue here (no pun intended). The Cleveland Clinic can say Hayes heart is fine (which is great news for Hayes in terms of being able to, you know, live hopefully a long healthy productive life whether it’s in the NBA or no) but without that diagnosis allowing insurance companies to sign off on the insurance of Hayes contract this could be a ridiculously sticky situation and then some.

Personally, I think Hayes is worth the risk. Especially if there is a minor procedure that could fix any complications in the future. But if the Cleveland Clinic is saying there isn’t even a minor procedure necessary…..well that’s an issue in of itself.

Jeff Green had an issue with his own heart, and that has been resolved fairly quietly. The reason I think Hayes’ situation hasn’t is because, unfortunately, it’s a sticky situation that has a lot of gray area within it. Simply put Otis, I think the issue with Hayes isn’t the heart, but the condition that, unfortunately harkens back to Jason Collier (who collapsed on the court in Oct 2005 and died) and the NBA has forced it’s teams to acknowledged heart conditions that are fatal as a result. I don’t think Petrie just voided this contract because he was having second thoughts. The Maloofs are stupid like that, but even they I don’t think are that far gone yet.

I think the issue, as James said last night, is an insurance one. If the Kings can’t get insurance on Hayes, and I suspect that’s the actual delay on getting Hayes signed (and why the void took place to begin with), than I suspect Hayes won’t be signed here under any circumstances whether it’s a risk worth taking or not.

No mistakes in the tango, Donna. Not like life. Simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get all tangled up, you just tango on.....

I want to hear a statement from somebody who is NOT his agent.

Obviously his agent loses money with Chuck not playing. Hopefully it is a case of our doctors taking the cautious route. It could be a 50-50 scenario of there being an issue. One side saying he’s fine while the other saying something different.

I'm also surprised

that the Kings do not get a second opinion on medical assessments when they have such a significant team and financial impact. If you tweak you ankle at practice, yeah have the team doctor check it out. If you are diagnosed with a life threatening heart condition that will result in the voiding of a $21M contract you might want to have someone else opine on that. Jeez.

They had to void the contract because he failed the physical

With no guarantee he would ever play, and no insurance on the money, there was no choice. I dont blame the Kings front office at all.

In a regular offseason, this would have been different. The team would have had time for Hayes to go to the Cleveland clinic for his 2nd opinion before having to void the contract. But with FA period so shortened, they had to void it to make room for a backup plan (Dalembert)

especially since it came out of the blue in this instance. It has nothing to do how good our doctors are. Our doctor is a general physician, and would not be able to see everything that goes on in the body.

I take Hayes' Agents statement in the literal sense.

It’s not a heart problem, it’s a problem with the sack surrounding the heart. He didn’t say it wasn’t Pericarditis.

A heart problem is an issue that raises huge red flags for teams. A solvable issue with the sack around the heart is something that is curable and one can expect a full recovery. – Agent damage control.

Maybe I am a little cynical

but the statement that “He does not have a heart problem” would be technically true for
Pericarditis if it had not progressed to doing damage. The cause for the original attack and wether that includes the possibility of reoccurance were not answered in this press release. Just that there was no damage. That risk factor still needs to be known before contracts start flying.
That said, I am sure the Kings will do their due dilligence and hope to see Hayes, the greatest King to have never suited up, suit up in hisKing’s jersey soon.
I will tweet him congrats and stay the moment my fingers hit post.

Encouraging news

I don’t pretend to know about these things; but it would seem this is all about insurance. If doctors disagree, it still might mean he’s uninsurable and the Maloofs take on a huge risk if he drops during a game or his condition gets worse.

I would imagine most players, when confronted with a possible future condition, would still want to play no matter what. Especially players with this much heart.

I was REALLY tempted to spend more to get him.

He’s pretty damn efficient. I was not turned off by his poor rebounding last year; I think his bout with mono affected him more than people realize. He went for $20, right? That was definitely reasonable at the time.

In the end, I only got two of the players I really wanted—Manu and Kyrie.

Insurance

there are many facts in this case and they may all be true.

Insurance companies take this stuff seriously, they saw something and wouldn’t cover the guy. I don’t doubt that the Cleveland clinic came to a second opinion. Thats what a good agent does, I hope its a case of the latter and not the former.

As far as the Dalembert case, I have a feeling that coming back here was his last choice and his agent may well have made some last minute “requests” after a deal was agreed to. This I wonder may have caused the Kings to pull their offer. Either that or they we using the Kings as a stalking horse just get him an offer from A.N. Other

Don't rush to judge something you know nothing about

It is encouraging to know that further medical testing was reassuring with regard to Chuck Hayes and his potentially scarey health situation. However it is perplexing to see that many have been quick to change their tone from one of genuine compassion and sympathy for Chuck to a tone of condemnation towards the Kings management.

The issue at hand was obviously a serious one and pertained to concern on the part of the Kings medical staff and team regarding the potential risk of sudden death for Chuck Hayes while playing NBA basketball due to a newly suspected cardiac condition picked up during stress testing apparently associated with enlargement of the heart . We don’t know all the specifics and may never know the reality concerning the specific diagnostic information. This evaluation is usually performed by a cardiologist and not the Kings medical staff. There was a subsequent recommendation by the Kings medical staff for Chuck to seek further evaluation (a second opinion) expeditiously at the Cleveland Clinic. It was apparently the Kings (not the agent) who facilitated the expiditious referral to the Cleveland Clinic which is one of the top cardiac centers in the U.S. Despite what Aileen Viosin does in the public media…the Kings and the medical staff were appropriately not forthcoming with details on the issue. There is something called HIPPA violations that pertain to confidentiality of medical information which was respected in this instance by the Sacramento Kings and their medical staff.

We don’t know what prompted the voiding of the contract by the Kings management. Perhaps if one fails a physical the contract is automatically voided. In an abreviated period of free agency there probably were basketball, insurance and business factors that weighed in to this decision. If they didn’t void the contract Chuck Hayes would not be able to seek employment with other teams. Obviously the goal for the Kings at the time was to secure the services of another big man. Perhaps the continued situation of Chuck Hayes remaining under contract would potentuially make Sacramento a less desireable destination for another free agent signee in terms of minutes.

Did the subsequent evaluation by the Cleveland Clinic medical team weigh in to the Kings abrupt withdrawl of their offer to Samuel Dalembert? Perhaps…alternatively perhaps Petrie became disturbed at the open dialogue concerning these negotiations which was happening on the part of Dalembert and his agent.

What Chuck Hayes signs for and with whom will largely be based on timing factors,
further medical evaluations, and levels of need on the part of the bidders. I suggest we withhold judgement until we see what uniform Chuck Hayes is playing in on opening day.
