Hey, I have been called worse.
I am going to ask you to make yourself Head Coach of an NBA team. Let's call this team the Sacramento Kings
You were hired and
paid a lot of money paid the lowest salary in the League to get this team to win games. You are given bottom of the line payroll, no stars, but a stars starter kit - one piece every year.
What no playoffs? What is taking you so long? Don't worry, we have plenty of ridicule.
Here's the best part. If you don't win with a particular line up of rookies and role players you are expected to leave this group in place and accept the criticism that you are not doing enough. If you try new pieces and try to ignite some wins with any alteration, your critics will light the torches as they yell "Fire!". Your effigy is filled with kindling.
Now that is, of course, part of the job description of being an NBA Head Coach. I have seen Rick Adelman, and you sir, are no Rick Adelman - and he has been fired (or not re-hired) at least 4 times that I can think of.
>It is easier to fire the coach than trade players
>it is cheaper to fire the coach than acquire talent
>If the team doesn't win, you lose (your job)
>You have to make a winning hand with the cards your are dealt - no bluffing!
>Everyone is a critic and no fan has EVER lost a game
Should the Kings Fire Westphal! ? Eventually, all coaches reach their effective expiration date. Who is the longest tenured Coach in the NBA this season? I would guess it is Greg Popovich. After him, I would guess that Westphal, in his third season, is in the top ten for team longevity. They don't hand out gold watches for this career choice. After a 6 game losing streak or 3-12 start or finish dismissing Westie will carry more merit. Replacing him may or may not be the Smart direction.
As a New Year’s Resolution, A Holiday Gift, whatever, can we put a moratorium on the calls out to can the guy for at least the first 20 games? (Then we can move on to the rest of the
H8ers Agenda Sports Fan Manifesto - Fire the GM and trade the players. In fact, the best thing that can happen to the team is to trade the letters (in order) A,F,L,M,O for B,E,K, L,R, U. Until that happens, Coaching changes will be like changing Head Cooks at McDonalds and complaining that your Filet Mignon isn't how you ordered it)
