Kings To Open At Home On December 26 Against Lakers, According To Report

The Sacramento Kings will face the L.A. Lakers at Power Balance Pavilion on December 26, reports Mike Bresnahan of the Los Angeles Times. As the Kings are shockingly not scheduled for the NBA's national TV Christmas pentupleheader, the Lakers' visit will be the first game of the season for the Kings.

The Lakers will be in Game No. 2 of a lovely little back-to-back-to-back, as L.A. hosts the Chicago Bulls on Christmas and hits Salt Lake to play the Utah Jazz on December 27.

The Kings ought to be well-rested, with the second of two preseason games coming on December 20. One would imagine that Paul Westphal will hold a couple of practices after the second preseason game to string out an abbreviated training camp a bit.

You'll remember that the Kings' final game of 2010-11 -- a game most of us felt could be the team's final game in Sacramento -- came against those Lakers. The Kings lost in overtime before an emotional crowd. Kevin Johnson pulled out the Burkle card a day later, and things have been beautiful ever since.

My only negative on a Laker opener

is that Season Openers are usually sell outs and the Lakers are usually sell outs. so I figure there will probably one less sell out from this
However 1-0 start will be a good jump start for ticket sales.

As a result of the NBA going dark and staging a lockout I plan on saying only depressing things until the season starts. If they put out the schedule I plan to also go and sit in the Arco parking lot on nights games would have been played. I will Tivo CSN on games nights. They can't stop me. Its my team and I'll cry if I want to, cry if I want to.

Pre-season and single game tickets should go on sale as soon as the NBA formally announces the schedule (which is suppose to be tomorrow night).

Hope we can keep tickets out of Lakers' fans paws ...

Last year the Kings packaged the first Lakers game with the Raptors’ visit to both boost attendance for the Raps game and (let’s hope) force Lakers fans looking to crash our party to pony up more money. I bet they’ll do the same.

Not to tell anyone how to live, but STHs selling these tickets on Stubhub, etc., are abetting the enemy.

Not to pee all over this, but...

If the Kings are still using the variable pricing (and they should), this promises to be perhaps the most expensive game of the year, or at least as expensive as when Miami comes to town. Just be aware of that when you go searching for tickets, and you should survive the sticker shock.

The price on the ticket said $80 I think. But I wanted a decent seat for the potential last game so I paid a bit more for mid court seats instead of an end.

Kings will win this game.

Kings have a far more talented roster than LA, & our guys are gonna be pumped for this game, the 1st game of the year. I’m hoping to see Jimmer treat LA like San Diego St. The atmosphere in Arco is going to be insane!! I was at the last game in April against the Lakers, and as electric as that night was, I expect this night to be an absolute party. Can’t wait to experience it with all the rest of my fellow Kings family. Hopefully the Maloofs don’t sell their seats to Laker fans this time.

I'd argue that we have more players with talent.

But the Lakers have those couple players with sky-high ability, whereas we’re stuck with a bunch of players ranging from promising to alright.

"Where hope goes to die"

by napg on Dec 5, 2011 2:33 PM PST up reply actions

Kings have more talent

We’re far deeper than LA with guards & bigs, both the 4 & 5. Cousins is better than Bynum, Gasol is good but does nothing when Dalembert is on him. (I mention Dalembert in case he stays) We have Hickson, JT, & Whiteside as well. Who does LA have backing Gasol & Bynum?? Alrighty then. Moving on…. Other than Kobe, the Kings have better guards than the Lakers and it isn’t even debatable. Only area where they might be better is at the 3 with Artest, Odom, & Barnes. But we have Salmons now who is a proven vet and has playoff experience. Kings fans aren’t pleased with having Salmons back on the team, and who knows how long he’ll be a King this time, but as of now we have him, Greene & Honeycutt to play the 3. I like all 3, but I’ll still say the Lakers are better at the 3, for now. I might change that opinion soon, very soon. It’ll just depend on how Westphal uses our guys. Lakers are not as good as people think. They’re good, just not great. Their best days are behind them and they know. Hense why they want Dwight so bad. Even if they add Dwight, we’ll still have a better roster, talent-wise. I don’t see how anyone can compare our roster to the Lakers 1-12 and then tell me theirs is better. But I guess any roster with Kobe Bryant on it is gonna look better to the average fan.

I like...

“In all likelihood”…or “realistically” But, speaking in absolutes, when you have absolutely no idea who will be on this team come DEC 26th, let alone the end of the season, is a bit rash. I get that people want to call their shots and flex their basketball acumen but it’s a bit premature.

I have a feeling he didn't intentionally mean to speak in absolutes

and he meant realistically the best case scenario as of today would be around .500. As in, Kings fans would be very happy if this team, as we know it now, won half their games this year.

by wallywagon11 on Dec 5, 2011 4:44 PM PST up reply actions

I too would be happy with .500

But if this team surprises people and does better than that I won’t be upset. In fact, given the shortened season, the number of back to backs, and the abbreviated “training camp”, I’d say this young roster has very good chance of coming out and shocking people. Especially since we have far fewer people to sign to complete the roster. That being said…I have no idea who will be on this team or what moves we will make.

Fully agree

although we have a pretty good idea of who will be on the team. I think because of talent & youth, we can expect the team to win at least 30 games. I myself expect mroe wins than that. But I could be wrong

Who does LA have backing Gasol & Bynum??

Well considering those two play a combined 65 minutes a game and Gasol shifts to center so Lamar Fing Odom can play at the 4, pretty sure they are doing alright there.

Other than Kobe, the Kings have better guards than the Lakers and it isn’t even debatable.

Yes, if you just delete their best player it’s true the Kings totally have the better guards.

Only area where they might be better is at the 3 with Artest, Odom, & Barnes. But we have Salmons now who is a proven vet and has playoff experience.

You know who also are proven vets? Artest, Odom, & Barnes. You know who has not only playoff experience but won championships along the way? Artest and Odom.

I like all 3, but I’ll still say the Lakers are better at the 3, for now. I might change that opinion soon, very soon. It’ll just depend on how Westphal uses our guys.

I have a feeeling it will depend largely on whether Odom, Barnes, and Artest are still on the Lakers.

Even if they add Dwight, we’ll still have a better roster, talent-wise.

LMAO

I don’t see how anyone can compare our roster to the Lakers 1-12 and then tell me theirs is better.

Pretty sure you don’t compare a roster by the 1-12 but by how the team is going to allocate the 240 minutes of playing time per game.

by wallywagon11 on Dec 5, 2011 3:51 PM PST up reply actions

Really??

I guess you think the Kings roster is weak and our bigs can’t handle Lamar Odom.
Btw, stop twisting my words. I never said anything like, “if you completely delete Kobe Bryant’s contribution.” That’s just stupid. Yet, Kobe Bryant is the only reason the Lakers have a chance at beating the Kings. How about this wallywagon11, take Kobe off the Lakers & Evans off the Kings. Now what group of guards would you take?? And btw, I’m not counting Shannon Brown as a Laker because he’s not gonna play for them anymore. They can’t pay him. So, you have a choice of Fisher, Blake, & rookie Andrew Goudelock, or you can choose Thornton, Jimmer, Garcia, & Thomas. You can even throw Salmons in their since he’s considered a guard.
Point is, Kings are deeper & more talented. Bottom line. Soon, others will agree.

I guess what I would say right now, prior to any free agent signings

is that the Kings roster is more wide than it is deep. A lot of role players and not a lot of studs. Potential is there for guys like Evans and Cousins, but this team still needs an infusion of real, live talent.

Idk man, I think this Kings team is the best we’ve had talent wise since probably 04. And I don’t see how anyone can compare the Kings & Lakers rosters and then tell me they have a better roster. But I consider a few players on LA to be overrated, & a few Kings players to be underrated. So I already expect many to disagree with me.

I wonder if we are really talking about different things

Okay so you cannot see how anyone can compare the Kings and Lakers rosters and then say the Lakers are better.

Doesn’t that then mean you cannot see how anyone can think the Lakers would have a better record than the Kings this year?

by wallywagon11 on Dec 5, 2011 4:28 PM PST up reply actions

No

NBA officiating helps the Lakers get many wins. Not all, but a good amount. Especially against the Kings

Ninja King

by Ninja King on Dec 5, 2011 4:44 PM PST up reply actions

I don't want there to be any misunderstanding here

So you are saying that, if not for officials helping out the Kings, you cannot see how anyone can think the Lakers would have a better record than the Kings this year? As in if the Kings won only 24 games and the Lakers won 40 that means the Lakers won at least 17 games because of the officials?

by wallywagon11 on Dec 5, 2011 4:47 PM PST up reply actions

Kings...

get NO love from the refs. We always get screwed. And yes, I believe what Tim Doneghy had to say in his book about NBA officiating. It’s a biased league, and gambling comes into play. Only reason I follow the NBA anymore is because I love basketball and I love the Kings.

Ninja King

by Ninja King on Dec 5, 2011 4:47 PM PST up reply actions

The Book

talked about the refs having biases for or against certain players, & even teams. It also discussed how refs make calls to others before a game & telling them to bet a certain way.

Ninja King

by Ninja King on Dec 5, 2011 4:56 PM PST up reply actions

I know what the book talked about

and the book made allegations of a biased league and gambling.

The book certaintly did not make the case that teams like the Lakers have better overall season records than teams like the Kings which seems to be your ascertion based on what you read in the book.

I agree with the general premise that gambling and bias are prevelant, but there are a lot of holes one has to ignore in Donaghy’s story to believe everything he said. And even if you did. you’d be less concerned about the Kings getting screwed by the refs every game of the season and more concerned about NBA games where a team like the mid 00s Pistons were coming into town.

by wallywagon11 on Dec 5, 2011 5:05 PM PST up reply actions

Bottom line

Cheating in the NBA obviously happens, and it’s never in Sacramento’s favor. LA has the league’s biggest fanbase, and make more money than any other team in the league. They get the calls because the NBA is a business.

Ninja King

by Ninja King on Dec 5, 2011 5:16 PM PST up reply actions

1. Do you think the Kings last year would have had more wins than the Lakers if not for the officials?

2. If you are taking Donaghy at his word you are getting snookered (again, agree there is gambling and bias but I think gambling is a much much bigger concern when it comes to the regular season then biases). If you think Donaghy made his bet based on his perceived biases and not from fixing the game intentionally based on the lines in Vegas, you are a sucker.

by wallywagon11 on Dec 5, 2011 5:23 PM PST up reply actions

1) I don’t necessarily think the Kings would have had more wins than LA. I just think they would have had a better record than they ended up with and the Lakers would have had less wins than they ended up with.

2) I do think Doneghy made his bets based on Vegas, but also was influenced by the biases of his fellow referee’s that he was working with on gameday. Every game has a different set of circumstances that go into it. Depnds on the teams playing, the players on the floor, who the refs are that are working the game, and the Vegas lines.

Exactly

The Kings have two real potential studs, a ton of obvious NBA talented players just no clue how they will shape up long term with a few low risk potential guys.

by wallywagon11 on Dec 5, 2011 4:26 PM PST up reply actions

Btw, stop twisting my words. I never said anything like, "if you completely delete Kobe Bryant’s contribution." That’s just stupid.

“Other than Kobe, the Kings have better guards than the Lakers and it isn’t even debatable.” Call me crazy but when you are trying to argue the Kings are more talented and in the process make that assumption by casually deleting a player, well ….

take Kobe off the Lakers & Evans off the Kings. Now what group of guards would you take?? And btw, I’m not counting Shannon Brown as a Laker because he’s not gonna play for them anymore.

Okay, I’d take the Kings backcourt in that case. (By the way, little odd that Shannon Brown is off the Lakers in this analysis when up above you were doing your frontcourt analysis assumption Dalembert stays.)

Point is, Kings are deeper & more talented.

That wasn’t your point. You just removed Shannon Brown and Kobe from the Lakers and removed Tyreke from the Kings to make your point (and in your previous comment you removed the fact Odom is a back up PF and Gasol plays C minutes plus you kept Dally even though you were totally fine removing Shannon Brown. I haven’t even got into the fact you talk about Salmons and him being a veteran and completely ignore that factor with Fisher but then again don’t really think it matters a ton for either). You can’t really make the point the Kings are deeper and more talented when you are removing players from the rosters to fit your arguement.

The Lakers are still more talented right now. Clearly, the Kings have a ton of young talent that is going to get better over the years and be in the league longer. There is nothing wrong with this, it just doesn’t mean they are more talented now. As far as depth, personally I think the 9 guys getting minutes in LA are fairly deep (and yes I am assuming Shannon Brown is there at this moment given he is there at the moment). Are those players all going to become better players in the next few years? No. I am saying I think when you look at who plays what minutes (and it will change with a new coach) they have some really talented players some significant minutes and some nice complimentary pieces filling in currently. Not years from now but at the moment.

by wallywagon11 on Dec 5, 2011 4:22 PM PST up reply actions

I hear you

I involved Dalembert & threw out Brown because at this point there is a very high chance that Sammy stays while the chances of Shannon staying are close to nil. I’m going by the reports that I have read. I also realize that Dalembert might not come back. But who will we bring in then?? We’re still gonna be just fine in terms of bigs. As far as Fisher goes, I understand he is a vet who has hit big shots throughout his career, and is a very good player. But at this point in his career, I just think our guards are better. It’s that simple.

I don’t think the Lakers are more talented at all. More experienced?? Yes, without a doubt.

Overall, I just think the Lakers are overrated and get the respect they do because they’re the Lakers. I’m not being a hater and my opinion has nothing to do with the history between the Kings & Lakers. I just think the Kings are stacked with ballers that other teams wish they could have. The only thing lacking is experience, and I am highly skeptical of Westphal being the right coach for the team. But time will tell

As far as Fisher goes, I understand he is a vet who has hit big shots throughout his career, and is a very good player. But at this point in his career, I just think our guards are better. It’s that simple.

That wasn’t really where I was going with that. I was referring to the above comment where you were talking about Salmons at the three being able to stack up to the Lakers because of his veteran experience and I thought it was a little weird to talk about that there. It was like you were saying “Okay the Lakers are better than the Kings at the 3 talent wise but Salmons has veteran experience” yet at the same time saying the Kings are better at guard and not even willing to give Fisher the same benefit you did Salmons. That’s it. It was more a point about bias and being even handed more than anything else.

Ninja King

by Ninja King on Dec 5, 2011 5:25 PM PST up reply actions

okay then

We’re far deeper than LA with guards & bigs, both the 4 & 5 … Other than Kobe, the Kings have better guards than the Lakers and it isn’t even debatable.

So the fact that you talked about Salmons being “a proven vet” and having “playoff experience” as if it is a positive. As in, the Lakers at better at the 3 for now but we should note that it is a positive that Salmons is “a proven vet” and having “playoff experience.”

The fact you didn’t factor in Fisher being “a proven vet” with “playoff experience” (nor Blake as “a proven vet” with “playoff experience”) is what I am talking about. It’s not about whether you meant what you wrote but how you made your arguement. You used something as a postive to bolster one arguement and never used that same analysis for the other side of the coin on the previous arguement.

That’s the bias I am talking about. Not about what you meant or whether you agree.

by wallywagon11 on Dec 5, 2011 5:32 PM PST up reply actions

My reason

for not using that analysis of Fisher being a “proven vet” with “playoff experience” is because he is past his best days, and will get ran by younger guards who are better than him. The same cannot necessarily be said of Salmons. But I see what you’re saying & I understand you. I just don’t think Fishers experience will matter against guys like Evans & Thornton. They’re better than him. My expectations of both are also high, especially if Fisher is guarding them.

Disregarding any and all free agents, let's look at the whole roster and see what there is

Kings Guards: Tyreke Evans, Jimmer Fredette, Isaiah Thomas, Francisco Garcia
Lakers Guards: Kobe Bryant, Derek Fisher, Steve Blake, Andrew Goudelock, Darius Moore

Analysis: Judging by this, Kobe trumps all (in the NBA, one player does have the power to make a huge difference). In terms of overall depth, the Kings have a lot of uncertainty as do the Lakers. Derek Fisher doesn’t have a lot left, but he’s still a solid guard who isn’t asked to do much, same for Steve Blake. The Kings have two still unproven rookies and one decent, if inconsistent, roleplayer. Since the other two Laker guards likely won’t play much barring injury, I’ll ignore them for now.

Verdict: Lakers-The Kings may potentially have the better guards but with two rookies expected to get some kind of extended role, even with Thornton, it comes down to the best players, and in this case Kobe>Tyreke, no if, ands, or buts.

Kings Forwards: John Salmons, Donte Greene, Tyler Honeycutt, JJ Hickson, Jason Thompson
Lakers Forwards: Ron Artest, Devin Ebanks, Derrick Caracter, Pau Gasol, Ater Majok, Lamar Odom, Luke Walton

Analysis: Ron Artest may not have any offense left, but that’s not what the Lakers need out of him; he is still one of the best defenders in the league. They have two great hybrid Forwards in Gasol and Odom. Odom had a career year last year, and Gasol is still enough to give teams fits. Their other forwards play sporadicly(sp?) so they don’t make much of a contribution. John Salmons is a pretty good player, but he’s not as talented as Gasol or Odom, and not anywhere near as good a defender as Artest. He may be a decent scorer and defender but not great by any means. Donte is the king of inconsistency and unlived potential, he hasn’t showed enough to prove he can be a reliable contributor yet. Honeycutt won’t get much burn barring injury, and he is still very raw so I can’t say he will be better than anyone else in the league let alone the Lakers. Hickson is a good rebounder, and a decent inside player, but he doesn’t play much defense and he can’t help spread the floor, while JT is only a decent defender, sporadic post player, and decent jump shooter and rebounder.
Verdict: Lakers-And its not close. The Lakers’ actual rotational players are more talented and play bigger roles than those of the Kings inconsistent bunch.

Kings Centers: Demarcus Cousins, Hassan Whiteside
Lakers Centers: Andrew Bynum

Analysis: Bynum may be a punk, but he is a decent, albeit fragile, player. He is a good shotblocker and knows how to use his length on both sides of the ball. He’s not a star by any means, but he is one of the better centers in the league. Demarcus showed flashes of potential last year, but he also showed his inconsistency and inefficiency as well. Whiteside didn’t do anything last year, and I don’t think he will do much this year as well as he is still too raw to have any consistent impact on this team.

Verdict: Draw-This is a case of solid and unimpressive vs. potential and flash. If Demarcus, and even Whiteside, can make solid leaps this year than I can give it to the Kings, but as of now its a wash.

Final Verdict: Lakers Talent>Kings Talent-Kings are riddled with potential that has yet to be tapped, while the Lakers are a proven commodity. There is a reason they won two straight championships and it wasn’t entirely on the refs. They won because they had superior teams. The Kings have a chance to be great if both cornerstones fulfill their potential, and they get solid to great roleplayers (i.e. Thornton, Dalembert, among others), but as of today, and most likely this season, the Lakers are better.

NOTE: I am, in fact, a huge Kings fan and I despise the Lakers with a great passion, but I also have to recognize when someone is better, and that we still have to improve. I want to be positive and I’d love to have a better team than LA, but we are a ways from there still, let’s just focus on the season, take one team at a time, and judge the team along the way them revisit this argument afterwards. I’m not saying we can’t beat them, but as overall teams go, they are better.

I have to ask

I remember reading a report saying teams would only have 2-3 back-to-back-to-back this seasons. Is the schedule makers giving the Lakers their usual favors by scheduling their one of two back-to-back-to-back beginning the season when their legs are fresh? Not mention a home game, short puddle jump to Sacramento than Utah. In comparison I can the Kings back-to-back-to-back now, a long cross country flight to Boston, next night in NJ than ending in Philly.

Actually LA to SAC to UTAH is quite a lot of miles.

The brutal stretch would be hitting 3 teams closest to eachother, like the Texas Trio, or MIA/ORL/ATL or BOS/NY/NJ. Those will be brutal for teams
